I stopped by BurnBox Pizza on a Thursday afternoon after leaving work early for a wellness appointment. My son's daycare happened to be closed that day, so we linked up with his godmother for lunch. I gave my toddler a few options -- Chipotle, CAVA, honeygrow -- but in true toddler fashion, he wanted pizza. And not just any pizza... VEGAN pizza. As a mom of a child with allergies, finding solid vegan kid-friendly options is no small feat. We initially considered other spots, but nothing hit right until we found BurnBox in Kettering. It's located in a shopping plaza with plenty of parking, and the minute we walked in, I noticed a sign offering a free Plain Jane pizza when you download their app. You already know I paused entry to grab that deal. The interior is bold and modern -- black, white, and red décor, floor lettering that reads "Good Vibes Only," and an open kitchen where you can watch your pizza being made fresh. The staff was friendly, greeted us immediately, and helped us with our order. We ordered the vegan "Plain Jane" for my son and "The Godfather" pizza for the adults. Total was $23.44 before tax/tip. I appreciated the extra touch -- once the pizzas were ready, we were asked if we wanted additional toppings. I added some Old Bay to ours and oregano to the vegan pizza. My toddler loved his pizza so much he prayed over it mid-bite and almost finished the whole thing. That says a lot! Midway through our meal, I decided to try the wings -- 8 wings for $11.49 (half buffalo, half honey lemon pepper). The buffalo wings were my favorite -- crispy, juicy, oven-baked, and flavorful without being drenched in sauce. The honey lemon pepper was more of a dry rub but still tasty. I was in the neighborhood and had to try this black owned pizza restaurant. When I entered the restaurant it was very clean and inviting. This was my first time visiting so I ordered the popular shrimp scampi pizza with added pepperoni. The ingredients were fresh and my pizza was made to order in the nice brick oven. My pizza was soooo good. My only complaint: The staff was not as engaging as I would have liked and I didn't appreciate one of the employees wearing a bonnet as it is truly unprofessional. I'm not sure what happened to this place between when it opened during the pandemic until now, but what used to be a great place is now terrible. I went there recently and the workforce has completely changed, so perhaps there is new management. What I saw at 7pm on a weekday night was atrocious. Unfortunately, I had already placed an online order so food was paid for otherwise I'd have about faced. First off, the food was not done and my wing order hadn't even been started though I purposely arrived 10 mins after pick up time for leeway. More than that though, hygiene and cleanliness? These people never heard of them! There were three men in the place and tables were also empty. One man was at the register and greeted me, then disappeared to the back for who knows what. One gentleman was making dough; though sweet tempered he looked harried and did not have any gloves on. Not a soul did, in fact. There were gnats flying around the tip jar, which is strange to me because there shouldn't be any food particles nor water in a tip jar... The worst offense? The last guy, an older gentleman with a pot belly protruding from the thin wife beater tank top he wore, was idly standing at a food station gnawing on wings and licking his fingers while watching the tv. The whole experience was off putting along with a weird smell hanging in the air. I'm not at all opposed to employees eating obviously, but sir, put on an actual shirt and do that mess in the back. I picked up my 40 dollars worth of food which found itself immediately in my trash can upon coming home. And that was only because I couldn't find one near the facility. Whatever magic burn box managed to capture pre 2025 has vacated the premises. Lackluster service and insufficient cleanliness within the prep area. Just watched the server use the only used/dirty pizza slicer that was placed along a set of five other clean slicers. I was the only order placed within the 5-8 minutes I was there. If there were multiple orders, no problem, but looking at a dirty slicer when there were five other clean slicers next to it was next level sloth (and that's a daily sin). One server. I kept my expectations pretty low initially and this pizza surprised me. I've been on the hunt for a pizza reminiscent of Shakeys pizza back in the day. This is the closest I've come to that Shakeys crust texture and taste. For that reason alone, I will be back. The service was a little slow given that I was the only person in the store for a while. I didn't mind since I needed a chance to look over the in-store menu and see that it was slightly different from the online version. The staff was very friendly once we got my order started. It's clear they're not accustomed to handling large orders. In