Fun and unique experience in the park. You can ride a stagecoach like they did in the old days of the wild West. Wait times can vary drastically for this, since it really depends on how parties are split up and of course since this "ride" functions with real live animals pulling the stage coach. Our wait went from 10 minutes to around 40 minutes as there were lots of large groups ahead of us and it was during peak temperatures for the day. Each stagecoach is pulled by 4 horses with a driver in the front. You can either be seated inside the stagecoach, 3 cushioned seats (can seat around 2 adults each), or on top of the stage coach, facing forward with the driver or facing backward. It does get a bit bumpy, which is the fun of all of it and I thought it was pretty neat too that the the horses go up some hilly parts and gain some traction and speed. You can see some views of the park such as Fiesta Village, Camp Snoopy, and even the front of Knott's and it always excites other guests when they see the horses go around. They really are working hard and deserve all the rest and water breaks in between. I love going on horse-drawn carriages and seeing vintage stagecoaches so I was excited to go with my family of 4 on this ride! The horses are lovely and it's for all ages. You cannot choose your seat, but the ride felt unstable, so I'm glad we sat inside the stagecoach. I got nervous when we got stuck uphill for a while. On our second day, last week, the last official day of Spring Break (for LV, NV and AZ students, but there were Physics students, field trips, dance students, cheer students, etc.), we got to ride it for the first time. Hubby said he feels sorry for the horses, but they look like they are cared for properly (they all look pretty healthy to me), and the lady at the stables, said they work in four hour shifts (they are switched out at the stables). I enjoyed it, however, we were inside the coach, guess, it is decided, when you get to the line, by the line attendant. We didn't have the choice. But, we were a party of three, so beggars can't be choosers. I kinda wanted the outside spot; maybe, it would be better on a not-so-bright day, though. The line for it was moderate. It seems to go fast, the ride, around the Knotts property. I'd do it again. Glad we were able to do it; it's a family-friendly attraction. Maybe hubby would to, if the line was not very long. [Review #498] 2019 Yelp 100 Challenge (158/100) The Butterfield Stagecoach (1: Low Thrill) is somewhat centrally located in Knott's Berry Farm by Ghost Town. Its route runs along the east side of the park, about 1/2 the distance of Calico Railroad, which runs the about 1/2 the park on the west side. 4 large horses pull a stagecoach that seat about 12 passengers, including the drivers. During loading & unloading, the horses sometimes get a little nippy & feisty. Like the railroad, it's a family-friendly ride that's quite long & lulling... so much that my son had taken a nap as we circled the park. You have the option to sit up top but it can get toasty under the sweltering sun in the summer; we prefer to be inside with shade & a gentle breeze. During the fall, to my surprise, M wanted to sit up top. We had a great view of the park & he kept waving to the park goers, probably because they were waving too. =) The line usually runs between 30 - 90 mins. due to the time it takes to walk the route & load/unload passengers; length of time is also based on the number of stagecoaches running (3 max). It's worth the wait if you haven't been on the ride... though I feel bad for the animals, especially during the summer. It's an attraction that fits the Ghost Town/western theme, but I have mixed feelings about it. I feel guilty riding them for pleasure & the amount of stress they endure from the noisy roller coasters; I hope these gorgeous horses receive adequate breaks. Date of visit: August 19, 2017 One of the things that I like about Knott's Berry Farm is that it's consistent with its Western theme, and one result is a stagecoach ride around the park! The Butterfield Stagecoach runs as many as three during the day, with the lines being capped around 6:30 pm, and while the lines do get crowded (we had about an hour wait), at least they moved quickly once the coaches arrived at the station and passengers disembarked and were loaded on. You don't get a choice of seating here; we ended up on top of the coach facing backwards during our ride. But what you do get during the ten-minute ride are some great views of the crowds and the park as your horse-drawn carriage moseys down at a pretty good clip. (Not sure how much horsepower these carriages go at... at four horses per coach, I'm gonna guesstimate 4hp.) The ride may not be that smooth, but surprisingly, we didn't think we were too uncomfortable. And as we were on the roof, we had plenty of people waving to us - but then again, maybe it was because of the giant stuffed Pikachu I was carrying... Of course, the downside of facing backwards on top of a stagecoach is looking down as the horses go down the trail... and seeing their business along the path. I'm not sure how often the stagecoach path is cleaned between trips, but with as much as three coaches pulled by a team of four horses per carriage - thus equaling a total of twelve horses - well, that's a whole lot of horse pucky right there! Even if you get to sit outside of the coach instead of inside, the Butterfield Stagecoach is definitely worth waiting in line for the trip! read more

