Buttercup is exactly what Natick has been needing: an inviting restaurant where you can grab a drink or a meal with friends or on a date, and of course, delicious food. On a Friday night, Buttercup was packed (be sure to make reservations) and the food was worth the wait. I was excited to try out this restaurant because Natick doesn't have another one like it. Service was a little slow, but once we did order, the food came out quickly. Almond three of us, we had the Campanelle Bolognese, Beef Short Ribs over homemade pasta, and the vegetarian risotto. For dessert, we had the brownie with vanilla ice cream. Everything was delicious and fresh. The presentation was beautiful with addition of micro greens on the entrees. I would definitely love to return to Buttercup in the near future. I highly recommend Buttercup to anyone in the area. read more

Fun location and ambiance, decent food, expensive. Downtown Natick definitely is starving for a place like this. The outdoor seating is great and gets shaded for dinner. Indoor is nice and clean with exposed brick and lots of white tones. Feels peaceful but still vaguely farmhousey. The food was good, not great. So-so cheese board. Good burger, great truffle fries, and great veggie risotto. It's expensive though... the beers and wines are pricey and so are the entrees. $150 (with tip) for two with a couple drinks. We'll definitely go again but the high prices make this a "once in a while" place, not a date night staple. read more

Food is very good, clearly fresh and well prepared- bolognese and halibut were delicious- service is painfully slow, though pleasant, so be prepared to wait. Room is lovely, all in all a nice experience if you don't mind waiting forever. read more

Wish I had thought to snap a couple photos before I dove into dinner last night but I couldn't help myself! I began with the chilled avocado soup, which was extremely tasty and refreshing. I didn't know what to expect but was pleasantly surprised and happy with it. For dinner, I had the vegetarian risotto with mushrooms, asparagus, tomato, and peas. It was one of the best meals I've ever had! It was THAT good. Everything my dining companions had was fantastic as well. We were headed to a show at TCAN and this place was mentioned on their website. It was an easy 2 minute walk away so we gave it a shot. Everything was outstanding. We were hoping to snag a table outside because it was a nice evening, but they filled. We were seated on the bar side, with a wall blocking out the noise from the main room. That was good because it did get loud as the place gradually filled up. We skipped our usual straight up vodka and gin martinis and tried two off their menu. My wife had a vodka and rosemary based concoction, with instructions to go easy on the rosemary infused simple syrup. I had some gin-based thing, I've forgotten exactly what was in it. Both drinks were very nice. Moving on to apps, peach, tomato and burratta for me, and baby beet salad for the missus. I think hers also had burratta in it. We had to google that to find out what it was. A very mild, soft blend of italian cheeses. Very nice. My wife ordered the fish tacos. I'm not a huge fan of those, but we both agreed these were outstanding, among the best we've ever tried. I almost ordered the bolognese, but the waiter convinced me to go with the halibut. It too was outstanding. We passed on desert, but did have some decafe coffee. I see other reviews mentioning it wasn't an option, but it seems they've started offering it. The waiter really encouraged us to try the tres something or other. Next time. And unlike that crap Worcester steak house I reviewed last month, we WILL be back here. To top it off we were a mere 90 second walk over to TCAN, where Tom Rush and his awesome side kick Matt Noka put on an outstanding show. read more

Mussels were delicious in a light coconut broth. The buttercup salad was fresh and tasty. The short rib pasta was outstanding as was the Lamb sirloin. Ate here with friends last evening. Overall, a delightful evening even if a little bit loud. A small-ish but reasonable by-glass wine list. One couple shared a peach, tomato and buratta cheese appetizer, The other couple shared a gazpacho. Entrees - Two of us had halibut, one had short ribs, one had fish tacos. Our host tried to seat us in the sun during a heat wave, while the entire patio was empty, full of tables in the shade! That's messed up. Our server was great though. Shrimp ceviche was not good, but we really liked the fried cod, scallops, and vegetable risotto. Key lime pie was good too. read more

