Well tonight we walked back to the bar and had a drink then since we were at a table in the bar section and watching different sporting events on the t.v. sets we decided to just stay where we were and have our dinner right there. I only wish I would have taken a picture of our food but it looked so good that a picture of it was the last thing on my mind at the time. Anyway, I ordered a combination plate of a chili rellano and a chicken enchilada with rice and beans. The person I was with ordered a carne asada wet burrito w/green sauce also with rice and beans. The portions were decent, the food was delicious, the service was good and the price was fair at around seventy something dollars for the two of us plus our drinks. Live review: so far I had to add salt to the house salsa and wait 7 minutes for our server to bring us water. We have ordered our food (2:30PM) and now we wait. Oh pretty fast 2:36PM. Great effort but...no cigar. Cabo Grill & Cantina needs to develop their signature flavor. Starting with their salsas'. Everything was missing that spark. If you love authentic Mexican food and have a good idea of what it tastes like, don't expect it at Cabo Grill & Cantina. I'd compare it to an El Torito take-out if there were such a thing. This place just started popping up on all my socials. Glad I came back to give them a second chance. Food was on point and the drinks were strong. They have like 5 different salsas, so for those complaining about the 2 they give you, you need to ask for the other 3. Plus they have queso! Not sure why that is so hard to find in California, but these guys have figured it out. The restaurant side is kind of dull, but the cantina side is pretty fun. Well worth a visit. read more

I really wanted to like this place as another Mexican alternative. Let's start with the chips they were not bad and came warm but the salsas were not good and had no heat whatsoever (I was later told via PM that if you want hotter salsas you have to ask, the waiter NEVER mentioned it). Ordered a combo plate with a carnitas taco, shredded beef enchilada with beans and rice. The carnitas taco was big, but who puts lettuce and bagged shredded cheese on it? . The enchilada was really just bad tasting and was lukewarm at best. Beans not edible served cold and cold cheese on top, the rice was soggy and not real Mexican rice also lukewarm, the whole plate screams food (similar to the Whole Enchilada, very Americanized IMHO). Anyhow it's a shame with all the competition locally, I should have just gone to our known places that we frequent especially for what they charge here it's not cheap, not the most expensive, but not inexpensive. Also to mention the place was not busy at all but it took at least 10mins to get a menu and the waiter seemed annoyed that we asked for one.. Anyhow I wish them well. read more

Tasted this at a catering and it was good. Not the best Mexican but good for the area. Beans and rice are prettt authentic as is the guacamole. Chicken was oddly seasoned and the carnitas were super dry and too thin, stringy. Nice setup with chafing dishes and chips/salsa. read more

Used to be a regular here. Went for lunch today for Taco Tuesday. Still great food and great service. Love the atmosphere as well since it's still has the dive bar feeling. I was really impressed with this New Mexican food restaurant that i found and we both very much enjoyed the food and the service. Prices are a bit high. I had two taco's one shredded chicken and one shredded beef. They were a bit on the small side and a bit more expensive then other Mexican restaurants but they were good tasting. My albondigas soup was great and piping hot, the guacamole was way to salty but my wife's shrimp and chicken plate was excellent. The two salsas that come out with the chips were good and they were both different but they both tasted bland and very mild. Its worth going back though next time im gonna try one of the big burritos. read more

