I can't believe there was delicious dinner near a metro station. We shared cheese fondue and steak with whiskey pepper sauce

This place is incredible. Get the fondue and the steak - you won't be disappointed. The sauce on the steak is so good that the lady next to me picked up a big piece of lettuce from her salad and mopped up the sauce with it. It was weird but that tells you how amazing it is. Get a reservation or otherwise you can sit at the bar. There is a decent amount of turnover at the bar so if there is no space, leave for 45 minutes and come back. read more

I don't understand the super ratings. It's an adequate place for cheese. If you are dying for melted cheese, this is a place to go to. But, not much more. The fondue is served only with bread. So, that's a bit dull, in my opinion. Rolls upon rolls of bread with melted cheese. One can only have so much bread and cheese. The garlic salad that everyone speaks of is a big serving of crazy garlic sauce on wilted lettuce. So, overall, I don't think you'll get food poisoning or eat anything terrible. But, I can't imagine any reason I'd ever return. It's one of those ... "Meh..." dining experiences. read more

Freaking delicious. I just wish I could tell you in Dutch what we had! Started with the spicy salad of chopped carrots, pepper, coriander, cucumber, and onion. Super good and light, although I was hoping for bigger veggies to dip in the fondue. Fondue was just....sigh....cheesy, rich, gooey, stinky perfection. I want more NOW. Husband's pepper steak was also quite good, although I could have done with less sauce. The steak itself was really tender and juicy. I loved the hole in the wall feel of this darkly lit bar. Being from the US, I wasn't accustomed to having such amazing fondue! The cheese was exquisite and I've never had anything like it. The cheese fondue we ordered was the house favorite and had an extreme wine flavor to it. It took some getting used to. Didn't like it at first, but now I really miss that certain flavor in the cheese. The environment is also very cozy and nice at dinner. Lighting makes for warm ambience especially in the snowy winter time. But expect to spend an extremely extremely long time waiting for someone to take your order and get your food. I guess this is typical in Holland but it was upsetting to lil ole hungry me. I will definitely be back when I visit Amsterdam next! read more

Definitely one of the best places to eat in Amsterdam! We tried the cheese and steak fondue and it was delicious! We had to book to go here as it was very busy and seemed to be full of locals I definitely recommend trying here because the food is delicious! You would easily walk past this restaurant as the sign is not very vibrant but don't miss it because the food is great the menu is translated by the staff if you don't understand and they make great suggestions! The cheese fondue with the steak in the special herb sauce was absolutely delicious and a must try for anyone in Amsterdam! read more

Entrecote fondue. Garlic salad. Nom nom nom nom. That's right - went to a fondue restaurant but didn't have the typical dip veg, bread, meet into melted cheese fondue. But that's ok. Better than ok. Instead the entrecote fondue is rare steak served with a cooled, herbalicious sauce. Placed on the flame, the sauce melts and the steak cooks just a lil bit more. Frankly, I thought the rare steak was served perfectly but I like my cow still mooing when I eat it. I just barely swished the steak around in the sauce, just to warm it slightly. Mmmmm. They do serve a LOT of bread with dinner. I sopped up the garlic dressing from the salad with the bread. And mopped up the remainder of the fondue sauce. But all in all, I'm pretty sure I ate a half a loaf of French bread so I'm not sure how full I would actually have been if I were less of a carbaholic and just ate the salad and steak/fondue. The decor inside is simple. The service is fast. It really was a pleasant dining experience and will definitely be back. read more

I was in Belgium with mom, brother, his gf and my man for two days. We wanted fondue and figured we'd get some in Antwerp. The places we wanted to try in Antwerp were closed on a Tuesday so we came back to Amsterdam. I thought my options were Gollem and Fonue & Fondue. I heart Gollem but wanted more than ust one option for fondue and F&F didn't blow my mind the last time I was there. I checked yelp on my mobile and found Cafe Bern. Called to make a reservation (so glad we did) and had one for 7:45...the place was packed for a Tuesday. We ordered the garlic salad...so freaking good! Cheese fondue for 4 people and the entrecote. This is really a top notch place. The fondue is delicious and I even had a taste of the entrecote...which is fantastic. We also ordered house red wine...a nice accompanyment. This place is local, coze, gezzelig, and won't break the bank. This is a restaurant I'll take visitors to in the future. Cash only! and don't be late for your reservation. read more

