I scheduled an…read moreappointment to replace a kitchen faucet and three shut-off valves; however, I was informed that an estimate could not be provided without an on-site visit. A $99 service call fee was disclosed in advance. Despite being a relatively simple job, the total cost exceeded $1,900. After researching the cost of the faucet from their local supplier, I discovered that the faucet retailed for $280, yet I was charged $1,142 for the faucet and installation. Replacing three shut-off valves was billed at $673. In total, an estimated $450 in parts resulted in $1,350 in labor for what was less than a 3-hour job. I reached out to management to better understand the significant upcharge and was told the pricing reflects a two-year company warranty. That explanation raised more questions, given the faucet manufacturer already provides a lifetime warranty on parts and finishes for residential users, covering defects in material and workmanship for as long as the original purchaser owns their home. I was also told the shut-off valves were not expected to fail within their two-year warranty. The remaining justification was that G&C hires experienced plumbers who provide a professional and courteous customer experience. Is this not what a consumer should expect?! Then I was informed that G&C provides a complete benefit package for their employees and that plumbers are just expensive. Overall, while the work was completed, the pricing felt significantly out of line with actual cost of parts, scope, and duration of the job.

The NSTAR on-call emergency tech came out right away (which was great) and fixed the NSTAR pipe. However, he could not work on the pipe inside OUR house that connected to it, so we had to have the gas shut off, amd were told to call a plumber ASAP. Immediately, called the only other plumber we had used in the past, but could not reach anyone and there was no answering service. We called a 2nd plumber (who had great Yelp reviews), but no one answered, and there was no answering service. Finally, we called Paul Lessard Plumbing and Heating in Natick. Although he had one bad Yelp review from " Mike M." who was (irrationally) mad because he couldn't get a quote over the phone for a job sight-unseen (?!?), we were desperate, as the NSTAR guy said we had only enough hot water in the tank for two showers the next morning (a workday). So we called Paul Lessard... and I am very glad we did! Despite what the negative reviewer had written, Paul could not have been more pleasant or accommodating, He answered right away (despite it being 10:00 p.m.) and he agreed to come over first thing in the morning at 8:00 ("right after [his] first cup of coffee!") True to his word, he was at our door at 8:00 sharp, and was super helpful and thorough. He inspected the entire house and not only fixed the minor leak at the meter, but he also tightened up a loose bracket that was causing our pipes to rattle, and he replaced the water connector on the new fridge. Paul was extremely kind, very thorough and expert at his work. He made all of the necessary arrangements to obtain the permits needed with the Town, and he came back the next day with the inspector, who approved the work without a hitch. It could not have been more painless, and his pricing was very fair. [Again, contrary to the negative reviewer's comment, no "destination charge" or "service call" charge was discussed or added to the bill.] As great as Yelp can be, sometimes the reviews and averages are deceptive and skewed by one or two unfair and mean-spirited review! So, please don't be dissuaded from calling Paul Lessard Plumbing because of that one bad Yelp review. It is not representative of our experience at all. In fact, I can say without any hesitation that, should I have any more plumbing issues in the future, I will call Paul Lessard first!

Not only would he not give me a ballpark quote over the phone, but he started to argue with me about how he only does "service calls" at a minimum rate and why that is somehow the preferred method of billing. I asked, "Would you prefer to come to the house to give me an estimate?" He mumbled some incoherent reply about charging me a "destination charge" just to take a look. This guy doesn't seem to understand that calling around for a price is normal. I'm sure he would rather have potential customers blindly pick someone and pay whatever they happen to charge. Too bad.

Others even wanted to come by and charge me to look at the job to quote me (which they said the fee would be waived if I used them for the job after..but seriously?). Mark responded to call him and leave him a voicemail explaining I had contacted him via a message and he would call me back. He called back within 10 minutes of me leaving the message and spoke to me on the phone. He thanked me for the detailed pictures and asked if I was handy at all as this was a very simple job and he didnt want me to pay a large sum for such a simple job. He said he would come if I still wanted him to but explained everything I would have to do and where to go get the parts. He even said if I get stuck I can call him to come over. The part was cheap around 20 dollars and the work involved seems super simple (I watched some videos on youtube on how to do this). I havent fixed it yet as I am waiting for the part but i am confident now thanks to his information and knowing I can call him if I need him to come for the job. Its hard to find good contractors for work such as this and I am keeping his number for any future jobs.

He just recently installed the final touch for a whole home portable backup generator at my home, a new 3/4in gas line basement run to supply the generator (or maybe a deck grill someday), the inspector was very accomodating and approved the work quickly! He has also previously helped with regular maintenance like water heater anode rod replacement and a few gate to ball valve replacements for leaky or seized water valves. Apparently it's "unusual" here in MA to have whole home portable backup power (Costco bargain!), everyone is told a $15k concrete slab generator is the minimum, at least, that is what Castle Electric said to me! Do it yourself for a 1/3rd of the cost with Marks help and skip the upselling from the "other" options out there!

The workers who did the installation were very nice and professional, and I paid $175 for the installation. About a month or so later, the plastic sprayer part began sticking and would stay on. The hose itself was fine. One day I noticed a Cullen Plumbing van at my condo complex and saw that they were already doing work in my building. I left a message explaining the problem and said that if they happened to have time to look at it while they were already there, that would be great, but that it was not an emergency and they could come whenever it was convenient. Marc stopped by my unit that same day and agreed that the plastic sprayer part was not working properly. He asked whether Cullen had purchased the faucet or whether I had. I honestly could not remember at the time because I had been hospitalized with sepsis in December, which had significantly affected my memory, among other things. Marc replaced only the plastic sprayer part. There was no hose replacement, and the part took just a few minutes to swap out. I did not receive a bill at the time. A few months later, while preparing to sell my condo, I was going through my Home Depot account and discovered that I had, in fact, purchased the faucet myself. I wanted to do the right thing, so I contacted Marc and let him know that I had purchased it and told him he should send me a bill for replacing the sprayer part. Imagine my surprise when I received an invoice for $190 -- more than I had originally paid for the entire faucet installation -- for replacing a simple plastic sprayer part that took only minutes, especially since Cullen was already working in my building that day. I had no problem paying a fair and reasonable amount for the part and Marc's time. In fact, I was the one who reached out months later to make sure I paid for it. But $190 for this particular repair feels excessive and, unfortunately, like a quick money grab after I tried to do the honest thing. I'm disappointed because my original experience with the workers was positive. Cullen Plumbing also does a lot of work at the new community I've moved to, but fortunately I've since received a referral to another plumber whom I'll be using in the future.
