Laughing in our faces because they were skipping our songs. We gave them $5 to turn up the volume as a tip, respectfully. This would be a 5 because I love the Friday night bartender and cheap drinks but I witnessed Sally tell a paying customer to leave the premises because the paying customer she "knew" as a regular made a second hand complaint that someone was being too loud. First of all, she's been inside the ENTIRE TIME so how can she say really say that this guy was loud. We are sitting outside for crying out loud and have you tried conversating when the bus stops in front of the restaurant? It's near impossible to hear the other person without raising your voice. I thought Sally, if that is even her real name, would at least give this guy the benefit of the doubt. Just because this guy doesn't regularly show up on YOUR shift doesn't mean he's not a regular. I've seen him on Friday nights and there's never been an issue. If your reason to kick someone, a paying customer, out of the bar you work at is that another paying customer (that is a regular on your shift) complained about voice volume then you better check yourself. I mean W T F. I guarantee you that had that man been a woman, voice volume would not have been an issue. The drinks are cheap and good. The food is okay. Nothing to write home about and they serve breakfast all day. I love that. Skip Tuesdays and Sally altogether but give love to the Friday night bartenders. They are dope guys. Tom's is where my husband likes to go to have a beer with friends and watch basketball, so when decided he wanted to have his 40th birthday party there, I was skeptical that the non-sports people among us would enjoy it. This is where the real people go in Portland. It's not pretentious, there are lots of fun things to do and the food is not weird. The people who work there are nice but not the phoney looking for a bigger tip nice like you see at chain restaurants. The other customers were nice also, acted like neighbors. Despite my 5 star rating, I have to preface this review by saying I had the most embarrassing night of my life at Tom's, though that was through no fault of the establishment or staff. It was purely due to my own gullibility and a few mean friends. I had agreed to meet a few of my buddies at Tom's the other night, and as usual, I was the first one there. Quick backstory - my friends and I have a running competition on who has the biggest you-know-what, and they had told me that Tom's had a nightly "game" where who ever has the biggest you-know-what, gets to drink for free for the night. Based on previous rounds of our own "game", I knew that my friend Darius was packing a hog, so I decided to try my luck before the rest of my group arrived, and take advantage of my Italian genes. I coyly asked the bartenders about this competition and I was met with a stunned look of confusion, hastely followed by laughter. At first I didn't know why they were laughing, and so with laughter being infectious and all... I started laughing too. Once the bartenders and I collected ourselves they asked what I wanted. I asked them about how the judging works, like, if someone measured all the guys attempting the competition and had something similar to a score board. That's when the tone took a turn, and the male bartender told me to drop it, and that I was making his female co-worker uncomfortable. Being my naive self, I at first thought that my friends mixed up the bar where this free drinks thing was going down. I explained myself to the bartender and insisted that I meant absolutely no offense. Once I filled him in on what my friends told me, he said that my buds were clearly pulling a prank on me. Then it started to make sense. I apologized and went red in the face, but the bartender was understanding and felt bad for me. I ordered a tequila and Coke and when I went to pay for it I realized I didn't have any cash on me. The worst feeling ever. And he had already made my drink. I told him that I left my card at home but since I only live a few blocks away I said I'd run back and grab it and tip him a hefty sum because of everything that happened. On my walk home though, I received an Instagram notification on my phone because I was tagged in a post. It was Darius, and he had posted a photo of himself and my other friends at Por Que No, enjoying tacos, margaritas, and smiling. I felt pretty bad after that, and decided to just stay at home once I got back. I felt awful considering the generous bartender at Tom's had already poured my drink, but I was just feeling pretty sad. On the plus side though, I saw a dog when I was walking home. read more

I live close to the Reel but prefers Toms because of the large amount of space and they have more video poker machines. Creepy/scary karaoke host. Smug, rude and drunk bartender(s). This is kind of a mixed review because myself and a large group of friends used to come here all the time. In retrospect there was NOTHING special about the bar and no real reason we kept returning other than out of habit. The karaoke host was creepy as hell. Literally never smiled once and always looked like he was on the verge of going postal and would get so mad that he would scream at people at the top of his lungs. Super weird and even a little frightening for some of us. There is one bartender inparticular there that is super smug and always rude. He tries to act like he's our friend but at the same time is a sarcastic jerk. I chose that place to have my birthday last year and at the end of night was very disrespected after bringing in hundreds of dollars in one night. I could have celebrated my birthday anywhere. Our last hoorah there was New Years Eve (again, could have gone ANYWHERE else) and the bartender was drunk. Not just a little drunk, faded. Very drunk. On top of that SHE was very rude and wrote on my I.D. permanently which I still get crap for every time I use my I.D. Her whole attitude was as if she was mad she had to work New Years Eve and said "screw this place." I just recently had my birthday where again my group of friends spent hundreds of dollars and tipped extremely well at obviously a different bar which just reminded I needed to do this yelp. Lol.
