I have very long hair and thick hair so there was an additional fee that also made the appointment longer to accommodate my longer hair. The hairstylist I went to was Michelle, she was very kind and had a great vibe. She went through my hair and cut a bunch of split ends throughout my hair. She was very detail oriented and gentle on my hair. In all she seems like a great stylist and person and I felt like I had great conversation with her. I was connected with the education coordinator, Nicki. I was booked for two other appointments to fix the situation. First app to tone and 2nd to actually do what I had originally paid for. Ginger and Maude salon is a big part of my selfcare--better than my therapist! I've had some major life changes, and Deanna has been there for me and glammed me up so I could handle anything. I love that there are just a couple of salon chairs in each location. Feels like a club. Over the seven years or so that I've been going there, I've seen magic happen for me and for other people at the salons (I've been to all of them). Poor customer service experience. I've been a client here for a long time. The stylists are usually very good and I generally like the multiple location options. Today I ran across town to my hair appointment and was informed that my stylist was sick. They told me they have texted me twice beforehand to let me know. Zero. Zero.Zero. Zero text messages from anyone or any number regarding cancellation of my appointment. Funny enough I did receive texts and emails confirming/reminding me of my appointment day before and days, and week before. Hhmm. I work in the service industry and we do not rely on text messages to cancel an appointment . If the recipient doesn't reply, we do this thing called CALLING. We don't want an upset client/customer/patient to go to the trouble of getting themselves to the appointment only to be turned away. It's poor customer care/service. And in the end these two front desk people didn't even offer any complimentary services/discounts or anything for their poor service and seriously inconveniencing me. I booked online for a full color and cut with Carrie so I could pay the new talent price, but when I arrived my stylist told me I had only books for a cut and therefore that's all she has time to do for me. I figured it was my mistake and happily got my cut, until I checked my confirmation email later and saw I did in fact book for color as well. Also, I was charged the master stylist price for my cut despite having booked specifically with new talent for the lower cost. Unfortunately, despite the beautiful cut and the friendly and clean environment, all the miscommunication was really frustrating. This review is directed towards one hairdresser in particular, not the salon as a whole. This hairdresser gave me the worst hair experience I have had in my entire life.  I had been bleaching my hair for 10 years and decided it was time to suck it up and grow out my natural hair. I spent 3 years growing out my natural hair, which was very tough for me. The long roots would be worth it in the end when I could have my own natural hair. Finally, I had finished growing my hair to my goal length I've always wanted. I was extremely nervous since I have trust issues with hair dressers, but I decided it was time to finally cut off 2 inches of dead hair on the bottom I'd been holding on to. Since all I wanted was a super simple, a blunt trim, I figured any professional would do a fine job. I discussed and showed them exactly what I wanted done. I could physically hold in front of me the amount of hair I wanted her to cut off. We agreed on no shorter than collar bone length. I even asked before we started if she could cut little-by-little and keep checking in with me to see how much more I wanted off, because I told her I'd rather have too little cut off than too much. They agreed to that. By the time she started cutting my hair from behind to where I could see it, I immediately addressed my concern. My hair was about an INCH long in the back! My heart dropped into my chest, and I was shocked. Within a snip of their scissors, my 3 years of growth was now lying helpless on the floor. I told her to stop where she was. She tried to save it by saying things like, "It has to be short in the back to give your hair volume" and (now that she cut off 8 inches) "It'll grow faster!" Ear length is not collar bone length. I think she was trying to go for an outdated asymmetrical undercut bob. But why in the world would you ever take creative liberty on a complete stranger? I don't care if you think it will look great, it's not what I came in here and asked for or paid for. If you're a hairdresser and you don't do what your client asks of you, you haven't done your job.  I was nervous to get a short trim to show off my years of natural virgin hair growth, but instead, it was chopped off. I haven't stopped crying for a week. Every time I feel the tiny hair on the back of my head I cry. I can't stop grieving over that fact that in seconds my years of growth was gone. I hate the way I look now. I went in to address my complaint and get a refund the day after. I spoke with the salon owner and salon manager who addressed the issue in such a polite and kind manner. They refunded me and were very understanding of my situation. That proved me to that my experience does not represent Ginger salon as a whole, and if you pick any other hairdresser I'm sure you'll have a great experience. I just hope that your experience is better than mine. read more

I just went to Ginger & Maude for the first time tonight and had my hair cut by Jennifer who gave me the best haircut I've had in years. It's always a bit daunting trying to find someone that knows how to cut fine curly hair but she nailed it. She took off just the right amount to put life back into my curls without cutting too much off like so many other stylists do that don't realize how much shrinkage there is once your hair dries. I am so happy to have found this salon and Jennifer, she is fantastic and super fun to talk to. read more

