Fun, hotel turned from motel, place to stay. Central to a lot of what Amarillo has to offer.

After a 6.5-hour drive, we arrived at Cactus Cove Inn Amarillo hoping for a comfortable place to rest. Instead, it turned into one of the worst hotel experiences we've ever had. The front desk staff were polite and courteous, although they looked completely exhausted. At check-in, instead of key cards, we were handed a card with our room number (313) and a handwritten 4-digit code to unlock the room. Right away, there were red flags. The elevator closest to the entrance was out of service with an "I want a little me time" sign taped to it, forcing us to walk all the way across the building to use another elevator. Once on the third floor, Room 313 required another long U-turn walk down worn, dirty hallways. Before even reaching the room, the hallways were in terrible condition. Construction debris, cement material, cracked walls, and a pervasive foul odor made the building feel neglected. The smell was so strong it seemed to cling to your clothes. Then we opened the room door. The room looked absolutely nothing like the photos online. Nearly everything appeared damaged or worn out--the chair, desk, lamp, walls, ceiling, blinds, and bathroom. The bathtub looked filthy, and the overall condition suggested years of deferred maintenance. The most shocking discovery was large dried boogers smeared on the framed artwork hanging on the wall. At that point, we knew we could not stay there. To make matters worse, the hotel's automatic entrance doors later stopped working, so guests--including families with children--had to enter and exit through the attached 21-and-over bar. We checked out less than five minutes after entering the room and immediately found another hotel. Paying approximately $170 per night for a property in this condition is simply unacceptable. I took photos documenting everything I've described because the online pictures do not accurately represent the property's current condition. Unless the hotel undergoes a major renovation and dramatically improves its cleanliness and maintenance, I cannot recommend staying here. read more

We made a quick overnight trip to Amarillo and didn't want to spend too much on a hotel--but also didn't want to stay somewhere too "budget." I stumbled across Cactus Cove and was immediately drawn in by how charming it looked in the photos. At just $89 before taxes, it felt like a total bargain. The property offers a variety of amenities: a Boutique, massage spa, swimming pool, putting green, corn hole, gym, and pickleball courts. We saw everything except the gym and pickleball area--maybe we missed them, or maybe they're tucked away somewhere. Either way, we weren't there long enough to use them. The overall vibe is very cute and cozy. You can tell it's newly opened and still working through some minor kinks. Our room was clean and spacious and included a fridge and microwave, which was great. One thing to note--there are no phones in the rooms, so if you need anything, you'll have to head to the front desk. This is a kid-friendly spot, which is great for families. That said, if you're planning an adults-only getaway and hoping for peace and quiet, you might want to reconsider. Despite the branding and decor feeling geared more toward adults, there were quite a few kids running around--late at night and again early in the morning. It wasn't a problem for us, but something to be aware of. There is a western bar restaurant inside this hotel which makes it easy to grab eats and drinks. It gets extremely busy!! Overall, the hotel is cute, the staff was friendly, and the place was clean and welcoming. For the price, we had a great stay and would consider coming back--especially once they've fully settled in. read more

Reserved a comfort double room as I was traveling with my son & needed two beds. Got an accessible room with one king bed. Showed the front desk my confirmation and she said, I don't see that on my end. So my son slept on the love seat. I didn't feel safe with the doors with codes not keys. Amenities would have been great if I had little kids that liked bounce houses. Air conditioner was tucked in the back corner and didn't cool the room. Bathroom door didn't close. No vanity. I'm not sure where the pictures on the website came from but our room looked nothing like the pictures. read more

As the Ultimate Planning Mom with a Pinterest board full of road trip dreams, I wanted to love Cactus Cove in Amarillo. I really did. You can see the vision -- the vintage charm, the bold colors, the quirky vibe. But sadly, the reality didn't match the online sparkle. Our room felt more like a forgotten afterthought than a stylish boutique stay. Torn furniture, peeling lampshades, scuffed walls, and a smell that screamed "moist basement" despite the dry Amarillo air. Everything inside felt damp -- and not in a spa-day way. The common areas? Cute at first glance, like a well-filtered Instagram post. But up close, it's more cover-up than renovation. I wish the same effort went into making the place durable and truly welcoming. And the checkout experience? Not even a "How was your stay?" Just a flat "Safe travels," which ironically was the highlight of the interaction. It's sad, really -- the potential is there. You can feel the dream of what this place wants to be. But as it stands, it's a far miss. I hope someday it lives up to the vision, because right now, it's all style with no staying power. read more

