I think this is a steakhouse that people keep visiting because of its history in the community, rather than the food and service it provides. We came around 6:30 for our reservation for six, and were sat after a bit of waiting. Took roughly ~10 minutes for a server to greet us, and another five for drinks to come. We finally order, and soups and salads finally start coming out. After the soup/salad arrived, it took another forty five minutes for the steaks to arrive. Overall the food was okay. The soup was the highlight of the show for me- it was packed full of flavor and onions, had a nice crouton in it, and stringy cheese. The salad was good- nothing to write home about. For having "best prime rib in Indy" on the menu, I was not very impressed by it. I have eaten at many high end steakhouses (not trying to brag or root my own horn, rather give perspective), but the prime rib was the chewiest piece of meat I have ate in a while. I cut and cut and cut and cut with my knife and would get no where. I would chew and chew and chew and chew and would get no where. The actual coating the meat was cooked in did have flavor, but I was thoroughly unimpressed by the meat. The service was slow pretty consistently throughout the night. Despite being an older restaurant, it felt clean, but was very noisy. Would not consider it a place to go for a romantic steak dinner. Overall, if someone else was paying, I'd return. But there are other better places in the city to get a better cooked steak in my opinion, especially for the price paid. read more

Wow. Before I get to the food let me just "set the table" on the service. We were seated off the main room at folding tables with tablecloths. Folding tables. Ok. Server came up and took our drink orders. Asked one of our party if she wanted her espresso martini creamy. Our table asked what the server recommended she said she didn't know because she "didn't really care for that" while making a face. That sums up the kind of service. It was the service I would have expected at Cracker Barrel. Rude, rushing us, passing food and drinks down the table like a cafeteria, and incredibly unconcerned with our experience. One of our meals did not come out. Server finally shows up sorting through the tickets. She then tells my husband he got the other person's steak like he snuck into the kitchen and stole it. Stalks off and the new plate comes out about ten minutes later. In the meantime I had ordered the "special filet dinner" which basically meant I got some sauce. I ordered medium and it came out rare. I told the server who seemed super excited the fix the problem (insert sarcastic tone here) and took it back to the kitchen. It was brought back out later without sides or sauce. Just a charred steak on a plate. Finally got my full order everyone else was almost done and I have to say I didn't even know it was possible for a steak to have that much gristle. I brought it home for the dog. Again back to the service. Not one person seemed to care at all that we had so many issues. Never saw a manager. I am writing this as someone who was a server for years and eats at "high end" steakhouses a lot. It was so bad we were looking around for cameras because it seemed like we were being punked. My husband & I came tonight for the first time. He has always passed it while driving for work & wanted to try it. We arrived at 8pm on New Year's Eve, and didn't know we needed reservations due to never being here. The host was amazing & bussed a table for us so we can get seated. Our server was very busy but did a great job as well. The atmosphere is like most steakhouses, wood, neat decor that you'd see in a barn or around cowboys. I thought it was pretty. The music was there but not over abundant where you couldn't hear & the music was good. Now, let's get down to the food, we had the appetizer that was tator tots, these aren't your normal tots, they were huge & magnificent! Very Delicious. Our steak order came with a salad, soup, roll & a side. My husband got the porterhouse steak & he said it was very good, cooked medium rare perfectly, & was well seasoned. The service is very good. We went on a Tuesday. I had the filet and my husband had the surf and turf. The steaks were cooked well. The cook favors the rare side. The lobster was amazing. The bartender was great - we had a cosmo and espresso martini. The onion soup was good. My only complaint really is that the restrooms need to be updated badly. And the soap was out. My husband picked Bynums for his birthday dinner, we have never been here before. We got there about 5:15pm, people were there but still had quite a few empty tables. Our server was a tall man and I don't remember his name. He grabbed our drink and appetizer order. They had coconut shrimp as the special appetizer. We received 6 coconut shrimp and a sauce that was fantastic! Our server brought over some bread and butter which was also very good. My husband ordered a New York strip with baked potato. It also came with onion soup and salad. I ordered the roasted chicken with baked potato, and I also got the onion soup and salad. Our soup came out first and it was