We came here to celebrate my sister's birthday while on holiday in Europe. It was highly recommended by our hotel and on Yelp so we figured we'd give it a try. It did not disappoint. The only disappointment is that all of us will never be able to enjoy fondue again after having this amazing experience. It is a small restaurant so make sure to make reservations if you plan on going, especially for dinner. The service was amazing, and our waiter was attentive and able to help us choose which dishes and how much of each we needed for our four person party. We had the meat fondue as well as the cheese fondue. These came with salads and as much bread as you like. We also had the chocolate mousse for dessert and had an excellent wine. The highlight of the dinner was definitely the meat, or to be more specific, the delicious sauce the meat came in. We practically licked the plate clean with the bread. As if this wasn't good enough, the price for all of this was unbelievably fair, though we would have gladly paid more for the tremendous meal we had enjoyed. Insanely crowded, boring fondue that took an entire hour to arrive. They have people waiting for your seat, I don't know why, so they don't really care if you are happy, they seem to just want you to pay -- your expensive bill, and leave. read more

We decided to try based on the reviews and were absolutely pleased with our choice. We had the fondue with bread, the entecrote (steak cooked in a pesto sauce) and tomato salad. It was so good! Highly recommend you have a reservation. We went on a Tuesday night and it was packed. Our hotel tried to make us a reservation for 7:30, but couldn't get us in until 8:30. Went in there knowing that there were two dishes to get: cheese fondue and entrecôte. Both of them quite tasty I have to admit. I would suggest to eat the fondue before the entrecôte (and not together) as the herby sauce of the steak overpowers too much the cheese taste. It's hard to judge a restaurant for only two dishes, but they were well executed. Only three stars because I was expecting the bread to be freshly baked and crunchy, while it tasted like store bought soft bread. Crowded little joint attest to its popularity. Many locals. When we visited for dinner, most outdoor tables were occupied by singles and smokers, so we were seated inside, squeezed on the end of a table of locals. Didn't mind this. We didn't intrude on them, and they were quite cordial. The menu was only in Netherlanse, so we had to rely on our waiter for recommendations and he made communications very brief. We had the beef dish, a small tenderloin portion, I think, and cheese fondue We expected a salad with each main, but only one arrived, So we shared. The garlic sauce of the beef dish was tasty and superior to the cheese fondue. Couldn't tell what the cheese was, but based on an internet recipe. It was probably a wine ingredient that I didn't like. Gotta admit it was my first restaurant fondue; so will likely try again, elsewhere. Recommended? Not really. read more

I really like Cafe Bern. If you like fondue or have never tried it, then this would be a good place to check out. Both the cheese fondue and entrecote fondue are amazing. It's usually pretty crowded, so do make a reservation - and as someone else pointed out, depending on your group size, you might wind up sharing a table in the back with some others if it's really crowded. I like the old-fashioned wooden decor of the place - the service can be a bit hit or miss, I must say, but last time it was excellent. They only accept cash, so don't expect to use your bank or credit card - luckily, there's a bank machine right outside in case you forget. It's also very conveniently located next to a metro stop (Nieuwmarkt) if you're coming from across town - also not too far a walk from Central Station. read more

One of my favorite things in the world is fondue and Cafe Bern is as authentic as you can get. I believe they take reservations but we walked up and were able to sit at the bar. We were served quickly and the staff was really friendly especially since they didn't have an English menu. Our server walked us through the menu items and was super attentive our entire visit. Great cheese fondue, nice cozy restaurant. Had a group of 6.5 and my toddler was entertained with a box of crayons and markers they had available. Also had the beef cooked table top alongside the cheese fondue, but personally liked the cheese better. The cheese was not as pungent as other Swiss fondue I've had, thank you for that! as so excited to try this place based on reviews. For two days, I tried to visit th le location and both days they were closed even though Yelp listed them as open. Nonetheless, on the third day we happened to be nearby, and it was open! Yay! The menu is tiny! But since we were there for the cheese and the meat, I didn't mind. That is until the cheese and meat arrived. The steak was extremely bland with not even salt, and the cheese had the oddest sour flavor. I tried to eat it several times until I asked my friend if this was indeed the flavor of fondue, as this was my first time having this kind of meal. An avid fondue lover, she said it wasnt the worst cheese she'd ever had but it definitely was no where near the best. I tried to order something else, because I disliked the flavor that much even though I'm a crazy cheese lover, but as a sad looking plate of spaghetti walked by, I changed my mind and decided to grab something somewhere else. Cute little cafe. First dinner in Amsterdam. I made a reservation just in case it was super packed, but it wasn't. I came with 2 other people. We ordered the cheese fondue, and a meat with pesto sauce and another steak with pesto sauce & pasta on the side. The cheese fondue was really strong. The cheese itself kind of tasted like beer was included in it. It was a little too strong for my boyfriend. I really liked the meat dish, it came similar to the fondue, with fire running below it. They gave us the meat with a plate of sauce & the meat on the side of the sauce. We waited for the sauce to boil so we can cook our meat in the sauce. It was a pretty cool experience. The steak was extremely tender and it was really delicious too. The house wine was not exactly how I like my wine. A little too dry. The vibe is very similar to most restaurants in Amsterdam. Just attempted to have dinner at this place. The fondue came highly recommended. Quickly however, it devolved into what probably is my worst dining experience to date. We sat down at the bar of this small dining establishment, several other people were having dinner at the bar too. The bartender seemed nice enough, a tall fellow in a blue collared shirt (later i learned he goes by Meijnders). Boy was i wrong. After ignoring my request for water, which i can forgive, he stated i could get it from the tap in the bathroom. Haha right. He was serious. We relocated to a more central part of the bar, hoping to make his life easier. He briskly asked us whether we would be having dinner. We said yes, we were looking forward to that fondue. He asked if we wanted a table. We replied, jokingly, "what, are you trying to get rid of us?" At which point he replied, "yes, as a matter of fact, why dont you go somewhere else". He snatched our menu's away, and asked us to leave. We were ASTOUNDED. Wtf just happened?? I asked him why he was asking us to leave, just to triple check he wasnt fucking around. He was not. "Go find a place more suitable to your needs". Probably the look on my face was so utterly perplexed that I drew in a waitress. She was nice, and apologetically said that we could grab a table to eat. Apparently this wasnt the first time something like this had happened. I politely thanked her, but I'll take my business someplace else. I calmy directed my now teary-eyed girlfriend towards the exit, promising her we would never, ever, return to Cafe Bern on the Nieuwmarkt. read more
