Yummy Pho and Spring Rolls. Everything on the menu looked good. Clean place with friendly staff. Very casual.

I drank too much and stayed up past my bedtime so I needed a big bowl of pho to make things right with the world. Normally, I head downtown to get my fix, but decided to check out Bun Mee Phan, today even though they're more of a Vietnamese sandwich shop that happens to have some noodle soups than a full restaurant. The place is easy to find in a strip mall and shares a parking lot with 3-4 other business so it could be a problem if they're busy but it wasn't today. I ordered off the menu pho for about $8. Other off the menu options included a chicken curry soup and a Bun Bo Hue (spicy beef noodle soup). I also ordered the special banh mi with with cold cuts and steamed pork for $5. Can't go to a sandwich shop and not get a sandwich. The restaurant is small. There are only 2 four tops and some two tops along a wall. The main cooking area is in the same space so you can see your sandwiches being made. It's a very casual environment for a quick bite with one or two friends, but you don't feel rushed. In fact, you'll probably chat with the owners and be offered a sample of their slightly sweet donuts. There were about 10 other sandwich orders ahead of me so it took about 15 minutes to get my sandwich and 20 total for my pho. Not unbearable at all but you might want to call ahead if you're short on time. My phone also connected to the Time Warner hotspot there for free Wifi. My to-go pho was packaged excellently with the noodles, herbs and meat in a box and the boiling hot broth and meat balls in a plastic tub full to the top. I had a small issue finding a bowl big enough to fit it all at home. It came with 1 slice of jalapeno, a lime wedge, a bunch of Thai basil, bean sprouts and chili oil. If you want more jalapenos or some cilanto I'm sure they will accommodate you. The sandwich was stuffed with fatty cold cuts and lean pork and topped with pickled carrots and daikon with a mild jalapeno inside. There was a little more mayo then I would've liked but I'll know to ask for less next time. Great new place in the north with friendly owners. Give it a try! They also sell youtiao (3 for $2) - a savory fried crueller/bread stick - I might pick some up next time and have a bootleg Taiwanese breakfast with warm soy milk. read more

"bánh mì"- pronounced bun mee, literally translation "bread wheat" ... okay lesson over! Bun Mee Phan is the new addiction to the Vietnamese food craze that's booming in Kansas City. Honesty I am happy that there's another Vietnamese restaurant that isn't a pho place! Bun Mee is how anglophone speakers would pronounce banh mi. Think subway, jimmy john's, jason deli and so on.... but with a Vietnamese and French style sub sandwiches. Filled with different style of pork and beef. Pate( liver paste), Vietnamese ham, BBQ pork, grilled beef, head cheese loaded with pickled carrots/dikon, cucumbers, parsley and jalapeños. On a French baguette. Now my opinions on this place. Kinda messy, could use come organization and placement to the area. Then again its very small so I would suggest togo. Food- I would say it's okay. It didn't really stand out or impressed me. There's not many different banh mi options, just youre everyday meats. If you were expecting a banh mi store similar to Lee's sandwishes .... don't. This place gives you simple traditional banh mi. The sweet pickled carrot/dikons could be pickled a bit longer to get the full flavor. Vietnamese food is known to have different flavors exploding in your mouth yet not being too overwhelming. Tacos- they were eh, its the meat from the banh mi but in a corn tortilla. I wouls suggest using flour tortilla. Or use fresh made corn tortilla. Because store bought corn gave my jaw a work out when it cooled. Not fun to eat! If you guys want true traditional Vietnamese banh mi, this is the place to go! Don't go to Pigwich or Voltaire that Americanize a traditional Vietnamese hand handle food. read more

