Cafe Blue is located on the 6th floor of the BOH building. Who knew they had a cafe there! If I had known about this place when I was working in downtown I would of frequented it more often! Came here one day on my friend's lunch break. The place was pretty empty but we came after lunch hours. The menu is pretty simple but they have sandwiches, salads and daily specials.. everything sounded good. I had a hard time deciding what to get but had this sudden craving for a tuna melt. So I got the tuna melt w/spinach which comes with a choice of a salad or fries. Typically I'd ordered the fries but I was trying to eat "healthier" so settled for the salad. If you're looking for a clean, no-frills eatery that consistently offers simple (but tasty!) & affordable grub, Cafe Blue is the place to be. Some of my friends swear by this place--they especially love the burgers--but I usually end up going with one of the daily specials. The food has always been decent--and great portions--but not particularly memorable. Essentially, this is diner-style food in a hospital cafeteria-type environment...which is good, if that's what you're in the mood for. And while there's nothing special about Cafe Blue's interior decor, I do like that the dining area is so bright & spacious...seriously, I've never seen it more than half-filled, even at peak lunch time! And in downtown Honolulu--where swarms of lunch-goers normally cram themselves into every decent lunch spot within a 3-block radius, every day at the stroke of noon--the wide open spaces of Cafe Blue are a welcome oasis. Overall, I'd say this place is at least 3.5 stars...maybe 3.75...but I'm fine with rounding-up b/c I think the "secret location" really adds something as well, hehehe. ;D Seriously, there's just something kinda cool / fun about walking through the bank & getting into the elevator, which most people think is limited to bank employees. I feel like this is one of those reviews that I should write under a pseudonym or under the guise of a blurred photo of me to prevent my identity...Let me explain, I work for a competing financial institution and it almost comes across as if I sold part of my soul to the devil....oh well, I went with co-workers so it can't be all that bad? Now on to the review... Cafe Blue is located on the 6th floor above the Bank of Hawaii main branch and you have to walk through the branch to get to the elevator and once on the floor, make a left and follow the signs since it is somewhat tucked away. However, once there it is a bright and airy cafeteria environment that is meant for Bankoh employees but is open to the public to enjoy. The menu showcases a good array of plate lunches, sandwiches, soups, and salads that will please the palate but certainly isn't wow-ing. It's filling and the pricing is extremely reasonable. It makes it a pretty damn good spot to get lunch in my book. The Reuben sandwich was respectable and the fries were well-prepared with a crunchy shell and a soft steamy center. The Kalua pig sandwich was good with a nicely flavored kalua pig that could have used another hour in the oven, but was nothing to sneer at. The soups are quite the showpiece with the tomato bisque giving Nordstrom a run for their money and the vegetarian chili offering a hearty spice that makes it bold and tasty. Like some others have shared, you might want to avoid the 12-1 hour as a lot of people tend to take lunch in that hour and the line can back up. Perhaps plan on going about 10-15 minutes before it to miss the rush. All in all, prices are reasonable and the food is good. Came to have lunch with a coworker that works in the building. While it is open to the public it seems like it's mostly Bank workers (and their guests) the food isn't bad but it's nothing spectacular either. I suppose if you can't leave the building or you are short for time this will do but I think there are far better places right outside of the building within walking distance for the same price or less. Located on th 6th floor inside Bank of Hawaii in Downtown, this place is well HIDDEN!! I first discovered this place on a lunch uye (unofficial yelp event). Now that I look back, I'm pretty glad I went, otherwise, I don't think I would think to venture inside a bank and randomly look for a restaurant! Cafe Blue has reasonably price food and a variety of pretty decent food. They also have daily speccials. Burgers and fries are good, chicken pesto sandwiches are good... A gem tucked away in a tower is how I could describe this quaint cafe. Located on the 6th floor of the Bank of Hawaii tower there is seating both inside or outside depending on your mood. I have tried their crispy chicken wrap, chicken panini, ahi sandwich, ahi lemon caper special, mini breakfast, and veggie snack cup. Prices are very reasonable and everything well seasoned. I'd like to highlight two dishes above because they wowed me- the chicken panini and the ahi lemon caper plate. With both chicken and fish I always approach weary because establishments, especially when prices so low, tend to over cook and not season well. I never had this problem at Cafe Blue. The chicken panini came on a ciabatta bread with garlic aioli, mixed greens, tomato and cheese. The chicken was very moist and the garlic aioli very tasty! You can get it with fries or a salad- both won't steer you wrong. The ahi lemon caper special was also a tango in my mouth. Salty and buttery, the plate came with salad and two scoops of rice. For $8 you got two ahi steaks with lots of lemon caper sauce over everything. The same plate would cost you at least $12-$14 at the usual plate lunch joint. I'm sad that I'm done with training because I could eat here every day and for every meal. Also, if you participate in lent every Friday is a fish special! Love love love it. read more