spite of the fact that I kept telling them I planned to order multiple items, they would keep asking me what I wanted, prepare that item, then come back and ask me if I needed something else. That meant the first pizza would go in the oven, come out and be sitting on the counter waiting for the last pizza to be prepared. It was a unique style of pizza from a personal pizza restaurant. The pizza's crust was incredible and had the amazing taste and quality that you get from higher end pizzas. It was heavenly. While pizza was quickly prepared and ready this did not hinder the taste of the pizza which can come from quick service pizzerias. Well out running errands. I realize that the hunger monster who is kicking my butt. I wasn't in the mood to go back home and cook it for some reason I wanted pizza, so I searched yelp for pizza places that are closest to me and ended up here. I am so happy that my food angels guided me to this place because it is perfection. I'm normally not a big pizza eater, but one of my consistent disappointments is when I go to a pizza place and they don't have one of their premade pizza with the toppings that I want. So I end up either leaving or getting a pizza with toppings that I end up regretting later. This concept, solves for all of that! You can choose one of their pre-set combinations, or a build your own, which is what I always do. When I walked in, I was immediately as warmly greeted and had to take a moment to understand the concept and make my selections. It's kind of like chipotle where you walk down the line and tell them what you want. They are various selections of crust, including cauliflower. They are various selections of sauces Then you get to choose your veggies, your meat and other seasonings. Once you've made your selection, it goes into the oven. There's also a wonderful selection of drinks and juices. After your pizza is cooked, you can add additional seasonings and sauces, and then goes into your own personal box. It is a little bit longer than walking into a regular pizza shop m, choosing two slices having them warm it up and walk out. But the end product that you get here is significantly better. The pizza is amazingly delicious, and the crust, oh my God, is just crispy and light and just crust perfection. I found out about this place through a magazine article. It was being spotlighted because of their practices. Apparently for every pizza that you order another pizza is given to someone that suffers from food insecurity. How could you not love that and want to support? Once I realized it was right down the street I knew I had to try it out. Burn ox is located in Watkins Mills Plaza and honestly, I didn't notice it was there. It is a typical assembly line type of pizza spot a d they advertise that if you download the app you get a free pizza. I used the link in this app and no my pizza was not free. I got the plain Jane, which is basically a cheese pizza, with fresh basil. I subbed the regular tomato sauce with the spicy tomato sauce because everybody likes spice, right!?!? Unfortunately, I was thinking I would be getting a margarita but I think I misunderstood. Anywho, there were out of fresh basil so I had to get the dried basil. The pizza was good, the him tasted it and liked it too and he is super hard to please with pizza spots. It was cooked nicely and was a great size. I think this spot has a few more kinks to work out. They move kind of slow, an in app order took over 30 minutes to receive. I wish that whomever is cutting the pizza would do a better job of wiping the pizza cutters in between, they get a little gunked up and it isn't quite pleasant to look at. A few people on social media raved about this place, so I decided to give them another chance. I was expecting the kinks to be ironed out a little more. The wait wasn't as long as my first visit, but it was pretty long considering I only had one person ahead of me. Even if I could continue to overlook the service, I simply cannot overlook the taste of the pizza. We ordered the same thing we got the first time (except I added spinach to mine) so it could be a true comparison. The pizzas again tasted like nothing and neither of our pizzas were cooked thoroughly. I've been trying to get here for a long time! I finally made it and was happy I did. First let's talk about the amazing customer service from the time you walk in and leave. The manager was a sweetheart and she told me to download the app to receive my free pizza. Super dope of her because I had order trout pizzas . This restaurant was very neat, organized and clean. I love when I walk into an establishment like that. It's in a great area as well. Will tell my mom in love about this spot since she lives close. The vegan pizza here is really good, my kids are vegan and enjoy it. The negative that I'm at my wits end with is... I ALWAYS order my pizza no less than 30 min in advance on nights where we've been out all day and