Honestly Caitlin is hands down THE best hairstylist on this side of the Mississippi (can't speak for the other side though, I haven't been) My hair is very weak and frail purely due to genetics but Caitlin has been able to take me to every color of the rainbow without causing any noticeable damage. We've been pink, purple, green, orange, blue, silver, everything, and it's all looked SO good! She is truly an expert of her craft, an excellent conversationalist, and just an all around ideal stylist. I would follow her through the gates of hell with no questions asked if it meant I got to keep her as a stylist. Caitlin truly is a beautiful gem in this godforsaken city. read more

Tamara has consistently made my experience amazing. She continually teaches me new things about my hair I didn't know. It is more than a salon visit. It's an investment in the health of my hair! I am never disappointed when I leave, only that the pampering is over, but the joy I get in all the compliments out in public make the salon pampering last just a tad bit longer. GO SEE TAMARA! I love this place. It's airy, comfortable, with lots of light and big windows. Even when it's crowded the salon is a welcoming place. Alex Wenzel is a talented and caring haircutter. She starts every session with an awesome head massage and consultation so that you have input into whether or not to tweak the cut, go with something different, or share any problems you may have had maintaining the style since your last visit. I know that Alex is only one of many terrific stylists who work out of the salon. I know several folks with curly hair who also go here. My hair is straight as a rod and I view this place as my forever hair salon. Alex always makes my next appointment and then sends me an iMessage the day before so I never forget. Her rates are reasonable given the fact that she spends a complete hour with you and becomes a friend, personal consultant as well as hairstylist. The studio space is tucked up a flight of stairs on MLK, close to excellent coffee and lunch if you need something to do before or after your haircut. read more

I have been searching for a good stylist in Portland for ages. I have gone to a zillionty salons and haven't really clicked with any of them. I have become so reluctant to get my hair cut, that by the time I try again, I come in with a mass of crazy, frizzy ... uh. Dense. Hair. And I'm like, please, for the love of god, fix this. The last time I did that, the only hair stylist I trust, who sadly lives in Los Angeles asked me if I cut my hair myself. Anyway, with trepidation in my heart I set an appointment with Libby and crossed my fingers. I wasn't disappointed. Libby shaped and thinned the crazy bulky forest of hair into a beautiful and complementary haircut, all while being super pleasant! Another thing I liked about this place is that Libby gave me samples of hair products rather than just saying, well this $100 conditioner will be perfect for your hair type. I'm down for buying hair products, but it is tiring to get the sales pitch and then have it not work out for you after spending a ton on fancy shampoo. I've gotten haircuts in the past that I was unhappy with because they were difficult to style, or the stylist didn't recognize certain features about my hair or hairline or how I like to do my hair on a regular basis. Allyson got ALL of this right! Even 3-4 weeks after my haircut it's growing out well, and still able to easily style. I've gotten more compliments than I've ever gotten before about my hair since she's been cutting my hair. For as long as I live in Portland I'll be going to Allyson for my hair. Greatest experience of my life. Misa is the greatest there ever was. If you have had terrible salon experiences (odds are you have) - she feels your pain, knows first hand what it's like dealing with a horrible color correction, or earful hair cut. She restores the faith and is warm, charming, smart, and reassuring. My hair was ragged, effed up ugly hair cut. And Misa said (among many other things) "you'll be amazed at what a good haircut can do" love my cut and she toned my hair to dreamy brown perfection from it's weird orange fluff state. My year long experience with Arabella had been wonderful for nearly one year. A nice, light, open and clean environment and the staff couldn't have been more welcoming. My stylist was excellent especially cutting hair. And he listened to me and made suggestions which were phenomenal especially where color was concerned. We had a wonderful rapport. And I found Arabella's prices were worth every dollar. Here is the downside: a lack of communication not only from the staff (if I had had my stylist's phone number none of this would have occurred for which I could kick myself). During the time Multnomah closed businesses, I would phone Arabella (2x month) and leave a message just to see if they might know when their salon might open; that maybe they had inside info. Their answering machine message indicated that only one person comes to the salon each week to check phone messages and water the plants. Except no one ever returned my calls. This became an issue for me as the re-openings began to occur in and around the same area as the salon. A good friend told me her salon had kept in touch with her as the restrictions in Multnomah lifted and that they used an excellent marketing ploy to retain her business. Sadly, I would have thought Arabella would have wanted my business enough to have returned my phone calls or at least have my stylist contact me. Any attempts to find out if he was returning were answered vaguely. Every single time I phoned. One week ago, after months of vagueness, the stylist texted me to tell me he wasn't returning. And he was kind enough to give me referrals. Okay, now I know. Aside from all that I have shared here, Arabella is top of the line and I like them very much. It's just that all of the above left me perplexed. read more

