Nice tex-mex. Decent service (could have been a little better, but it was busy). Okay margarita - not much liquor. I split a pitcher with my husband and didn't even feel it. My dinner was great! Grilled steak soft taco's with avocado- wonderfully spiced and done medium rare with lots of goodies, yummy! Salsa is good with just enough heat for me, but probably mild by most standards. The rice is more of an indian flavor with ?saffron? I'm guessing, but very good. Very kid friendly - always a plus for me. Bathrooms were nice and clean and (per my husband) even had a changing table in the men's room - bonus points. Place was packed at 6:30 on a Wed, but we only had to wait about 10 minutes. We've eaten here twice now and haven't been disappointed. I just wish I could find a really good 'rita in KC. I miss the old Sol Azteca. read more

It's a solid option for Tex-Mex. The salsa is tasty and there are several varieties so you've got a little something for just about everyone. Chips were crispy and warm. Our server was very friendly and when one plate arrived incorrect it was fixed very quickly. I'm not a fan of the rice they serve here but my fish taco was quite yummy. read more

The espinaca con queso is worth every star! :) Cactus grill is a great place to grab a bite to eat and watch a football or KU game. There food has pretty good flavor and they offer a wide variety of options for your sides (ranging from fries & beans and rice to fresh fruit or veggies), a feature I really appreciate about their menu. Was surprised actually to rate this high after seeing some more recent reviews. Although we've enjoyed this place for several years, it had been probably six months since the last visit............and most reviews in that timeframe seemed to indicate the place was spinning around the drain. After dinner tonight with a good friend I can emphatically state that this place is NOT spinning around the drain. Had checked for menu online earlier today and saw them no longer listed on Jose Pepper's website..........when I asked, they said they are still owned by JP but are working on a specific website which should be up shortly. (Hint to mods, Cactus Grill is no longer listed on the josepepper.com link listed). Place was PACKED tonight (well DUH on a Friday evening around 6:30) and if there was any complaint it was pretty loud inside. Considering the time we visited I can't blame the restaurant though...........abd despite the crowd our table service was excellent. I ordered my favorite (both here and Peppers regular places) Monterey Chicken Burrito......love that espinaca both as an appetizer and on the meal itself. My wife had the bacon-wrapped jalapeno shrimp and our friend an enchilada platter. All plates were completely devoured and happy faces around the table. Cactus Grill befitting its physical location is kinda like Jose Peppers on steroids.........in many ways the same but also just better. Hard to choose between here and K-Macho's as our favorite Mexican (well, Tex-Mex..........have to concede that) sit-down restaurant. The final part of the Mexican Holy Trinity would be El Fogon at 105th & Metcalf...........but only for carry-out. read more

It's pretty good. I lump this one in the On the Borders etc. I would recommend this for the person who is fine with what I call American/Mexican food. The best part of this place is the Happy hour which I believe is 3-6 M-Sat. Several apps that are truly a meal for 5 bucks or less and 2 dollar Margarita's. Margarita's are great size and taste awesome. I like them because they are much less sweet than most around town. read more

Consistently delicious food. The service on the bar side can suffer to a degree, so I'd recommend sitting on the dining room side. We live close by and eat here regularly. Excellent service, good chips and salsa. Very well run place. The food is pretty average Tex-Mex, but decent. I like the shrimp tacos and the tortilla soup. On occasions the tortilla soup is excellent. If you go between 3-6 at happy hour the house margaritas are $3, which is an excellent deal. read more

Great mexican place, the best of the 'chains' in the area!

Since our move to the Kansas City metro area my family has been searching for a decent tex-mex restaurant. The cactus grill has great food but less than perfect service, thus the three star rating. I had the carnitas tacos. The pork was tender and flavorful. The sauce was decadent. Two members of my party ordered the ahi tuna salad. The tuna was not sushi grade but edible and the dressing was good. The sweet dressing was really sweet, and my party recommends that you order it on the side. My only real complaint is that the queso was on the watery side. Our service wasn't great. The server was not quick to refill drinks or clear plates. We waited a while before anyone approached our table to take our drink orders. We ate after the dinner rush, so I'm hoping that our server was just having an off night. My family will definitely eat there again. read more

