First off, this place has won my heart for its commitment to community service and its authenticity! Customer service: done with a smile! I was greeted from the moment I walked up to the counter and felt comfortable giving my order and asking questions. Ambiance: I'm a New Yorker and this place reminded me of some of my favorite spots in Harlem, those mom and pops shop that had the BEST chef in the back making some exclusive dishes. That now leads to my food Food: I ordered the chicken Caesar salad sandwich with an extra side of dressing. Well, here we have it ladies and gentlemen, this place should have been in the running for one of the best sandwiches! Why? They make their OWN bread-all of which was buttery soft! Next, the sliced chicken breast was seasoned in every bite and the Caesar salad was divine! The combination worked perfectly together to create a rich, succulent, and delightful sandwich! Would I be back again? YOU bet your last dollar that I would. And I'm actually going to try a slice of pizza and possibly their banana pudding. Thank you Mama's for the service that you do east of the river. The delicious food that you make and the quality services that you provide. Nobody compares and I'm a huge foodie!

We were looking for a good pie not from our usual (L- o's). So I pulled up on the Ave. Yep just a few minutes from home. Something new, and wonderful. Doesn't look like it from the outside BUT... We called in our order on the way so we arrived way before our pie was ready. 20 minutes was actually 30 for the wait, on a Thursday night. The young lady at the register was pleasant and friendly. She complimented my earrings and was smiling. On the Ave, IYKYK. The PIE?! Omg... the topping were definitely fresh and piled on. The sauce was phenomenal. If you know pizza then you know what I mean. And the deciding factor on why this is my new go to pizza spot is the CRUST! Firm, chewy, crunchy. Done right! We had ordered the medium because we were unsure about the taste/ quality/ etc. I was immediately disappointed because I had to share. I could have EASILY consumed that deliciousness all by my lonesome. There are a lot of tempting things on the menu including wings. We had a small order with blue cheese. They were very good as well. I will definitely be making another trip in the near future for the pie. Pizza is the best part of life and you haven't lived if you cheat yourself out of trying this spot. Oh yeah ... you can buy a slice here too.

Ok now!! I'll start by saying I am NOT a lasagna fan. It either has too much cheese or the sauce is off, etc. BUT my pregnant self woke up thinking "u know what would be great?!?! LASAGNA...from a random place you've never heard of". Lo and behold, this may change the game for me!! This is the first lasagna I truly felt had a nice balance of ingredients and every ingredient was well seasoned/prepared. It was doing what it needed to do!!! Id definitely order again. Unaware that the lasagna came with cheese bread, I ordered garlic bread separately. The bread it comes with is just cheese bread - no seasoning and a bit dry. The garlic cheese bread was tasty - nice blend of cheese and garlic - but too thin so it doesn't stand up to reheating well. That lasagna tho...it's a banger!

My job is fairly close to here and I forgot my lunch so I decided to try out a new restaurant around me. I have been hearing about the pizza however I ordered lasagna and wings. The lasagna comes with cheesy bread, sort of like a mini cheese pizza and the wings come with blue cheese or ranch. Unfortunately I was not impressed by the lasagna as it lacked flavor and meat. It was supposed to be a meat lasagna, but there was minimal protein just a lot of cheese. I will say it was a large portion. The wings also disappointed me as they were very crispy and also just somewhat burnt. I will say, mama herself is a pleasure. And many people in the neighborhood seem to know her and love the pizza. If I go back, I will definitely try the pizza.

Good coffee(hot!) served in European style cup and spoon

It's in a weird location, but food was very good. They are Greek/Italian. So coffee was bit pricey at $4.50, but they gave me refil and comes in cute cup with cute spoon like European style. Mama's Melazana was what we got, and it was excellent.. if you like eggplant, get that. I asked for cooked broccoli instead of salad.. and broccoli was not mushy at all, and came with a half lemon to squeeze on.. a nice touch. Small garlic bread was nice too. Spaghetti that came with, you can tell it's home made..we shared one plate, since husband already ate and was not too hungry. For me, it was perfect for smallish lunch. I would definitely go back. There was a loud family with kids, but you are likely to get that anywhere.. It's nice to see one person can come and eat without a partner and make you feel comfortable too.. as I saw someone doing that.. One caution, service is bit on slow side.. b/c I think they make food to order.. so if ur in a hurry, don't come.

