Reading the other comments below I agreed with them all, good and bad. That said this isn't a 5 star fine dining restaurant, it's a bar! So it's on par with bar service and food. Nothing more, nothing less. The outside seating makes this a nice spot when the weather is nice. The staff is always friendly and cool. Other's in the neighborhood have told me the food quality or old cook isn't around anymore so it's no longer a secret spot for good food. But again it's a bar and has bar food so is good enough for what it is. I've yet to see it really busy like it used to be. Hope it's not trending down. Great happy hour deals, excellent service, and pinball in the back! What more can you ask for? I had a couple of drinks (cider and wine options were nice) and some delicious brussel sprouts - and was even able to park in the nice huge row of bike racks out front. I'm looking forward to going back so I can try some of the other happy hour food options - they all looked awesome. Biking home was another matter... all uphill. There's nothing like an hour of pinball to soothe a child of the 80's soul. I came to C Bar solely for their pinball backroom. They have about 15 games, and on a late Saturday afternoon, the space was moderately populated. They have an ATM on the bar side if you need cash, and a quarter machine on the game side, if you need change. Most games cost 50 cents a play, with some of the older machines at 25 cents. I am actually quite bad at most games, but I took my losses in a good natured way, and tried not to get too intimidated by the Portland pinball yogis that seemed to be wracking up millions of points around me. The Spider Man machine does this funky vibrating thing when you're scoring well, and there's also a storm-themed game that has actual fans that blow on you when you've gotten to a certain level. It's refreshing to do game activities like this that don't involve swiping screens or staring at a TV. Thanks for maintaining your pinball room, C Bar! read more

But still, this is a great low key place. While they don't have a formal happy hour, they offer many items as small or large plates. It feels like happy hour pricing without any of the restrictions. A few of my favorite things... -- Carpano Manhattan -- hummus plate -- gnocchi -- sliders (5 types) - I really enjoyed the Painted Hills beef with caramelized onions and BBQ pork with spicy slaw. All of the food is simple and well made. I appreciate that the entire experience is casual and straight forward. It reminds me most of the Slingshot Lounge over on SE Foster. The quality of the food is a pleasant surprise at both places. Service has always been good, but I've also been in the company of regulars, so that probably factors into the equation. But maybe not. I think "Southeast Portland's Most Casual Corner" is just that good. After many visits in one month's sitting, this place is certainly one of my favorite neighborhood bars to venture. The food, drinks, and service excel in my book . Every time I have visited, our group always get the same table. Most of my visits I usually get the tall glass of homemade raspberry lemonade cocktail. After one drink, I get a nice buzz for the rest of the evening. The small bites portion are great to share amongst folk or just be a little selfish and keep to yourself. Mac and cheese is addicting with their ooey gooey beer cheese sauce and tender pasta. You can even get the beer cheese sauce as a dip on the side if you like. The Poutine has various toppings such as collard greens and seasoned gravy to keep ya coming back for more. The fried butternut squash is probably the best fried concoction I have had in a long time. The main plates will certainly fill ya up. I had the C-Burger for my first visit and added creamy chevre and roasted jalapenos for a small added charge. It certainly paid off because that burger was mostly gone in minutes. Whenever a place uses Painted Hills beef, I'm a happy camper and will leave satisfied. The jalapenos give the burger a nice added spice and heat as the chevre leaves a cooling effect after each bite. The braised pork with the provolone cheese and grilled focacia bread is also highly recommended. The melted cheese certainly holds the sandwich together. Fries are delicious; crisp, herbly seasoned, not greasy, addicting as hell. Green salad also compliments well with the main dish. Service is great and they don't bat an eye when the group wants to split the check up. The bartenders are super friendly and make sure the group is taken care of. We are not hipsters and though I don't mind hipsters, but I don't appreciate getting treated differently. First of all, we sat for 15-20 minutes before even being acknowledged. Hidden gem? Hit this place up brunch. Great food options! And great service! I tend to stick staple food items when trying a new place, such as chicken fried steak or eggs Benedict to gauge if I'll return to try something different. I was very tempted by a number of their mouth watering dishes such as their hash with kielbasa (which my friend got and was really good) or the breakfast poutine. Long story short, I'll be back. Had the chicken fried steak with over easy eggs. Highlight was the home