What sold me was the indoor playground with the pool. The rooms are a solid 3 stars, but they don't charge much here. $50/night. We stayed one night. It's safe. The rooms feel old and the doors look janky but the price is cheap. The pool, dining, playground area all looks updated. Looks like they're updating things little by little. I must say the owners are trying hard to bring back the former glory of this hotel. Our room was clean, warm, quiet, and comfortable. Breakfast was interesting. For free, there were the usual selections of waffle machine, fruit, dry cereal, coffee, and juices. For $6.99, the hotel offers a selection of hot breakfasts. Though not necessarily homemade, the selections are freshly cooked and were very good. My only complaint was they had no tea bags for hot tea. Keep in mind this is an extremely family friendly hotel, so, since it was entirely full, there were a fair number of children. We felt we got what we paid for. read more

Stayed here twice on our family road trip. What sold us was the indoor playground. We have a 4 year old, so it helped a lot to get all her energy out before bedtime. The room was clean, but you can tell it's been remodeled. Staff were very friendly, free continental breakfast and inexpensive. read more

We had an AMAZING time staying here! The pool was clean and warm, and the play area was perfect for our kids. We enjoyed putt-putt, giant Connect 4, and the yellow slide was a huge hit! The rooms were very clean, and I was impressed to see that the staff strips and washes the entire bedding in every vacated room--such great attention to detail. Yes, it's an older hotel, but they've made this place absolutely perfect for families to enjoy. We also ate at the restaurant, and it was honestly one of the best steak dinners I've ever had. I HIGHLY recommend this place, especially considering how reasonably priced it is! read more

Customer BEWARE... booked online through Expedia, the photos online are not the true photos. Online the rooms seem clean and bright. In reality they are dingy, old, motel rooms. One of my biggest issues was the entry way is one large glass door, being single women traveling alone this made us feel a little sketchy right off the bat. Also had to throw our body weight into the door to even open it and at other times it wouldn't fully close. We made an original complaint to the front desk because our blinds that covered the front entry to our room were broken and left holes where passersbyers could visibly see us in our room. We asked if we could switch rooms or even pay for an upgrade and we were told the hotel was sold out, even though online showed open rooms. Instead we were given tape to tape the blinds closed. Fair enough, only staying one night can't be that bad..... Wrong, opened the bathroom to shower and found mold in the shower. Absolutely not, packed our bags and cut our losses. Moved down the road to the Holiday Inn, which is about the same price and much nicer. read more

Checked into our room and the light switch didn't work, there is no fan in the bathroom for humidity, and the cord to the AC/Heat has been spliced with electrical tape. Smells of smoke - would not recommend. read more

Carpet Frayed Toilet seal very ugly Bedding: sheets were reversed TV: needed 2 remotes 1 for power 1 for channel guide, NO ONE knew what the tv stations are provided by, then they gave us a third remote and that had nothing to do with the tv. They advertise a gym on their website and Expedia but there is none. The only thing they have is an open floor?

When we arrived, I went to ask for a crib. First, the attendant ignored me, while she did something on her computer for five minutes. Once she did finally acknowledged me, she told me they don't have cribs and offered absolutely no help. That was the first problem. Outside of that, the place is disgusting. Dirty, broken down, the carpet needs to be stretched, the parking lot is unsafe... just don't do it. read more

This facility is extremely cool for kid's to visit for a few hours. Then get a room down the street. It is nicely decorated for the most part. Mini golf and swings are cool. Upon arrival, it was extremely find as there was no signage except the steak house. I literally thought the address was mistakenly listed as a steak house and had to turn around. The room we were given was literally falling apart. There was a white powder substance left from previous occupants on the mini fridge. There was trash on the floor from previous occupants. The pool had only 3 clean towels available for the 20 plus people in the pool area. The walls are paper thin and they left the doors to the steakhouse bar place next door open so the music from the band flooded the halls and rooms. Extremely loud and cannot rest in this place. The elevator was out of order but no signage and the front counter directed us to the elevator. The hall carpets are hard water stained white and crusty. This place has a cute concept. But, a fresh coat of white paint absolutely wasn't the only answer. Do better. read more