Kimberly is the GREATEST massage therapist in Portland. She does Thai massage and I will argue that you have never had a massage (with acupuncture or without) that rivals what this etherial power-house can do. Honestly - come back here and tell me if I'm wrong - this woman is not from earth - she's some sort of Angel. She also does acupuncture and accepts auto-insurance if you have been in a car accident. You can make an appointment at 503-309-7267 FYI - Arabella looks ominous from the street but when you walk upstairs you are reminded how cool Portland is. I went to Arabella for the first time recently after reading the reviews on Yelp. Like so many others, I have been searching for a stylist to finally 'settle down' with, and have been disappointed so many times over the years. Needless to say, I was more than a bit nervous to try yet someone else new, but my first experience at Arabella was fantastic, and I will most definitely be returning! Had a cut/color from Piper, and loved her, love the cut and the color! She is a genuinely nice person who comes across as sincere and down-to-earth - so important! Nothing pretentious about her or the salon. It's obvious Piper knows what she's doing - not only did she really listen to my concerns and fears about what's been done to my hair in the past, but she gave her recommendation for what type of cut would work with my facial/bone structure. I let her work her magic and I can honestly say I think I've found 'the one!' Also, loved the complimentary hand massage while my color was setting - such a nice little bonus and way to make the salon stand out from the others. I'm 30. I've never once in those years, ONCE had a regular stylist. I'm one of those, jump from salon to salon in search of the (previously thought) non-existent stylist who would just do exactly what I wanted. And I never really blamed the stylists who couldn't read my mind - because let's face it, I don't have the hair-vocabulary to convey my vision. I would show pictures, and they would fail. Then I would move on to the next trendy/highly praised location. Until, *ray of sun beams down on me at this moment* I found Marci at Arabella. I've gone to Marci for about a year now - and she has not let me down. I've changed styles, from my usual (and so I've been told, pretty difficult cut) A-line / one layered bob (she taught me that lingo, athankyou), to shaving one side of my head, to a 60s style bob - and each style, she's mastered. Even doing better than I thought. I can't stress this enough: I AM ONE OF THOSE OBNOXIOUS PEOPLE WHO IS NEVER HAPPY WITH THEIR CUT. Not anymore. I'm not sure what Ritu K. is talking about also - I have super thin hair and the razor doesn't give me frizzy ends. Further - and no offense - but I sorta doubt that the hair was uneven (Marci is a perfectionist). As for the salon, it's cool. Vintage vanities for the stylists to work in front of. All the ladies are really nice. Clean, brick interior, quality products, nothing crazy special, but Marci makes it a perfect five for me! read more

Not only is she talented and professional, she takes the time to truly listen to what her clients want and always delivers fantastic results. Her hilarious and kind personality that makes salon appointments super fun is the icing on this stylish cake. If Arabella salon was a cake, it would be red velvet with cream cheese frosting. The salon itself is a beautiful and calming space and the staff are dedicated to environmentally friendly and sustainable practices. So Portland, I love it! Haircuts are $45!! 've been a long time customer of Libby's and I love her new spot in Portland! Arabella has a great soothing and classy yet non-pretentious atmosphere. There is a beautiful rooftop garden. The salon was easyto find with ample parking. Why do I love Libby? -I always love my hair. -Shes really great at understanding what I want even if i have a hard time explaining it. -She takes time to straighten and style my hair perfectly before I leave. -She gives amazing scalp massages. -She has an extensive knowledge of the Davines product line (which btw is amazing!) -She is very pleasant and easy to talk to. I really tried to avoid writing this review as I hate mucking a bunch of 5 star reviews but my haircut was no bueno. Marci was awesome. Very friendly, totally listened to my hair gripes and tried to work with my texture, really I loved her. The problem lay with my cut. She used a razor which gives me a ton of frizzy ends. Even with all the right styling products the razored ends frizz out with my thin hair. That's really not a big deal, the deal breaker for me was that my cut was uneven. The left side is longer than the right and its pretty obvious. I've waited months to write this review in the hopes I was hallucinating the whole thing, but sadly no, the cut is very uneven and very obviously uneven. After taking a brief hiatus from Portland, I needed to rediscover a good salon to get my hair cut at. I used to go to Dosha which was good, but the turnover is so high you never get the same stylist and its pricey. My friends recommended Salon In Vogue since it was inexpensive, but half the time they complain about their haircuts. I'm so lazy that I only get my hair did once or twice a year (yea I'm terrible), so it better be good if I'm gonna sit there for two hours. I went to Arabella based off of its Yelp reviews and I'm really happy I did. I had Piper who gave me gorgeous highlights and an awesome cut. She's great about advising what will and won't work with your hair and she was easy to talk to. I asked for some cards so I could refer her to my friends. I asked around quite a bit before making my first Portland haircut appointment. Dosha and several others in SE were recommended, but I chose Libby at Arabella Salon for two reasons - the salon is really close to my apartment and Libby has an online appointment reservation system. Priorities, yunno. I'm so glad I chose Libby. I've only been once but she was very patient with my dry, frizzy, self-dyed hair. She suggested an inverted bob and the Davines moisturizing product line. "Suggested" is the key word - I've had pushy stylists before, but Libby listened to my needs and talked me through my options. The following week I took a photo with some friends and posted it to Facebook, and got a ridiculous number of complements on how good my hair looked. That alone means I am now a big Libby fan. The product line wasn't even that expensive for something from a small, environmentally conscious company. It's definitely working some moisturizing magic and I've used less than a quarter of the bottle over the past month, so it's going to last me quite a while. Arabella is a great space. I love the open loft feel with the variety of antique dressers as the stylists' stations. I followed Marci from her previous salons and by far I like Arabella the best; it suites her well and when she moved here she was so happy and excited for the future. You can find my previous reviews of her work (National Beauty and Ginger on Fremont). I also referred my best friend to Marci, who approved of Marci's work (my friend is very particular about her hair). I moved out of state and have a new stylist but Marci has something extra I can't explain that my new person just doesn't have. In simple terms I miss Marci. Her skill level is tremendous. I'd been living in Portland 5 months and dragging my feet about finding a new salon/stylist; meanwhile, my curly, fine hair had become a dry, frizzy, disaster...I was long overdue for some professional pampering. Stephanie June at Arabella is an eyebrow goddess!!!! I didn't know having a great eyebrow wax could make such a difference. I mean i've had my brows waxed before and all... but never like this. she takes so much time perfecting your brows and making them totally perfect for your face shape. she is passionate about makeup and has actually worked on a lot of cool stuff, twilight and leverage. she give a great facial too!! the salon is beautiful and her room is so relaxing. i can't wait to see her again soon!! read more

