I really loved the pizza. It was my first time having a deep dish pizza but it was the perfect choice. Dough was perfectly crusty, with what I then learned were burned cheese sides (apparently that's a thing with deep dish?), not too thick, VERY fresh ingredients and A LOT of them. Also really sizable outdoor space, and great services. I would say the place has a family like feel. If I'm in the area again I will definitely come back. read more

I made sure to stop by a couple of times before writing a review to confirm that the service is excellent, and the pizza is prepared well. I used to tell everyone that Pequod's was the best pizza on the North side, but Burt's definitely has them beat! Reopened! Yay! The place is all cleaned up- some of the old knickknacks from when Burt was the owner- but in a much less cluttered environment. They seem to be getting their bearings, but are friendly and enthusiastic- and they seem a lot more willing to accommodate (versus Burt's strict oven schedule). The pizza was solid; It reminds me a little more of Lou Malnati's than the old Burt's but it is filling and delicious. Opened again, thank you Jesus! I went back and I have to say the pizza tastes just like it did when Burt was running the show. I ordered an extra large with sausage, bell peppers, onions, and mushrooms. The produce is fresh as can be and the sausage is packed with authentic Italian flavor. But one of the big keys to me with making a good pizza is how well the ingredients are proportioned. With deep dish, and especially stuffed pizza, there is frequently too much crust. Sometimes the cheese takes over or the toppings are too assertive. But Burt's balances the pizza components to a science. And their crust is just lighter than a typical deep dish, so you can eat more of it and not feel like you ate a bowling ball. George ran the front of the house and he was incredibly personable. He recommended the house salad and it was pretty good. Personally, with green olives already in the salad, I'd have swapped out the black olives for cucumbers, but you can't have everything I guess. And major thumbs up for having Brickstone APA on draft. Even though Burt's is an hour drive for me I'll still come back a few times a year. read more

I wanted to write a review since some jerk took a picture of the pizza in the trash. First ok maybe you didn't like it that's fine. It's called personal taste, but it doesn't mean your taste is the same as the millions of people in the world. Have some class and don't waste food (people are starving) and try to harm a small business! They are doing their best and for most that brings out the best deep dish in the area but for you, you didn't like it, oh well! move on. Deep dish isn't my favorite either but this pizza converted me and I love it. It's the best deep dish, the nicest people working here, and a great little family restaurant. Id recommend sausage and mushroom, but the pep is solid too and the spinach and green peppers for the veg in your life. Just not how I remember Burt's when Burt was there. Sure was able to call at 6 p.m. on Saturday for a 6:30 p.m. seating with a pre-ordered pizza, but the bottom crust was done, but barely any browning or caramelization, thus making for a bland taste on the crust itself. The cheese crust is just at the top at the edge. I also found that base was very bready. Maybe I remember wrong, but I was thinking about a thinner pie, caramelized crust. It also wound up being soggier and I don't think it was because of our topping choice (we order half mushroom/sausage and half spinach/sliced tomatoes on our pies all the time). Only this time when we phoned ahead, they put our half mushroom/sausage and half spinach/tomatoes both on the same side leaving the other side with no toppings. Not sure why that would ever happen. They had my phone number if the pizzamaker wanted to double check. Even minus the topping mishap, walking away with a $30 (XL 16") pie including tip, I'd say I get a better pie from either of our two Rogers Park solids. read more

Mostly burnt up tomato sauce, topped with anything and everything you can imagine to put on and called it "pizza" Burt The original owner was an original himself. Full disclosure, I am removing one star to reflect my sadness over the loss of a Chicago institution. This is my third review of Burt's Place. To my taste (honed by 30 years of eating the pizza prepared by Burt Katz), the pizza at Burt's Place is not the pizza that Burt Katz would have prepared. That said, it is still a good pizza. I've seen it written here that Burt's Place has become a local watering-hole, with good pizza. I think that is a good description. Obviously, all of Burt's quirky service and atmosphere are gone. But, that aside, the pizza just does not taste the same (I've tried it three times now). There is a slight hint of the old pizza in the sauce, and it's served in the same seasoned pans, but that's about where the comparison ends. If you live in the area, want to have a beer, or sit with your friends and have some wine, and decide to have a pizza while you're there, you'll enjoy yourself. But for me, I used to travel as far as forty miles to eat pizza made by Burt. I no longer feel compelled to do so. If you've come to eat the pizza that Anthony Bourdain ate, it is no longer available. read more