It is hard to find a really good restaurant in the suburbs. Most are boring suburban food. And as a vegetarian, I particularly look for interesting options. Buttercup hit all the bases. We loved our time here. We took all the last reviews to mind: small portions, higher price, noise. Honestly, we had an awesome time. We adored the soft homemade bread to start, too! We did order 3 small apps and each had an entree (fish tacos and burger with truffle fries), and each had an alcoholic drink. By the end I couldn't finish my last bites, and our bill with tip was right about $100. We felt like it was worth it - and the food was great. I can not believe the service I received at this place especially because i heard many good things about this establishment. I drove from NC just to try this place and visit family.The receptionist was very rude to me and my friend. They canceled my reservation and after all the back and forth because I was upset and respectfully spoke to a manger on duty they sat me down almost an hour later. Went to dinner with a friend. We had 1 appetizers (6 mussels), two small salads (a few leafs of bib lettuce and three cherry tomatoes) , a bowl of soup, 1 mixed drink and a glass of Pinot. Our bill was $100.00. The wait staff was inattentive, indifferent and blew us off once they realized we weren't happy customers. Over 2.5 to get served to paying the tab. The mixes drink (Manhattan) was $11.00, the Pinot was $15.00 a glass. We were never asked if we wanted a second drink, warm water without ice was served- once. There was no bread basket, breadsticks or any adornment to anything served. The noise in the restaurant is unnerving. The ladies room was filthy. The radiator next to our table was filled with food bits and bugs. Needless to say we won't be going back. The restaurant was full. The wait staff maxed. Why this owner doesn't reduce the number of seatings to provide a nice dining experience with quality food is clearly a money grab on their part. While I don't have an issue with paying for quality food and service at these prices if they had stiff competition they'd be out of business. read more

Been in quarantine for over a month now. It's meant we're trying new recipes etc and that is great. But at least once a week we order a delivery from Buttercup as a treat. We are never disappointed. First of all, the food arrives fresh and hot, delivered to our door by a masked and gloved server, who always gives a friendly wave from a safe distance. It's hard not to order the bolognese. It is so flavorful and seems to melt in your mouth. But the short ribs and pasta is also yummy and I'm partial to the beet salad. We often end up ordering the lavender pound cake and bread pudding to save for another meal. Recently, Dora has made some additions to the menu. In particular we recommend the fried chicken with three dipping sauces. Excellent chicken, two pieces, couldn't pick a favorite sauce but saved what was left to spread on crackers. Or, while you're ordering include half a loaf of sourdough bread. Great for sopping up any sauce and for breakfast the next day. Now your order can include beer or wine. The Be Hoppy IPA (which isn't as hoppy as the name implies or that we feared) was great with the chicken. So, yeah, this is our go to treat but we really want to keep Buttercup in business. And Dora is committed to trying to keep her staff employed. So please join us in ordering from them. So much better than standard take out. You won't be disappointed. read more

Had always loved this place but last night really changed things. We had a 7:30 res outside. Waited for a while on the sidewalk and then they put two tables together for the 4 of us. Then we waited and waited finally flagged down a waitress. Totally get they are clearly short staffed, that being said don't take so many reservations. Based on the long wait we ordered everything at once. Drinks, apps, dinner. The cornbread and two salads arrived quickly. Wedges were good but cornbread was underwhelming. Not warm and clearly plated and ready to go. Still no drinks. Halfway through drinks finally arrived. Waited almost 45 more minutes for our entrees. The halibut was excellent. The short rib w pasta was good. The lobster roll was mediocre and the mushroom risotto was tasteless. Decided we best get desert since dinner was less than exciting. Ordered the brownie and the strawberry short cake. Brownie arrived not too long later, strawberry shortcake 10 min after that. Overall was A sub par evening. I just ordered delivery and everything was amazing. I ordered the flank steak which was perfection. My mom ordered the halibut and she said it was very fresh and delicious. The bartender, (Laura?) neither greeted us, smiled, or offered us a second drink or asked us how our meal was, (halibut was either prev. frozen or very over cooked, salad was $11, blah, zero special about it)...we would have ordered dessert & another glass of wine and coffee, but it took five minutes to flag Laura down and by that time we were done. $100 was NOT well spent. Wish this place was good because we need more places to eat in Natick that aren't chains! But alas, this is an example of "farm-to-table" done wrong. Serving me everything in a goddamn mason jar (including butter served on the LID and water poured from an old milk jug into ... you guessed it, a mason jar) doesn't make you a farm-to-table restaurant. Cooking delicious food with simple, local ingredients does. I paid $36 for a scallop entree that had THREE SCALLOPS. That's just laughable. Fish tacos are just ok and $20+. Fried calamari is like at every other restaurant. We left hungry, despite a hefty bill. I'd love it if they would take another stab at the menu, offering either larger portions of food that make better use of local ingredients or adjusting the prices to match what you get. read more

