Once a staple of Queens Center Mall, they now have recently re-opened at a new location in Astoria with an expanded menu. The space has an awkward layout. The takeout ordering counter is tucked all the way in the back in next to the kitchen, so you have to weave through the tables to get there. There's also no designated waiting area which means you're standing right by the kitchen entrance and constantly in the way of staff going in and out. I stopped by on their second day of service and the place was packed, every table was full. It looked like the staff was a bit overwhelmed the crowd. My takeout order took a good thirty minutes, so I think there are still a few kinks to work out. I ordered the Curry Chicken Palata and an order of Pat Tote (fried chicken wontons). The Chicken Curry Palata comes with flaky flatbread and a small container of chicken curry. The curry was mildly spiced with a slightly creamy consistency and generous chunks of chicken and potatoes. I liked the flavor overall, but found it just a little too oily for my taste. I actually ended up eating the curry with plain rice instead of the flatbread and preferred it that way. The fried chicken wontons were the standout. It was fried perfectly with very thin crispy wrappers which I loved. The house tamarind sauce perfectly paired with it and helped cut through the richness of the fried wontons. Overall, I'm glad to see them back and I think Burmese food deserves more representation in New York. They also offer weekday lunch specials, so I'm planning to come back and give those a try.

Burmese Bites has been featured at the Queens Night Market, Church fairs, and also at the food court in the Queens Center Mall. This restaurant in Astoria is their new venture; what a great addition to the neighborhood! It's a family run business and the family works hard every night! Open 5pm to 9pm nightly; Closed on Sundays. *For takeout and pickup orders, enter via their side entrance. *They have a lunch menu but it's not available yet since their hours are 5pm-9pm during this soft-opening period. They do NOT take reservations; not even for large parties. So don't be surprised if you have to wait for a table. They're quite popular!! We came early on a Tues evening, and didn't have a problem getting a table for 8ppl but by the time we left, there was quite a few ppl waiting for a table. Their menu is quite extensive! It includes appetizers, Palata flat breads, classic Burmese dishes, noodles, salads & dessert. The hard part is choosing which dishes to try since they ALL sound delicious! It's best to go with a few people and share dishes. Family-Style is definitely the way to go! *Note that they've only been open for less than a month, and some menu items may not be available yet. But rest assured; there are plenty of dishes on their menu to pick from. Here is tonight's Menu (shared by 4): -- Lahpet Thoke ($15): Tea Leaf Salad. Good; pretty standard; fresh and tasty -- Mohingo (Natl Dish of Burma) ($15): Catfish soup w.lemongrass, tumeric, ginger & cilantro. This was my first time trying this dish and I thought it was good; even better if you add some fish sauce for an extra flavor zing! -- Ah Meh Tha Hin ($19): Beef Curry w.lemongrass & herbs; served w.Rice. This was my fave dish of the night. The beef was tender and the curry sauce had depth of flavor; so flavorful! -- Nga Hin ($19): Basa Fish Curry cooked in Burmese Masala; served w.Rice. This was my 2nd fave dish of the night. The fish was meaty and cooked perfectly; not overcooked at all. The curry sauce was delicious. -- NgaShint Chaunt Sat ($25): Crispy Eel in spicy chili mix; served w.Rice. Good dish. It reminded me of the Szechuan dish. Spicy but a tad bit too salty for me. -- Keema Palata ($12): Crispy Flatbread stuffed with ground chicken and spices. This was such a satisfying dish. The flatbread was toasty crispy goodness, and the stuffing was very flavorful. -- Dessert: they have lots of dessert options on their menu but we were too full and skipped it. Next time! Surprisingly, there aren't that many Burmese restaurants in NY but Burmese Bites ranks in the top 3 for me. I would definitely return to try other dishes and repeat some faves. Customer service was friendly and welcoming. Not sure what to order? Just ask. They will offer suggestions! Parking: free street parking available, as well as metered parking until 7pm. Looking forward to a return visit SOON! :-)

Tried this in Japan fest and loved it and I'm so happy they have a new location. I tried the dry peanut chicken noodle, chicken palata and tea leaf salad. Everything was delicious, I just wish they made it more spicy! The owner came and spoke to us which was nice

Original tea leaf salad and coconut chicken noodle soup were both incredible. The salad was a little pricey (I think like $21 for the small?) but worth it. Also note there is no restroom.