fries. Tender taters with a perfect crisp to them. The chicken fried steak was also very tender and a nice flaky crust - buttermilk?? The herb sausage gravy was good, could used some hot sauce to liven it up a bit, But very creamy. Eggs fluffy and perfectly runny yolks. Mimosa in a pint glass = score. Great service = schwing! They also had a good beer tap list and if you're into pinball, check this place out! I might have to go back, I feel bad for this horrible review, but at that moment. I definitely was not impressed. I wasn't really feeling the vibe of this place. There were people of all ages, so I didn't feel as if we were the oldest ones at the bar. We got our beers, and played a little pinball. Then sat at a booth, and got some menus. We got the fried chicken, as noted in the reviews. It was the worst fried chicken, I've ever had in my life. I am not sure, if one could even call it fried chicken. The breading fell off of the top of the fried chicken, and the bottom didn't even have any breading. It was weird. I'd give this place a second chance. What am I supposed to say about my favorite neighborhood bar? Within just a couple blocks of my abode, this is easily my favorite, most frequented watering hole. Their drinks are great, the staff is really friendly, the food is particularly tasty, and there's always plenty going on. For a neighborhood bar, it's busy. There are plenty of regulars, both locals from the Ivanhood and visitors from afar. Beer-lovers will enjoy this place, as well. Last year, they expanded their beer selection to 17 taps, and they get some really amazing brews here from time to time. My 5 stars is based off of the amazing, delicious, best brunch I have maybe ever eaten. My boyfriend and I both agreed that this was possibly the best brunch we have ever had, and we had just eaten at Broder Nord the weekend before...... and yes, it was better than that. I had The Woodsmen and ate the entire plate (I was so full I wanted to die, but I just could not. stop. eating. it.). My boyfriend had the bacon potato cakes and they were just too ridiculously good. I had a Bloody Mary that was really good (house made pickled veggies). This made me very happy since the day before I had the world's worst Bloody Mary (I'm talking to you Blitz 21) and had to send it packing! Ugh. So gross. Oh how I loath to write reviews on my truly favorite places knowing that soon I will have to find a new one. Regardless, this place is too totally awesome not to disclose, and they deserve all of the praise that they get. Years ago I started going to C-Bar because they're right next door to my favorite sushi restaurants, Yoko's. Back then the food was average, but the place was cool and the plethora of pinball and other games made it one of the best pre-funk rituals in Portland. It had just the right amount of dive to make it attractive to alcoholics, but hipster enough that your girl wouldn't mind being seen there with you. Fast forward to today. A revised beer menu offers a very nice assortment of microbrew favorites and their food is now the epitome of what every bar should serve. All of the food is from scratch and de-lish. And another little secret - they're open for brunch on weekends. It's smack your mama good. Yup, I said it. SMACK YOUR MAMA GOOD! Me and my girlfriend selected this place as she likes to smoke and I don't. Thus, whenever we get together she tries to select a spot that has outdoor seating. We picked the one warm day we've had thus far and sat out back. We went in to order some drinks and a pizza. They have a great menu I was was musing between the veggie pizza and the hummus plate. I settled on the veggie pie but all the other orders that came out of the kitchen for other tables, nachos, etc. Looked great. A real relaxed atmosphere and very low key. I enjoyed it. read more

They try and cater to everyone by offering a little of everything, but the cider/wine/GF taps end up taking away too much of the beer selection. Lesson learned-- if you want to be entirely disrespected by a bartender that does not know what they are doing, this is the spot for that. I ordered a tequila sour and was completely made fun of by the bartender for calling it a tequila sour instead of ordering a margarita without salt... even though they are completely different things. She was extremely condescending and even said to me (after noticing that I was just 6 months past my 21st birthday on my ID) "Aw, you're so pure, tequila sour is not a real drink." What?? OK this place leaves me confused and don't know what to do....so I'm going to try and be neutral about it 5 stars for the service, 4 for food, absolutely excellent services. Can't ask for anything better. The waitress spent 20 min just explaining the menu to us and she smiled genuinely the entire time! She must've been on Miss America or something... Mac & Cheese, tasted like they flavored it with beer. Pork pulled...oh wow!!! Sliders...even better! BBQ sandwich...drool... C bar what happened to you?!? This place used to be great but holy shit the quality of food has really dropped. I recently went for brunch and oof it was not edible. Oddly what we were served looks nothing like pictures from the other