Usually they are a 3-4 star restaurant. Today they totally missed the mark. The service was OK, but the food was a total disaster First, we ordered 2 appetizers. We received ZERO. Ordered the skirt steak breakfast tacos. At first I thought they had totally forgot to put steak on them. However, once I started moving the eggs a guacamole around with my fork, to my amazement, there were 3-4 VERY tiny pieces of steak hidden underneath. Had I not searched for it, I would have never known they were there, as you could not taste any steak in any of my bites. It was just an overwhelming flavor of guacamole and their house cream with some egg texture thrown in. We ordered three horchatas to drink. The glasses were filled almost to the rim with ice, as a cost saving measure on the amount of liquid actually goes into the cup. Kids took two drinks and they were gone. If you want more then you need to buy another one. ‍. Someday restaurants will understand the customer satisfaction should come first and NOT profit margin. They raise prices due to "inflation", but never lower them as inflation goes back down. We probably won't be coming back and we were regulars. read more

I went for an anniversary date with my wife on a Saturday night. It was definitely crowded but we were sat quickly outside (which was heated and covered - honestly very cozy even on a cold evening). I asked if they could do something special for our dessert, like write "happy anniversary" on the plate or something, and they ended up comping the dessert for us which was really kind and not expected. We were in the mood for mexican food and after looking over the menu we decided to give Cactus in Proctor a try. When we left for the restaurant, I used the Yelp app to reserve our spot on the waitlist and only had to wait about 15 minutes for our table when we arrived. We used that time to grab a house margarita in the bar area. I make my own margaritas from scratch so I am kinda picky about them and these were pretty good, but not great. For dinner we ordered the chicken chimichanga and chicken fajitas and for a starter the guacamole. All items were soooo good! I haven't had a chimichanga in years and this one didn't disappoint. The outside was crispy and the inside was tender chicken, smothered with cheese and sour cream and topped off with a chile sauce - So Good! The chicken fajitas were good as well. This place is a vibe! Upon entering you notice the restaurant is beautifully decorated. Their restaurant layout is pretty cool and there is a ton of natural light hitting every corner of the restaurant. So no matter where you sit it feels like you're outside. There is an outside seating area that is perfect on a nice PNW summer. Service was great. Zach was our server and was very friendly. The hostess was also very nice. Menu had lots of great options. I had the Camaron Tacos that were perfection. It was just the right portion too. I will be craving these tacos later. The enchiladas were made with blue tortillas and were stuffed with chicken. It was all very delicious. One note I want to make is that this place is not your average Mexican restaurant. This is a southern kitchen style...I would even say Tex Mex flavors. So if you're expecting Mexican you will not find those same flavors here. Give this place a try. It's close to a lot of cute shops and dessert places. read more

I miss Austin, Texas - especially the food and live music. When Cactus opened in Tacoma, I had my fingers, toes, legs, and eyes crossed for good TexMex food. I was not disappointed. My friend and I went to their brunch this past Saturday. I want to start with the employees because I feel this is the best part of Cactus. I have never experienced, across the board, consistently great customer service from everyone in an organization quite like Cactus. Every employee has been helpful, thoughtful, and generally happy with life. Whatever you are doing, Cactus, keep it up. Our waitress (whose name I have forgotten, sorry!) was an absolute joy and chock full of good information! She seemed to be happy and carefree - so nice to see genuinely happy people. Makes me feel better about the world. My friend and I ordered mimosas and they hit the spot. My friend ordered the spinach & avocado Cactus Benedict with grits instead of potatoes and I ordered the chorizo & egg skillet. So, so good and I had leftovers. My friend ate all of hers and didn't say much while eating, a rarity trust me. If you want good TexMex, I recommend heading over to Cactus in the Proctor District in Tacoma! And, as a bonus, if you can roll out of bed, and be able to function in public at 10am on a Saturday, there's no line at Cactus! read more

This location has easy, free parking within very close walking distance. We were greeted quickly and opted to take a seat in the bar. This location has a funky flare like the others I've been to, yet it also has its own vibe going on. The employees clearly work hard to keep everything nice and clean and it really showed! Service was a smidge slow, but it's brunch so it's all good! I went with a jackfruit chimichanga. I haven't had a chimichanga in forever and it was delightful! One of the things I like about Cactus is that they have rotating menus for seasonal items. I opted to go with a Holiday Thyme cocktail, which was excellent! I've never had a kumquat before so I was happy to fish one out to give it a try. Turns out I kinda hate them! Very surprised, but I'm happy that I know that (and it didn't ruin the drink at all). MY new favorite spot. We started with the guacamole that has bacon in it. Delicious! I love how fresh their chips are that they serve you. My shrimp fajitas were very good and perfectly cooked. My husbands fish tacos and a lot of flavor. The most memorable thing I had were our margaritas, literally one of the best margaritas I've had. I can't wait to go back just so I can have one again! This was My first time here at Cactus (Tacoma) And Wow! Food was very tasty the meat was so tender and well seasoned. The costumer service was so polite from start to finish and I didn't even come dressed for the occasion since we were heading to Waffle Stop. I'm glad they were full. We frequent Cactus often and also lived in the east side, so also frequented both Kirkland and Bellevue locations. Good food, and really appreciate a good version of New Mexico Green Chili, hard to find here in the PNW. The reason for 4 versus 5 stars is a bit of inconsistency....especially when ordering takeout (not delivery). Case in point, we stopped by ordered a drink, chips and salsa, and proceeded to order an order to go. The order to go was a mess. The first miss was to bring us the bag of food with a salad...to eat at the bar. Okay, I get it, ordered the chips and salsa while we placed our to-go...confusion happens. My thought was, we are sitting at the bar and a random salad not included in the takeout seems, well odd....why not ask a quick question??? Did you want the salad to go too? But instead, the salad got dumped upside down into a container and was a mess. Okay, again, I get it. We asked for some flour tortillas and we received a wadded up, par cooked 4 tortillas. It was really bad and not edible. I am assuming that on order, tortillas are put on a flat top and finished (they are normally pretty tasty) but these were a dough ball and hard to even pull apart to finish in a pan. Again, overall we like Cactus and I am super biased growing up in Colorado with so much great Mexican food and choices. We will be back, but 5 star, no. read more

