Met here for a friends birthday celebration on 7/1/11. Our waiter was the nicest most informative I've ever experienced in Forest Hills. Not a bad looking group of employees as a whole either. He knew the entire menu - inside out - and didn't get annoyed when asked to repeat the days specials. We started with Mojitos (DELICIOUS) and Sangria (very good). The coconut rice was a pleasant surprise on the menu - I would expect it in a Caribbean restaurant. I had the jerk chicken which was fabulous. We declined dessert because we were absolutely stuffed - but after overhearing it was a birthday celebration - they brought a Flan for the birthday girl anyway. Nice touch! Decided to stop by with my friend after a movie. I ordered a red sangria and she had a bahama mama. If you have a sweet tooth like me, go for the sangria. My friend switched her drink. As an appetizer, we shared tostones with shrimp. Not bad- I'm not a big fan of seafood. But our main courses... mmm mmm!! I had the pork chops with rice and beans, and she had the fillet snapper. The seating in this place is extremely tight. They need to remove some tables so that customers can dine more comfortably. Anyway I came here on a double date back in October. Been a little too busy and forgot to give my review. I thought the food was tasty just a little pricey. I wouldn't order the ceviche again. It wasn't flavored the way I'm used to. The plantain appetizer with the different meats were really good. My shrimp and rice entree was really good but I think it was priced too high for what it was. Came here on a Friday night after seeing that 5 Burro had an hour long wait. Sadly, they don't have any happy hour specials. To start, I got a Pomegranate Margarita; they definitely did not skimp on the tequila. It was sour from the Pomegranate yet really strong. In addition, we got the ceviche, which consists of squid, shrimp and scallops. I normally prefer fish based ceviche, but this was still good. For entrees we got the Paella Valencia and the Churrasco, skirt steak cooked medium rare. The paella was full of flavor and the seafood was cooked well; I found the chicken to be a tad dry though. The skirt steak was cooked medium rare, and paired really well with the chimichurri that was provided. Each entree comes with a generous portion of rice and beans on the side! We also got a side of plantains, which were crispy on the outside, yet soft on the inside. Prices are a tad high but average for restaurants in the area. The steak was juicy. I had the passion fruit shake, he had the cabana mojito & the house merlot. The waitress was very patient, pleasant & attentive. I think this might be the hottest spot in forest hills that I've been to so far. The vibe is at an all time high and everyone in there is energetic and having a great time. The wait - the wait was not that bad. 30 minutes usually, but can be faster as they clear tables pretty fast. If you're looking for less noise, sit by the front. If you're looking for energy, sit at the back. Outdoor seating also available but never vacant. The Service - the staff was attentive and knowledgeable of their menu. Hard working people that never stood around and were constantly moving. No complaints The Drinks - very good bar with tons of selections to choose from. My favorite so far is the cojito. But it honestly seems like you can't go wrong if you're looking to turn up your sweet drink game. Apps - solid. They have great tasting apps. I would recommend the coconut shrimp and the stuffed mashed plantains. Mains - tbd. I've had the chicken dishes in this restaurant so far and they all kind of taste the same and seem like they use the same sauce. Not saying they are bad, but a little variety on their chicken dishes would be good. Looking forward to trying out their other meat dishes and getting updates on the quality. This place is small and quaint, but don't let the size fool you. I have been coming to eat here over 15 years now and the food, drinks and service are always on point. Some of my favorite appetizers are the Marquita's, the camarones de coco, tostones relleno and the empanadas jamaiquinas. As for the main dishes I love the Ropa Vieja, the Coco Cabana Vegetales with shrimp, the Camarones al Ajillo, the Pollo al Ajillo, and the Pollo Con Camarones and the Paella Marinera. Honestly I haven't had a bad dish yet at this place and after 15 years of eating here, that says it all. Dessert and cafe con leche is a great way to finish off the night. I always try to get here by 5-5:30pm to get my name on the seating list for dinner, otherwise you can wait a long time if you go later in the evening. I've been to Cabana quite a few times, but had not gone in a few years. After not knowing where to go for my birthday dinner, we decided to go back to Cabana. Before entering the restaurant... BEWARE, parking is brutal, so get there early because it will take a few minutes to find parking if your are not willing to shell out cash for the parking garages. Now, everytime I come to Cabana, I always hear myself grumbling about the price of food (not that it's ridiculously pricey, but for my wallet it can be). However, after I finish my meal(s) I always remember why I do come back every so often. The food is really good here... I mean really good if you choose the right thing. Now on my latest adventure at Cabana, we started off with our usual appetizers of tostones rellenos, all types are good I had shrimp and ropa vieja. My uncle ordered the ceviche which was delish! The lemon