Is it the best pizza ever? That's a tough one to answer, with all the varieties of 'za around, but I am going to say it is in the top 3 for me, and I am a staunch New York style girl. It is that great. We had pre-ordered a pepperoni, green pepper and garlic pizza and a salad. Although the salad was very, very fresh and good, I was almost sad we had gotten that, because I filled up on it and then had room for only one slice! And once I saw how lovely this pizza was, one slice just did not last long enough in the mouth. A crispy, perfectly dark brown & caramelized buttery crust was perfectly balanced - not too thick, not too thin. The sauce was tangy, chunky and rich, the cheese browned ever so slightly and melty. Insane how good this was. I spent the better part of the evening in amazement that I have finally gotten a great pizza in the Midwest and how it even blew a few former East Coast faves off the map. As a fellow Yelper described Burt's Place, its like coming to someones house for dinner. You want to call ahead to let them know you are coming, you want to be courteous and friendly, and you will get the same back from them. We had excellent, almost mom-like service from Mrs. Burt, who beamed whenever we complimented the food. The interior reminded me of someones rec room: tiny, dark, and loaded with memorabilia and collections of phones and ham radios. The IHOP dinnerware food was served on was a kooky, amusing touch. These folks have been in this business for over 30 years and holy crap do they know what they are doing. If you are up this area, you definitely want to sample this type of pizza (known as a Starback style). You can eat in as well as take out. Cash only! read more

Very good, though for me the Chicago pan/deep dish is often a little bread-y, and this wasn't an exception though it was less bread-y than popular competitor Pequods, which I liked. Cheese was very tasty as were the pepperoni and sausage we got on top. Best part for my was the charred caramelization the pizza's exterior, which provided a roasty, crispy, complex addition that definitely bumped this pizza up a notch in my opinion. The sauce was good, though I feel that I've had a more flavorful sauce at Pequod's. Overall, I feel Burt's hold it's own again some of the other big names in Chicago pan/deep dish and would consider choosing it over some of the others depending on what mood I'm in. read more

The Good--------------------------------------- I enjoyed arriving to our pizza's ready to eat. We called ahead and made a reservation, and when we got there our pizza was ready. I hate being at a pizza joint hungry, when you have to smell everyones pizza, and you are about to whore yourself out for a slice, all because your pie takes 35 minutes. The sausage on the sausage pizza was quite possibly the best pizza sausage i have ever had. And there was plenty of it as well (not one or two little pieces per slice). The Bad------------------------------------------ They placed our pizza on a table in the middle of the room and served us from there. The first slice was great, but then trying to get Sharon or the other server to get us a slice was infuriating. They were too busy, so we finally got up and got our own slices (to slightly dirty looks). Unfortunately, we waited so long our pizza went cold. Not cold like day old cold pizza in the fridge which somehow is acceptable to eat, but room temperature stale crust pizza. The pizza went from a 4 star pizza to a 2 star faccacio. Drink refills were equally difficult to get.... The Ugly----------------------------------------------------------- I appreciate character and quirk, but this place is a dump. And if you don't get a booth, be prepared to sit on uncomfortable, rickety, flimsy chairs. Summary: I drove up from the city for the experience. I enjoyed it, but i wouldn't do it again. Why are reviewers rating this pizza versus Lou's?! Two different styles of pizza and this one isn't soggy guys. I've tried on numerous occasions to try this place and for over a decade. I drove past it a bunch of times whilst trying to make it to a class nearby only to find it always closed or always too busy. As everyone else has already said, you have to phone first whether you carry out or dine in and typically it's five hours in advance. So I recently held my 2nd annual bring your own pizza event. A pizza party where everyone brings a pie from a different pizza vendor and all share because we have a mutual love for pizza. My cousin put in the work and time to get a pie from Burt's. While it was clearly a winner with all and the very best vegetarian pizza we dined on, it didn't meet the hype I've always heard. Since Burt was behind Pequod's beginning; I don't feel bad saying that I prefer Pequod's over Burt's. It's a difference of having sauce versus less sauce and more dough. Now that this is checked off my bookmarked list, I am looking forward to having a lunch special at Pequod's really soon. read more