very similar to French onion soup except the cheese was on the bottom, very good in my opinion. Our salads arrived and it was a mixed greens salad with onions and tomatoes. Our food arrived and looked really good, I was hungry so I dived in. Hubby said his steak was cooked perfectly. My chicken was slightly crispy on the outside but moist inside, very good! After we finished our food, we asked to see the dessert menu. Good selection of cheese cakes, cakes and cobbler. I know a lot of folks swear by this place, but I can only give it an enthusiastic 'MEH'. I visit occasionally when someone else really wants to come here. The interior is just so gloomy. Not sure if it is supposed to be romantic? If it is, it's missing the point. As others have mentioned the decor is really outdated and the sayings along the walls, well I just don't know what to say there. Usually the onion soup has been great, but during my last visit it was so salty it was barely edible. I did enjoy the Bam Bam Shrimp though. You get 6 with your order and I have to admit they were delicious. I am not much into their steaks, I just find them not worth it. So I ordered the Tenderloin with loaded frites and it was ok. I haven't ate here in a few years because the quality of food was less than desirable, drive by and seen the parking lot pretty packed so thought I give it a shot... the ONLY thing about this experience that warranted 2 stars was the service the 2 women taking care of our table was the highlight... Never been to a place that serves microwaveable Mac and cheese for kids and it was soooo runny more like soup the steaks all came out wrong over cooked and the baked potato seemed to be well over cooked to the point of crispy comes to mind... I really hate to be negative but seems that nothing has changed in the years from the last time I was there I'm just saying beware this is just my experience but for the way they promote their steaks I was looking for something better than what I got good Luck read more

Classic dark moody steak house setting, simple menu with decent service. The bread, soup, and salad served with the entrees were the highlights of the meal. Our entrees, filet and grouper, were just ok. Grouper was cooked to perfection but extremely salty. The filet was cooked to medium but had a very dry exterior. The baked potatoes were great, the crispy butter skin made them extra delicious. Overall the experience was fine but I think it was a touch overpriced for the quality of meat. read more

We have visited Bynum's(both locations) more than I can count. Last weekend we stopped by for dinner and I am not sure what to as going on but the service was not the typical. I hope it was a staff shortage or some other reason and not that it has just gone down hill. We waited forever for drink refills, our waitress was just rude(we have never had her before), the food was ok... but we felt rushed and this was not the typical from our past visits. I ordered a fillet medium but it came out medium rare. The baked potato was hard. My husbands steak was undercooked also but he didn't mind. I was only offered for them to take the steak back to be cooked again, no taking it off the bill even though I told her I wasn't happy and didn't want the steak anymore. I didn't eat any of it. A meat lover's paradise. I felt like I just stepped into a steakhouse in the middle of Texas - not downtown Indy. Every single steak is as big as your head and juicy, cooked to your definition of perfection. Especially the Prime Rib was a fun one - everyone gasped when they saw the massive rib sticking out of the 2 inch thick meat The ribs were perfectly done, easy pull apart with little fat. they have only two BBQ sauce flavors: regular and hot. Both were Servers seemed like they had been there years - making it fun by boxing up our leftovers for us in fun shapes made of tin foil. Kinda the only good way to carry large hunks of meat home! They brought out a birthday surprise for our friend (free of charge)! Drinks were poured heavy and for the amount of food our party received, we got everything really quickly which shocked us. I have pasted this place many times and had no idea what it was. I was looking for a place to eat and decided to take a leap and check this place out. I was very glad that I did. They have a decent sized private parking lot and an adequate sized dining area. There is a full bar with seating and a private room off to the side as well. You will find a few televisions in the dining area near the bar and they have classic soft rock like the Beatles and Phil Collins playing in the background. They have wine, beer, and cocktails for adults to indulge. As far as their menu, of course they have steak, but they also have burgers, salads, chicken, and seafood (including shrimp and lobster). They have lunch special so, please be on the look put for them. I got the Prime Rib, with fries. It took about 10 minutes for me to get my food and it was absolutely delicious. I ordered it medium well and it was cooked to perfection. So tasty and flavorful. I highly recommend. The fries were very good too. Additionally, my meal was very filing. My