Came here with a friend who had a groupon that was expiring soon, so we decided to try it out. We were really pleasantly surprised. We sat outside which was a nice atmosphere and pretty quiet for Astoria Blvd. We both ordered the Chicken wrapped in Bacon Souvlaki, which was really good! We shared the Seftalia, which was home-made sausage. It was tender and delicious! They gave us some hummus and some sort of eggplant appetizer on the house - which was really nice. Hands down, best gyro I've had. Let's take it from the top. French fries came out first, which would've bothered me on any other occasion since they weren't meant to be an appetizer, but I was so hungry, I didn't care. They were double fried, crisp and delicious. With a little black pepper and some Greek sea salt, they were perfect. A few minutes later, the Greek fries appeared. What are Greek fries? They're French fries topped with feta cheese and oregano. These were phenomenal. I would never have thought to pair these ingredients, but together they formed a little French fry pizza flavor, which I gotta say, is pretty genius. I stayed away from the extra cheesy fries since feta is so strong, and often overwhelming. But when I got the right mix of cheese, oregano, fry and ketchup- it was magical. And then it was gyro time. Where to begin with this little piece of Greek heaven. Let's work from the outside in. The pita bread had been heated up on the grill and was warm and crisp on the edges, yet soft and doughy in the middle. The lettuce and tomato were so fresh and vibrant, they tasted like they had been picked from the backyard earlier in the day. But it's Queens, so that probably didn't happen. The chicken was stripped with the crispiest pieces at the top and the juicier pieces in the middle. In the spirit of full disclosure, those top crispy pieces were a little dry, but everything else was so great, I forgive this misstep. The red onions were expertly mixed in so as to not overpower the other ingredients. And the BZ sauce...oh BZ sauce...why don't they put you in a little bottle and give you to me? According the waiter, the sauce is made of mayo, mustard, lemon and "a lot of other stuff. I don't really know." They do have the best gyros in town. I drive all way from the Bronx just to get gyros here and drive back ( yes, seriously). The platters are great also, very big, sometimes you can't even finish it. We started off the combination appetizer and were annoyed they gave us a double helping of what tasted like mayo (BZ sauce?), without asking, because they ran out of baba ghanoush. I worked with people in Atlanta and they told me that when I said gyro it sounded obscene. Well, whether you call them gyros or "hi-ros" (any Greek person please weigh in on the appropriate pronunciation because being a New Yorker makes you inherently believe that you are right about everything - one of those really annoying things about NYers, no?) these are the real deal. Nothing to speak of when you walk into the place and really with gyros like this it HAS to be in the name, but they are good because it is quality meat, good tzatziki sauce and fresh greens. This place is a complete disappointment. Since I really like exploring authentic ethnic food and I love Greek food, I went all the way to Astoria to try this place out. This is NOT Greek food, had the Gyros platter, no flavor, and the Greeks in Greece would not even eat this. Horrible food. There are better Gyros in Manhattan!!!, Mams Gyros, GRK all in the downtown area, and their prices are even more expensive than the better Manhattan places. What were they thinking? YUM best souvlaki in Astoria, and that's saying a lot! You MUST try the bacon wrapped chicken souvlaki or the spicy feta dip! The chicken is crispy and falls off the skewer and the dip has the perfect feet and coolness. BZ Grill settles my gyro cravings. They have some of the best quality gyros and made from great ingredients. That said, it is kind of pricey for a gyro. I recommend this place for a quick bite if you're taking food home. I've also eaten in the dining room. The service isn't as quick, but the dine in menu is a few cents less than the takeout menu. So, few things about this place: 1. The location is so hidden. It's on the corner of 27th St and Astoria Blvd 2. The place on the inside could use a little cleaning up. One star for having clean silverware 4. I ordered the lunch special. Pork gyro and fries. Whoever said the there is not enough meat in the gyro's - I'm not sure what you were expecting? A roasted pig? There is plenty meat in the gyro and it fills you up. They actually go cheap on the lettuce and veggies. However, the pork was ULTRA crispy (not gyro-like at all) and grizzle at times. I picked out the grizzly pieces and still had enough non-grizzly, hardened from grease, meat to enjoy. My jaw still hurts from the crispiness of it all. 5. I ordered Greek fries, but they brought me regular fries... Not a big deal, they were still good 6. 1.5 stars for the Greek wild cherry juice is DELIC!!! I had to water mine down with some cold water to get rid of the tartness. I would have asked for ice, but the man at the table in front of me asked and they don't have ice... If I was ever passing the store again, I would drop in solely for this drink. Since I can't give this place 2.5 stars, I'll give it 3. I believe everyone deserves a second chance and so, I would like to return to try the Greek fries and the chicken gyros that everyone has been raving about. Tired BZ for the first time last week. The staff is very sweet and accommodating. I order Chicken Slavokis, French fries, and a side order of hummus. The chicken was well cooked through but very plain tasting. They needed a little more flavor. The French fries were great so crispy and crunchy. The hummus was mediocre it tasted like sabra which was disappointing because Greek grills are suppose to have great hummus dip. Overall, the food was decent and super adorable. Great Greek Food and cheap! The Haloumi (firm grilled cheese) sandwich is excellent. Veggie platter is HUGE! and includes falafel, haloumi and many grilled veggies. The pork souvlaki is perfect. The pork is grilled well and seasoned with ??? but it's awesome. Chicken souvlaki was also very good. They have both traditional yougurt sauce and their own BZ sauce. Try the BZ. This place has earned a spot in my regular rotation of places I stuff my face at. Pork platter and falafel platter are my go-to's. The pork is normally a bit crispy and very juicy. I'm pretty sure their fries are sprinkled with crack. If you're going with a friend, order the platters with rice and share the fries. Trust me, you'll want both. The service sucks. This place was awesome. I actually just had leftovers which made me want to write this review lol. So my hubby and I went with a Groupon after reading all the reviews and we were so pleased. The staff was friendly, and we received our food pretty quick. It's the same deal everyone is talking about -- the eggplant spread and humus, and falafel with 2 entrees and 2 glasses of wine. It was so much food!!!! And all of it was delicious. We shared the falafel meal and the veggie meal. I don't know what kind of cheese they grilled in the veggie platter, but it was ridiculously good. I'm sad I forgot to order the feta fries, but I am certainly getting those the next time we go... Because we will be returning. For the average consumer... Every platter is a very generous size. Two of us shared all that food to the point of being stuffed, and had enough for another meal at home. The service is impeccable. Even with a Groupon, you are treated very well. There is an understated confidence that results in not asking you "how is everything" every other second as is the case in other restaurants. That being said, they are very accommodating if you need anything. The appetizers were as good if not even slightly better than the mixed grill.
