Got a pulled pork sandwich from Bullocks BBQ. Am not impressed with their veggie portion sizes ( they don't have combo plates so each veggie is $1.65- see pics for dinky portions...maybe 3 tablespoons) for the price of the food! Come on I'm an adult not a 5th grader! The mac and cheese is nuclear orange and very powdery as if it is from an institution. The string beans were not de-stringed so they get caught in your throat...and they were severely overcooked...the coleslaw was bland... No sauce for the sandwich, no cutlery... I don't mind spicy BBQ but this is almost too hot. The spice overrides the flavor of the meat. The meat is moist and what isn't burning my tongue is actually nice and flavorful however it needs salt or a rub of some kind.You can see the red pepper flakes and no one should sweat eating a pulled pork sandwich! The service was was great great hostess and server, food was great I had the ceaser salad and fried shrimp on the side they had to 86 the lettuce but they made a swift and delicious substitute. Now onto the critique the building is old and off puting on the outside when I walked in the interior looked like it was stuck in the 90's, the server yes I know I said she was great but she anytime I saw he making drinks the restaurant uses a cooler for their ice no ice maker, and she instead of using the ice spoon dunked the cups into the cooler. It is what it is: A bar-b-que joint with classic Eastern style bar-b-que, fried seafood, hushpuppies, and southern style veggies. Personally, I don't like bar-b-que but my husband does and he said it was good; not as good as Wilbur's in Goldsboro, but good. I'm the southern style veggie lover and Bullock's has plenty to choose from. The mashed pots and gravy were tasty, the turnip greens were typical of greens, and the fried okra was the cream of the crop. I LOVE Mac and cheese, but not their Mac and cheese. The noodles were over-cooked, and it tasted like a powder mixture, additionally, it had that bright orange color to it which isn't real. The very best part of the entire meal was the banana pudding. This is the real deal, y'all. Handmade with real custard, vanilla wafers, and meringue! Other than my MIL's, this is the best I've ever had. I will return just for their okra and banana pudding. They lose stars for the mac and cheese, and the fact that they only take cash. Who carries cash anymore? They do have an ATM machine on site, but it will cost you $3 in fees to use it. Warning, no trees were killed in the preparation of this BBQ plate! Bullock's BBQ is probably a place you should eat at once, but don't expect it to become your regular place--unless it already is. This place has a bigger reputation than deserved, probably because of Duke students who come here and think they've had the real deal when they go back home. Bullock's is a pretty classically southern local eatery. It's billed as a BBQ joint, but really it's a southern diner. The menu is huge - with fish, BBQ, chicken, ribs, wings, salads, etc. Their combo BBQ plates are simple - BBQ and Slaw. Not a lot of country vegetables on the combos. The staff was welcoming and friendly. Place is large and looks like a diner. Clientele was a mix, but mostly older folks. I came to test out the BBQ and got a BBQ and Fried Chicken combo, which came with slaw and hush puppies. I also ordered an unsweetened tea. The BBQ was pretty meh. Whole hog cooked in a stainless. No smoky flavor at all and kind of mushy texture. Very sweet sauce. Sauce on the table was a Western-style sauce. The fried chicken was pretty good and looked like it hadn't sat long out of the fried. The puppies were also good and had a little spice (onion probably) that was nice. The slaw was fine. Great fried chicken, and famous for their barbecue I first went to Bullock's in the 1970s. Not much has changed. They still don't take credit cards. You still get fried chicken, chopped NC barbecue, sweet tea and hush puppies. The fried chicken is the best I've had in a long time. The barbecue was much like I remembered, but I've changed and my standards are higher -- so it was still good, but no longer can I say it's a favorite. The hush-puppies were a bit too sweet. The staff is friendly, and the food much as it has been for the last 40-years - So I go for nostalgia reasons. It's worth a trip for the fried chicken. And it's authentic ... in an age when much food is from a chain, this is the real deal. Finally tried this legendary Durham BBQ institution and it was everything I'd hoped it would be! I tried the bbq pork sandwich with slaw and house hot sauce and OMG I cannot get enough of the hot sauce! I've been going to Bullock's for many years and while