It was bustling on Friday evening. We could smell grilled meat from a block away. We checked in with our groupon and was greeted warmly. The wait was about 10 minutes for a table of two. The appetizers came - hummus and falafel. The falafel was one of the better ones I had, crispy on the outside and garlicky and flavorful inside. The hummus is thick and perfect to go with the falafel. Now the star is the meat platter, HUGE, more than enough for two. Perfect for meat lover: Sausages, chicken, pork, lamb - all seasoned really well with great grill flavor. Service was prompt and efficient. I already got another groupon and can't wait to come back. After driving 35+ miles to go back to the spot that makes my favorite gyro and Greek fries, I tell the guys behind the counter how I used to be a regular customer and how much I was looking forward to bringing some of their delicious food home with me....the employees seemed to catch an attitude for some reason and made me wait 40 mins for "well done" pork, just to get home to find it was all fatty and nasty! We love BZ Grill for Gyros but tonight I wanted a bit more of a dinner-y meal so I got a platter. I got the bifteki platter. It has rice, a splash of lettuce, two bifteki, sliced tomato, and pita. No tzatziki. Everything dry. The bikteki (pictured) has no cheese inside it. Flavor is good, but missing that cheesy-ness. However, the biggest disappointment is that for this amount of food, it was $17. That's absurd. You can get food just as good or better, in larger quantities for way less all over Astoria. At $8 their gyros are higher priced but not unreasonable and they're really good. But I'll never get a platter again. This is really $8-$10 worth of food, MAYBE $11-$12. But not $17. I'd say it was good advice, but as good as the meat was, it was bested by everything else about the sandwich, including the crisp pita. So maybe other sandwich is just as good or even better. Between the two options of chicken or pork (surprisingly, no lamb!), the winner for me has got to be the roast pork gyro. Each gyro is made with warm, fluffy pita and is absolutely loaded with porky goodness. Every bite of succulent, rich pork has a nice crispy char. Finished with the requisite lettuce, tomato, red onion, and tzatziki, this overstuffed cone of deliciousness will probably require that you pick up a fork before attempting to use your hands. One massive gyro will only set you back about $8.50, and is of a far better quality than your typical street meat cart. Also worth mentioning: if you're in the mood to be a little decadent, definitely go for the Greek fries. Seasoned with oregano and covered in a shower of feta, the fries are baked until the feta browns. So much flavor in every bite! The fries are $6.22 and the serving is enough for two people to enjoy. I would like to give a special thank you to the owner and the team for my wonderful experience. I was craving for authentic quality Greek cuisine. The Greek food you can actually see people cooking in front of you opposed to the pre-cook, hard to chew platters. I came here with an empty belly and left there with a smile. Someone mistakenly placed an item in the salad I was allergic to, something I politely asked to not have on the salad beforehand. Instead of a defensive reaction, the owner apologized and they made a fresh salad and the owner gave me two Greek yogurts on the house. He may have thought it was a small gesture but to me, great customer service should be recognized. Maybe good customer service adds more seasoning to the food because, the falafel with lemon juice and hummus gave me life. How have I never written a review for BZ Grill after so many years of grabbing lunch or dinner there? This place is the real deal. Excellent food! This is the closest you're gonna get to an authentic Greek gyro from Greece. The pork gyro is delicious. The Greek fries are banging. Their bacon chicken wrapped souvlakia great. I got my coworkers hooked on this place too. They love it! Service is great, can be a little slow at times because it can get insanely busy and the place isn't that big, but they try to be as accommodating as possible. I would have given this place 5 stars, but knocked a star off because the last couple of times I've been there they didn't fully cook the bacon on the bacon wrap skewers and the bacon was pretty fatty. So although still very tasty paired with their BZ grill sauce, I just couldn't stomach all that fat. read more

Well it might be the best chicken gyro I've ever had this side of some doner kebabs in Munich. The chicken was just so well seasoned and so crispy. Most chicken gyro/shawarma you get doesn't really have any crispy bits and BZ's is like all crispy bits. Also, I super approve of how they put the tzaziki in between the pita and the chicken and not on top of the whole thing (or just on top on the unwrapped side like the worst offenders). This distributes yogurt sauce evenly with each bite. Can't wait to go back and try the two sausages they have which I've never heard of. read more