One of our favorite local spots for Mexican food. Their chips and salsa are delicious as well as their espinaca dip!! I've been eating at this place since I was just a little chap (now in my 20's) and I still can't get enough. The service can be hit or miss, but the food is delicious. Every time! I've tried pretty much everything they make, but almost always order Pollo Magnifico (not actually listed on the menu) and the Monterey Chicken Burrito. Wow, what a decline! For close to a year I would frequent this place 3-4 times a week for lunch and the occasional dinner. Service was always ABOVE & BEYOND...food has always been decent to good. (It's the service that always brought me back.) Roughly 6-8 months ago, changes started to occur. Now I understand, and am no stranger to attrition, but some of their BEST people disappeared almost overnight and practically any decent level of service along with them. Changes occurred to the menu, but didn't drastically effect the overall quality of food that you've come to expect. Now, that was 6-8 months ago...I have given them more than enough time to find, replace, and properly train new staff....but every time I go back, the level at which they fail astounds me. Today for example, I come in for a late lunch and sit at the bar. (New person taking care of the bar, I've never seen him before.) One other person sitting at the bar and possibly 5-6 of the booths are taken and looks as if finishing up their lunch. The bartender/server is quick to ask my drink order, but slow to fulfill it, and brings along chips and salsa, which I do not care for. (he simply assumed everyone wants these without asking)(not that big of a deal, all things considered) I don't need to peruse the menu, as I have ordered many many times, so after a few menu minutes he asks if I am ready to order and he seems like he has somewhere else he needs to be as he leans in to take my order, but his body is facing away...like he's in a big hurry (remember, there's only 1 other person sitting at the bar) I start my order, but need to customize slightly...and before I have a chance to tell him my substitutions, he's already walking away?...we finally got the order in...and after an appropriate amount of time, someone brings a plate of food to me, tries to sit it down while she tells me what it is....I claim that it is NOT what I ordered, only to be responded with by a very confused look...she takes the plate away and discusses the issue with the bartender, who tells her it is supposed to go to the one other person at the bar...who has already been served MY order, and has started to eat? Again, there's two of us at the bar, and by now roughly 3 of the 6 booths have left...I would think getting an order correct with only half a dozen people to choose from, wouldn't be that difficult, especially since 4 of the six are getting ready to leave after they have finished their meals...After I get the corrected order, the only time anyone (the bartender) asks how things are is about half way through my meal, just after I have taken a bite, and while he's on his way to do other things...(more of a courtesy 'ask' than a real care as to how my meal is after finally getting it severed properly.) So now that I'm finished, I'm looking around to pay for my 'experience', no one to be found....oh wait here comes the bartender to ask if he can refill by beverage for the first time...no, I think I'll pay and get out of there for probably the last time. If anyone is confused, feel free to ask how I really feel about the level of service you now get from what used to be a great little local spot for a quick decent meal. read more

Came here for lunch the other day and was not impressed. The chips and salsa were pretty good but the food was lackluster. Boyfriend I each ordered a carnitas dish and although it was not bad it wasn't that great. I have been here in the past and liked it but this trip was different. Also it seemed like there was complete chaos with the servers/management/kitchen staff. They were all running around dropping things, slamming plates down and running around like chickens with their heads cut off. I know it was a little bit of a rush but it just seemed very chaotic. Great food. Great salsa. Amazing 2 for $10 Patron margaritas. Service...what the hell happened? Been coming here for years, last 2 times have been a huge disappointment due to service. Both times Sophie didn't greet our table for 5 minutes. Both times we placed our order right away and then she came back later to ask us for our order. Both times we had to waive her down for more chips or drinks. Both times she forgot we wanted double rice instead of beans for our entrees. When I go here I get stuck in the rut of ordering the same stuff and although I rarely do this I just asked the waiter what he suggested and I ordered it - chicken penne pasta dish which was excellent. I also had the opportunity to talk to Dathan. I guess he is the manager and an impressive person. We used Cactus Grill for an office training session recently; we had a VERY large pick up order for catering... Cactus Grill was wonderful to work with. Everything was delicious, hot, and packaged nicely for us to transport and set up. The bartender that helped us was extremely personable and even helped us carry things out. Everyone at the office raved about the food! We'll absolutely use Cactus Grill for catering again and I'll be headed in for lunch soon too! Oh - and the customer service was amazing when I lost my receipt that I needed for my expense report... They are awesome!!! read more

All lunch items are MICROWAVED. When I complained, the waitress looked at me like I was crazy, then delivered me a FULL bill with no deductions or apologies. Cactus used to be my favorite Mexican restaurant in Kansas City. They must be under new management. The last 2 times I have been the food has come out ice cold, the avocados where blackened. The waiter was alright, we used to go in 2 times a week- and looks like an entire new staff. The food quality has drastically changed and I am so sad.