it's never been the best, it's a little sad to see this landmark Durham restaurant in decline. It's still fairly popular among retired folks, but the lines aren't as long as they used to be. Our large group opted for a family style meal (pricey at $14.50 per person) with shared big bowls of fried chicken, barbecue, slaw, Brunswick stew, green beans, and fries. - hushpuppies underdone - fried chicken overcooked, with the white meat like cardboard - barbecue pretty good, though lacking any wood smoke flavor (as always here) - cole slaw too sweet, too much mayo, and lacking black pepper - Brunswick stew mediocre, too thick, too sweet, and didn't have enough recognizable veggies - green beans straight out of the can - fries were typical crinkle-cut, so I didn't try them - iced tea was watery, with almost no tea flavor - service was poor - one member of our party ordered off the menu and wasn't served until the rest of us were done - credit/debit cards not accepted, though there is an ATM at the entrance Adding an extra star to the rating because it's still a Durham institution, one that perhaps you should visit once before it closes, if only to see the photos of celebrities on the walls. This place is like a bunch of grandma and grandpas decided to get together and open up a BBQ place. I haven't had North Carolina BBQ before, but for a noob like me, this was great. We did the All-You-Can-Eat for only $12.95, which came with fried chicken, pulled pork, green beans, cole slaw, Brunswick stew, and french fries.The fried chicken was juicy with delicious crispy skin. The pulled pork tasted average to me, but their BBQ sauce really ups the flavor. They have two different BBQ sauces (tomato and vinegar based). Be liberal with the sauces. I thought the Brunswick stew was a little sweet and really reminded me of sloppy joes. They really gave us so much food. With the 5 of us, we couldn't even get through the first round. As good as everything was, my favorite has to be the complimentary hush puppies. I ate way too many of them before the BBQ was brought out. They have bowls of butter to put on your hush puppies so it's really easy to gorge yourselves on these before any BBQ is brought out. For dessert we tried their banana pudding and lemon ice box pie. I've never had banana pudding before, but it was so delicious. I don't normally like creamy things, but it wasn't at all. Plenty of bananas in the pudding. The lemon curd on the lemon ice box pie was a huge punch of lemony tart flavor. It really is just key lime pie except made with lemons. I have been there several times and it bothers me that the wait staff is all White and a few Hispanic workers are bussing tables. Cashiers and hostesses are also White. The final thing that said, go to Bullocks was one of the students in a class I am teaching. So I decided to give it a go. I drive over to Bullocks to have a late meal (7PM). When I get out of the car I am not greeted with that nice smell of hardwood smoke; and when I step inside, instead of smelling like a BBQ restaurant it smelled more like a fish camp. That's OK I thought as I was lead to my booth. The waitress gives me my menu and takes my drink order. I must look the menu over hard to find BBQ. Finally, there it is. Hmm, is this a BBQ joint or what? Ok time to place the order: Spicy Pulled Pork Baked Beans Potato Salad Mac and Cheese I get the sides out of the way. Nothing spectacular about them. The Mac and Cheese was cheesy and it tasted like Kraft Macaroni and Cheese with some extra cheese. The Potato Salad was kind of bland. The baked beans were pretty good. The Spicy Pork What can I say? It was bit dry, and there was no sauce to wet it down with. My waitress didn't come back by very often so I just started eating. The flavor was OK, not horrible but nothing spectacular. Hard to see why this place has any appeal, but I'm a foodie, not a historian, so perhaps I wouldn't understand. The walls abound with pictures of presidents, yet I can only wonder, how the hell did they eat here? I ordered the brisket plate with 3 sides: baked beans, collards, and fried okra. I should've known by my waitress' reaction to the collards "oh I've never tried those" that I was in for a ride. The brisket was so tough I couldn't even cut through it. It had clearly been tossed on the griddle, charred a bit, and thrown on my plate. I could see the char marks. The BBQ sauce can only be described as canned. At least I've got 3 sides, right? I regret to inform you that the baked beans are Bush's (from a can), and that my waitress was right to never try the collards. They tasted old and slimy. They were nice enough to give me another plate with pulled pork, which