I have been eating here since early 2000's -Kirkland location, Madison park...all of them at this point. Post Covid it has been so disappointing Portions are WAY smaller. The Tacoma location is always understaffed, which means even tho there are several tables the wait is 45 min, on a Tuesday at 4:45! Last time we sat at the bar, my margarita was half full So he added more ice when I inquired to why the glass was half empty. We left Fewer chips, less salsa, two small corn tortillas with the fajitas which is a plate of basically onions and a few peppers. Something that was once great, and we felt was a great value, not inexpensive but got more than enough and a fair price. It is now higher prices and less, more average Mexican fare. Cactus has a date night or girls night out vibe. It's not a great place for little ones, although they do allow kids. Hopefully you aren't small because their bar stools are not moveable; I found myself, a taller woman, having to lean awkwardly from the edge of my seat to reach my food. Expect Tex-Mex; not Mexican, and no matter what you get, while it will be delicious, know that it will be overpriced. read more

My husband and I came in on Saturday at it was already packed at 5:30! A sign of a good restaurant! We decided on snagging two seats at the bar instead of waiting and our server was amazing- kind and attentive. My husband got the narrows IPA and I got the regular margarita. He loved his IPA and my margarita was amazing. You could tell the juice in the margarita was fresh. So delicious! Next, we ordered chips, salsa, and guacamole. The chips were hot, delicious, and perfect. The salsa was fresh and had the perfect amount of heat. The guacamole was also very fresh, seasoned well, and so, so good! For entrees, my husband got the brisket chimichanga and I ordered the prawn fajitas. His brisket chimichanga was phenomenal- tender and smokey meat. It almost felt like a fusion of bbq and Mexican combined. So amazing! As for my fajitas, they were some of the best fajitas I have ever had. The prawns were cooked to perfection and seasoned well. All of the components that go alongside the fajitas were fresh and absolutely delicious! This was one of the best Mexican meals I have had in years! The food was fresh, delicious and presentation of our meal was stunning. It is a beautiful restaurant you can tell is very loved. Our server was friendly and attentive, and even the Chef (paul) came to meet us! He explained how fresh all the ingredients were, everything being made in house, and even the history of the company. This dining experience was strongly sub par. It was $100 for dinner for three--including one $6 kids meal and no alcohol. Food: The asada was good, but not $40 good. The brisket tacos were one of the greasiest plates of food I've ever experienced. The kids flautas were decent, definitely the best bang for the buck! For a $100 meal I'd definitely expect the chips and salsa to be gratis, like a bread basket, they're not. Service: all employees were so nice! But also the service was oddly clunky. They have a QR menu that you can't actually order from--what's the point? Order was messed up and wrong thing brought, they fixed, no problem. Timing of staff was just off. At the end they wouldn't bring a box, insisted on taking plates and boxing for us. Waited over 10 minutes, boxes with food never brought back. Asked a host, she brings two boxes out, says "I'm pretty sure they're yours?" Like what? Where did the server who boxed them up go?? Also, they didn't box all the food--just some. So weird. My family is loyal to Taco Tuesday! Cactus had been in the Proctor neighborhood for a couple of years. I went once when it first opened and wa disappointed that they don't serve free chips and salsa! C'mon...all Mexican restaurants do! But that's it...it's not really true Mexican...it's Mexi-Americana...the food is good but not authentic, the ambiance is great but not authentic Latin American, the servers are great and well trained...the prices are a little steep but worth the quality of food. My absolute favorite...THE MUSIC! I swear I could get up and dance at any moment...oh...if it were only Miami or NYC...there for sure would be brave souls dancing the evening away. I discovered Cactus off North Proctor St through one of my friends visiting back in January last year while searching for restaurants with vegetarian options. It was one of many places we considered but ultimately chose to dine here. It's located in a peaceful area a few yards away from an apartment complex, a food market and Safeway. I've been to this location approximately five times. It has a very mature and chill vibe at-least on the nights I went. They have a very balanced menu with vegan and vegetarian options that would satisfy many customers. I thoroughly enjoyed the butternut squash enchiladas which I found to be savory and delicious! The service as always was on point. If you'd like tequilas, the Anejo Tequila flight is worth the experience. Be wary of parking between 5-8 pm on Friday and Saturday nights. Different location, but still same bland food. My best friend was recently telling me how she went to the Tacoma location and the food was amazing. So I figured I'd give it another try because I've heard great things about cactus. Now this was my first sit down experience since Covid started. The restaurant is aesthetically pleasing and they take all the Covid precautions from what I could see. With us being in phase 2 I highly suggest using the yelp app to reserve your spot in line because the wait anywhere right now with 25% capacity is long, especially for a group of 4. I was kicking myself in the butt when we got there because I wished we had made a reservation before arriving. We all ordered drinks and let me tell you this is where they shine! The drinks were good. But dinner just did not do it for any of us. I ordered the mushroom fajitas, two of my girlfriends did the fish tacos and I want to say the veggie enchiladas. My best feiend was laughing and apologizing because she knew once we tasted it that it was not great. Unfortunately I'm just not a fan of the food here or the Seattle location.