There are already very limited options for Burmese food in the city, so we traveled over 45 minutes specifically to try this place. Only after arriving did we find out that they are cash only, something that was not clearly advertised online. We explained that we had traveled 45+ minutes to get there and asked if there was any alternative way to pay. We offered Zelle, Venmo, or even placing the order through DoorDash and simply eating the food there. Every option was declined. I also explained that I didn't have a debit card with me, but there was absolutely no willingness to work with us or offer any alternative. Being cash-only is one thing. Failing to clearly communicate that beforehand and then showing zero flexibility when customers have traveled a significant distance is another. Very disappointing customer experience. I genuinely don't understand how a business can operate this way and expect customers to return. We certainly won't be coming back.

RIP Urban Hawker…read more Though if you wanted to recreate that part in movie plots where the protagonist we all thought had veered into untimely demise surprises everyone by miraculously making a comeback--I'm down for that too! Though on a serious note--kinda bummed bc I wanted to make one last visit before they closed July 17, though unfortunately I didn't make it back to town in time :( What a loss of a cultural connection point for the city! Food is a gateway to experiencing and understanding other cultures and this location was front and center in midtown, blocks from Times Square. In a sea of other cuisines, this part of Southeast Asia didn't/doesn't have much representation in general in Manhattan, and even less so now. Scouring articles and comments online I'm keeping my fingers crossed that they're able to find a different space in the near future! Was it the best food court? I'll admit this was easily debatable for many reasons. But each stall had their own standouts. Tradsiyon was a later addition though had really solid braised meat and veggie bowls; Hainan Jones stepped into a midtown scene several years ago with no other similar Hainanese chicken spots in midtown (a few others thankfully are around today); Kopifellas brought uniquely Singaporean/Malasian tea and coffee options; I still remember the first bite of Prawnaholic's signature shrimp and rib noodles tasting that savory goodness for the first time; and most of all I will dearly miss this location of Lady Wong, where I rarely walked away empty handed. Thank you for the memories (and think about that movie plot twist I mentioned above)!

I think I grieved more for Urban Hawker closing than when my dad died…read more Urban Hawker wasn't successful in the way you'd expect any food hall to be successful-- their food wasn't spectacular. I rarely went home invoking a strong enthusiastic response to come back to eat something again. Their strong suite was location, space, and variety. What I loved most--besides having a reliable bathroom in Midtown--was what it became for the people around it. It was a place where office workers could decompress after work, grab a beer with coworkers, or catch up with friends they hadn't seen in a while. There was something refreshing about the atmosphere. People seemed relaxed and unguarded, shedding the polished professional persona they'd worn all day. It felt like watching the city exhale for a little while. And another thing I appreciated was their attempt to represent different nationalities under one roof. The more common items performed the worse and that's probably when you come to a space dedicated to hawker style cuisine, you expect to try some of their more novel stuff like Coffee Pork Fried Rice (from a stall that specialized in fried rice) or Noodles in Bechamel. I also frequently enjoyed their only drinks provider for the best Yuen Yang I've ever had. The method for making them seems theatrical at first but when you've had one that wasn't properly aerated, you truly taste the chalky bitter tannins. It was a good thing there was an experience worker there (possibly the owner). Who you got to make your drink was hit or miss because at varying times, my gf would be lucky enough to run into the one guy who could do it with oatmilk (she's lactose intolerant). It's sad to see this place go and there'll be many times ahead of us where we point out that that's where the Urban Hawker used to be.

We ordered the roti & massaman curry, summer rolls, Beef Pad See Ew & Shrimp Pad Thai. The pad thai was too sweet, like they went overboard with the palm sugar. The Pad See Ew was the highlight of the meal, nearly perfect. The summer rolls were also great, and the massaman curry had great flavor, however the curry was very thin and didnt hold onto the roti very well and for $12 i expected more than 8 small triangles of roti. We still had a full cup of curry left when the roti was gone. The real problem I had was when it came time to pay the check. I was asked "cash or card" and i said card and the waiter brought over a sign from another table with a 5% cash discount and a 2.95% credit card surcharge. None of this information was disclosed by the server or on the menu, so it's illegal. When I called them out on their bullshit, they played dumb. I left cash for the amount of the bill and not a penny more. Here's your tip : don't try and fuck your customers with hidden fees and be transparent about your pricing.
