Made a reservation the day before. We got the entrecote and fondue (per other reviewers). I freaking loved it. For the price I absolutely give this a 5* review. Loved the vibe of the small restaurant, uniqueness of the food, and superb taste. A+

Steak with her bed butter

We stumbled on this place at 10pm and decided to try it. Staff is extremely friendly and the food was delicious! Their small menu is only in Dutch but the workers were patient to explain everything to us. We ended up getting a fondue, two salads, a prime steak that you cook your own in a butter herb sauce (the steak comes out sliced, seared on the outside, and raw on the inside and you cook it to your preference in the butter). I also had a wonderful local saisson. We ended the meal with some chocolate mousse! This was our best meal in Amsterdam so far!!

It's a cozy and casual restaurant. Although it was busy, there was a steady flow of tables flipping and people being seated. I shared a tomato salad, an order of fondue with steak, and found it to be enough between two considering the amount of bread we also ate. The tomato salad is fresh and topped with raw onions. It's a good contrast to the rich fondue. The fondue has a pretty strong beer taste. The steak comes raw so you let it cook for a bit over the heated plate before enjoying. Best on a cold evening.

Fondue & Garlic Salad

A real gem right in Amsterdam. I showed up before the kitchen had opened, so I got a drink that was recommended by the bar tender, a delicious prosecco that was only €5/glass! I had read reviews about the fondue and knew that I needed to order it, which was so incredibly delicious and somehow they managed to make a portion for 1! The bartender also recommended the garlic salad, which came with the most amazing dressing. I will be recommending everyone go here when visiting Amsterdam! Since I was by myself, I got to chatting with the bartenders and they were so incredibly delightful, taking good care of this American in a Dutch Restaurant! Definitely a spot for the locals!

Entrecôte

This restaurant was suggested to us by a great friend who frequents Amsterdam and it did not disappoint. Seems to be more of a local hangout more than a tourist spot. Due to other reviews on Yelp, he ordered the entrecôte and the fondue and we were not disappointed. The fondue was strong and came with plenty of bread. The entrecôte was on a bed of pesto type sauce. Both were extremely tasty. Staff was indifferent but did their job well. Space was cozy with a homey feel. It was a pleasant surprise on our Amsterdam visit.

Based on the reviews, we walked in to have our first meal in Amsterdam and it did not disappoint. We ordered the fondue and steak with pesto sauce that you cook. Both very good! Menu is very small but there seemed to be a large selection of drinks (including wine on tap). The steak comes lightly seared but raw, and you "cook" the sliced meat in a pesto sauce on a metal plate that sits above a flame. Love that you can cook it according to your preference and the sauce was really delightful. The fondue tasted really strong at first but we kept eating it!! For two, we ordered one of each and a salad came with the meal (presumably with the meat), which tasted really crisp and fresh.

Bread with cheese fondue and sliced beef

An epic night of fondue and one of my favorite dinners I've had on this trip. Somehow we squeaked in without a reservation, and me and my friend managed to get sat at a table within a few minutes - next time I'd probably reserve a table for fear of missing out. Our server was very friendly and explained their fondue system - they had unlimited bread but no other pairings with the cheese, so he recommended us to get the pairing of 1 pot of cheese with a platter of meat - each would have their own small stove beneath. We ordered exactly that. It came with a small salad that me and my friend split - I'd recommend getting something a bit more to supplement if you have 2 people eating salad. Both cheese and meat came out at the same time and we started simmering a few pieces of meat and dug into the cheese - a classic Swiss-guyere mix, totally delicious. The meat simmered in a nice sauce - absolutely couldn't tell you its contents - and we made our way through that too. Once finished, we quenched the stoves, and our server returned a few moments later. A lovely fondue experience.

Delicious. Super traditional fondue. I got the meat & cheese cause I wanted to try both. So fire.

Meat was super tasty Cheese tasted a little wine-y tasting. Bread is fantastic. I love this place. You know a place is good if it's mostly ALL locals & it was. Which made me know I was in the right place when I entered. Super fire. Menu is in all Dutch as well

Wow! what a find! On our last nite in Amsterdam we HAD to have fondue and did a quick yelp search and found Cafe Bern, a true local's gem. The entire menu was in dutch and simple so when us tourists arrived we didn't feel overwhelmed. The waitress was extremely helpful and we just let her choose our meal (steak and fondue) and chose a house wine. I was so pleased with the atmosphere, experience, service and food. 5 stars!