I am not Viet. My self but my boyfriend is and having been able to try home made Viet. Food, Bun Me Phan definitely does not lack authenticity! I tried 3 of the banh mi's and their beef pho along with their pork rice roll and everything was super tasty! I always love how the fresh vegetables compliment the steamy hot food the inside is pretty spacious and although there was only two people on staff duty they were pretty attentive to the register and the people coming in ! Well apparently size does matter, and unfortunately bigger isn't always better. Tonight was my first time at the new location and it was so disappointing. Here's why: 1) EVERY table was dirty. 2) Only two tables even had napkin holders. 3) No towels in the men's room. 4) Just as slow to get orders out as the smaller location. 5) Order came out incomplete. 6) Portion size for my noodle bowl was small, not to mention, the pork belly was not caramelized (as stated on menu) and rather flavorless. On the good side, Pho was flavorful and good size as were the spring rolls. While people kept coming in to pick up to-go orders, tables were never cleared or wiped down. Like I said, so disappointing. And finally, greet customers when the come in and thank them when they leave. This lack of front of the house attention will surely be their downfall, which is unfortunate for a small and local business. read more

I have been craving a GOOD ban mi sandwich and haven't had one that hit the spot lately. But GUYS this place is good! I loved the Special Ban Mi! I ate here for the 4th time two days ago, and yet again, I was impressed. Seriously, if you like Vietnamese food, give this place a try. I gladly drive 20 minutes each way to just have lunch here. It's a small yet seemingly popular place. The staff is very friendly and courteous. I also Changed my rating up to 4 stars because I am never let down by the food or friendly faces. Their Sandwiches are like 6 bucks and are well worth it. They let you pick one of several meats to chose from. This time, I had the Spicy beef noodle soup, which is a lot like pho, but different. This place is awesome! I had the shrimp spring rolls and pork belly banh mi. The pork belly melted in my mouth and the baguette was perfectly crunchy on the outside and soft on the inside. This is easily a 30 minute drive out of my way, but I will definitely make that drive again, no question. Not only was the food great, but the service made this an even better experience. The owner was very helpful to a customer in front of me, and patiently explained all the menu items to the gentleman. Another patron had tried this restaurant for the first time for lunch, and came back again the same day for dinner, just to try an assortment of menu items to share with his wife because of how awesome his sandwich was. read more

In Houston, there are banh mi stores everywhere, so it's always easy to satisfy a banh mi craving quickly and cheaply. That is definitely not the case in Kansas City though, so I'm always excited to try banh mi places that I find. Bun Mee Phan is close to where I live, so my boyfriend and I decided to stop by to grab some banh mis for lunch. The store was located in small shopping center, and had very limited seating indoors. However, there were some wooden picnic tables outside, which we would probably enjoy sitting on once the weather gets warmer. After looking at the menu, we ordered at the counter and got the caramelized pork belly and special sandwiches. The owner recommended getting the sandwiches on a BT, so we decided to give it a try. Our food came out shortly afterwards, and it was delicious. The pork belly was nice, tender, and packed full of flavor, reminding me of a childhood dish my mom used to make with caramelized pork belly and eggs. The special sandwich on the other hand had a nice combination of items, making it anything but boring. We really enjoyed our sandwiches, but found it difficult to finish. The BT was a sweeter and denser bread than the regular french baguette that a banh mi is usually served on, so it filled us up pretty quickly. Before we we're done, we were stuffed, so we'll definitely be getting the regular bread next time. The health inspector was outside trying to get in and the place locked the doors on him and they were all hiding behind the counter!!! This place is real authentic and real good. You pick the meat (Chinese bbq, pork, chicken, etc) and then how it is served (bread, donut, rice, noodle, spring roll, taco). And they come served with fresh cilantro, jalapeño, cucumber, pickled carrot daikon, lettuce, onion. The banh mi is excellent. The French bread is crunchy and flaky on the outside while doughy soft and chewy on the inside. This place is small and the owner/ server is super friendly to explain the menu. Worth driving to this place. I tried the caramelized pork belly which was good but a bit fatty for my taste. But I'm looking forward to trying more items, since the bread and vegetables were spot on for that perfect banh mi taste. read more