This place is by far..THE best pizza that I have had in my life. The list of accolades that Burt has received goes on for pages, but the most noteworthy of them all are the ones that he received from Anthony Bourdain and Savour magazine. Despite his recent fame, Burt has been humble to his roots....he takes no interest in the fame and money and simple wishes to bring the best pizza to all of the customers that he bakes pizza for. Most of the ingredients that Burt prepares (with the exception of the sauce) is made from scratch. He gets up at 5ish in the morning, heads over to his secret markets and buys all the ingredients that he needs for that day. If more people order than what he has for pizza...well too bad...you're not getting pizza that day (this has happened to me numerous times) and when they decide that your pizza cannot be prepared by the time they close, they will simply put the phone off the hook and not answer the phone (kinda weird but what am I to say). To avoid most of these issues of the delay and the pizza selling out, I strongly suggest you call in at 4-5PM a day earlier. On really bad days I had to redial for 1hr straight to get someone on the phone to take the order...that's how bad it can get....so heed my advice. Do not be deceived by the lack of customers sitting at the tables in the restaurant (usually empty) as most of their business is generated from takeouts (I swear someone comes in every 5-10 min during the peak times). To make a long story short on what to order..and to not be redundant, let me give you some advice from an expert that has been eating at Burt's for years (and went through numerous trial and errors to find out what works well and what doesn't). I bet everyone who complains about Burt's not being the best did not follow the rules that I have listed below (everyone who i took the burt's felt that it was the best pizza they ever had so go figure). First of all, I strongly suggest you do not order anything larger than a LARGE pizza. The reason is that the XL and the XXL pizza are very hard to bake..and I noticed that you cannot get the crust to become as crispy as the large and the mediums (so it's better to order 2 larges or 2-3 mediums). Second, ask him bake a well done pizza (this is key to make it crisp) even if it takes longer. Third, ALWAYS put garlic in the pizza (this will really make or break the pizza) and do not skimp on ingredients (I put at least 4-5 things like onion, garlic, sausage, spinach, green pepper/ tomato). If you go more than 5-6, the pizza gets too watery and you'll goof it up (and burt does not recommend it either). Follow these rules...and you'll feel like you're in heaven. Simply put this is the best pizza that I've had in my life and one of the few things I felt that I would like to have before I die. read more

I have to agree with the late Anthony Bourdain & state that this is the only deep dish in Chicago that I'll eat. I opted to sit at the outside bar/patio on this particularly chilly evening but I was comfortable because there were heat lamps. The staff were welcoming & unbeknownst to me my server was actually one of the owners who also gave me suggestions as this was my first time. The cheese curds had a seasoning to them that made them trump any other curd I've ever had. The pizza, although a small it really seemed like a medium, was tasty. There was no soupy mound of mess like found at Giordano's or Uno's. No component of the pizza overpowered the other & the ingredients complimented each other quite well. I must say that although the restaurant wasn't extremely busy that I was surprised the food came out so quickly. There's plenty of street parking right in front but I imagine during peak hours it could be a daunting task to find parking. While I'm not yet ready to label this the best pie in Chicago I'd agree with other reviewers & say this is the best pizza on the EXTREMELY north side. read more