reviews. The biscuits were dense, greasy and dark brown. The fried chicken was beyond dry, like wildly over cooked dry, devoid of any degree of moisture. We could not eat it. We had a side of scrambled eggs as well. Seems easy enough right? but it was as if someone left the eggs in a pan and forgot about them. It was like a weird burnt omelet egg disc that they put on the plate. I'm not joking it was a single large circle of burned egg. I realize this might sound like an exaggeration but it was absurdly bad. Its not like I was expecting gourmet quality or anything. I get its a dive bar and totally love dive bar food but this was kind of like bad hospital food. I rarely post reviews but the fact that meal cost anything let alone $16 was fucking criminal. I can't believe I didn't take a picture! How the person who cooked it could let that leave the kitchen is wild. It was really disappointing because we used to go here all the time. So I have actually coming here for years, there are many good things I can say...where to start The staff here is amazing!!! They are ALWAYS friendly, if you are meeting them for the first time or they are handing you your favorite beer before even asking! They also have amazing taste in music...it's usually one of their I-pods playing. I took a friend there yesterday for the first time and she was impressed. They have two areas to sit outside.....out front or in the back. We had the back area to ourselves...I was surprised considering what a lovely day it was! We had just a little snack, the Coconut Shrimp...very tasty, but I have sampled the menu quite extensively and it's always good. Nice neighborhood bar to get good grub. We've been here more than 3 times. I like their rotating beer/cider/wine list. Right now they have a nice tart cranberry cider. We like the burgers and Mac & cheese. The Mac & cheese is creamy and comforting. Adding the bacon lardons is a must. If meat isn't your thing, you can also get the vegan option. One thing I'm bummed about is that they turfed their veggie burger!!! It was one of the best veggie burgers around. Hopefully they bring it back. If you're vegan, this place has multiple options for you. The bar is comfy, but some of the seats need to be recovered. The Staff is very chill. This place has changed. I've been coming to C-Bar since it opened about 6 or 7 years ago, and although the food is still good the service has progressively gotten worse. It's occasionally been surly but now it's definitely crossed the line to rude and I just can't do it anymore. The last 3 visits have all been pretty bad; this last time there was no acknowledgement for ten minutes even with an empty bar. When it came time to order I looked over the menu and said I'd like to try an ale, but instead of offering options the server curtly says "k" and quickly pours me a very light beer, setting it down in front of me as she walks away. Without drinking it I ask if this is an ale and she replies "no it's a lager we don't really do ales here." I reply that I would have liked to have had the option to know what I was getting as I'm not in the mood for a lager, and she scolds me for not choosing specifically from the menu. At C-Bar it must be wrong to ask for an opinion when navigating their many rotating taps. More rude defensiveness ensues, so I calmly say that I think it's best if I just move along. Walking home, I can't help but feel sad about losing this neighborhood joint so I decide to give them a call - not to rant, not to complain - I just want to talk to somebody in charge before I completely give up on this place. I just want to know what has happened here, what is their angle. Can you guess who answers the phone and is the manager? Yup, the rudest server in southeast Portland. The conversation wasn't intense and it didn't last long (she hung up on me) but it makes sense - if she is now running the business no wonder C-Bar's vibe is dead. read more

I've been to C Bar ever since they opened as I live in the neighborhood and love them. Always had great experiences until I took my sister out for her birthday yesterday. I've been out to eat a total of 3x now since COVID and C Bar was my 4th. Every place I have been to expects the customers to sit themselves outside and order online from the table. As soon as we sat down a tall blond server came up to let us know we did not follow procedures- meaning to go inside and check in first. There were no directions on the table for any procedures and why would anyone assume to go inside during COVID. We hadn't time to actually consider any procedures as we had only been there 5 min at the most at that point. Long story short, she continued to be rude throughout our experience, intentionally forgot to bring my coffee , and then felt the need to school us at the end about how to do it correctly next time. There were only a few other tables and it wasn't busy after a long wait I found I asked and was told "oh ya you have to order everything from the bar". We went to this lovely little bar and were blown away with the wonderful service from Betty (our bartender/waitress) as well as the fantastic chicken wings, brussel sprouts, house pretzel and fried chicken sandwich.