Holy smoly, this is amazing fondue. Probably the best I've ever had. The fondue is winey, melty, cheesy, rich, herby goodness that I cannot seem to replicate nor find elsewhere. The Entrecote is also superb - the beef is sliced raw, then you cook it in a rich bernaise-ish sauce. Yum. The 'garlic salad' is picquant, fresh, and great to cut through all that richness. For something similar, but slightly different than your typical salad, go for the 'Jewish salad.' Peppery, garlicy, crunchy. The atmosphere is cozy, but definitely not quiet! But it's a place to sit, enjoy the company, your wine, your awesome food, and relax. I'd highly recommend going in and making a reservation early, or don't be afraid to share tables if you don't, since a table seems to be difficult to procure. read more

I'd say for fondue, this place is exceptional. It was everything we expected. I found this place based on reviews that had been written by other people. We went there on a Tuesday and it was entirely sold out. No worries though, because you can eat at the bar. We ordered one cheese fondue and one of beef filet. Each are served in separate dishes, so it is a good idea to share. I've had fondue in Switzerland and this place was as good as anything I've ever tasted. One of the hard things about coming to Amsterdam is finding good restaurants. There are literally a thousand places to choose from, all within .5 miles of each other. Because of this, I have had many disappointing meals over the years. My suggestion is to read carefully the quantity and quality of the reviews given by other users for various establishments. Cafe Bern is deserving of five stars - you will enjoy your meal. read more

Ambience: Bar outside, small tables inside, enough space for you, your people and your fondue pot. - servers are nice, there is a very nice lady that runs the front and even though we didn't have reservations (as a lovely wandering tourist, I would never have known to make one! I don't even have a phone) she let us sit at the bar outside and then got us seated in 30 mins. Awesome! Things we ordered (that we ordered again in the same meal, cause we're Americans and gross): - tomato salad: fresh, sweet, tomato tasting tomatoes, sliced like a flower sprinkled with what we could only guess was olive oil, salt, and red wine vinegar. I could swim in it. It cuts the cheesiness of the fondue with an acidic balance that makes you want to squish up your face in glee. - garlic salad: geeeeeeeeeeez. The tastiest dressing! It's basically lettuce and dressing. But, the garlic flavor in one bite with cheese in the other. My cup of tea, but I am also a huge lover of garlic. Hubs was not as in love with it, but he did devour the tomato salad. And then I ordered another one. - cheese fondue: perfect. Thick, rich, beautiful. - we didn't order the meat, since we don't eat beef. The guys across from us did and the three of them left with big smiles. Restrooms in the back, they were kind to us with a child. Well- summary, cheese, bread, a stringy ooey goodness of cheese strung around a mini grilled cheese I made on my fork of tomato, bread and cheese...I left full and sleepy. Believe it or not I had never really had fondu until the ripe old age of 32. Glad I waited to try it here while on holiday with the wife. We used Yelp to help steer our way for lunch and dinner. We tried cafe bern for dinner and sat at the bar where we were sat immediately. We ordered steak fondu cooked in a pesto sauce. Very similar to Korean BBQ we cooked it to our own liking. The sauce and meat was awesome. We also had the classic cheese fondu which comes with two baguettes per person which is perfect. I would have never found this place without yelp so I commend the previous posters. I would absolutely try this place again if/when I back in Amsterdam. The server was remiss and greeting us upon entry. Then when we sat at a window seat, we could not open the curtains. So we chose to open them anyway. Her response was it does not look good from the outside. Completely ignoring the five completely unbossed tables outside in the full ashtrays on the tables. Rude staff. My friend and I went to have dinner and entered the restaurant as three parties were leaving. We were told that the tables were reservation only and that we should come back in two hours (yup TWO HOURS) to eat at the bar. There was space at the bar, but I guess we weren't welcome to eat at the bar at that time either. The host was loud and made us feel like we were to blame for them supposedly not having any space for us. One of the worst experiences we had whilst visiting Amsterdam. Recently we were in Amsterdam, and looking for a restaurant. Decided to walk to a small fondue place, it was well worth the long wall. We had no reservations so we had a small wait and then were seated at the bar. The staff was extremely friendly and helpful in placing an order. The fondue was outstanding and the meat dish heavenly. We are here on our final night in Amsterdam. Fondue was excellent and the beef with a creamy pesto like sauce was killer. They sear the beef leaving the beef undercooked so you can finish it in the hot sauce. The menu is in Dutch don't let that discourage you, the staff are very helpful. A Dutch friend of ours took us to this restaurant when we were in town one weekend in Amsterdam. The cheese was delicious! We also ordered the restaurant's most popular dish which is the seared steak with herb sauce - you get to cook the rest of the steak yourself at the table, which was pretty entertaining. It's only a little disappointing that you only get bread with your cheese but the steak made up for that :) The price seemed a little bit expensive, we paid about $30 each. But fondue places tend to be and the food was pretty good so we didn't complain too much, it was worth it. read more