we want a quick dinner, and EVERY TIME I get here to pick it up it's NEVER done. When I first heard of this new pizza shop in Central PG County I was excited to give it a shot. From the branding to the social media presence, I wanted to experience this place. Overall not an OK experience. For me pizza shops are rated in two categories: good and exceptional. Rarely do I experience bad pizza. While good is nothing to sigh over, this experience at Burn Box didn't leave me overly enthusiastic. The pizzas were OK however I felt like the pizzas were missing something that otherwise would create separation and distinguish them from other pizza shops that would receive a 4*. I wasn't thrilled about the cheese and the flavor didn't have me wanting more. The cheese seemed to solidify almost immediately. The toppings seemed fresh however the flavor just wasn't there even after I added some of the extra shaker seasonings they had available. In my assessment it boils down to sauce and cheese quality. I visited prior to midday on a Friday and it wasn't packed at all. There was only two customers ahead of me. The customer service was OK. I really enjoyed the ambiance and decor. This was my 1st visit to a BurnBox. I have been to Blaze Pizza, 1,000 degrees and Mod pizza. Blaze topped my list with 1,000 degrees way, way below the other two. Now it's alway dicey when you go to a quick-food restaurant shortly before closing and on Christmas Eve when everybody is trying to get home for the holiday. Surprisingly the staff was very professional and accommodating to me and my 4, but also the single gentleman who entered after the store had closed but the door wasn't locked. They honored all our request. Such as changing gloves because one in our party has a severe allergy to cheese. They never displayed any announce or hurry attitudes or behaviors. While I understand that I came in an hour before closing each time the vibe I'm getting is: "I'm doing the bare minimum because management isn't here" "They can leave if they don't like" "Why should I speak when a customer greets me?" " they will get what they get" An hour before closing is yes the end of the evening but a paying customer shouldn't feel like a burden. I was excited to try this new pizza spot, but the experience fell short. The woman making the orders was not hospitable at all. As a first time customer I was unsure of the ordering process and had questions. Each time she answered my questions it was with attitude. The young lady working the register, however was much more friendly. I ordered the crab catcher with shrimp, spinach, & extra crab meat. The pizza was extremely salty and I'm thinking it's because of the seafood sauce. Too salty that I couldn't even enjoy it. Even with double crab it still wasn't much crab meat on the pizza and you can tell by the video. I spent about $22 and I don't think it was worth it at all since half of it went in the trash. The other "Burnbox" pizza was seriously undercooked (barley tan on the bottom). The individuals making the pizza where quite outgoing, friendly, and helpful but the person that they put on the checkout needs to be pleasant and have some communication skills.... this person had none. I was excited to check out this new, black-owned pizza spot! I likened it to & Pizza in that you can build-your-own but there's no locations nearby so I was looking forward to a new local fave. BUT...eh. I went on a Thursday evening. There were 2 parties ahead so not much of a line or wait. They start by flattening the dough which took 5mins too long for an assembly line operation. You know how your eyes eat before you do? The ingredients on the line didn't look fresh at all! But I chose the house traditional sauce, mozzarella, smoked Gouda, spinach, roasted red peppers, chicken, bacon, tomatoes and topped it off with some pesto sauce. It hit the oven and in about 5mins, was ready for additional seasonings which they have at the end of the line. Once I got home I had to throw it in the oven just to make sure it was "ready-to-eat hot". Even after that, I was disappointed in the dough, which wasn't fully baked. They had to put my boyfriend's back in the oven 2x while we were there but thought mine was done enough. Nope. I put mine in the oven 2 more times at home and still a little doughy in the center. Now, even with all the toppings I got, it lacked flavor all around! I just didn't understand. Likes: The vibrant decor and pizza shop colors! Location is great too with plenty of parking. AND, I don't recall them asking for a tip like other carry-outs but was happy to leave one anyways. The staff was also friendly. Dislike: No flavor ingredients. Food was great. Next time I know I will add more cheese to my pizza because it wasn't cheesy enough for me. The only problem was their selection of drinks. They only had bottled sodas in cream, ginger ale, and blackberry. No regular cola or root beer. Overall good pizza. read more
