Buona beef sandwiches are my go to with their tasty beef, perfect bun, and giardiniera that's not vinegar tasting like some can be. We normally get the beef sandwich and split a salad which rounds out a nice lunch. The salads are fresh and a generous portion. Recently though, out of the blue I had a strong urge for a hotdog. So along with my usual beef order I got a hotdog with everything, and it did not disappoint. The hotdog was juicy, the bun was fresh as was all of the garnish. I had a poor experience with this Buona a while back but I decided to give it another chance. I ordered off the DoorDash app (which could partially explain the poor experience) and ordered the AntiPasto side salad and Beef Bowl. To start, the beef bowl consisted of maybe four thin slices of beef, two slices of green peppers, and cheese all the way at the bottom of the bowl. It was almost $8 and felt like it had less meat than the sandwich. Secondly, the antipasto salad (which is typically salad with an assortment of meats) was actually a penne pasta salad with a few pieces of salami mixed in. There is no description of this salad in the door dash app so you may want to look into this as it's somewhat misleading. We like Buona better than Portillos, outside the city of Chicago. However, we now have to question the service... A week ago Friday, my wife and I ate at the location at Cass and 75th. My wife ordered the chopped salad and I had a beef combo with fries. I also took advantage of the 1/2 price wine. It took more than 20 minutes to get our food..... When the food arrived my wife's soup was on my beef platter and half of it spilled into my sandwich and fries. I told the waitress that I still had wine coming. The wine never came. As the waitress came back to deliver to another table, we caught her again, and reminded her again. We watched her go back behind the counter and get distracted, and again forgot the wine. We caught the manager and told him about the wine and refunded our money. We left chalking it up as a bad day at a good restaurant. Today, we ordered 3 beef sandwiches...DRY...and fries, through the drive thru. We were ushered to the waiting corral, where we waited 12 mins for our food. We got home and each sandwich was baptized in gravy and the fries were ice cold. We may be rethinking our beef place. There's only so many chances you give a place until you are the issue. read more

I almost always get the combo (Italian beef and sausage) here. This location is tough because you also have Portillo's in the area, so it's worth comparing the two. Portillo's has faster service and is all around better. As far as the combo sandwich, Portillo's is always good, but I have had better combos at Buona Beef than at Portillo's more than once. I usually get cheese on my combo here, but not at Portillo's. I don't know what it is, but it is hit or miss here. Portillo's is always consistently great. But, there are times when the bread is dry at Buona's and the sandwich isn't all that. Other times, it is better than Portillo's. It's just whether or not I want to take the chance with Buona's. I wish they were more consistent. The cheese fries are very good here. The paninis are noteworthy. The pizza is better than I expected, but I'd still go to a good pizza place first. The pizza is better than Domino's or Pizza Hut though. The Darien location provided high quality service and food for our large group of people on both occasions with short notice. I spoke to Rudy today, he was kind and helpful during our time of need. This place makes great Chicago style Italian beef. Even as this chain has expanded, they run a great quality control ship. The food is always consistently excellent. I have had the catering many times as well and it always is impeccable. The sausages, grilled chicken, and lemon chicken are never overcooked in my experience. This is a Chicagoland area gem. Good place for an italian beef and it's super close to the 'rents house. They also sell italian beef in bulk size so I am able to take a lb of it and some rolls back to Denver. I like this aspect over Portillos' (not sure if they do this too). For under $15, I am able to buy enough meat for 5 sandwiches! However, I still think the Portillo's beef is better but that's not to say Buona's isn't good too. It's a local chain that seems to have garnered some popularity over the last few years. But even then, when that happens I automatically contact the respective restaurant's customer service to rectify the situation. Second time I've been here in 2 days. Of course your food is great, but the service seems to pleasantly above par. I came here yesterday and the cashier who rung me up was "Nazal M." He has exceptional customer relation skills. I came in very close to closing time yesterday, and whenever I do this at any restaurant (Buona or not) it is not unusual to get death stares from employees. It's understandable. It's