The burger looked really good on video, so I was excited to give it a try for myself. The first thing that makes this place different is that it's operating out of the garage of a home in Bonita. I had never had a burger served from someone's home before, so I thought, why not? It was something new and I was looking forward to the experience. Unfortunately, the experience didn't live up to the hype. When I arrived, there were zero people ordering, yet after placing my order I waited approximately 42 minutes for one burger. Since it was my first visit, I asked what their most popular burger was. The woman helping me recommended the double cheeseburger, so that's what I ordered. The price was $18.78. I thought that was expensive, but I figured that for almost $19, this burger must be something special. After the long wait, my burger finally arrived. No fries. No drink. Just the burger for $18.78. I also had to ask if they had any sauce. The guy who brought out my burger went back and got some for me. I do want to give him credit--he was extremely friendly, helpful and had a cool surfer/beach vibe. His customer service was probably the best part of my visit. As for the burger itself, I was very disappointed. For me, it was a basic burger that didn't come close to justifying the price or the 42-minute wait. I've had much better burgers for considerably less money, including at places where you're getting a full restaurant environment, restrooms, seating and sometimes fries and a drink. I don't mind paying premium prices for great ingredients, great flavor and great quality. But if you're charging almost $19 for a burger by itself, I expect it to be memorable. This one simply wasn't. The atmosphere actually reminded me a little of the laid-back surfer vibe of Hodad's, which I liked. But when it came to the food and value, this was nowhere near that level for me. I respect Taco Fiend's reviews, but this is one recommendation where my experience was completely different from his. I finally was able to make it down to Burger Kook. This is my first time at a food establishment run out of a house. Boy was I glad I went. I spoke with a young worker taking my order and told her it was my first time. Then one of the owners came out to greet me with a great pleasant attitude. She asked if I was either military or police or firefighter and said it would be free fries if I was. I ordered the Double 1/4 lb cheeseburger and animal style fries. I started with the fries and the fries themselves were perfectly fried smothered with a thousand island type sauce, cheese, and perfectly grilled onions. I overheard the owner telling one of the customers the fries were fried in beef tallow. I've had animal style fries before but these were so delicious. All of the flavors came together with each bite. I then tried the burger and I now understand why it's a highly rated establishment. Just the bun alone gave a nice mild crunch that added to the experience. The sauce was a thousand island type sauce and it also had the yummy grilled onions in it. There was also lettuce, tomatoes, pickles and cheese. The burger patties should always be the star in a great burger and the patties were. I later spoke to one of the owners and she told me I could ask for peppers the next time which I definitely will. I love jalapenos on my burger but she said they have spicier ones. The owner running this spot is super welcoming, and there are chill tunes playing. There are tables on the driveway, and one two-person table inside the garage so I hung out there. It was a bit tricky finding Burger Kook as the address pointed towards a house and I was expecting a stand alone restaurant..  Turns out Burger Kook is operating out of the owner's garage and seating is in the driveway. I ordered a bacon burger with double patties.  Bun was soft and fresh.  Lettuce and tomato were crisp and fresh.  Beef was tender with a nice char.  Bacon was good and salty.  Double burger was a huge amount of food and I barely finished it. 2nd visit I tried the full steak sandwich and fries.  This is a really juicy sandwich and needs to be eaten quickly before the bread gets soggy.  Loved the tender and juicy beef.  I added bacon and the salty flavor perfectly complemented the beef.  The full sandwich was a huge dinner for me.  Fries were fried in beef tallow, crispy on the outside with a delicious beef tallow flavor. After driving by a few times, we decided to try Burger kook for Saturday night dinner! You will not be disappointed! Street parking was available at 7pm on Saturday. Even though restaurant is on a main neighborhood street, they have a fenced in area for children to play. I was able to eat my dinner while it was hot lol (parents understand). We ordered the beer cheese fries, a bacon cheeseburger and a cheeseburger. The food was really good. You can tell the ingredients are all top quality. My burger was filling without being greasy or too heavy. The owner and chef were extremely welcoming! He and his wife made sure we were taken care of at all times. This place was fantastic! This is not the typical burger joint you would expect. Right outside the facade of a home, this place doubles as an outdoor cafeteria for you to enjoy your home cooked burgers. The service was fantastic the ladies were so kind and vibrant. I really wanted to love it because I'm a Chula Vistan through and through, but the burger just didn't live up to my expectations. The lack of flavor in the burger specifically stood out to me. I'm guessing this is due to the lack of seasoning. Second, I got an OG Kook burger, fries, and a drink and ended up paying around $30 for everything (I think this was with a 20% tip). The fries didn't stand out and the soda was in a can. Service was a little slow, but not terrible. I'm glad they are succeeding, but I want to be honest with my review and say that the food just wasn't worth it to me. Probably not a place I'd go back to. The bacon is crispy and the egg was cooked just how I like it! Mostly cooked and a lil runny. The chicken nuggets are legit! Tastes way better than Mickey D's! I've had this spot stored in my memory bank for a good time & then hubby recently brings up Burger Kook. Then, it was time to follow through. After reading some reviews- how busy the line can get once they opened- all true! Yes, they do have online ordering- and this is an option patrons will use before business hours start going.... So, even though we arrived first, we were warmly greeted. Conversation started flowing so fast and excitement to show us the burger inventory from West Coast Prime Meats. We tried to tinker ordering online while staff quickly finished setting up. Celina (Selena?) greeted us at the register and saw us tinkering with the online and said we could just order with her, instead. Perfect! Because I was bummed looking at the online menu & noticed all the milkshakes were SOLD OUT. So, when I asked Celina about it- it was all good to go! (They just happened to run out of ice cream at that time.) Hopefully you also follow Burger Kook's IG stories because lots of good stuff if you catch it at the right time! Hint Hint! For starters, WOW. I am so glad I found this place on social media. We came on a Friday afternoon around 5PM and by the time we sat down to eat, it was PACKED. For good reason. The food was DELICIOUS! The owners were such cool people. There were a few tables for outdoor seating. Dog friendly which is always a plus for me! The milkshake was BOMB. The kind where it's usually made from something like Wagyu beef and you're expected to eat it with a knife and fork. This place is none of those. If you went to a friend's backyard BBQ, and they hand-formed top quality, steak-worthy ground beef, and put them over fire with all the love they could, hand sliced backyard tomatoes, hand leafed local lettuce, and put it all on a high quality bun, you might have one like these. The staff is friendly and engaging. Service is great, but can be slow when too many people arrive. They create a cool welcoming vibe. The food tasted good. But... the pricing does not match the product. I went in fully wanting to support this family business restaurant. I ordered a double 1/4 added bacon, lettuce wrapped and fries. My wife ordered a bacon burger and fries. She brought her own gluten feee buns since on a previous call the owner said they don't have gluten free buns but they can prep a bun she brings in as long as it's not a serious allergy. It wasn't, so we took the bun. She got her burger bag with a cold bun (since they are refrigerated), because they didn't heat it on the grill like the other buns, and she was very disappointed. Now as I mentioned, it was only two burgers, two fries. No drink, no shake, no added stuff. The total bill was $61!!!!! That was way too pricey for what we got. If they were to adjust their prices, they might get returning customers. The restaurant is instagram famous right now, but without realistic price adjustment, they might not maintain a customer base after the initial visit. read more