server was very nice and attentive. I wish I would have gotten her name to give her a shot out. We've been going to Bynum's for many years and many times and have always had very good experiences, food, service and of course the timeless interior. I made Valentines evening reservations and can say I was disappointed in the service and my food. As we walked in, I noticed a Valentines day special. Four of us were seated, we asked for a booth but were told we couldn't have one, OK, your business, we are just the customer. The next group of 4, right behind us, were given a booth, OK, we were kind of perplexed now. OK, back to the service. We were a party of 4 but the table, right next to the bar, was set for 3? As expected it is a busy night, since we've been to Bynums many times, you just expect less than the best service on this night. I wasn't wrong. I'm normally a Ribeye steak person but on this night I wasn't super hungry and we picked the Valentines special. Two 7 oz. Filets with a mushroom reduction sauce, 6 shrimp shared, salad, soup, 1 bar drink each and a piece of cheesecake to share. We were talking and our server walks up to the table, doesn't say her name and her exact words, "Do you want something to drink?" Never did find out her name, not hello, I'm so and so can I take your order, or welcome to Bynums, have you been here before, not, do you have any questions? Nope, OK, we placed our order. The salad is ALWAYS terrific and it was tonight. The onion soup, always very good was too salty tonight. The steaks arrive and they were cooked to perfection. Now this part is on me. I love mushrooms but the mushroom reduction was too sweet for me, way too sweet and the flavor ruined the great Filet, just for me. My wife and the other couple were just fine with it. The cheesecake was terrific and we both left a $30.00 tip each for the $129.00 dinner which is a fair deal. We recently ate here for the first time. This is a long standing Southside of Indianapolis Old School Steak House. The restaurant was very busy with large parties, but we were seated fairly quickly. I WOULD SUGGEST RESERVATIONS. The interior of the restaurant has that old school mom and pop feel with wood everywhere, but I feel like it adds to the ambiance. Our server was really funny and very attentive. My wife ordered a drink from the bar that was very good. We had a "blooming" onion as an appetizer that was better than "the other place". Included with your meal, you will receive a cup of French Onion Soup, a salad and bread. This adds to the value of the overall meal. The broth for the soup was very good. The bread is also very good, and the salad is a salad. I ordered the filet with a baked potato for my meal. It was good, but not great. My wife had the steak and shrimp. She thought her steak was "good" as well. We were there for almost 3 hours for dinner partially due to all the parties. We did enjoy the interaction with our server and the owners father. Our waitresses were amazing and constantly making sure we had everything we needed. However, the filets were not seasoned at all and looked more like hockey pucks instead of the 'hearty filet' we ordered. The steak fries were cold but tasted better once we heated them back up in our air fryer Ambiance: 5/5 Loved how dark it was in there and also all the decor matched perfectly of what you would imagine a steak restaurant would. Drinks:4/5 We ordered the old fashion, which was $13.95. The waitress asked me what bourbon or whiskey I wanted, and I said Jefferson Ocean. When we got our bill, the old fashions were $54 for 2!!! I guess I should have known or asked if there was an upcharge depending on the whiskey but I just assumed the waitress would have told me that. Overall. Good experience. Will we go back? Had lunch today at Bynums to celebrate our 6 year anniversary. I love prime rib and wanted us to have a nice treat.   We arrived around 11:45 and were immediately greeted by a friendly host. She was all smiles and sat us immediately.   Jess, our server was over in less than a minute. She asked if we were celebrating anything and we told her it was our anniversary. The entire time Jess came to our table she was all smiles and cheerful in her word choice. We had our beverages in less than 2 minutes.   We ordered the lunch portion prime rib with extra au jus, two side salads with extra ranch and a cup of the onion soup to split.   Onion soup was brought out in less than 2 minutes. Hot, perfect amount of cheese, and the fresh bread they serve was perfect for dipping. Soup wasn't too salty and was full of delicious flavor. Jess checked back in a minute to make sure it was excellent and was still full of smiles.   Our salads came out a minute after we finished the soup. Extra ranch- cold. Chilled plate. Crispy lettuce, fresh tomatoes and onions.  Absolute perfect sizer to not stuff us yet. Again, Jess checked back after a minute- whole serving many other tables and a large party. Jess clearly knows how to multi task and still maintain a 10/10 attitude.   