Ugh YAS. This is what I'm talking about. I've had the lemongrass tofu bahn mi and the pork belly spring rolls. I enjoyed both immensely. Standouts in my memory were the encasements--the spring roll wrappings and the bahn mi bread. You know when sometimes you eat a spring roll and it is rubbery as? Not the case here. It tasted fresh, chewy, and delightful. Similarly, the bahn mi bread was deliciously fresh. Good textures all around, lemongrass tofu included. Speaking of textures, the taro bubble tea was on point. If you've never had taro, it tastes like a slightly caramelized sugar cookie. The boba in the bubble tea tasted fresh and were a good texture...not soggy like I've had elsewhere. The peanut sauce that came with the spring rolls was top notch, and the spring rolls were huge! Don't worry about ordering these babies. You'll be full. Everything was so fresh and delicious. The flavors of the bahn mi were like a spicy crunchy dance in my mouth. Yes. I'll be back. We got takeout and it was really quick, probably about 7 minutes. The atmosphere inside is nothing exceptional--it's just a small eatery--but it's got nice windows and adequate seating for a few people. Once you get your delicious food you won't care. I've traveled extensively around this world, and I have learned many things. 1: pomp and circumstance, 2: fluff, 3: inundation of advertising (clever as it may be), doesn't mean a thing, nor do photoshopped or manipulated photography created to make you salivate. This place - One word? Amazing. The perfect nondescript forefront that looked exactly like a million others. The exact thing that I needed to entice me to continue in my search for the best banh-mi near me. I ordered the crispy pork belly banh-mi, with an (overeasy) egg to top it off, along with an avocado bubble tea. The baguette was perfectly crusty on the outside, and soft but not chewy on the inside. The pork belly was perfectly prepared and cut into bite sized pieces with a perfect sweet/savory flavor. The pickled veggies were such a perfect blend of sweet and tangy; that's could have eaten a plate of just those! The fresh julienned jalapeños had just the right amount of bite, and when the egg yolk melted down into all of the components of the sandwich, a mouth-watering miracle was born. I have been craving a Bahn mi for months now but haven't found the wherewithal to drag myself out to find one. Today was the day. I found Bun Mee Phan from a search on the internet and made the 35 minute trek this afternoon. My idea of a gem in the rough. Very unassuming store front and an empty parking lot (it was 2:30). Along with the requisite Bahn mi on the menu they had soups, spring rolls and such. And I bought a bunch. But what intrigued me was the soft taco "Bahn mi". So I got a grilled pork taco. Wow. Crisp and refreshing with slabs of cucumber and jalapeño. The sriracha mayo was good, but I slathered on some of the spring roll peanut sauce for good measure. That really made it pop. I'm a big fan of this divey little spot. The inside is spare and not well temperature controlled, so we like to take food to go or eat at the picnic tables outside if it's nice. Or, take your food down to cinderblock brewery and have some beers and spring rolls on their patio! We generally order 2 or 3 types of spring rolls or tacos which is plenty of food for 2. The tilapia tacos are excellent and my favorite spring roll is the meatball. I generally can't resist an order of the taro waffles either. I recommended this tiny gem on the "Hole-In-The-Wall Restaurants" talk thread the other day, and then found myself out running errands on a chilly day around lunchtime. And there was Bun Mee Phan, right on my way home! Nothing better than some pho on a day like this. The first time I went, I ordered a lemongrass chicken sandwich and beef pho because I thought just soup might not be enough, and I wanted to try more than one thing. Well, I had two lunches! The flavor of the lemongrass chicken is just out of this world, kicked up by a few sliced jalapeños, on crispy bread. I loved it, but, reading other reviews, I really want to try the sweet bread, because I love spicy and sweet together. The pho broth is rich and delicious, and they give you a full-size to-go carton full of beef and vegetables to put in it. My second time, that nasty cold day, I ordered the spicy beef noodle soup, which is served the same way, but the beef is cooked and accompanied by what looked to me like sausage and maybe tofu. It was just spicy enough for me without the red pepper oil that comes on the side. The staff are incredibly sweet and helpful for those not entirely familiar with Vietnamese food. Three words...BOMB ASF. I've been here two times and I can say, they are some of the best if not THE BEST Viet sandwiches I've ever had. Being from California, I've been looking for a great Banh Mi shop and my God, I think I have. It's a great little hole in the wall with amazing food. I came in here with Adam for the second time two days ago because we both were quite impressed with the food. This time I elected to order the chicken curry soup since I remember it being very good, but this time, it could have been better. It came out room temperature at best. The flavor is delicious, however. The first thing I noticed that was also different from last time was that this place was completely packed. I'm talking not one single seat available and it was not even noon yet. Second, the smell is pretty strong inside of burnt oil or bread.