The Cafe Bern is a quaint cafe on the Nieuwmarkt in Amsterdam justly famous for their Swiss fondue. This was my second visit, after first coming to the Cafe Bern more than five years ago on a trip to Amsterdam with my wife. I'm very happy to say that although the character of the Cafe Bern has changed the fondue is as delicious as ever. I went on a Tuesday night and prudently got a reservation first, since the cafe was very busy. This isn't the sort of place that you can drop by and expect to be seated, although they do serve food at the bar. They have a wide selection of beers, wines (including Swiss wines) and liquors available and a limited menu including salads, entrees such as spaghetti and steak, and some desserts. Although the other food looked delicious, you should do yourself a favor and get the fondue. It's a little on the pricey side, but well worth it. The service was friendly and efficient. The ambiance was great, but the Cafe now has a little more modern look than the last time I visited and the clientele was also a bit more cosmopolitan. This didn't take away from our meal, but it had changed from the last time I visited. If you find yourself in Amsterdam and enjoy eating copious amounts of cheese with french bread you should definitely try out Cafe Bern. Highly recommended.

Entrecote and fondue

Came here on a Saturday night and all the tables were filled by customers with reservations (so make reservations!). Luckily, the bar was completely open so we opted to sit there. There are two things this restaurant specializes in : Fondue and Entrecote. Fondue: This was the best fondue I've ever had in my life. It was delicious from start to end and I couldn't get enough of it. Usually, a fondue has me sick of the flavor by the 5th bite, but this simply wasn't the case. Creamy, gooey, flavorful...the dutch got this baby right. Entrecote: The concept for this dish is that you cook the meat yourself, which is just part of the fun. The quality of the meat was good and who doesn't love a pesto sauce flavored by butter, garlic, and herbs?? As our last meal in Amsterdam, my wife and I wished it would've been our first so that we could've returned and had more. They also serve a few beers AND wine on tap, which was pretty awesome. They serve the wine in 1/4, 1/2, and full caraffe's and check this, by volume, it's cheaper than beer. 5 stars all the way.

Yummy fondue if you can find a table. Lovely intimate spot where locals go. Would return for sure if in the area.

If you are sharing a meal with someone, get items from a different prix-fixe menu and you can both try a variety of items. We enjoyed: * Charcuterie plate: sausages taste minimally processed and delicious * Beef and onion stew: taste slightly different than ones in America * Cauliflower and cheese oven bake: vegetarian's comfort food * Hutspot (mashed potatoes and carrots) and meatballs: non-vegetarian's comfort food * Pea soup with smoked ham For desserts, we had chocolate mousse and vlaflip (vanilla custard) and they were just okay. I'm not sure if desserts are the Dutch's strengths, except maybe the Dutch apple pie. They even bottle their own house beer. The restaurant is small. Try to make a reservation if you can. We didn't have a reservation, but went to the restaurant at around 5PM and were seated in about 15 minutes. At times, the line could get very long, but the staff is still welcoming and ensures that everyone gets served...eventually.

Portions are substantial and a very good value in a neighborhood where tourist-markups are the norm. They have a/c, but in order to feel it you'll need to sit closer to the back of the restaurant/near the kitchen, as there is only one wall unit back there, and they leave the front of the restaurant open to the elements (even in 98+ degree heat).

It all looked appealing and would've totally purchased a food item, had we not had lunch beforehand. Throughout the store were the cheese samples of the many different various kinds. It goes beyond what you thought gouda could be. There are sheep's and goat's cheeses for many of the different types. There are pesto cheeses that come in different colors like a bright blue and pink. There are cheeses that pair well with the dips that had me thinking about my next dinner party. There's Dutch chocolate here for sale. There's different knives for cutting cheese. There's truly everything here you could imagine for your gouda-filled meal. Staff was super friendly and asked if we needed any help or wanted to know more about any of the different cheeses. For sale, a lot of the goudas are pre-packaged for a pound and meets airline security measures for taking it home with you. I'm glad we stumbled upon Dutch Delicacy. We were able to try so many different cheeses, which I found a few for home. I recommend for anyone visiting Amsterdam to make a stop here; there's a lot of items you'll want to take home with you.
