Anthony Bourdain's dish was super spicy to me and I sort of regret getting it. It had a wonderful mix of flavors that I haven't really tried before - tangy and spicy. If I could tolerate the spice better I would've probably liked it just as much. The skewers were really good as were the roti canai. The coconut dessert was also really good, probably my favorite especially after I had such a spicy main dish, but I wish I was able to get a metal spoon to scrape out the insides of the coconut so that I could get at the meat. Everything came out pretty quickly. Don't really understand why people were so tough on this place - solid food and nice service. There was no one else there so it seems like most of the seating is reserved for walk-in customers. The restaurant decor and art on the walls are very vibrant and I liked the long, golden table. We had the roti canai, pineapple fried rice, and the curry laksa. Everything was good and the portion sizes were decent as we were not too hungry. Had a reservation for 5 on a friday at 6:15 PM. It was quite busy in the restaurant and a little bit loud, so it was a but difficult to hear each other without shouting, but the food came out very quickly. We ordered the papaya salad, roti canai, and the satay ayam for appetizers. We also ordered the curry laksa with chicken and thin egg noodles and the nasi lemak for our main dishes. We found this to be just enough food for all of us. My favorite bite was definitely the satay. The chicken was incredibly tender, and the peanut sauce was delicious. We made a reservation for Laut on a rainy Saturday night. Restaurant was crowded, but we were seated fairly quickly. We started with the roti canai, which was truly excellent. when I was visiting New York, I wanted to see how their malaysian restaurants are. I found Laut since it was the first Michelin star malaysian restaurant in NYC. I came alone right when it opened. The entire lunch menu was $18 with some additional charges depending on protein you select. I ordered the Char Kway Teow and Roti Canai. All lunch orders come with egg roll and soup. I loved how flakey and big the roti was and the curry was slightly spiced perfectly. The Char Kway Teow was really good and would definitely order again if I'm ever back! Most places doesn't get the flavor right but Laut did an amazing job getting that wok flavor in the noodles. I couldn't finish the noodles so I had to pack it and leave to airport. I ate it for dinner once I landed and still tasted great. I definitely wished I could have order a lot more to try but I was alone so next time. Eating a meal while sweating through your clothes is miserable, but the food made it even worse. Everything we ordered was completely bland and lacked any real flavor. Had an interesting time at Laut to say the least with another one of our couple friends and a friend of mine who was the connection between both of us couples. We got a nice corner table to ourselves. Little bit away from the door and also hidden a bit from the overall bustle. After chatting for a while, we finally got to ordering drinks. Now about the drinks - it was some of the most unique presentation I've ever seen. The Api-Api I got - which came in what looked like a take out rice container - was something I've never been before. Kudos to the creativity. From there, we started to order the food, which surprisingly came out very fast even after it took a while to get the waitresses' attention. We tried the Roti Telur to share. Was pretty solid and this was more of a unique Malaysian dish of sorts. We then split off our own ways to order the entrees. We did get a tofu satay & also the fresh pineapple wok fry to share between the both of us. The tofu satay was a bit too bland and dry, in my humble opinion. The pineapple wok fry was good too. I did wish I could have more, but couldn't be greedy. We then split a mango cheesecake for dessert. We were gonna order the coconut pudding, but unfortunately it wasn't available. Made a reservation to ensure our spot, and good thing we did, cause it got packed within 20 minutes of opening during lunch hours on a Sunday. Upon entering, I was so impressed with the interior, gorgeous wall art, beautiful ceiling, and a small bar in the back corner. The menu had so many exciting dishes. They were pricey but that's expected in the city. We picked a bunch to have a full on family style meal. We ordered the roti canai, roti telur, ilat bakar (fish), duck curry, Singapore crispy soft shell chili crab, baby bok choi, Hainanese roast chicken with rice, Malaysian curry with shrimp and side of bao buns. The dishes started coming out one after another within short intervals. All the dishes were so amazing, huge portions, full of flavors. My favorite were the chili crab, duck, roti canai and the Thai iced tea. All of us were belly full as we throughly enjoyed all the dishes. We even had some leftovers to take home. This was good but not outstanding. I think I had high hopes. I came with my friend on a Thursday night, we had an 8PM reservation, but they let us sit early which was very nice. My friend and I shared the late night fried rice and the curry laksa with tofu and thin egg noodles. The fried rice was not good. It didn't have any flavor/spice - was very disappointing. I'm not sure if it is supposed to be like that, but I ate some for leftovers alongside my mala project leftover fried rice, and it didn't even come close. The curry Laksa was good, but I was expecting something more from the hype. I've had very similar tasting dishes elsewhere. Aside from that, it was still a delicious dish. For those who were unaware, "Laut" means "LOUD"! Admittedly not enough of a din to induce tinnitus, but certainly enough to make the hearing of your dining companion's conversation challenging. I could find not one soft surface in the restaurant that could absorb sound. Making matters worse, describing the space as cramped would be a understatement. Tuesday night's dinner (24March2026) could only be described as meh. Its only saving graces being the soft-shell crab pieces ($25) and my Lychee martini. For someone who grew up visiting KL and Singapore regularly, Laut missed the mark for me. Flavors were good but far off from other NYC Malaysian restaurants, let alone meals I've had back in Malaysia. Started off with the roti which was chewy and flaky that went well with the curry sauce. I just wish it was warmer. The butter garlic crab is something I would get again because of how tasty and crispy it was. It does have some sprinkled salt, sugar, and a little of MSG which made it even better. I wish they had a salted duck egg version which would have been amazing with the crab. Appreciated how they gave us lots of curry leaves! For mains, the laksa really fell short of my expectations. The soup was bland; all I could taste was the coconut milk. I wish it had more spice, more flavors, more umami. The thick egg noodles were also just fine because they were a little overcooked. The squid pieces, fish balls, tofu were solid. For our rendang, we wanted to switch it up and got the fish instead of beef. The fish itself was solid - fried nicely with a crunchy batter and tender meat. The rendang sauce itself was more peanut-y and tasty on its own; however it lacked the herbaciousness, the lemongrass, the spice that rendang is known for. I would have given the food a 3.5 but the service dropped it down to a 3. It felt like we had to seek our server's attention and the dessert menu wasn't offered, when I heard other tables talking about it. With the dim lighting and prices, I think they were trying to deliver a more elevated experience, but I was put off by the old curry stains on the lights and menus. I came here with a group of 9 people for lunch. Service was great, food came really quickly but I also think it wasn't too busy for lunch either. We started with the satay and papaya salad. I would skip out on the satay, it was a bit dry and normally it comes with a sauce but they said their dish does not come with a dipping sauce. We also ordered the roti and interestingly, it was more like a roti pancake that had filling inside. Not what we were expecting but it was pretty decent. Now the stars of the show definitely was their noodles and rice dishes! We ordered the char kway teow and drunkin noodles. Both were super flavorful! Big bold flavors, I really enjoyed this noodle a lot and have never tried anything like it anywhere else.