Wow! Crazy happy with my new stylist and my hair :-) Piper is simply amazing. I've seen her twice since moving here from Boulder, Colorado (where I'd had a longtime stylist whom I loved) at the end of summer. She's talented, friendly, and takes the time to really be sure that she understands what look I'm going for. I have fairly average shoulder length hair, which I'm told is rather fine but plentiful, so its cut/style is very important to me. She gets it and does it very well. Cool salon, great space, fun people and good music. Libby cuts my hair and the first time I went for a "consult" she (correctly) identified my overworked and unhealthy straight, fine hair. She prescribed a deep treatment using the Davines products that made my hair feel like silk for several days. Then, I was able to go back for the full deal - cut and fixing of the color and cut. The first place I went into after my cut commented on my cut, and the 2nd place said, "Is that your natural color, it's so beautiful." . That's about as good as it gets given that she did put in some low-lights that I'd never done before and was a bit nervous about. So far I really like the Davines product line too - hadn't ever used it before but my hair is super soft. She's also very helpful instructing those of us who don't really have any real talent for styling our own hair....I can't wait to go back for more. read more

I just saw Piper today for the first time. She was absolutely wonderful. I'm one of those people who doesn't really know what to ask for in a haircut yet gets really particular when it doesn't work out right. Piper looked at what my hair does naturally, made suggestions that worked with but improved my previous cut, and taught me a few tricks to help me style it best. My confidence in Piper was also encouraged when she was able to answer questions that other hairstylists were not able to explain to me and when she noticed that the previous stylist had cut my hair unevenly. It's comforting to know that she's both informed and attentive to detail. I think my search for a Portland stylist is complete. read more

I found this fantastic salon through a co worker. I have loved it from the first day I came in. They have been extremely kind to me. They have cut my curly hair in a way that I can grow it and it can be tamed and attractive. A lot of stylists used to cut off my hair since they did not want to deal with curls because they did not know how to work with it. First I had a hair dresser Kirsten Landsverk and she was so great. After a few years she had to depart and she was so careful and thoughtful about the next stylist she gave me to. She gave me to Misa West who has been just as perfect as Kirsten. They really care about you here. I actually look forward to catching up with Misa as much as I look forward to getting my hair done. Misa is very good at coloring and shaping and helping me to grow my hair. She is a great listener too which is a great added benefit. The manager of the Salon is also very friendly and welcoming. Libby is hands down the best hair stylist who has ever colored my hair. I don't even know where to begin. I guess let me start with the fact that it's been 4 months since I've had my hair colored with her and I was just asked this morning if I just got my hair colored. Now that's some magic. She does this foil that blends in with my hair and it's just so easy to maintain. She is great at doing cuts that have a retro / classic look (but still modern) which I love love love! My hair has definitely transformed since I started getting my hair done by her 2 years ago. I'm so excited to find my go-to salon, finally. I've only lived here for 17 years! It feels like a little treetop hideaway, which I find enormously appealing. The space is unique- you go up a narrow flight of stairs, and enter what feels like a secret beauty aerie. Brick and wood, lovely light, antique vanities, high ceilings, and a lush rooftop garden up a flight of stairs. It's cozy and welcoming and not at all uptight. The people are lovely. Lucius is a doll, and I actually enjoyed our banter- something I usually dread when visiting salons. I found their prices more than reasonable. And most importantly, my hair looks great! read more
