Visited Cluck N Sip on a whim during a recent trip to San Diego. I'm glad we did because the food was really good!! When we ordered we all got the 2 piece combo. I love that you could mix and match the chicken parts of your choice and are not just confined to 2 of the same. If you want a thigh and a tender you could do that, or if you wanted wings and a thigh you could do that! I had the chicken tenders which were very large. 2 pieces were more than enough for 1 person. The tenders were more like chicken breasts but cut into tenders. However they were still very good!! I tried the sichuan seasoning on the side and I really liked it. It reminded me of shichimi seasoning and had a mild spice. I believe you can order it spicier if you wish. As for sides, my kids got the fries and the fries were excellent. Someone in our party got the mashed potato and that was excellent also. My favorite side however was the hainan rice!!! It was so flavorful and fluffy, my daughter loved it as well. I have passed by this spot several times whenever I come to Hillcrest and did not know they have szechuan style fried chicken. I got a group order togo and we got the chicken rice, chicken strips, coleslaw, and biscuits. The service for picking up was great. All the food was fresh. I liked the chicken rice a lot. It was very flavorful, and honestly, I think I'd buy a chicken rice plate if they offered a full version of it. I'd come back to try more of their items. The parking is all street parking in Hillcrest so it can be a bit hard to find. read more

Parking on the street was absolutely nonexistent and due to the small lot behind the eatery being small, don't be surprised if you strike out there too. We eventually make it into the eatery and I am floored by the food offers. I came here assuming this was just gonna be the typical American fried chicken kind of deal and instead I am met with jambalaya, Hainan Chicken Rice, Sichuan Spicy Tenders/Wings, crispy flounder fish, & rice bowls???!!! All while priding themselves on serving Halal chicken. Our order: 9pc Chicken Tenders Order of Fries [famous] Mac N Cheese Food: These chicken tenders are huge!! Meaty, moist, lightly seasoned since we went with cluckin crispy. The kitchen staff truly has the cook time down to a science. Each tender was thoroughly cooked, scorching hot, and meat was so white/clean. Our order came with 2 dipping sauces and anything additional will be charged. We went with barbecue, hot Hillcrest, and honey mustard. Sauces were just okay IMO but my daughter sure loved the honey mustard. The fries were good but I'm not a fan of really crispy fries. I really like this spot! They are not your traditional fried chicken place. They have some spices imported from Japan, which makes it a little more unique. I ordered and my food was ready pretty much as soon as I finished deliberating over fountain drinks. It came in the CUTEST reusable bag with their logo, what a nice touch! I got the 2pc spicy meal with a leg and a thigh, with a side of potato wedges, and the hillcrest sauce. Their meals also come with a piece of buttered toast. Everything was neatly packaged, with sauces and utensils in little paper bags. As soon as I got in the car I knew I was in for a treat. I was basically hotboxing mouthwatering spices in there my whole drive home. I snuck a potato wedge and those babies were fried to perfection! Flavorful with the perfect mealy interior. With this chicken, all I can say is it was love at first bite. The breading was NOT overly heavy, the chicken was so juicy and tender, and most importantly the SPICE was so unexpectedly delicious. It's not straight up heat like Dave's hot chicken, but more like a flavorful spice mix! It reminds me of the spicy powder I like to use to dip lamb skewers, and I definitely taste the Asian influence. The hillcrest sauce is similar to the creamy sauce that every chicken place has nowadays, but I think it was less cloying than some of the ones I've tried. With the buttered toast I assembled a sandwich with sauce, potato wedges, and meat, and lemme tell you that first bite was INSANE. For $7.99 this was a pretty good deal !! They give a TON of potato wedges, and I only got the regular size for my side. I cleared my plate and was definitely stuffed and immensely satisfied afterwards. There are options for chicken tenders and wings, either spicy or normal. They have a great deal, which is a 2 piece chicken combo with your choice of side (Mac & cheese, mashed potatoes, potato wedges, etc) and a fountain drink for $7.99. If you get this option you'll get juicy and tender that is crispy and fried. Though we opted for the no spicy option, we were able to taste the spicy option and there was a hint of spice (not overbearing), which made the chicken flavorful and enjoyable. I tried their whole wings, classic chicken sandwich, tenders, mashed potatoes and gravy and their Mac n cheese. Mac and cheese was a little disappointing and reminded me of like a KFC Mac n cheese with a processed cheese kind of taste. Other than that, I had no complaints. Came back a second time, and food was just as amazing as the first. Food is fresh, hot and it is a pretty decent portion especially for chicken these days. They do hand out reusable bags with each order. I think maybe encorporating some kind of rewards program where you get a $1 off if you bring back your reusable bag or something. I just don't have the need to keep a bunch of their bags because I feel bad tossing them since they are reusable. So happy Hillcrest area has a chicken spot finally that is actually good and not extremely overpriced. Cluck N Sip has taken over a suite in Hillcrest that used to be the home of a fried chicken shop. I noticed that all the chairs and tables have been removed. All that was left were some countertops if you wanted to stand inside and eat your food. Some stools would be nice in case a diner does want to sit while eating. Parking was either curbside on Washington St out front or behind the building in a shared lot. The menu continued the chicken theme of the predecessor business. Fried chicken pieces, tenders, sandwiches, and wings were offered either a la carte or as a combo which was a choice of one side (out of six possibilities) and a drink. Eight sauces were available at $0.50 each beyond the two or more that you received based on the size of an order. I ended up buying a two tender combo with mashed potatoes & gravy as the side. While I was paying, I pointed out to the cashier that it was $0.60 cheaper to buy two tenders by the piece than two tenders together. I sampled the mango and watermelon drinks that were in fountain dispensers. Both had a weak flavor which meant they needed to be less diluted. My food was ready in about 10 minutes, perhaps even faster than customers ahead of me who had larger orders. The staff placed the items in a branded cloth tote bag which was a nice touch. I returned the bag after I finished eating at an outside countertop in front of the suite. The mashed potatoes and gravy were okay while the piece of honey butter sliced bread added a sweet element to the meal. As for the two tenders, I do agree with other reviewers that the breading did not stick well to the meat. It was hot and crispy though, and the pieces of meat were large. The bar for hot chicken in the SD area has been raised significantly over the past few years. Cluck N Sip will need some time to perfect their operation. I wanted to try a different fried chicken place so we sought out Cluck N Sip. This place is very welcoming upon entry. There is a lot of staff working, and the greet everyone upon entry. I love the freshly cooked chicken. It is lightly breaded and is very tasty. You get a choice of their dipping sauces as well. I had honey mustard and their Hillcrest Sauce which is a Mayo-Ketchup combo (basically fry sauce). The combo orders we had came with a slice of white bread coated with honey butter (delicious!) and a choice of a side. I asked for the Spicy Mac N Cheese but was told they don't have it yet (uh, why not?). So I settled for the regular Mac N Cheese. This was fairly good. I had to knock this place down a star as there is virtually no seating inside. There is a long bar area but there was only 1-2 stools available for use. There should be a lot more there. We had to eat at the only other seating option which as at the very cute picnic table outside in the back. We were swatting flies the entire meal which made it very unpleasant. The menu also has a misspelling. They have the side of mashed potatoes and gravy listed as "gray" instead of gravy. They had a bowl of free key chains at the counter and give you a reusable bag for your order. Most people seem to take their food to go as this place is in a busy neighborhood.