was fine, but definitely not worth the hype. I've had better pulled pork in NJ. If you're cool paying $12-$15 a plate for reheated canned food, by all means! You'll enjoy the ambience/history, the service is decent, and I'm sure there's a good thing or 2 on the menu. This review is for the food only as we got it as takeout. Our hosts picked up some BBQ from Bullock's for dinner while we were visiting, and this was our only experience with authentic Eastern NC style barbecue - vinegar based sauce. The pulled pork was great and i made myself a sandwich with it and the cole slaw. Their hushpuppies are more fry or wedge shaped rather than ball shaped and went quickly. And their fried chicken was good stuff. Their bread was just plain old white bread slices. it may be authentic but i'd like a nicer roll or bun to hold onto for my sandwich. My family and I went here recently as part of a gargantuan celebratory party (when I say 'gargantuan', I really mean approximately 17-18 people) for my friend, Drew, graduating in all of his snazziness as a Master of Divinity from Duke. Why, yes, he does have a Facebook profile picture of himself in Jedi garb with the title, "Master of Divinity", written beneath - why do you ask? I quickly discerned this Bullocks is likely a favorite place for Durham locals, as well as a place where locals bring their friends. If it was open on Sunday, which it isn't, it would probably be packed to the gills with the after-church crowd, and by all reports remained packed Tuesday through Saturday when it is open. Any place where David Letterman has eaten and posted his signed "this place is awesome" photo on the wall wins points in my book. It even had a "People love us on Yelp" sticker in its window - high-five! It really reminded me of a place back in Ohio called Lynn-way, which my wife instantly echoed - think 'friendly, local, tasty, fried chicken that punches you in the face with greasy goodness'. Only Bullock's doesn't slay in the pie department, from what I could gather, while Lynn-way does. Pardon the pointless side-story... I digress. Very friendly, funny, and professionally knowledgable service. A sizeable menu with many options for non-BBQ-ers, but really, why would you come here if you weren't seeking smokey, tasty Carolina-style BBQ-ed meat? For real? Vegetarians, be gone. The rest of the world is inclusive - Bullocks does meat, and does meat well. Our whole crew went with the "family-style" meal approach (much easier on the kitchen than individually-different orders) for $10.95 or $11.95 a person - this included all-you-can-gorge-yourself-on BBQ pork, fried chicken, coleslaw, beans, fries, and some concoction called Brunswick stew (which, judging by reviews here appears to be a love-it-or-hate-it thing). Our server was freaking on the ball, and we never suffered for subtly-filled drinks, new bowls of food, and friendly conversation. This is definitely not a barbecue joint - it is a popular meat & 3, Southern cooking restaurant, that offers some pretty good, not great, Eastern NC barbecue on its extensive menu. Among NC barbecue lovers, opinions vary as to just how good this barbecue - and I have always felt the version here was good, just not great, and not even the star of the show at this place. The barbecue is typical Eastern style, pretty finely chopped, and what comes out of the kitchen is pretty mild, and needs some additional spicing up. You can get it chopped, sliced, or pulled in a "spicy BBQ sauce" (have not tried that one). They also offer BBQ Chickens, and Ribs, and all the BBQ items are good, yet, to my taste, none are great. The slaw is a mild, white slaw, a little sweet, as are the hush puppies. When I was there last week, Brunswick Stew was not on the menu, and I would have sworn that I'd had it here before. The Fried Chicken is pretty good, although they offer only breasts, wings, or tenders, no dark meat. They have CS Steak, which I really like, Hambuger Steak, several Grilled Chicken entrees, including Grilled Teriyaki -a little off the reservation for country cooking places. There are probably 10 or 12 seafood dishes, mostly of the standard fried variety. The sides are the usual suspects, and it is here that this place runs into inconsistency - sometimes the veggies and sides are very good, some times they are bland, underseasoned, and/or overcooked. The pintos and fried okra were very good, the greens and mac & cheese were not good at all. I have found this to be true before. I sometimes feel they try to do too many things here, and it takes a well-trained, completely organized kitchen to pull off this menu - sometimes they do, sometimes they don't. I have never had a bad meal