Fair warning: This salon has a policy that clients who have bad experiences and receive refunds will then be banned from scheduling future appointments at any of their locations. This "policy" was detailed to me via email after expressing my disappointments post first appointment at the NW Ginger Salon. After declining a complimentary follow-up service to correct my hair, due to my issues not mainly being with the overall final product, I was graciously provided a full refund with the stipulation that I could never return. A partial refund was all I requested in order to be compensated for the bad experience I had, but was instead offered all my money back and a one-way ticket to essentially fuck off. As a first time excited client, I find this policy incredibly harsh. It invalidates the clients experience and labels them as a burden to the business. This is no way to treat any client if they come to you with a complaint. The most appropriate and professional way to respond would have been to apologize for the experience, compensate the client, and promise that all future interactions with their salon would be top-notch. NOT to ban them for issuing a complaint for a paid service. To briefly detail what my complaints were regarding, I've listed them below for all prospective or returning clients to review: 1. Didn't Receive All Aspects of my $190+ Service: My stylist, Shakyra, didn't start the appointment with a consultation nor did she request photos for what my desired end result would be. She asked me one question about my desires and then left to mix the color. I showed her photos on my own will, but my hair didn't end up looking like them. Additionally, I didn't receive a full blow-dry and style service. We agreed upon a straight blow-out, but since my hair is naturally curly, I was left with a half-straight, half-curly mess that frankly looked horrible. 2. Poor Customer Service: During the appointment, I felt like anything I said to my stylist was annoying her. She wouldn't acknowledge things I said, and half the appointment was spent in silence. As a new potential client, I did not feel like she was attempting to create a rapport with me to keep me coming back. Instead, I was treated like just another head of hair passing through her chair. 3. Face/Forehead Badly Stained from Hair Color: The worst part of this service was the fact that I was forced to leave the salon with my face/forehead covered in dark dye stains (see photos). The dye was left on my skin in large globs while the color processed for 20+ minutes. I have been dying my hair for years & never have I walked out of the salon stained so badly. I was then left to vigorously scrub the stains off my skin at home which left my face very irritated. 4. Excessive Price for Trim: As other reviews have stated, this salon charges an exorbitant amount for hair cuts and they don't ever lower this price for trim services. This is due to the fact that they apparently don't offer trim services. However, they will gladly trim your hair and still charge you the $60+ full cut price without informing you of this. Never have I been to a high-end salon that didn't offer trim services or a lower rate for a dusting off the ends. And the topping on the cake was the dismissive responses I received from the front desk team and the owner via email when I sent them my complaints. I can clearly see this place has a lot of good reviews and many people have excellent experiences, but I wanted to share my two-cents about what I just went through with this business as a simple fair warning. If you have a bad experience, and don't want them to have another chance to botch your hair and/or face for that matter, then you won't be allowed to return. Schedule at your own risk, but never have I had a business treat me so poorly. read more

Not good at all. My stylist was super sweet and I enjoyed talking with her, but that was honestly my only positive experience. My haircut is decent but the highlights and health of my hair are truly awful. My hair has never felt so dry and unhealthy and the color looks terrible. My highlights were not blended at all and you can see gold blonde streaks across my dark roots, even though I specifically said I wanted my dark roots covered and the picture I showed was of an ashy blonde (a color I have been getting for 4+ years now, so it was completely possible). Sassy fun or bad business? So I stopped in at the Ginger & Maude - Slabtown location and requested to purchase a gift card. The woman at the desk was very pleasant and told me that she wasn't sure if they had physical gift cards anymore and that she would have to check. She made a quick call and after she hung up, we had the following exchange (in a very factual, unemotional way): me: I am only interested in a physical card her: We only have electronic gift cards me: That's too bad as it is going to cost you $200 her: Well, sorry me: Ok, thanks I walked out the door and as the door was closing, at a very audible level (unemotional, but intended for me to hear), she (or someone inside) stated "We don't need your money anyway" So I ask again, sassy fun, or bad business? Went in a few times for a cut. Not sure what the problem was, but I had terrible results both times (with a different stylist both times, once from the owner). I had an appointment with a third stylist scheduled, and to be honest I was dreading it after my first two cuts, but thankfully they canceled due to the stylist being ill. I really wanted to like this salon bc they're queer friendly, body positive, and embraced (and went above and beyond) COVID-19 safety protocols to keep everyone safe. All I wanted was a queer cut that reflected who I am. The first time I left with my side burns, and hair across my forehead being really uneven. The second (done by the owner) I left with the top layer on one side a half an inch shorter than the lower layers, and uneven side burns once again. The owner stylist didn't even shape the back and shave the neck hair. If you decide to go here, then I sincerely hope you have better results than I did. The people are kind, respectful, and they certainly act with professionalism. I wish I could say the same about the actual hair cuts. I didn't ask for a refund or anything from either cut, nor did I share these complaints with the salon (we live in a capitalist world, and you gotta have those life tokens to live, right?). Plus, I'm sure it was just the face masks that made it difficult to deliver on a good queer cut. TL;DR Great philosophy and service, fell short on the actual execution. ‍ read more

