I gave this review a full 36h before writing because I wanted to give this haircut a fair shake, but I still hate it... I'd gone to Lee because I usually like a salon who's experienced with Asian hair chemistry, but my hair looks worse after the cut. I so wanted to support a small, woman-owned business. The only reason she didn't get a one star is because she also cut my husband's hair and his looks okay. Not fantastic, since the sides aren't blended very evenly (you can see the line instead of an even gradation) but it's passable. Mine however is disastrous. I'd grown it out for 3 months but now I have to start over. Her prices are not as cheap as they seem at first glance. For short hair, she charges $24. For mine (just below shoulder) she charged $30. This is without any washing/shampooing or styling. At the end of my haircut she must've seen my dismay so she became defensive saying "the HAIRCUT is good. Now it's up to YOU to style it to make it look like the photo." Of course styling plays a role, but even after going home to wash and blow dry it myself twice now, I still look... like a mushroom. Honestly, I'm devastated, but I suppose receiving a less than ideal haircut is a rite of passage for moving into a new city. read more

As y'all know, I don't wash my own hair. It's too long and I can never get it as nice and straight as a hairdresser can. I didn't sleep well on Friday night so I was totally sleepy and groggy most of Saturday morning. I made an appointment with my bestie but I slept through it. So I made an appointment with Blowout, I dozed off during that appointment too. I then made another appointment somewhere else. You guessed it, I feel asleep. I'm usually not so disrespectful of other peoples time. I had the worst pain in my neck from sleeping sitting up on my futon. Karma. I was still desperate to get my hair washed before I went to see my boyfriend. I was looking for somewhere out of downtown and on the east side. I called Star Salon and the nice lady told me that, yes she could shampoo and straighten my hair for me. She asked if I could come in now and I told her yes. I didn't dare sit down and fall asleep again! When I got there there was nobody there but her and me. The gal working on my hair is named Lee, and she's the owner of the salon. She says it's been there for 17 years. That's a long time to be in the neighborhood. What amazing and drastic changes she has seen. She had me lean back for the shampoo and conditioner, usually my least favorite part, but her chair and sink setup was somehow amazingly comfortable. The then proceeded to give me the best shampoo I've ever had in my life. I told her that. After the conditioning we went back to the styling chair. Even when a professional does it, it takes forever to dry my hair. So this is the only reason I'm giving 4 stars instead of 5., on Yelp her salon is listed as blow dry/out services. However, when I asked her about putting some heat protection product on my hair which is the norm, she said she doesn't usually do this so she didn't have any. I thought that odd because after a shampoo, condition and haircut I should think those clients would want heat protection on their hair. I moved to Portland 2 years ago and have bounced around between Rudy's, Rooks and Manly and Sons. I have never had a preference, I just always call them up and see who can take me the soonest. Not too picky about my barber. My neighbor told me he went to Star so I decided to check it out. Plus, during quarantine my wife cut my hair for the last 4 months and anything would be better! I came in for a minor fix on a recent haircut and left with my hair looking 10x worse. I asked Lee to put in some choppy layers and add a bit of texture to my slight a-line/lob style because the back of my head was pretty thick and heavy. I told her she could trim a bit if needed but emphasized that I didn't want to go much shorter. She cut off way more of my hair than I wanted and gave me a horrible blunt bob. She said that she "liked this kind of bob much better", but I don't recall giving her artistic license and saying hey, do whatever *you* like. On top of this, she told me she had to charge an extra $5 to blow dry it when that wasn't a service I asked for. I agreed because I thought she needed to see it curled in to trim it properly (one side of my hair tends to flip out annoyingly after a while), but it became apparent that she only wanted to show me how to style my hair while drying--which I already know how to do. Lee is pretty friendly and kept saying "this is a good haircut!" but did not listen to what I wanted AT ALL. I was came in because of the good reviews and price, but feel like you should be warned not to come here unless you're comfortable getting a dealer's choice haircut. read more

I asked when I could come in, and she said she accepts walk-ins, and she had time right then and there. Perfect! I walked a couple minutes and was sat in the chair right away. I have long hair, but the total cost of my haircut with layers was $24. Mind you, my hair was pretty damaged, and she did a great job getting rid of the split ends. Went in for a same day appointment and the stylist/owner took me in, I have really damaged and dry hair from frequent coloring and perms and she did a great job making me have a new look (shoulder length with layers) with just a few instructions. I've been coming here for about 10 years or more. The owner, Lee, is a sweet Vietnamese Mom of three. What I like. If I come Tues - Thurs, I'm sure to get in. Fridays and Saturday can be busy, but most of the time I can get in within 20 minutes. Star is closed Sunday and Monday. Be sure to bring cash or a check. Over the weekend my friends and I decided it'd be a good idea to bleach my hair, it wasn't and it left my long hair totally fried. I was a bit nervous to get my haircut up here since I didn't really know the area well but luckily I found Star Salon! Lee was friendly and tried to get an idea of what I wanted (I recommend bringing a couple of photos of how you like your hair or the style you're trying to go for). Ultimately, she did a really good job cleaning up my hair! I wanted to keep the look long which is how I like it but remove all the clump, she was able to do that! She took her time and made sure things were even, looked good, and checked in to make sure I was satisfied. The price ($18) was also very very reasonable in my opinion. I've been getting haircuts from Lee for years. She's been consistent every time and has very affordable prices. With the shop back open she did a great of job keeping the interior clean and sanitary. I went to this place for the first time based off reviews from Yelp & Google. I left a happy customer. It's in a trendy are near bars & restaurants on SE Division street. The salon is bright, clean, well designed and professional. It's simple and not pretentious. The lady is very nice, personable and really makes an effort to make light friendly conversation. I have "Asian" hair which can be tricky because it's so straight and easy to butcher. She knew exactly where to fade, thin, and blend my hair to make it look the way I like exactly. Star salon is my haircut joint. It's a one woman show: Lee is very friendly and attentive. It takes her a while to do a regular man's haircut, but I think it's because she's paying close attention. We don't have a lot of idle chatter. I also take my kids and she's great with them. She's obviously cut lots of children's hair. She does cut women's hair as well, although I only seen a few girls in there in the last few years. I'm sure she would do great on straight hair, but she didn't do so hot on my wife's curly hair. She never parted my hair or organized it much, she just started taking random chops and that was that. I came home and found chunks of hair that were left 3 in long. It was so embarrassing. I guess I should know by now that I can't afford cheap hair cuts. I got a wash and cut. The wash consisted of a shampoo bowl that didn't drain properly and no conditioner. So when it was time to brush through my hair it was completely tangled. She asked what I wanted done: I said a trim and bangs. I was a bit startled when she took a razor out and started to thin it. I told her that I don't want my hair cut with a razor because I have very thick, wavy, coarse hair and the razor completely frizzes it out. She kind of scoffed and sighed at me because it was "too bulky". Well, I wear my hair big, so I like the bulk. I'm kind of attached to it. Or it's attached to me rather. So she reluctantly reached for the scissors and began trimming. The final result: she left the length like I wanted so that was good, but there are a few of out of place really short layers on top, which is upsetting. Also, she cut my bangs way too thick and left them too long, even though I showed her a picture. Those are going to take a year to grow back. The saving grace is that I didn't spend 120 dollars on a bunk hair cut (which has happened to me before). Two stars for Star Salon. read more