Today what is the last day I'll ever step foot in Knottsberry farm. My heart hearts for those poor horses pulling tons of weight for 10 straight hours with only up to 5 minutes of rest in between each ride. All of them were dehydrated with tongues sticking out of their mouth, eyes rolled back exhausted walking so slow. One of the leading horses was bleeding from the left nostril while struggling to to stand! How the hell is this actually an attraction? These horses deserve a better life it's inhumane to use them for entertainment purposes. On my way home I was able to read a few articles I found on the internet posted over the last 7 years regarding the treatment of these horses and till this day they are still there working, suffering in silence. read more

Imagine riding across the United States in a wooden carriage for many days without air conditioning and barely any leg room to stretch. During these times, if you can afford a wooden carriage, you are VERY WEALTHY. We ride into history on the Butterfield Stage Coach at Knott's Berry Farm in Buena Park. Located within America's First Theme Park, Knott's Berry Farm near Ghost Town, you will find one of the most classic attraction that is seems archaic to us as we don't often see everyday called the Butterfield Stage Coach. With the thrill of the steel roller coasters, some may say the original wood ride is much better. The Wild West may have come and gone, but it doesn't mean you can't enjoy and appreciate how we got to today's world. Robbers would try to rob the stagecoach of it's valuables or simply people were on a trail to find one of California's Gold. The wait times will vary for the Butterfield Stage Coach as well as how many horses/carriages that are available. I'd say on an average day, the wait would be about 30-45 minutes. Before getting on board, there are rules called, the 1877 Rules for Stage Riders. There are three areas where you can sit: 1) On top facing forward with the Stagecoach driver as a Shotgun Messenger 2) On top facing backwards, where cargo is normally stored 3) Or the interior. The interior is VERY CRAMPED with three rows of seats, but let's say you will be wishing this ride would be over. You can travel around portions of the park and see the entrance to Knott's Berry Farm and the Boardwalk. Wave back if someone waves at you. You are the star of this ride. Now, one of my list things to do is ride the stagecoach during the summer. I am 6'3" and enjoy the comfort of my big truck. In the 1800s or even before, these Stagecoaches were luxuries or as equals to my pickup truck/SUV. Today, we wear jeans/T-shirts. Those days, you wore full suits/dresses for days as you went across territories with the heat. There were no air conditioning. Plus, you would smell the horses excrement. Those horses are constantly at work pulling a heavy wooden vehicle with a horse driver constantly pulling. I am sure those horses are frustrated. They are anxious to get some water in their system. We are very fortunate to live where we are today. A lot of lives were sacrificed to have discovered the rest of the United States of America. We complain that we don't have a car or a "NICE" mode of transportation, but we have roads that have paved the way for us. We would be complaining every second that our feet hurt. Just imagine that the area you live in had no building and it was just dirt/hills/mountains. You've played Oregon Trail. Just don't get a broken axle or have one of your family members get sick or lose a horse. You can restart the computer to play again. This was a one way adventure. This ride has been going on for quite some time. The line moves pretty slow and if it goes out the door, then pretty much you will wait 60 minutes. Each coach sits up to 12 people, I think 2 people up in the front seat and three in the back and then you are swooshed if sitting inside, but you get a feel of what it was like back then. Poor horses are so weak and exhausted from carrying around people everyday. I witnessed one today that looks sick and looks like he or she is going to pass out while workers do nothing. The horse next to this one was trying to lean against him/her knowing there is something wrong. Please stop putting these precious horses through this. read more