Cooked with love. Point. Blank. Period. The banana pudding! OH EM GEE!! The cookies are at the bottom making it a nice balance between pudding, bananas, and cookies. Just how I like it!!! A million out of a million! Hands down! The pizza was great too! Super doughy and filled with toppings! I love the history of this restaurant, especially since this used to be considered a rough part of the city especially back in the 80s. Even through gentrification, this spot is still standing and it's a loved staple in the community by the original locals who still frequent this place. I can't tell you about parking because I walked with my colleague who is a native and still a local of the area. Gentrification is real and it's apparent; I had to say that because a lot of these residents and even businesses are being driven out due to rising costs of living in the area. It's a beautiful area with so much history and culture; I can feel it. Chocolate City. 10 out of 10.

Mama's is a great little place to grab food from for lunch. It's one of the few restaurants in SE so that alone makes it precious! There's a good variety of menu items from pizzas to pastas. I had ordered the beef lasagna for lunch and made sure to call in my order. It takes about half an hr for the lasagna so you know it's not something that's been sitting underneath a warmer or quickly tossed in the microwave. Lasagna is a pretty decent size for $10 and came with bread which was a nice surprise. You could easily make this into 2 smaller meals if you wanted to. The lasagna was HOT (temperature wise) which is the beat way to eat a meal! Flavor was decent, lots of sauce/cheese and for $10, I was pretty happy with my order. Photo doesn't due this any justice, come try out the lasagna for yourself! Staff was friendly, pick up was easy and prices are good. Overall a good experience, would come again.

It took about 5 mins, but it showed the love in what he creates. I went specifically for the deep dish. It did not disappoint. The cheese pulled was very impressive. The crust was deliscious. Tomato sauce on top. Hmmm hmmm hmmm!!! My friend had the Detroit style. The crust had like a parmesan crust and you could tell the difference between the Chicago and Detroit. I did not see the Nonna, but I did take home a small new York thin. It was good as well, but I will stick with the Chicago or Detroit when I go again.. I will be going again. The strawberry cheese cake..there are no words to describe. I did not talk at all while eating this whole meal. Back to the cheesecake. It comes in a cup, with fresh strawberry on top. That month I had started Uber driving, was in this area of DC, had heard good things about Wiseguy, and decided to eat here. Although I don't like paying to park just to simply eat a meal, I sometimes will make an exception for convenience and/or if it's a place I really want to go. But for the most part, I'll go to restaurant where they have free parking or at least I can find free parking near the restaurant. I remembered getting a parking spot very close and feel like I feed the meter like 50 cents in 2014 parking prices for a quick 30 minute meal. They have all kinds of varieties of slices from the standard toppings or just cheese to fancy ones. Although the pizza is fairly thin, but average for New York style pizza. I tried Andy's Pizza 11 years later in 2025, and while it was solid although not as good as Wiseguy, my real complaint with Andy's was that the pizza is very thin, where I was hungry very soon later; so a much worse value as pricing is comparable to Wiseguy. Wiseguy slices are big, and the pizza is top notch New York style. I went to this location a couple of more times after my initial August 2014 visit as I loved the pizza. Then, they opened up other locations. I went to Navy Yard one at least twice, once after a Nationals baseball game after a disappointing loss for my 4th favorite baseball team, Texas Rangers. Sorry Nats fans, but Nats are in my bottom 10 teams. I also went to Rosslyn & Pentagon City location, where parking isn't quite as bad. They even had a Wheaton Mall food court location, which I got to experience once, but they sadly closed. Every experience with Wiseguy has been positive.