Thieves will rob you here. We stayed for night and hotel itself is older but cutely decorated. The problem is that we parked literally in front of the exit door, about 4 ft away from our window with an outdoor camera pointed at our car and somebody still broke into and stole everything in our secured roof rack storage container. That isn't the fault of the hotel. However, I was very unimpressed with their response. When I informed them and I asked to speak to a manager so I could review the cameras, the front desk lady said she would have a manager come talk to me. 30 mins later, still no manager. I went up and asked again. Again, told that manager would be coming by. 1 hour later still no manager. I sent my husband back up the desk and that time he was told that there was no footage of the theft. No apology and zero assistance or willingness by the management to help a guest. Horrible experience. Do not recommend. read more

What a DUMP! Water in bathroom won't shut off, stains on bedding and burn holes in blankets, furniture is destroyed with scratches and stains, broken blinds on hotel room door so people potentially could look in, carpet was STICKY! Tub is stained and has mold. Sprinkler system is rusted and covered in calcium deposits, ceilings look like they are about to fall in any minute. I refuse to take a shower here, don't even want to sleep here! This is quite possibly the GROSSEST hotel I've ever stayed in! Staff isn't friendly either ... just miserable experience all around. Arrived at 2:30 am after being on the road for 9 hours. Exhausted and just want to sleep. Not happening. read more

Middle of a remodel but perfect for kids! Our little girls were in heaven here- thinking it was the greatest place ever! We stayed twice, on the second stay we were in a Deluxe suite instead of comfort- I quickly figured out that the deluxe rooms were the updated ones- just a pro tip. The comfort room was a little outdated- but we were very happy with the deluxe. Very nice staff and amazing pizza at the hotel bar. Would stay again! read more

wish i would have read these reviews before booking here. What a hellacious experience. $118 bucks should get me a room that didn't smell like mold. It should get me a room where the shower head was not duct taped on. The list goes on. OH and they had no PHONE to call the front desk. Family owned and operated unique slice of Texas. A refreshing change and in all my years of extensive travel, perhaps the most satisfying shower I've ever experienced. I'm traveling cross country and booking hotels last minute. I arrived in Amarillo and searched around at the options and chose Cactus cove for its unique style and charm among a sea of boring corporate depressing chains. You know what you're getting and so I took a chance here. I'm glad I did! I arrived and the outside is fresh and new. Big Texas mural and a disco ball cactus. I was sold. Got inside and it's a total throwback to the 80's in style with the rooms facing a lush courtyard and even a mini golf setup. The Bar had music going and everything was clean. When I went to check in and spoke to the people at the desk, they could not have been nicer. Turns out it as the owner and his daughter. They shared how the whole family has different roles there and they all pitch in. I heard about their grandkids and plans they've got as they're making the improvements since they've only had it for a year. I got recommendations for the restaurant and they put me at ease. It's easy to forget sometimes the difference in tone and feel and soul you have when you're staying someplace that means something to the people running it. I went upstairs to my room which was facing the courtyard. Interesting set up but had zero issues. It was clean, nice bed, everything I needed for the quick stop. After a long day of driving I wanted to clean up before I ate. When I turned on the shower it was INCREDIBLE!!! Huge shower head high enough for me 6'1 to stand up under. The frisbee size shower head was delivering pressure one could only dream of. I have never written a review where the shower was a highlight and I've traveled all over the world. This was the BEST water pressure and shower set up and most satisfying way to wash off the day I've EVER had and this was at an inexpensive stop off. I will never forget it. If you know, you know. When I got downstairs to the bar it was quiet, it was a Monday so wasn't expecting a party. I travel with a service animal (a pug) who sat down with me. As a solo traveler I usually keep to myself, but here it was incredibly friendly! As soon as we sat down a couple people came up and said hi to me and my dog. Then a couple more. My service animal is allowed to be interacted with and she loved it. Pretty soon a had met everyone there. I heard about the bartenders German Shepard, the managers dogs he's still hoping to get back from Atlanta, the people next to me also had a pug and were telling me about its crazy personality. I'm usually pretty introverted but this was such a welcome change and feeling and I almost forgot I'm traveling cross country alone. I felt compelled to write this not only because the people who own and run this spot make it feel like a family. You can just tell it's not a crappy chain that nobody wants to be there. Sure it's not perfect, but for the price I paid I wasn't expecting perfect but the value I got for what I paid FAR exceeded every expectation. Again, if I was passing through I swear I might stop again just for the shower mid day. It was that good. If you want to support a local business and family run spot and are sick of the same old cookie cutter motels, this is your spot. The rates are great, the people are nice, and you can feel the difference because everyone cares. Kindness goes a long way and this place has that in spades. read more