Fantastic! I called in our order last night, and I placed it with Burt directly! I was advised that my onion rings would be on the table at 5:15, and my pizza would be ready and served at 5:30. We arrived early and were greeted by Burt and our server. They were both warm and friendly during our entire visit! They were kind to the kids and eager to know how we found out about Burts. The pizza was amazing! We order two mediums so that we could try a variety of toppings. The sausage was my favorite, by far. The crust was buttery and crisp....what a perfect execution. The restaurant is really something....It looks like someone's basement with all types of old fashioned phones, pictures, a vintage mini car...lots of good stuff. Check it out! Ok, so you've just watched Check Please and you are thinking, damn, I need to try this place. Yes, yes, you do. How? First, it is CASH ONLY. Second, it is in Morton Grove, so plan for a drive. But there is plenty of parking nearby, including 3 spots right out the front door. Free Parking, that is. Call AHEAD. They are not kidding. Take a look at the menu and place your ENTIRE order IN ADVANCE. Small kitchen, one chef, one server/hostess requires this. Plus you can enjoy the drive knowing your pizza is already in the oven. Show up a few minutes early - when they say your pie is out at 12:30, they mean 12:30. Try the salads - they are incredibly fresh and made from ingredients purchased THAT DAY. Garlic bread is made with real garlic - very good. Have not tried the poppers, but they looked amazing. Pizza? I humbly suggest you order a large to safely feed 4 (2 large pieces per person). We tried the Spinach, Sausage, and Pepperoni. Next time we'll absolutely order garlic on the pie, but we'll wait until you've all had your turn. Burt and his wife are half of the experience. They believe in what they do and do it they way they want to. Fortunately, that leaves you with a fantastic dining experience, especially if you are a pizza lover. Having seen Burt's Place on the Travel Channel, from an episode from back when Burt was around and being from Niles, I knew this was a must when I came back into town for a visit. We stopped in later on a Sunday evening with about 7 of us. It took a while to get acknowledged and it was clear they got slammed unexpectedly so wait times were a little long. You can tell that this is a family place with kids running around helping their parents out. The service was great. It was a bummer that they only served a small amount of beer and wine. I'll tell you this, I love pizza and I love this place. No offense Burt's and family, Lou Malnatis's is my number 1 and will always be my number 1.. but you guys blew away my number 2-50, and Burt's is my number 2. My wife and I experience here has been amazing.. anywhere from customer service, atmosphere, and the food. We were greeted promptly and with a smile. Host and outdoor patio server, Joe, has made our time here enjoyable. I overheard his conversation with another table, and he knew his beer list. He also pointed out the owner of the place, and spoke a bit about the history of this place. He was always near and attentive, walking in & out of the patio area, yet he gave us enough space and time to eat before asking how we are and how the food is. That right there is a great server in my book. The patio area was nice, clean, and somewhat secluded. Bar area was nice and clean, and there a tv to watch the Cubbies play. Nice touch to the bar. Only suggestion I would have is maybe have some citronella candles to ward off any flies or mosquitoes, but other than that, it was beautiful tonight on this non-typical Chicago day without humidity. We ordered the jalapeño poppers for apps. It was alright. It was cooked good throughout, but typical. We weren't there for that. We ordered a medium pie with giardiniera and sausage (by the way, it was more than enough for two people). I think we would have been better off with a small, but now I have pizza for days and my wife says it's all for me. YES!!! Daniel Bryan style. The crust was tasty and with each bite, it slightly crumbled in my mouth. The burnt cheesy crust is oh so good with ranch dipping sauce. Burt's Place will always be a go-to for quality and tasty Chicago style deep dish pizza when I'm willing to venture to Morton Grove to indulge. For those Chicagoans like me who don't have a car, it can be a bit taxing to find a way to get out to Suburbia, especially given the strict restrictions that are put in place by Burt's when you want to eat there. As many Yelpers have pointed out, you MUST make a reservation at least a few days in advance where you place your order in its entirety. I know some people are "put off" by this fact, but Burt's is a true mom and pop business, so they need to know this in order to prepare. Please ignore all of the other reviews saying this is the "soup nazi" of pizza places. As long as you know to make a reservation, you'll be fine--they have their pizza prep/baking/serving down to a science. Anyhow, I made a reservation for a Sunday night at 7pm for a party of four about a week in advance and put in an order for an extra large pepperoni pizza with peppers and onions and opted out of any of the appetizers and salads. We