juice was incredible and tasty. For dinner I personally had the Pollo Al la ajillo, it was a big portion and very good without the sauce being over dramatic. Very tasty. I sampled everyone else's food which was all well done as well. Desert was also amazing, had the Cabana Banana Fritters which was amazing (had banana ice cream! YUMMMM). This particular location is good. Parking: will be challenging in this area. Food: good food. I have had better in other Latin restaurants but the food will make you forget that the space is somewhat crowded. Service: the reason this place lost a star. As most people, I am picky about service. If you sit on the chairs facing the booth, you will get your chair kicked and/or waiters butt cheeks next to you. The waiter also grabbed my wine glass by the top as opposed to the stem, which means he had his fingers all over the top of where I drink (picky? Celebrated my brothers-in-law's new citizenship at Cabana! We started with the appetizer Bocadillos platter for 2 and were so glad we did. The empanadas and sauce were so tasty, a little different than what we're used to, but superior in flavor. A must. The jerk chicken wings were deep in color and were cooked perfectly. Another must. The shrimp fritter were so good! Will get this again as a starter any day of the week. The Pollo Concamarones - jumbo shrimp, chicken breast and tostones over saffron rice with delicious sauce. Voted best meal on the table. Arroz Con Pollo was served in a cast iron pot and the best. The Churrasco Latin American skirt steak served with pickled red onion and chimmichurri was tender and tasty. When my boyfriend and I entered the restaurant we first noticed that it was not too spacious nevertheless comfortable. We first ordered an appetizer, which contained stuffed plantains with 4 different types of meat. The beef and the chicken was well flavored and generally tasted better compare to the other two which I think was mince and something else, I don't remember lol ! It was also served with some freshly fried plantain chips which I think were so delicious . We then received the drinks that we ordered which was a orange and pineapple, with a piece of fruit which I figured was intended to identify the specific beverage. Unfortunately they mixed up our drinks and I ended with drink my bf pineapple drink thinking it was orange. Then I realized what had happened. The waiter mixed the drinks and I wasn't too pleased by that!! Now the actual meal it self was a disaster, my boyfriend and I didn't enjoy it one bit. So we paid and left. There was a long wait I came on a Sunday. I order the steak with shrimp was only decent had better the steak had a burnt taste to it was horrible the beans was salty. My boyfriend and I ate here a few Saturdays ago for an impromptu date night and had a great time. We were able to get a table right away, the ambiance was great, and the food delicious. We decided to sample a little bit of everything and split an order of empanadas, ceviche, and the special that night of skirt steak, shrimp and plantains. We also each had a glass of red sangria and it ended up being a perfect amount of food for two. The sangria was not great unfortunately. It was warm and wasn't sangria so much as red wine over ice with some apples and oranges on top. I don't get it again. The empanadas were fine but nothing special. I'd probably skip them again too. The ceviche and entree, however, were delicious. The ceviche was the perfect mix of refreshing and mildly spicy. The seafood was fresh and tasty though I do wish it was chopped up in small pieces instead of being left whole, so it would actually be scooped up with the plantain chips. The skirt steak was perfectly cooked to our liking (medium rare), the shrimp was buttery and flavorful and the plantains melted in our mouths. All the sauces and seasonings worked beautifully together and we ate every bite. We'll definitely be back and will probably try one of the cocktails and a different appetizer next time. The both times I went to the bathroom I overheard the staff complaining about their tables. I was standing next to them meaning they can obviously see me (unless I'm invisible) I thought they would notice and stop but instead they continued ranting. Our waiter was very impatient and didn't check on us. He shouldn't be in this line of work since his behavior was so ill mannered. This place always has good food and is always crowded. I had lunch recently on a Friday and it was good. I had the Coco Cabana with shrimp - red potatoes, green peas, broccoli, carrots, spinach and caribbean root vegetables (yuca, calabaza, and yautia) simmered in coconut milk, flavored with curry and habanero peppers. My server checked on me one time, however I was almost finished my meal. Ordered a mango daiquiri which was tasty but I've definitely had better. For din din, I ordered the skirt steak with rice only and a side of maduros and let me just say THESE WERE THE SWEETEST MADUROS I've EVER had. There was no wait time which stunned me because they always have an extremely long waitlist for seating. That being said I love the food, but which the restaurant was larger. Actually, the man next to us bit into his empañada and it quirted onto our table so much so they had to change our entire table cloth and paper under it. The lady at the reception asked me whether I want to stay at table or stay at the bar. I told her whichever is fast. However, there was a white couple after me got a table before me (I am Chinese).
