Our air went out around 5pm. I requested a quote through Yelp, and Butler Heating and Air was one of the first responses, and he was available next the next morning. James gave me a time from 8-10, and arrived within the window. James is very knowledgeable about HVAC systems and got to work. I did not have an opportunity to get a second opinion, partially due to the fact that I felt trust between his company and I, with just the "replace the whole thing" motto, and his knowledge with my particular unit. TEMECULA, CA. We really hoped to do business with Butler. He seemed great initially, personable and knowledgeable. Our initial quote for a full replacement of the entire unit was $15,300 and then he started to highly discount. Which you would think well that is great right or he really wants to make a sale? We had gotten another quote that ended up being closer to what Butlers discounted quote was $12,300. I am glad we asked the other company to review the quote, they said the machines itself were comparable but the freon he was going to use R410A is BEING PHASED OUT. These machines can still be serviced but why are we paying similar prices for a machine and freon that is being phased out. What was worse is that we gave him the benefit of the doubt (we are by far not as qualified as these HVAV companies) we messaged him asking him to please explain and he never responded. Weird right? Was he trying to pull a fast one on us? Idk but just be careful and ask the right questions. Response: you have reached out within the last hour, not the last couple of days. I liked everything about James. Well spoken, quick response, informative, and very professional. I liked that he was a young man who started his own business and I was definitely impressed by his high ratings and feedback on Yelp. I admired his entrepreneurial spirit. Great guy. He instilled confidence, as he really seemed to know his stuff. I have an older system that had been working fine, but was suddenly struggling to cool the air sufficiently and I suspected low refrigerant levels. James showed up early the next morning and informed me that yes it looked like I had a slow leak. He explained that there was still refrigerant in the system, but it needed about 4 lb of refrigerant added in order to restore my cooling function. He added a sealant and 4 lbs of R22. I was quoted $400/lb for it. James seemed eager to show me a Reddit post on his phone where someone was complaining about the high cost of R22, referencing that exact amount! James assured me that I could check around and that everyone was charging this price, so I accepted this as the truth and okayed the work. I knew my system was going to need replacement sooner than later, but hoped that this quick-fix would at least get us through the rest of the summer. While James was here, I asked him for a quote for a system replacement and told him I'd be back in touch when the time came. After James left, I did a quick online search that revealed the current wholesale cost for a 10 lb cannister of R22 (July, 2024) was $318, delivered, or $31.80/lb. I did check with half a dozen HVAC professionals and received various quotes. Out of curiosity, I asked them what they charge for R22 on their service calls. They ranged all the way from $95lb to $250/lb. Of the six HVAC outfits I contacted, there was just one other who quoted $400 lb for R22 like James had. I don't know about you, but 3 or 4x cost seems reasonable to me for R22 refrigerant, plus labor, naturally, but 12 x?? About ten days later when my compressor totally failed, I chose a different HVAC company to fix it. Butler's quote for a replacement condenser and coil was $2,400 more on average, than the other quotes I received, which means that even if James had been willing to credit me the entire $1,600 amount of the R22, I still would have lost money on the deal. So I thought it would be best for all concerned to just move on. Bottom line, if you have an older system using R22 that needs servicing, look elsewhere. Or at the very least, do your research and see what the CURRENT going rate is for the stuff and then negotiate accordingly. I felt like I paid $1,600 for what reasonably should have maybe been a $700 service call and ultimately, felt taken advantage of. Butler Heating and Air may have taken me for a nice profit on the R22 service call, but they lost any future business I might have given them. I hope Mr. Butler has learned a valuable lesson from this. I know I have. I hold no malice or animosity towards Mr. Butler. He quoted me the price and I agreed to pay it. We get ads all the time for people for people/companies that claim to know what they are doing. When we first moved in we used one of the ads to have someone come take a look. They gave an overpriced estimate with little promised. So we turned to Yelp, Google, and Next Door. There were no reviews on Next Door which we took as a good sign. Google had six raving reviews that did not seem contrived. And Yelp was also positive. They were right. We easily made an appointment. We scheduled a visit. The person was on time, professional, personal, and clearly knew their business. In the 19 years we have owned our home no one could get the air to come to the back bedroom properly, and now I have been sleeping comfortably for a week. We were given solid advice on how to maintain. We selected a service that fit our budget and needs and were not then surprised by any add-ons or upselling. It was legit and comfortable. He even took the time to explain some things when I looked curious. High Recommend.
