Burger Deck is an expansion of Rubicon Deli, only focusing on burgers. They've done an excellent job making a name for themselves with sandwiches so I think we can expect good things with their burgers. Unfortunately, it's not really in a great location and we had to circle around for parking. Rubicon Deli is located downstairs and Burger Deck is upstairs. I didn't see any elevators or ramps so I hope they have some kind of handicap accessibility. It's completely outdoors with only some patio tables with umbrellas. But I bet on summer nights, the outdoor vibe is really nice. It's open seating and you have to keep your ears open for your order number being called. The Deck: I wanted to try their most basic smashburger as a comparison and thought it was pretty solid for a smashburger. The edges of the patty was slightly crispy and I think that's one of the good indicators of a smashburger. It's got all the classic burger ingredients too like tomatoes and lettuce. If you want, you can get a second patty for an additional cost. Dirty Fries: I really liked that they use skinny fries. For me, this is the best way to get a good fries to topping ratio. When the fries are too thick, there's too much potatoes and not enough flavor. The chopped pickles and pickled onions really stands out so if you're not a fan of those flavors, you might not enjoy the dirty fries too much. Onion Rings: Hands down one of the best onion rings I've had in San Diego. It's definitely closer to a tempura style and I really liked how light the batter was. It was more onion than batter, which I don't find often nowadays. Highly recommend to share! Overall, satisfied with my meal and will be back to try their other burgers! read more

TL;DR: dirty fries are like a more sophisticated In-N-Out animal style fries. Pretty good. Location is a little tough to find. Just head towards Shakespeares, up the stairs and it'll be by the sitting area outdoors Didn't feel like a burger (will leave another update review if/when that happens) but the dirty fries were delicious. Note: there was only 1 staff member so I waited around for ~10 min before placing the order and another ~30 before I got my takeout order. Luckily the dirty fries hold up well and I enjoyed them. Burgers here are great. They open at 1130. We are still standing here, nobody is helping us. Doesn't seem to open when they say they do. Guess we'll go downstairs to Rubicon. Edit: half of our party stayed around and waited for service. When they got their food they were overwhelmingly disappointed with their burgers. They were much smaller and nowhere near the same quality that we have experienced here before. Just a terrible experience here at Burger Deck today. We will not be coming back to this location. We were looking for some place new, and BD came up. They have outdoor seating, and it's in this cool little area of India Street with other restaurants and a theater space. The young girl was friendly. My friend asked a lot of questions that not only annoyed me, but her too...LOL! The Dirty Deck was really good! Nice flavors on a good bun! I liked the crispy shoestring fries. They have sodas and beer and I got a Stone Delicious, not bad. I didn't take photos of the burgers because we were so hungry and just dove in. I came here as I had heard that the burgers were delicious, and I can't lie and say it wasn't good. The burger was tasty, the service was a little absent, and the atmosphere was nice. Outdoor seating, umbrellas over some tables, and people seemed to be enjoying themselves. Back to the service, I waited a moment (2 min, wondering at first if someone was away for a moment) and the staffer appeared from the back area, and took she took my order, which was simple enough, a couple burgers, The Deck (double smash burgers with cheese). I waited by the counter overlooking the street, and people watching, noticed of the two occupied tables only one had food, and the other table of 3, were chatting, so I was not sure if the were just hanging out or waiting, as there was another restaurant, Shakespeare's next door (their fish and chips is delicious). After about 7-10 min, I realized they were also waiting on food, so I went downstairs to order food from Rubicon, and my house had a few separate orders. I was down there for about 25 minutes, getting one sandwich, (another review, which I cut my order to only 1 sandwich, and we split at home, just due to the service). When I came back upstairs, my food didn't seem ready, but then from a side door the group had their burgers, fries and onion rings delivered hot and fresh to them with an apology that they were short staffed today. The cook, came out again and handed me my food , and offered the same apology. The connecting dot here is this was the attendant from downstairs, who seemed to be going up and downstairs, he was giving the cook a break and I believed didn't plan on it being a busy day ... Or busier than expected. The burger 4 stars, unfortunately shortcomings regardless impact especially service. The burgers were crispy, juicy, and packed with flavor. Simple ingredients, but done perfectly. One thing I really appreciated: no post-burger bloat. I left full but not uncomfortable, which never happens! My kids loved theirs too (which says a lot). Also, don't skip the spicy aioli--it's the perfect balance of heat and flavor. This little spot is a deck right by Shakespeare's pub. It could be tricky to find parking if it was a particularly busy day, but we were luckily in and out. The girl working at the front counter was very friendly and knowledgeable, and the burger was great. They also had their own version of animal style fries, which I preferred with the pickled onions. I would definitely recommend trying them out if you want a good burger. Prices are good, but just so you know it's one of those places you order fries separately from the burger lol read more

Checked out Burger Deck in the Mission Hills / India St area. Got the $12 Baja Deck--a smash burger with thick-cut bacon, fresh jalapeno slices, lettuce, tomato, and a tasty chipotle aioli.. and their really well done medium thickness fries ($5). I'm a sauce guy; and I can't tell you how I deplore needing to ASK for sauce of any kind. This place does NOT make you do that, which earns them extra high marks from me. The ketchup and Chipotle aioli are all right on the counter for you, along with a cilantro lime aioli (which I dipped a few bites of my burger in) and I think regular ranch--all freely accessible and yummy. Note: it's UPSTAIRS (which explains why I didn't see it when I first arrived), and has outdoor seating with little picnic tables that have umbrellas over them. There's also a quirky little shop up there with British gifts, foods, teas and things. Recommended spot! read more

Tried their Dirty Deck burger during their 1 year anniversary event. On this day, your Dirty Deck burger is only $1, with a purchase of fries and drink, no substitutions/alterations. I paid $9/meal and I'm glad I came during this event because I wouldn't pay original price for this. The smash burger tasted good and was a hearty size, but not worth the original price of $13... $20 if you make it a meal. Fries are nothing special. Drinks are just bottles of sodas and water. Could find better and cheaper smash burgers in SD. Service was nice from the gentleman but our pager didn't work so we didn't know our food was ready until we checked up on it. When my daughter and I came in after school, the first red flag was that no one was at the register for a while. While I was ordering, another customer came up asking about her food, which had already taken over 20 minutes. Our own order took 27 minutes, and the restaurant wasn't even busy. The cashier was rarely at the front -- customers waiting for refills had to call her out from the back. When our food finally came, it was not what I expected. My burger was mediocre at best, and my daughter's burger -- a $20 burger -- was really poor quality. I was charged extra for add-ons, which I didn't mind, but then my order came missing bacon, and when it did show up, it was just a single piece. The tray was dirty and hadn't even been wiped down, which added to the frustration. We ended up paying $57 for two meals, and honestly, it was not worth it.