Oh my god delicious. BZ Grill was the best part of my Sunday afternoon filled with apartment hunting and Ikea. After touring about 20 apartments in a building we weren't interested in, we were frustrated and famished so I used my trusty Yelp app to find some good Greek eats and it did not fail. The space inside BK Grill was small and filled with a few families with young kids. We both took about 5 minutes with the menu - it's not extremely extensive, and ordered the chicken gyro and it was OFF THE CHAIN. Packed with flavor and delicious, juicy chicken. Both dark and light meat but not fatty at all. Cool crisp veggies and delectable white sauce, I highly recommend ordering the chicken gyro. So. Much. Food. It's hard to see how anybody can have less than a 4 star experience here. The missus and I had the mixed grill platter for 2 which is big enough for 3 people and allowed me to sample most of their meats. Their sausages were impressive if not stellar. We started with some hummus, pita and falafel. I thought the hummus was a little dry and the falafel didn't have the super crispy shell to compliment the soft filling - but the flavors were good and they were still enjoyable. The mixed grill platter looked intimidating upon arrival. The portion size was huge and I wasn't sure where to even begin. My favorite was the bifteki gemista, a perfect mix of lean & fat ground beef with cheese stuffing that just exploded with flavors in my mouth. The seftalia, which is a softer Cypriot sausage, had very good flavors too. The harder suasage, the loukaniko, was not bad either, I could taste the fennel even if the meat itself didn't carry as much flavor as the other two. Of the two gyros, the pork was the undisputed winner for me. Some of the thinner slices looked, felt and tasted like bacon on steroids - and that's no bad thing. In comparison, the chicken was pretty bland. We opted for fries with our platter which was perfectly crispy and it also came with pita, yogurt, tzatziki, onions, tomatoes and lettuce. Our Groupon deal made our meal even cheaper than it already was. Although the service was suspect and the decor of the place won't get them on the cover of Food & Wine magazine, the value was unbeatable. I've walked by here a few times on the way to the post office and every time I see that juicy ass meat rotating in the window it makes me want to stop in. What's prevented me each time is that darned sign that says "Best Gyros in New York". I'm usually not overly impressed with places that self brag especially when they don't need to. When our waiter came over, I mentioned that I had a Groupon. He literally sighed and paused before taking our order. We used the Groupon and added a gyro and halloumi appetizer. The food came out pretty quick and it was really tasty. The mixed grill platter could have fed all 4 of us. But after the food came, no one bothered to check on us. I understand this isn't fine dining, but at least come over to see if everything is ok. The waiter was too busy talking to the non Groupon using diners. It even took 20 minutes to get the check. We couldn't get out of there fast enough! The service is awful! What irks me the most is that the waiter looked over to our table to make sure we left a tip. I wish we didn't. I don't understand why a business bothers putting out Groupons if they're going to give attitude about using it. It's a shame that the Groupon is for dine in only, because I would've bought more. I'm glad I stopped in! The first thing you're hit with is the ambiance. Laid back, no frills, plastic cover over the table cloth but in a charming kind of way type of place. It's very home-y feeling, and I can't knock them for it! They have a great lunch special for $10: chicken or pork gyro, fries, and a drink. I'm more of a lamb gyro guy, but I settled for the pork and was not one bit disappointed. The pita was stuffed to the brim with pork, and it was full of flavor. The fries were my favorite kind -- the double fried crispy ones. So good. The service was very good as well. Took a crew of 5 to eat here the other day and I was embarrassed at the quality of the food and service after talking up this place to my friends. The Pork Gyro was dry and not very tasty. What the heck happened here people? That was not the worse of it though. Our server was inattentive which was quite annoying. Additionally, he waited until we were ready to pay to let us know that the credit card machine was down. I know this is a common thing among waiters who want their tip right away instead of waiting and he was lucky that (1) I had cash to cover the dinner and (2) I did not listen to my friends who suggested that I should not tip him.
