I brought in **36.8 grams of 14K gold scrap** and was paid **$2,070** total. After getting home and recalculating everything, I realized the payout was extremely low compared to the estimated melt value at the time, which was around **$3,264**. That means approximately **36.6%** of the value was kept. For people who may not know: * A very fair/refiner-level buyer often keeps around **10% or less** * A decent local gold buyer usually keeps around **10-20%** * Keeping over **35%** is extremely high I do want to be fair and say this was partly my mistake because I should have slowed down and double-checked everything before agreeing. I had calculated my gold beforehand, but once the pieces started getting separated, weighed individually, and moved around during testing, I got confused and didn't stop to fully redo the math in the moment. It wasn't until I got home and sat down with the numbers that I realized how far off the payout actually was. At the same time, this is also why I personally would not return. An honest buyer who is trying to build trust and long-term customers usually does not let someone walk out with this large of a gap without at least explaining the percentages more clearly or offering something closer to a fair market payout. I'm posting this mainly as a warning for others: if you're selling gold, especially larger amounts of scrap gold, know the approximate melt value beforehand, take your time, and get multiple quotes before agreeing to anything. read more

Needed a new battery for my fossil watch. I didn't want to go to fossil; last time i went to fossil to get the battery replaced, the worker squished the gasket and i didn't notice until a day or two later that the gasket was sticking out. I ended up having to go back to the store to get it fixed (remember this). I've seen this store in the plaza while getting subway and decided to check it out. I came in on a sat afternoon and Jack was there to help me. He literally changed the battery in a minute. He showed me that there was some sort of grease on the watch back and wasn't sure why it was in there and told me that he'd clean it out (it was nice of him to be up front with me). He replaced the battery and handed me the watch. At that point i remembered the gasket experience from the fossil store and asked if the gasket was ok. He told me he didn't see one when he had the watch open. I said..."oh... really?" He said he was pretty sure. Then he brought his tools from the back of the store to the front so that he could open it and show me. We took a second look and low and behold there wasn't one. Im assuming the worker at the fossil store messed the gasket up last time and decided to just take it out and tell me it was fixed (they worked on the watch in the back). I had a few rings that I recently inherited that I needed enlarged. These rings were all really different aesthetically and are vintage and valuable - both financially and sentimentally. I brought 4 rings to him and he immediately told me that he couldn't do two of them (one was a harem ring that was super complex and the other was a rounded stone). The two he enlarged for me turned out AMAZING. It's a super thick 1" gold band with diamonds all around it and it was my mom's from the 50s. I love this ring. He was able to cut it, fill it in with 14kt gold and make it look seamless. I was amazed and impressed with the quality of the work. The other was my engagement ring which he enlarged using white gold and made the prongs around the diamond stronger and more secure. Again, very impressed. I had them replace my Omega watch battery. Three days later, my watch stopped working again. I just took it to another place to have the battery replaced, thinking that they just put a defective battery in there and I didn't want to go back to the same place. Come to find out, apparently when these folks were replacing the battery, they broke the arm that holds the battery in place. Who knows how much it will cost to be repaired.