This place has seen better days. We had to switch rooms right away because the one assigned smelled like a smoking room. The room we got was well sized and the beds were comfortable. Very unique place to stay. Fun activities (pickle ball, putting green, HUGE connect 4). The Dixon Creek Boutique has some great items (and the owners are really food people). Nice to have a bar and restaurant attached. The breakfast was good, if they have the BucEes breakfast tacos pay for the upgrade! The staff is really awesome! I forgot to get all their names, but I did get Isabel's name - she was great! We had a really nice extended stay. We'll be back! read more

My husband, daughter, and I stayed here with our two cats during a cross country move. The staff were all friendly and helpful. There were still signs up for renovations but in our room it looked like decor was all that was really left to do. There is an incredible play area in the lobby for kids with some mini golf holes, swings, space to run around, and a fountain with koi (ask the front desk for fish food!). There is also a decent steakhouse attached where we enjoyed a lovely meal.. We ended up there on a Friday, so there was live music at the restaurant. If you are traveling with kids, especially for a longer trip, I can't recommend this place enough. read more

First time ever here in Amarillo,Texas. I stayed here for a super extended period of time and man let me tell you... 1. Environment environment environment... great atmosphere and ambience!!! While I was there they were doing some very very nice remodeling of all the rooms so I can only imagine how they'll turn in the future. 2. Staff.... Some of the best hospitality I've received from any hotel in the country!! They'll literally bend over backwards too try and help you with what you need. 3. The laundry room... They have a very neat and simple room that you can literally control from your phone and gives you realtime updates about your clothes 4. The Western Horseman Club.... They literally have a club inside the hotel!! Imagine that. Great food and a good time all without having to leave the hotel is awesome no brainer 5. The Pool... if not this might be the coolest pool set up I've ever had in a hotel... ANYWHERE !!!! plenty of room for sitting and moving around with awesome lighting for the pool side pictures Kinda lengthy review but I will recommend this hotel for anyone who is here for a short while or a long time. Took a gamble to stay here instead of my usual hotel in Amarillo and was let down. The hotel is still going under renovations so there is a lot of work to be done at this place with light switches that don't work, missing paint and updating of the facilities. The open area was really nice with swings, a putting green and a fountain with fish in it. The hotel has a bar that fills up the parking lot so no real place to park at 9 pm. I think when they get it complete it will be a nice place but for now I will skip here for any other trip to Amarillo read more

Beware that you don't book a COMFORT room - that means old, dark and dumpy. Our room was nothing like the pictures on Expedia or website. One black wall, others mint green. A soiled chair in the corner. The bedroom door is glass covered with cut out blinds. The FULL breakfast consisted of white bread, bagels, waffles, yogurt and cereal with ONLY chocolate milk available. Eggs, bacon are extra $$. Very nice staff at the desk but the manager never responded to our concerns. read more

This hotel is a joke! The breakfast is b.s.! The waffle makers weren't going and turned off early! They didn't even provide non stick spray for it! If you want hot breakfast you gotta pay for it! The swimming pool is freezing cold! They don't even have paper towels for the rooms . this fuckin place is a over priced dog pound! The refrigerator in our room doesn't even work! This place is very hard to find their sign is all about the Horsemen bar and Grill. You have to look really close for the signage that says cactus Cove in the address was not visible. I had to call two times to tell them where I was and where they were The employees at the front desk were great. They treated me really good and took care of my needs. The first elevator didn't work so we had a cross the Motel to get to the other elevator rooms were nice the motel I would recommend, but you better look real hard at the signage. read more

Do not stay here unless you like to hear dogs barking all the time. This is a pet friendly place, not a human friendly place. Their solution was to move me to a different room, not the people that created the noisy dog problem. Thats Texas hotels for you. read more