late, its a Friday night and everyone just wants to go home. Nazal however was very pleasant, light hearted, and did not make myself, or any of the other customers feel rushed. Based off his mannerisms and his customer service etiquette I actually thought I was dealing with a manager, but that appears to not be the case! Because I had such a good experience last night, I came back again to pick up an order for myself and my husband. I used the app to place the order online (a naked beef bowl and a kids meal). Nazal happened to be there again today, and when he saw me he greeted me by my first name, and asked me how my Quatro Formaggi pizza that I ordered the night before was. Very impressive! He remembered both my name and order! Today upon ringing me up for my order he took the time to attempt to optimize my order. He saw that I ordered the naked beef bowl for my husband to which he said "since it comes without bread, do you think he would like it with extra au jus? We can add it if you wish, it will make it much tastier!" To which I said sure why not (excellent choice btw). After offering a couple other suggestions in a professional, NOT AT ALL PUSHY manner he rang me up. Upon giving me my receipt he mentioned that if I enjoyed my "Quatro Formaggi pizza" from the night before (which I did) he mentioned that Buona has a $6 special on all pizzas on Thursdays, and double points on Tuesdays. I was not aware of any of these promos. I'm very glad he told me! In short, I just wanted to share this positive experience I had at once of your stores two days in a row. The timing of both of my transactions were at a times that most other employees would be groaning and want to be in a rush to clock out of work. Not with Mazal. He truly seemed happy to be at work. If there was anything at all negative about my experience today it was that I had ordered the italian beef kids meal, and I wanted the sandwich with sweet peppers, mozzarella and hot peppers. I opened my order when I got home and saw none of those additions. A little put off by that since I paid an extra 1.50 for all of those things, and didn't get any of it. Not sure what was happening in the kitchen, because it did say on my recipet that those all needed to be added. That being said, because the rest of my customer service experience was BEYOND excellent I still give this a 5/5 and not a 4/5; thats how good the service was. TL;DR: Italian beef is italian beef, but excellent customer service 5 minutes before closing time, and the very next day when it first opens is RARE. Download the app you get $5 off. I've been here several times and even had the Buona in Naperville cater one of my graduation parties. Always good food. There's one close to work and the menu is plentiful so sometimes we end up ordering lunch from here. The beef is pretty good - I actually prefer Portillo's beef to theirs, but it's still tasty. I've also had the chicken artichoke panini - roasted chicken breast, artichoke hearts, provolone, roasted red peppers & pesto sauce - Yum! Also a huge fan of their Tuscan Harvest salad, too...mixed greens, apple slices, dried cranberries, candied walnuts & gorgonzola with fat-free raspberry dressing. In addition, their personal pizzas are a hit with some of my co-workers. All in all there's something for everyone. Not a fan of the fries - what a waste. When I am here in Chicago area it is something I always get in a few times. It is a great restaurant with a drive-thru that makes it convenient and fast for good quality food. I think the quality always is the same and I always love a good beef and hotdog. For the most part the service is great, fast, and friendly. The reason for 4 stars is sometimes I have had to wait extremely long for the food or have not had great service. The service a few times was someone who was very rude but other then that the majority of time it was great. So I it harvest apple salad- it was good but almost 500 calories when I looked it up in fitness pal, couldn't believe it- hope that's wrong. It is large salad though with candied walnuts and cheese. We also ordered buona beef- good but I think chicago Italian beef is wrong cut, it should be a pulled cut like London broil. Very disappointed that we chose this location to pick up food for Mother's Day dinner. We had a fairly large order. The order taker outside(girl) was rude, not friendly. Then we asked for receipt@ window & they were reluctant to give it saying they were having problems printing. I'm glad we did get receipt as they are known for mistakes. They brought our order to car, we purposely asked if everything was there. Yes Luis assured us. We drove a distance only to find Mom didn't get her hot dog. I called manager. He seemed like I was bothering him. I reminded him it was Mother's Day & they're negligence ruined our dinner. He asked if I wanted to pick up the hot dog after I told him we were half hour away!!