Here's the best part. Jess recommended the prime rib with garlic butter. I've never heard of this on prime rib and asked if it was good. She said absolutely. It's one of her favorite toppings. We gave it a try. The entire plate was full of prime rib cooked exactly how I ordered- medium. The garlic butter was spread evenly over the entire top. This is easily enough for 2-3 people to share. I couldn't believe the amount of rich flavor the prime rib had. The garlic butter- will be a thing for me going forward. It elevated the flavor to a level I didn't know was possible. Jess, again, checked back a minute later and asked how we liked the prime rib. We told her that the recommendation she made nailed it. I could only eat 1/3rd of my prime rib. Not upset- just means it's going in chili later.   Jess made sure to thank us and asked us not to leave just yet. She surprised us with cheesecake for our anniversary.   This was not just a celebration but a gathering in our neighborhood with an amazing staff. Jess made our day that much more special, and we can't thank her enough. Going forward we will call ahead to make sure she's working and request her. I am confident the staff is just as good but when you get the best, we will want to always be spoiled by sitting in her section.   I know post covid we've heard from friends that the service industry has taken a hit. Jess not only went above and beyond with her character and smiles, but she made the experience that much better by being attentive and making us try something outside our comfort zone. She truly made this the best anniversary lunch for us ever.   One last thing- the ambience. Love the traditional steakhouse look and vibe. Don't get us wrong, we love St.Elmos but Bynums costs a fraction, has service which is better, and more to offer. This is without a doubt the best no frills steakhouse in Indy! It doesn't try and be overly fancy and you can come here dressed casually and still get a great steakhouse experience, which I really appreciated. We tried three appetizers but I can't wait to try them all; we had the onion blossom, voodoo lobster, and potatoes skins and they were all incredible. The potatoes skins are the best I've ever had, they are smothered in cheese. They steaks were on point as well and the desserts we got to go were delicious! Finally got to stop by Bynum's, even if it was just for lunch! Surprised how cheap their lunch menu is. Breaded tenderloin and a side for $13? Not bad. I went with the blackened prime rib which was $19. Came with soup or salad, bread, and a side! The broccoli cheddar soup was phenomenal. Baked potato was cooked great. Interesting spin on a prime rib with the blackening, it was good! Wish they had just put butter and sour cream in my potato instead of giving me 2 single use plastic cups. The service was fast and friendly we ordered cocktail shrimp, 20 Oz lobster tail, prime rib and bone in ribeye as well which come with salad and side with onion soup. Everything was fresh delicious and tasty as can be. The prime rib I ordered medium rare, came perfectly as I like. The onion soup was a too salty to enjoy but it is a come with anyway so doesn't affect my score since it is not what I came for anyway. I came for the meats and they did not skimp the lobster tail was delicious and tender. The lobster just melted in your mouth eith the drip of the butter on side. My daughter, son-in-law, husband and myself were there on Saturday night and we all had to send our steaks back because they weren't cooked right! And when mine came back it had a hair cooked in the garlic butter on my steak! I didn't eat the steak and I felt like I couldn't say anything because when we sent the steaks back the first time the waitress was very irritated with us! Decorated in a way that it could be a casual place or a place for a special get together. The service was excellent. We were there early and there weren't a ton of people there yet so she was always available and came to check on us a number of times. She was very pleasant and did a fantastic job taking care of us and getting us everything we needed. She adjusted the order so that my wife could have it the way she wanted and food came out very quickly. It was an excellent culinary experience. My wife started with shrimp cocktail, which was really good. I had the French onion soup, which was part of my meal and a salad with honey mustard. Both were excellent, my wife absolutely loved the French onion soup as well, and the salad was fresh and had homemade honey mustard dressing. A loaf of crispy on the outside, soft on the inside bread was also placed on the table For the meal I had the barbecue ribs. They were great. The sauce was excellent and the ribs were cooked to perfection. They were falling off the bone. Some of the best I've had. My wife had the smothered tips which had mushrooms and cheese on top of the rib tips and she couldn't stop eating them. On the side, we got baked potatoes and they were very good and had a little garnish of cranberry and pineapple, which was a nice fresh surprise, my wife even got some to bring home. All in all, this is one of the best meals I have had in a long time and I highly recommend anyone who wanted to go to an excellent steakhouse to come here.