One of my favorite places for Taco Tuesday! Great prices and delicious Tacos. Start off with chips and 2 kinds of salsa. I went with the three soft tacos (chicken, asada and shrimp) while there were no complaints the shrimp was by far my favorite! Seating was very open but they got packed quick during lunch time. We gave this place a try for the first time last week, called and placed an order for pick up. Even at peak lunch hour, they told me it would take 20 minutes and sure enough, order was ready when I got there. Small parking lot in the back was pretty full, but it looked like street parking wouldn't have been too big of an issue either. Staff was very friendly, and in the 10 mins I was there, I saw staff greeting regulars so it seems very much a popular neighborhood place. We got 3 items - carnitas enchiladas, a combination plate, and a shrimp burrito. Our order also came with chips and salsa, which they have the GOOD fresh chips. It's thin and not overly greasy - the best example of restaurant style chips. Mild salsa was really good - just the right consistency to coat your chip but not chunky. Their chipotle salsa had a mild spiciness to it, but sadly lacked other flavors. Not too many places do carnitas enchiladas, and they did a really good job here. The meat was tender, and the sauce was full of flavor. I think due to the size of the take out container, the portion size of the rice was beans was slightly smaller than what you would receive when dining in (saw a couple of plates being served). 5/5, would order again. The combo plate had a hard taco, chicken enchilada and a tamale. The masa was soft for the tamale and you can tell it was fresh. Shredded beef taco wasn't overly dried like some other places do when they fry the taco. However - the chicken enchilada is where we ran into an issue that led me to leave off one star - it was filled with fresh shredded chicken, and while it was delicious, there was a small SHARP chicken bone in the mixture. As it was in an enchilada, it was also wrapped in the corn tortilla before smothered in sauce and cheese. I was able to pick it out once I ate it, but it worries me of what if I had given it to my toddler. Since you can tell it was fresh made and hand shredded, might've been an honest mistake and oversight. Parents - definitely check your younger kiddos plates before just giving it to them though. Shrimp burrito was a decent size, and the shrimps were plump and tasty inside. We also got an horchata, and it was heavier on the cinnamon side where there was almost a spicy kick to it. I'll definitely try them again to check out their other offerings. Midrange prices - but glad to support a neighborhood gem! read more

We are visiting and Yelp helped me find this spot for lunch. Bright and cheerful, the folks who welcomed us were totally fired up.we sat down and with out even asking water, chips and salsa. We ordered drinks and lunch and listened to the Latin salsa music softly playing in the background, we ordered chicken tacos and steak taco's and flower tortillas. When our food came it looked fantastic. The crispy taco taco shells were home made and fried to perfection. The refried beans were delicious and the rice was very flavorful. The waitstaff was very friendly and helpful, we really enjoyed our meal here and we look forward to returning for a meal in the future. So glad we chose to stop in here. The food and service were great! I ordered the chicken enchiladas with the jalapeño rice and refried beans. The jalapeño rice was so good! Tacos Tuesdays are great. Liz at the bar is our main reason for coming here. She is terrific. Ordered buffalo wing and they were the worst we've ever been served. They have good happy hour and especially on Taco Tuesdays. You have to get there early to beat the 5pm dinner rush for a seat. There is usually a line. They also have a bar area where you can get your happy hour drink while you wait to seated. Their fajitas and tacos are my favorites. read more

We have been coming here for many many years! We even went to support their orange location when the brea location shut down during the pandemic. THIS PLACE HAS CHANGED! and not for the better. The service has always been lacking but it is pretty much non-existent now. We would still support this location despite drastic raise in prices. I understand every place has to recoup their cost somehow but these prices seem unreasonable for the food quality that is served. The most recent visit resulted in my credit card number being stolen and used at a jewelry store. Thank goodness my bank notified me right away. I have to say that I am very disappointed with the direction this place has gone. The staff have turned into thieves. It sucks because we don't have very many Mexican FOOD restaurants in Brea. (Don't get me started on Corazon or Cha Cha's). I'll drive a little further and go to El Farolito and I encourage you to do the same. Protect the money you work hard to earn. read more

What happened, guys? This place needs to be more consistent! We were in a week before, and we LOVED the service and food, and I gave this place 5 stars here on Yelp. We eagerly returned 4 days later, and the beef had a fishy taste and smell, and the service was not good. Our steak was fishy smelling and fishy tasting! I love seafood but I don't want my steak to taste like fish. The waiter was not attentive, and the manager lady (older person) was on her cell most of our visit, and only to collect our $$ did she come around. This was around 4:30 PM before the dinner rush, and about 20% of the seats had customers. I asked the waiter why the steak tasted and smelled like fish, and he said, "Because we cook fish and meat on the same grill and close to each other". He did not apologize nor ask if he could recook the meal. It's sad that the experience went from fantastic to terrible. read more

The only reason I'm giving them two stars: crispy tacos! Their house margaritas are pretty much water down lemonade with salt. Salsa that comes with the chips sucks one thousand times.