arrived about 10-15 minutes before our reservation at 7pm (as we were instructed) and they had our table set up for us upon arrival. We were lucky enough to sit at the "Anthony Bourdain" table, which I was pretty excited about as I'm a huge fan. (A side note to my credibility, I went to this restaurant BEFORE hearing that Anthony Bourdain had visited and enjoyed it just as much.) We put in a drink order, choosing from their wide selection of Great Lakes beers. The beers came out promptly and we were sipping on them until our pizza arrived at our table just a minute or two past 7pm. I love Burt's pizza above most other Chicago style offerings of pizza because the pizza is light even though it's "deep dish" and doesn't sit like a rock in your stomach. The ingredients are always fresh, and their red sauce is lightly spiced and incredibly flavorful. The pizza is obviously made to order, so you never have that hard/stringy old cheese atop a soggy crust. Speaking of the crust, it's slightly caramelized which gives the pizza crust a light crunch around the edges and adds a unique, albeit subtle, taste to crust. It's similar to Pequods, but much better in my opinion. The service is very prompt and friendly, and they're always trying to put another piece on your plate. The atmosphere is incredibly divey, but homey, and Burt and Sharon will hang out in the dining room between orders. I love how they're still such an integral part of the business and have been there every time I've visited the restaurant. I only eat Chicago style pizza a few times a year, but when I'm in the mood (and have access to a car) Burt's will always be my go-to. A solid 4.5-ish: I was really excited to try this place out - I was in town for a few days and decided to call in for a carry-out for a couple of days later - the lady who took my order was nice, straight forward, and quite no-nonsense. I got a large pan with sausage, onion, garlic, extra sauce, and extra cheese, well-done. I actually arrived the day of about 30 minutes earlier; the place looks like an old western saloon from the outside, but inside, it was filled with all these trinkets such as old telephones, toys, toy cars, radios, etc. I saw the table where Anthony Bourdain sat with a gold plaque on the wall (love him), and I saw Mister Burt himself with his awesome white beard - he was also a no-nonsense type of a guy and very particular in the way he makes his pizza - a group of 14 people came in who ordered pizza ahead of time, but wanted to add some other things (they were not happy) - there seems to be a strict system, and it seems as if Burt wants everything to be on time, precise, and hot and fresh. I am sure the pizza would have been wonderful if we ate it right away, but even after about 10 minutes in getting it home, it still tasted great. I actually expected it to be deep dish, but either way, it was literally the best 'pan pizza' I've had - everything was nicely flavored, chunks of sausage all throughout, loved the garlic pieces and onion slices, and I loved the crispy edges. I didn't really get the 'caramelized crust,' and I'm not much of a crust person, so I was pretty happy that Burt uses all of the surface area with the sauce and the toppings - it was nice and cheesy, and I can see myself ordering from this place time and time again. This was my last stop on the Chicago Deep Dish Tour that I set out on at the beginning of the year. I started at the bottom and climbed my way up. All in all, I've decided deep dish must just not be for me. I always felt first and foremost there was far too much cheese and not enough sauce. This premise may seem a little random but it perfectly frames my experience here. First, for all those not familiar: Make sure you call and make a reservation, also have your order ready. It may seem odd but I liked being able to roll in, give my name and have everything aside from drinks in order. We got the app sampler, which was a nice holdover while waiting for the pizza to come out. Then we shared a large pie with sausage, bell peppers, and onion. The pizza, overall, was better in some respects but in other ways not. I did enjoy the fact that there weren't literal pounds of cheese gooping up each slice. However the general seasoning was a little underwhelming, I think this was in due part to the lack of sauce. What did help was the well seasoned bits of sausage. Burt's Place - Pizza Near Me - Morton Grove, Illinois

Family style, Morton Grove local. This pizza place has a unique taste of what MG is and has a lovely crowd. Pizza is very good.

It took more than a year for the timing to work out, but last night we finally had Burt's! As others have noted, you want to call ahead, not so much to order, but to see if you can order. This is as they say a "Mom & Pop" joint and so when they have enough orders, they have enough. But that said, its worth the wait. If you're looking for 5lbs of melted cheese and sauce and some wet sausage, then go to Gino's East. But if you're looking for the better side of deep dish, this is one of the best. Just the right amount of cheese, toppings and crust thickness (think focaccia) As people have described, the dining area is a bit homey, if that's a detractor to you, then just get your order to go.