Would I rate this as a High Thrill Attraction? No, and neither did the folks at Knotts Berry Farm, but I still think that this more low key ride is definitely worth the wait. Nowadays, amusement park visits for me are all about the high thrill roller coaster rides. I love the ones that corkscrew, go upside down, dangle my legs over the park from dizzying heights, or flip me every which way but loose So it was nice to take a step back and appreciate an old fashioned carriage ride. Yes, you read that correctly. These are actual horse drawn stagecoaches pulled by real live horses, and who doesn't love horses. When I was a girl (lo, these many years ago) I devoured everything horse related; I read every one of the Black Stallion Books, and Marguerite Henry's Ponies of Chincoteague books. I spent summers at horse camp learning to ride and care for horses. In junior high and high school I had a 4H horse, then horses I trained and showed. Yes, I was a typical horse crazy girl, and a little of that love for all things equine still remains, buried waaaaaay down deep in some dark corner of my being. Can you see why this ride called out to me at such a primal level? You wait in line watching the people line in front of you get on each carriage breathing in the earthy sweet smell that seems to follow horses everywhere, and ogling the horses as you wait. When it is FINALLY your turn to board a stagecoach you are given very little choice over where you sit. The choices seem to be up on top facing forward at the front, up on top in the back, or inside. The minimum height requirement for riding unaccompanied by a responsible adult is 48" but as long as you have a tall friend (just who decides what makes an adult "responsible", anyway?) you are all set. I was visiting the park in a group of five, three adults and two kids, so our party was split up; three people were up top and the 12 year old and I were inside. The ride involves about a 10-15 walk around the park pulled in the coach by the horses. Yes, it's just that simple but it is even more than that. It is a connection to the past. The seats are uncomfortable and, if you're sitting inside, you crane your neck to see out the little window. Of You quickly realize this is exactly how people used to travel, for hours and hours and days and days. And if you were 'lucky' enough to get a seat up top you would have been vulnerable to the elements, not to mention there would be little or no room for luggage. It's a sobering realization as you listen to the sound of the hoofbeats and smell the horses and hear the wood of the coach creaking. As you make your circuit around the park, people wave happily at you, mostly the young children and the much older senior citizens (hipsters are much too cool to wave at strangers) and smile happily when you wave back. The small windows provide a certain type of tunnel vision; you can see the people, people EVERYWHERE, and the cutesy Western themed shops of Ghost Town. What you've filtered out is all the high tech stuff, the thrill rides and other recent park updates, allowing you to really soak in the old-timey homespun feel of the less adrenaline inducing attractions in the park. It's a pleasant break from the hustle and bustle of the modern world, and it doesn't last long enough for you to get too saddlesore. So take the kids, bring the whole family and step back into the past, if even just for a moment or two. You'll be glad you did, pardner. read more

This is cute, but boring. It's probably only truly a 3 star ride, but because of the horses I will bump it up a star. It is worth it, IMO, to wait for the first seat. I've only done this ride once because of the wait times. It does NOT open when the rest of the park does. They seem to start around 10:45am, so don't bother rushing there first thing. You get on the stage coach and make a small loop around the park. It's fun for small children to see the horses pulling you around the outer edge of Camp Snoopy. Totally a waste of time...ride shows you nothing but the backside of the park the fences and the line...we stood in line three times because my daughter wanted to ride outside...now I get there stupid policy of choosing your seats but we were first in line for the next ride and these idiots put us inside again...three times??? I have mixed feelings about this ride. As another reviewer pointed out, their seating policy is ridiculous. It almost always ends in disappointment. The seating policy works like this: 1)You don't get to sit where you want; they tell you where you have to sit. If you don't like where they seat you, too bad. 2) If there are only 2 people in your party you are almost guaranteed to be inside the stagecoach. 3) If there are 3 people in your party you have a chance of getting on top, but it's not guaranteed. 4) If there are 4 people in your party, you only have a chance of getting on top if everyone can fit up there. 5) If there are 5 or more people in your party it's dealer's choice, and you are not the dealer. Trust me, I've been on this ride countless times and it usually ends in disappointment. If you only want to ride inside the stagecoach, they'll probably stick you on top. Remember, you don't get to decide where you sit. Management is not going to read this review, and they have no interest in fixing this problem. so scared of getting older...i'm only good at being young! i got to sit in the front!! and the horse farted :( They have carriage rides in knotts berry farm..which i thought was pretty cool...its a small circle ride...doesn't take no more then ten mins to go around...The guy would tell you a little history about knotts or if you have any other questions please do so and just ask! he willing to answer anything!