Disappointed. I asked for some layering in my mid length hair and my shortest later is like 5 inches long. My hair is shaped like a diamond. Thick around my ears and flimsy at the bottom. I'm going to have to go somewhere else to get the bottom cropped up quite a bit so it looks more normal. Disappointed that my explanation of what I was desiring was not what resulted. I'm not too picky either, so I left a lot up to the stylist. Maybe make sure that you know exactly what you want and can describe it well. I'm sure it's a great salon if you can do that. Obviously, they must know what they're doing because they have great reviews, but this was a big miss for me. Expensive mistake and a lot of length (growing time) eventually lost in the fix. OMFG. I am... a GODDESS. Look. I walked in off the streets looking like a hell-beast with hair that resembled an over colored, DIY project. Which. Well. It was. I had scoured the interwebs for a stylist that was A) a master of color, and B) a master of curly. I found Zach at Ginger Salon in the Pearl. People would have flipped me a quarter to get a bowl of soup out of sympathy. I brought in a photo of Jessica Alba and asked Zach to make me look EXACTLY like Jessica Alba. Okay, that didn't entirely happen, obviously, I'm still the tired old hag I've always been, but NOW, I am a tired old hag with FABULOUS HAIR that ROCKS THE CASBAH. It's expensive, I'm not going to lie. It bit into my wine budget, which made me sad. But, I don't ever want to go anywhere else. Zach is the bees freakin' knees. I would travel to Zach from out of state if I had to. Out of country! Okay: Real talk. You're out a few hundy. Buuuuuut, people are stopping you on the street, like: "Oh, heyyyyyy." And you're like: "Care to buy me a glass (bottle) of wine, new friend?" And you flip your head like one of those fancy ladies in the movies and bat those gorgeous lashes that you've been using that over-priced serum on. You know, like Jessica Alba or something. Anyway - if you are looking for really kick-ass balayage and color and fixing in order to be an IT GIRL (even if only to your mother), Zach is your person. Really wanted to love it here and had an amazing start. The stylist I saw for the consult took a tiny snip of hair to make sure prior to our appointment she knew how my hair would lift. That was super impressive. She communicated very well and let me know we weren't going to get to where I wanted in one sitting. My goal was to go natural grey from my dark brown hair and do some baby lights to break-up the demarcation line of my grow-out. So far things were awesome! The day of the appointment I thought things went well. After she was done I thought I looked dark throughout my hair still but she said to look @ it in natural light and then let it settle in since it was a big change. After a couple days I realized that even though we discussed (and I was charged) for full baby lights... I had tons of places in my hair where there were no baby lights where I had grey. At best I had partial baby lights. There was a bunch of work in the front and top layer but nothing underneath or past the front part. I called a couple times to talk to the front desk and let them know I wasn't happy and get clarification. They weren't helpful unfortunately. My stylist was nice and used great products however she didn't do what she said or what I was charged for. Maybe she didn't book enough time? I would have been fine if that was the case and came back... but that wasn't communicated. Instead I was charged for a full price job and got half the work. Tonight I had my hair cut by Kady and this is seriously the best haircut I've ever had. After months of being afraid of salons from bad experiences, I needed to cut it for joining the military. I needed a cute but conservative haircut and she listened to my requests and gave me a perfect bob with just enough edge to get away with it! My brother went with me to the salon, and he was so impressed with her work that she is going to cut his hair next. I moved to Portland a year ago and being the new kid on the block I was a bit hesitant to get a hair cut because I haven't found my match. She offered me coffee or water while I waited and since my appointment is in the earlier part of the day, I choose coffee. So finally, the moment I've been waiting for! She called me to her chair and asked me what I had planned for my hair. I told her what I wanted and soon she was chopping away. We made conversations..you know... that first meet up questions and answers. We also discussed about my hair and scalp issues and she gave me great advice for what I have currently going on. Btw, super awesome advice! Well of course, you all know what happened next! It turned out to be the best hair cut I've had in a while! Stina is so talented! I was actually speechless after seeing my cut...All I kept saying is "oh wow!...oh my gosh!..wow!" hahaha. I guess that shows how muchI love my haircut. She was also not pushy about hair products, I've had stylist who made you feel like you have to buy the product they use on you but Stina was not like that at all. There is street parking some 2hr zones and some 4hr all free-would suggest a 10 minute window before your appointment though because it is a crowded area in the NW division.
