Very solid diner with a great selection of breakfast items! No bells and whistles, just straight forward food.

Breakfast at Evergreen Inn…read more This morning, in the spirit of liberty and breakfast carbs, I ventured out to the Evergreen Inn to celebrate the Fourth with a fork. Their specials board boasted a short stack paired with a choice of meat--how could I resist? I threw in a couple of scrambled eggs to round things out and waited for the fireworks (on my plate, that is). The pancakes arrived looking like golden perfection--fluffy, inviting, ready to be drenched. Unfortunately, the syrup rations were a bit...conservative. I wouldn't say stingy, but let's just say I had to request two more cups to give those cakes the celebration they deserved. The eggs? Fine. Serviceable. I suspect they started life in a carton, already liquefied and waiting for their destiny. The sausages were decent, the chocolate milk was nostalgic in all the right ways, and the cutlery had clearly survived a few wars of its own. And the ketchup--oh, the ketchup. A bottle proudly labeled "Fancy" does not make it so. If someone brought that stuff to a backyard BBQ, I'd stage a condiment coup and return with a bottle of Heinz. Now, let's talk ambiance. The place is *kind of* clean--clean-adjacent, clean-curious, but not quite committed to the title. Still, nothing alarming, just...comfortably lived-in. What it lacked in polish, the staff made up for in personality. The lone waitress holding down the fort was kind, attentive, and clearly doing the job of three people. Any service slip-ups? Forgiven on the spot. The bill came in a little higher than anticipated, especially for a daily special. But with few breakfast contenders in the area, Evergreen Inn knows it has the home-field advantage--and it's charging rent. Still, the pancakes alone were worth the visit. Just bring your own syrup--and maybe your own ketchup, too.

First time I had a dish called The Cook's Breakfast which was biscuits and gravy topped with corned beef hash , cheese and two eggs. Came back two days later with our friends and got the lemon blueberry French toast and some eggs with a side of bacon. Everything was perfectly cooked both times. The server was absolutely amazing as well!! Will definitely come here every time I'm in Rockford.

I also liked the mismatched mugs. They seemed seriously understaffed, and service was very slow. We ordered drinks, and waited long enough for someone to come back to take our food order that we were starting to wonder if they thought we were only getting drinks. There was another long wait for our food. When it arrived, it arrived in batches. One person ordered three tacos, but the order was entered wrong, so they only got one to start, and they had to wait quite a while for the other two. The food was good overall, but the portions were quite small. I did like the Bourbon Street French toast, particularly the caramel sauce. It could have used more bananas though. The fried pickles were good, as were the spicy mozzarella sticks. The steak omelet's sauce was odd. The nachos were good. The coffee and lattes were good. The regular orange juice had less juice than one poured for our toddler. Overall it was alright, but I don't know that I'd go back.

The Kevin Bacon LT was one of their many varieties of avocado toast which tasted very fresh and clean. Came in on a Sunday morning in August and the wait was 20 minutes, which is normally not an issue but the restaurant was only about 75% full. Service was a little slow but did not alter our positive experience. We will definitely be coming back to try more things on the menu.

After church this morning, I decided to treat myself to breakfast at the Halfway Diner, a charming…read morelittle spot tucked along 14 Mile Road (M-57), right about halfway between Rockford and Greenville, Michigan. This classic hometown diner delivers that cozy, down-home vibe with friendly service, a clean and welcoming interior, and a menu packed with hearty American comfort classics--all-day breakfast included. I went straight for the Country Sausage Omelette, a generous creation made with three fresh farm eggs, stuffed with savory country sausage, hash browns, and smothered in rich sausage gravy. It was everything I crave in a breakfast plate--scrambled eggs, breakfast meat, potatoes, and that creamy gravy--all conveniently wrapped up in one neat, delicious package. The flavors were spot-on: hearty, comforting, and perfectly seasoned with a generous sprinkle of black pepper on top. For an extra touch of sweetness, I paired it with raisin toast slathered in their homemade strawberry jam--tangy, bright, and just the right contrast to the savory omelette. No breakfast feels complete without my go-to drink: a tall glass of chocolate milk. This one stood out--it had that rich, old-school taste of real chocolate syrup mixed into fresh milk, far more flavorful than the standard pre-made versions you often get. Pure indulgence in a glass. The service was warm and attentive, even during what seemed like a busy post-church rush. The place is spotless, with plenty of seating in a somewhat bustling layout (think classic diner charm with 4-top tables). One note: larger groups might need to split across tables with an aisle in between, as seating isn't always easy to configure for big parties. Payment happens right at the table, which keeps things straightforward. One small observation about the menu--while there are plenty of creative omelette options and specials (like ham and eggs or corned beef hash), classic combinations like eggs with bacon or sausage links alongside potatoes don't appear as standalone items the way they do at some places. That said, the Country Sausage Omelette more than made up for it by hitting all those familiar notes in one satisfying dish. Overall, the Halfway Diner is a solid, feel-good spot for a reliable, no-fuss breakfast. Nothing halfway about the portions or the quality--definitely worth the drive if you're in the Rockford-Greenville area looking for authentic diner fare. I'll be back!