Tried to look for cheese fondue on Yelp and Google our way here, only to find out they claim all tables were reserved. As tourists we asked if we can wait for a table, the waitress simply turned and walked away. Had to flag down another waiter and he said they were fully booked and we could not even wait for a table, although there was an empty table right at the front with no "reserved" sign on it. The food was really good. We had the cheese fondue and the entrecôte (steak). The cheese was phenomenal however they don't give you enough of it- we also loved dipping the bread in cheese and then the steak sauce! The steak was delicious once you figure out how long to cook each piece. We ordered the ice cream with liquor sauce which was good but it needed something. All in all there wasn't enough food for the price so we left still hungry but the food we had was very good. The main thing to make this three stars is that we were sitting enjoying our wine and the waiter came over and told us to leave so they could put someone at our table. Such a cute little place just down the street from our hotel. We had just arrived in Amsterdam after a 10-hour flight that consisted of a cute little girl torturing me by crying for a big chunk of time, followed by a dreadful connection in Paris. We needed sustenance with no frills. Cafe Bern provided us with just that. We strolled past the bustling patios filled with 20- and 30-somethings drinking beers to come into this little gem for a quiet meal. We got the tomato salad which was super fresh and tasty. Then got a cheese fondue that's totally hit the spot, as well as the beef, which I will describe almost as Dutch hot pot. The beef is seared, and cut into little bite sized pieces, and the plate with some pesto/chimichurri sauce is heated over a little flame at your table. You cook each morsel of goodness in the sauce. Yum! This was the perfect meal to satisfy some weary travelers. As the place really filled up, would recommend reservations. Great spot! read more

Fantastic! Cafe de Waag stopped serving dinner so we walked across the street to this easy to miss gem. It looked like a locals hangout--everyone spoke Dutch. Great ambience and relaxed, happy vibe. Not a surly looking person in the place. The bartenders and servers were super nice and friendly and the menu was simple. Good meat, good cheese fondue, good bier, and delicious chocolate mousse. yup we got the kaas fondue! it was great. we were a party of 3 and got enough for 3 and 2 salads. The guy sitting next to me at our communal table highly suggested the garlic salad. i'm glad i took his advice. it was very good. garlicky but not overloaded. we had ordered kaas fondue for 3 but felt that 2 probably would have been enough. we were painfully trying to finish it and had to roll each other out of the restaurant... i was also eying the beef fondue our neighbors had. it looked and smelled amazing. it came on a metal platter with a green garlicky butter sauce that melted and oozed all over the meat. Also... the customer service at this restaurant was wonderful. our waitress was so friendly and they also give free tap water here. something that can be hard to find in amsterdam. i know that this restaurant heavely requires a reservation but we had gotten there late enough, about 9pm and was able to get a table without a reservation. read more
