Been here twice now, once for breakfast burrito and once for lunch. Both times didn't disappoint. The place houses a typical take-out vibe. I went pretty early so there weren't any foot traffic, which always makes for good experiences but I'm curious to see how well they do under pressure. Breakfast was with chorizo, of course. For lunch, I ended up going with BLT and pork burritos, thinking my daughter might like the BLT. Turns out, she likes pork. BLT was alright, only because it's not any of the traditional Mexican flavors, but pork was good. Best of all, I really like their hot salsa. Bigger than it looks from the outside. Kind of fast casual Mexican - you grab your own food from the counter when it's ready. Good variety on the menu. We picked it up to go and even after a half hour in the car, it was delicious! I got the bacon taco and it had a lot of bacon, basically a BLT in a tortilla. It's solid. Not amazing. I take issue anytime any restaurant uses a microwave. Taste is goodish. The service well... I wouldn't go straight to garbage but if you're looking for a warm greeting or even a hi, you're in the wrong place. Based on the Yelp reviews, I was really excited to go to this restaurant with all the positive comments and overall high reviews. It's true that the menu does provide a fairly good selection of different items, the restaurant is clean and nice looking for a fast casual restaurant, and the food presentation is pretty attractive. However, the food portions and quality aren't great for the price, there really isn't any service (despite paying tips), the dining room is a bit cramped and has less than ideal seating, and the food is fairly bland. On my visit here, I tried beef tacos, chicken flautas, carne asada, and a chicken torta. The meat on the tacos, flautas, and torta were juicy but a bit bland. The tacos had a good amount of cheese to them and freshly diced tomatoes, but nothing was memorable about them at all. The torta was basically the same flavor combination with large pieces of sandwich bread, but equally bland. The flautas were very crispy, similar to egg rolls -- but the filling inside had very little flavor. The carne asada was charred nicely, but a bit overcooked and surprisingly bland as well for how charred it looked. Haven't had a bad thing yet!!! The burritos are really good! I swear the taco salads are also good if you're not trying to get all messy at work. Our go to is usually a king burrito with steak or chicken and the red salsa because it's sooo good!! The prices are a little higher than other taco places in the area but it's worth it because you can tell everything is fresh, which we are always willing to pay for. It's an easy place to drive past if you're not from the area, but highly recommend. Burrito Express may not sound like much, but they make some of the best mexican food in the area. It's been recently remodeled on the inside, and has a fresh look to it, so enjoy your meal inside or on their patio in the summer. There are MANY options to chose from on their menu, but my favorite is their torta de milanesa. They always make it fresh in house, and have just the right amount of ingredients. Honestly, I am torn. The guacamole was excellent. I really liked the pork belly taco, nice big slice with a sweet sauce. They flavors we surprising and enjoyable. But my husband's King burrito fell apart and the steak tostada was ok. I would probably want to try more menu items. I also felt awkward on the debit machine asking for a tip, which I did, but they did not have waiters or serve us our food. You have to try the corn shrimp tacos. They are heaven!. The exact opposite are the chicken tacos. Tasteless and look like canned shredded chicken dumped in a taco. A month or so ago I ordered food for my family and when I picked it up and got home my wife's taco salad and chips and guac were missing. I called them and the guy said he can see that my food was in a bag in front of him but he can't issue me a refund. What?! You can't give me my money back? He said he'll leave a note so next time I come in I'll get my food. I said it could be months before I come back but he promised he'll honor it. We have been craving a legit breakfast burrito like the ones we have become accustomed to in Southern California and I am so happy to say that we have found it! I did give them a little guidance to what we like inside...nice and simple, eggs, potatoes, beans and cheese. They nailed it - delicious; tasted like "home." Went in twice in the first week they were open. Pretty dang good. They have almost all the standards plus can do some "artsy" dishes well (I'm thinking of their pork belly tacos here). They were slammed when I was in so the order took a little long to come out but the wait wasn't that bad for lunch hour. The dining room is not terribly comfortable when the place is busy but that means I will rely on it as more of a takeout option which is fine. The only food-criticism I have is that their tortilla chips are way too thin and break even under the weight of salsa. The tacos and burrito that I have had were all very tasty. I will definitely be back. I want to add that the staff is great. Very friendly and helpful. That means a lot to me. As of right now it's not in my top tier of local Mexican joints (Alamo in Wheeling, Rey de Oro in Libertyville, Jalisco in Gurnee, if you're wondering) but if they improve their tortilla chip and as they settle into a groove there's no reason it can't be. Its location will make it a great takeout option for lots of people who work and live nearby. A fitting evolution for the space that used to House a great El Famous Burrito back in the day. The space used to house another burrito establishment which closed a while back. It has been renovated and offers a clean and well lit environment. Basic quick counter service with tables for chowing or get it to go. No alcohol is served so I gots mine to go so I could get my drink on with the burritos, tacos and chips and quac. The process of ordering and making the food went smoothly. The food was good but pretty plain. Not much flavor to any of the dishes we tried. Not a terrible place, but after two visits over a long span of time, we concluded that this place is just not worth it. It is too expensive to be a cheapie Mexican joint (like its predecessor in the same spot El Famous Burrito), and not food quality enough to compete with other places with similar prices (Uncle Julio's). The food is quite greasy, and they upcharge for things that are listed on the menu. Usually I would argue, but I was with my hungry family and did not want to make a scene over an upcharge for a different meat on my tacos. This place has lots of potential, and I sincerely hope they succeed! It was good but not good enough for me come back. I came here because another Yelp Elite left a 5 star review stating that if you are coming from California, the is very similar. We been to quite a few Mexican restaurants around Lake County and Chicago...I was hoping that this place would live up to standards but left a little disappointed. Food truck burrito's inside the Navy base San Diego taste way better than this place. The Vernon Hills Burrito looked gigantic but after first, second, and third bite...I tasted more beans and rice than steak. The steak chopped up into tiny pieces and was good but the meat portion was equal to what you would get at Taco Bell....speaking of Taco Bell...this place is very similar just more expensive. Lastly, this maybe TMI but very shortly after leaving this, I had the bubble guts! Coincidence? Maybe...maybe not. This place is nothing like Southern California/Baja California Mexican food. If you are looking for a great place for a quick Mexican lunch this is it. I come here often when I get the urge to have a taco, sope, or even a tostada. Although it is not authentic Mexican cuisine, as most tacos have cheese, lettuce, and tomato, this is still a great place to have a bite to eat. The Yelp reviews for Burrito Express seemed to indicate that this would be a pretty good lunch spot and the line of customers waiting to order seemed to confirm that. Unfortunately, I came away disappointed by the experience. The interior is nice enough, if a bit cold. It's better than what you'd expect from a strip mall Mexican restaurant, but not memorable in any way. It simply is. The only thing of note was that there were no paper menus or books, just a large mural of one on the wall near the entrance. It wasn't very descriptive, but then again, how many different ways can you really prepare a burrito de asada? I ordered my super king burrito and waited less than 10 minutes for it to be ready, despite the lunch time rush. At least the "Express" part in Burrito Express is accurate! The burrito itself was.. ok. It wasn't bad or anything, but at $11.50, it was probably the most expensive burrito I've ever ordered and with the higher price tag come certain expectations. The meat was a bit bland, there was too much lettuce and not enough cheese and the salsa verde wasn't much better. A good salsa can make a bland burrito a bit better, but this one was about as bland as the burrito as well. So bland + bland = meh. I don't know, I suppose it was wrong for me to expect to be blown away by a strip mall burrito, but at $11.50 a pop, you're not really getting your money's worth here.