Wow! So good! We found a couple seats at the bar and started with a drink and the charcuterie board. The charcuterie board was good, the waiter who placed the board informed us of what everything was. The pairings were really delicious. My first drink is the only reason I gave 4 and not 5 stars. I ordered the rose sangria and for $13 it wasn't anything special. A good amount of ice and the flavor was more like a lighter watery strawberry rosè. However, it wasn't bad, just not what I'd expect for $13. My second drink was a cosmo and the bar tender recommended with Cointreau. That was delicious and much more reasonably priced for $13, it was great flavor , obviously a little strong because it's a cosmo but not over powering. My boyfriend ordered beer which came in a can ( I don't think they have beer on tap- if you're looking for that) which was $10 a beer. We split the fish tacos( pan fried) and beef short rib. Both were amazing, some of the best tacos I've ever had. We also had fries which came out first as we asked. They were hot and crispy. Overall it was a great experience. The restaurant is well lit and very cozy. The bar is small but a great space. The place is a little pricey but the meal quality was up there, other than my first drink and canned beer (not from some exclusive Vermont brewery) I don't think anything was unreasonably priced. My friend and I were looking for a good halfway point to meet for some al fresco dining after being cooped up inside for months. We could not have not have asked for a better spot! Our waitress was so warm and welcoming and the food was incredible. We started with the lavender cornbread with whupped ricotta and it was one of the most delicious appetizers I have ever had! There isn't enough to say about the delicious food and fantastic service at Buttercup. I hosted my sister's engagement party there and the entire Buttercup staff stepped in to make it SO personal and special. Dora crafted a scrumptious, seasonally appropriate menu within my price range, and every single guest commented how delicious and unique the food was, from bacon-wrapped dates to mac n cheese on a stick to lollipop lambchops -- every round was more delicious than the last. Larry and Connor made delicious custom cocktails for our very large party and no one was ever waiting -- what a feat! Vinny set up the room beautifully with low light and custom decorations that I never could have done in a thousand years. And Claire was our concierge and provided such gracious service and helped with setup and breakdown, greeting and guided guests. If you are considering an event, I can't recommend Buttercup any more for a beautiful venue, with exquisite food tailored to your needs and served by a kind and professional staff. Okay I quite love this place. The not five stars is purely because it's always too crowded and most of the tables are very close to each other and lots of them are in awkward places where you get bumped by people trying to get to their tables or trying to get to the bar. It's also quite expensive so it's not a pop in weekly place as I wanted . However, the food is excellent the drinks are excellent and for a busy Saturday night the bar tenders were great and the food came out fairly quickly. It's not great for families with younger kids ... I'm saying this because I would rather they not come ! When we are drinking martinis and paying a lot of money for a sexy anniversary dinner , the last thing we wanted ... and got was a large loud family with large loud kids !!! read more

The one positive I found from this place was that the aesthetic was gorgeous. But honestly service was terrible. I arrived late to my party and the server didn't even ask for my drink order until my friend had chased him down. He had come to the table and greeted me without asking me for my order, then proceeded to spill it all over me and our overly expensive cheese platter when it was delivered. We were not given a new cheese platter nor was it removed from the bill and we were not offered a free desert or anything. The manager even came over and just barely apologized for the server... The amount of money spent at this establishment was absolutely not worth the food or horrible service. However I got a good pic for the 'gram. read more

Great newer restaurant in Natick Center, which, hopefully, will catalyze a revival of this otherwise moribund/burnt-out downtown area. Dora and Gabriel also own and operate the Farmhouse in Needham Center, a hopping place serving great food. They've managed to successfully repeat the formula with Buttercup. Kudos to them! read more