here, but neither have I had what I thought was great, with either the barbecue, or the country cooking items. Prices are reasonable, portions generally ample. This includes and rates as follows: - Basket of hush puppies: fried perfect, great corn meal taste, not greasy. The food isn't going to win a James Beard award (though I know of one James Beard award winning restaurant that resells their bbq) and the decor sure isn't fancy. But you get a healthy portion of hot and tasty food for not a whole lot of money. This is a full service restaurant. Our server came over pretty soon after my wife and I sat down. Our waitress was friendly and quick. She took our order and returned pretty immediately with hot and fresh hush puppies. Our food order took less than 10 minutes to make it to the table. My wife ordered a small bbq sandwich and I ordered the bbq plate with okra and baked beans. The bbq had a nice flavor and didn't require sauce. The okra was crispy. It was actually over cooked though I prefer my okra more done than less done. The bbq beans were just ok. The portions were generous. Over all the food got a 3 out of 5. It was the service, cleanliness of the restaurant and service that bumped it a star. All of that and the bill was 12.85. You read that correctly.12.85. It was reasonably priced and the service was friendly and fast. -Overall the food was not bad, but also not really that impressive. Southern hospitality from the staff, and an awesome cross-section of Durham old and new where University employees and students meet blue-collar and retired Durham in a diverse and welcoming atmosphere. Cash only (maybe checks, not sure), so be sure to hit the ATM first or suffer with the fee the one they have in the lobby will lay on you. Also, this is one of a few places that can seat 20 without blinking, but call ahead to make sure there's not already someone doing the same. Expect a fast-moving line at dinner and realize the crowd at the door is often just people waiting for take-out - be sure you get in the right line. While in line, you can explore the wall of autographed publicity shots from "famous" visitors over the years. It's a childhood throwback for me as a lot of the photos have been up since the 70's, and the people in the photos haven't been seen since. I'm tempted to make a press photo of myself, sign in, slap it up and see if anyone notices. Bullocks has lots to chose from, but I've always stuck with the BBQ and fried chicken. I do see older couples exploring the menu further, but the selection doesn't interest me. It's either food whose popularity is waning (meaning, not my generation) or that I can easily whip up at home with a few cans and a microwave. I recommend you simply order family style to get a feel of Bullocks. It's all you can eat and brought to you in serving bowls for the whole table. If you run out of something, they'll bring more. Comes with the great: BBQ, Slaw; the good: Fried Chicken, Bruswick Stew, Green Beans cooked to death; and the mediocre: Fries. Runs about $11 and the whole party must order it. I don't know if they'll serve family style for one, but they'll definitely do it for two or more. You'll get hush puppies just for sitting down, and if you can handle the caffeine, get the tea, which of course comes sweet unless you ask for unsweetened. I keep coming back because the bbq is GREAT! However, if I walk in for takeout, I know I will be standing in line for 30 minutes or more. It doesn't matter what time I go, I will be standing for at least 30 minutes. I expect to wait during lunch and dinner hours. But during off-hours, they still keep me standing for 30 minutes. Bullocks has a unique system of filling orders. The person who takes your order cooks the food, packages it, and hands it back to you. That person is completely tied up until the order is complete. That means the number of orders they can handle is entirely dependent on the number of servers they have in the kitchen. During the off-hours, Bullocks reduces the number of servers in the kitchen, effectively reducing the number of orders they can handle. That seems to make sense, as there should be fewer orders during off-hours. But it means I still stand in line for 30 minutes. Bullocks just doesn't seem to have any desire to make their customers wait any shorter. So despite the quality of food, I subtracted a star because the restaurant makes me wait every time I step inside. I would go more frequently, but I don't have the time or stamina to stand for 30 minutes. read more

OK, if you aren't local, then this is the place to immerse yourself in local cuisine. There is nothing like all you can eat Carolina Barbecue, and if you haven't had it, then it's something you ought to try. When I first moved here, people would ask "do you want some barbecue", and I would say "Barbecued what?", and they would shake their heads. In this neck-o-woods, it only means one thing: Carolina BBQ is pulled pork in a very vinegary sauce. Thinking about it makes my mouth water. Bullock's will win no awards for fancy dining, but that's its charm. You'll get great quantities of authentic Carolina fare, for a good price. And you'll get a lot more than just that to try. Oh, how I wish we had a place like this up north. Terrific Carolina BBQ at very reasonable prices. We got the family style for 10.95 which is a steal of all-you-can eat, pork, fried chicken, fries, beans, slaw and not-to-be-missed brunswick stew. The pork and stew were standouts though fried chicken was probably some of the best I've gotten in years. Service was friendly and everything went down for our group of 10 with a nice sweet tea. i walked in with Marquise E. and we were both amused that we were the only ethnic people at Bullock's - everyone else seemed to be universally old (think seniors), white and Southern. I guess we'd come to the right place for authentic Southern food. I've heard amazing things about Bullock's, but I didn't really know what I was supposed to get - until I asked the waitress what Family Style meant. After all, I generally think of family style as set portions to share, kind of like a tasting menu. It turns out that it's all-you-can-eat. WHAT? For $13.95? Outrageous. But there it was - AYCE pork BBQ, fried chicken, Brunswick stew, hush puppies and coleslaw. Absolutely unbelievable. Marquise and I both balked at the thought of AYCE, and we quickly decided to not spring for that. The waitress was the quintessential Southern woman; she called us honey and was just incredibly sweet and helpful. When we asked what Brunswick stew was, she tried to explain and ended up getting us small samples. (Absolutely delicious, by the way - it's a tomato-based stew with vegetables, potato and what seems to be pulled pork ... or was it beef? either way, it was deliciously tender and the whole stew just blended together perfectly). She recommended that we get one of the combo platters that would be more shareable but included the same things, and we substituted collard greens for coleslaw. We also got a 2-vegetable combo (fried okra and mac n cheese - don't laugh! They do have vegetables ... but they also had things like candied yams and applesauce on their "vegetable sides). I was initially dismayed when I saw the portions and I asked for another menu, but we were most definitely stuffed by the time we got halfway through the food. I'm not sure whether the looks were deceiving or I just didn't conceptualize how heavy all the food was, but there was definitely more than enough food for the two of us. I felt that the pulled pork and fried chicken were good but unremarkable, as were the vegetable sides. The hush puppies were among the most impressive that I've ever had, but I'm generally not a huge fan of hush puppies and so I wasn't in love with them, either. I mainly just fell for the Brunswick stew. Next time, I'll have to see if I can just get a large bowl of Brunswick stew - it's definitely a meal in itself. read more

Horrible food pretty sure it's old then they microwave it, the flounder and shrimp tasted like fish sticks and crap, and the clam chowder tasted like clam water, and there was a piece of plastic in my brisket sandwich they said it was microwaved, don't listen to the good reviews they must be fake, this place was horrible everything looked/tasted gross. read more

I went to Bullock's often as an undergrad, and when I wasn't actually here, I was eating their food at catered meetings/events on campus, so this place is dear to my heart. Whenever we've been, we've never even looked at the menu - we just get the family-style meal: unlimited vinegar-y barbecue, fried chicken, brunswick stew, hushpuppies...you get the picture. It's best to go with at least 4 people, to really get the full effect. This is a real authentic barbecue joint. Nothing fancy, no nouveau-BBQ-cuisine, just delicious, fattening, traditional Southern goodness. On the walls are signed pictures of celebrities - they've all stuffed themselves here, and so should you. Get there early, though - they close at 7. read more

So incredibly disappointed today with my experience today for take out. Stood in line for an hour to get waited on. NO social distancing and majority of staff not wearing masks. There was no attempt to allow for social distancing while in line. I will not return there after 30+ years of their great food. read more