8.5.13. I have to admit I was a little intimidated to seek out this cafe, mainly because it is tucked away at the the top of a bank. Another Yelper likened the experience to joining a "secret society" & I would have to agree! For those that are a little hesitant about finding this location like I was, I'll try to explain it in a way that I would find helpful. If you've ever been to the BOH building with the tellers (Financial Plaza), this is the place! If you enter from the Bishop Street entrance, head past the customer service person and find the elevators on your left. There should be a security guard at a podium/desk; don't worry you only need to check in if you're planning to be a "guest" on floors 2-5. If you're still feeling nervous just be confident & act like you know what you're doing--there usually will be others catching the elevator with you :) When you enter the elevator, I think you may need a badge to be able to push the buttons...luckily there were other riders with me so that I didn't have a problem going up (going down you don't need a badge). The cafe is located on the 6th, topmost floor & shares the space with BOH's Surfrider Room. When you exit the elevator on the 6th floor there should be signs directing you to Cafe Blue! This place is set up cafeteria-style, although the ambiance is much more modern. Very clean and is a nice "getaway" from the busyness of downtown; also has a decent view...both outdoor and indoor table available first come, first dibs! For those looking for a quick grab and go, there are already prepared meals like sandwiches & salads. They even have pudding and jello! I keep thinking it will get better... but it just doesn't... it's just the food...just... THE FOOD... They have all kinds of food from sandwiches to paninis to soups. Their chicken noodle soup is really good. I've also had their brown fried rice which just didn't taste fresh or great. The kalua pork quesadillas were meh, the components of a quesadilla are supposed to flow together but this one felt forced, the fries were good tho. I've also tried their panini which was ok. Maybe I just haven't picked the right food items... but I feel like every time I pick something new I expect it to be great, and always leave feeling like I wish I had eaten somewhere else. o_o THE PRICES... It's pretty reasonable here and compares to most places downtown. THE LOCATION/ATMOSPHERE: It very much so feels like a cafeteria but I do like the large space. They have TV's and carpet (feels relaxed). I also like that there's an outside seating area. How do I review my beloved cafeteria? This is like reviewing my dear friend. Once you know it, you love it so much and you just can't imagine why anyone wouldn't love it too. Cafe Blue is a cafeteria, but so much more. They always have lots of vegetarian and healthy options, including multiple salads, sandwiches, and soups. They have a consistent menu of burgers, sandwiches, and paninis and then one to two specials of the day. They have breakfast and lunch only, although the breakfast is much more limited. Highlights: I love the Green Destiny juice. Don't know what it is, but I like to think its the same as what the lady drinks in the Thomas Crowne Affair. Like, mysterious and powerful juice. The Burger is one of the best burgers, ever. My brother went from having a terrible day to having a fantastic happy day after eating a burger here. On Fridays at 1:30, any item in the cold case is 1/2 off. This includes the magical banana brulee pudding. This restaurant is very affordable. The cold case sandwiches are only $5! read more

As a Bankoh employee, it is nice to have a nice (affordable!) place to eat downtown. Cafe Blue recently opened and I appreciate the customer service and quality food. The Cafe employees always have a smile on their face and ready to help you out. I had their fresh catch fish sandwich today (mahi mahi) and it was so good. It took a little longer to get my lunch, but well worth it knowing it isn't pre-made. Fried Rice Fridays is very popular and it is nice to know that you can get smaller servings on some items which is nice if you have a smaller appetite. There are flat screen TVs on -- usually showing some cooking shows -- and lots of seating -- indoor and outdoors. Cafe Blue is open to the public as well. So come on by and enjoy breakfast or lunch on the 6th floor with nice views of the downtown area. read more

The last time I visited Cafe Blue, I had pretty bad food poisoning and was bed ridden for a whole day. Hidden Gem is the word. It definitely took me some time to figure out how to get there, I was like in the bank? On what floor? These elevators? I turn where? Once I got passed all of that, I was like this is AH-mazing. It has a cafeteria vibe with things ready to go, but you can also order great sandwiches and other such things from the kitchen. There's inside and outside seating. It's always amazing at how being a few feet above the hustle and bustle of downtown can be so tranquil. I had an italian meat sandwich that made me smile. Whether you're looking for a nice place to sit down and have lunch with coworkers or just grabbing food to go, Cafe Blue is a great place to go to. It's located on the 6th floor of the Bank of Hawaii building, so it is centrally located downtown and has a pretty nice view. But what I love most are their daily specials! It's the perfect venue for the next set-in-Hawaii Drew Barrymore/ Adam Sandler romcom. Or maybe Dwayne Johnson/ Margaret Cho? That could work actually. I could see them together. Margaret Cho is the straight-laced bank vice president and the Rock makes her a sandwich with side salad every day in Cafe Blue and then when her car breaks down on her way to visit her sister in Waianae he stops and gives her a ride on his motorcycle and love blossoms and he teaches her to surf and encourages her to live her dream of doing stand-up comedy at night and then they get tattoos together.... (wow I really want to see this movie) .... But back to Cafe Blue. They offer grab-and-go food as well as a made-to-order menu --- my sandwich was fine but unremarkable--- and the setting was pleasantly insulated and removed from the aromas of the street below. read more

I've had lunch here a number of times, and don't think I've ever been disappointed! I am obsessed with their quinoa salad and recently discovered their shrimp and orzo pasta salad! Don't get me wrong, they have good hot dishes - but those salads are soo good! I enjoyed the Italian panini made with handmade sausage, the soups are pretty good too. One guarantee (and running joke in my office) is that tomato bisque will always be one of the soups of the day! It is good though! They recently had black truffle mushroom soup, and me being a big truffle lover - I just had to get it! Twas a yummy lunch I had that day! They recently had garlic chicken, but I didn't really like it. There's also fountain drinks, Monster energy drinks, milk, bottled water, etc for purchase too. Some items like the regular sandwiches they sell ( egg salad, tuna, turkey, ham, etc.) are a bit pricey, but you can taste the quality that goes into it. Yesterday, since I had to do banking at the main branch of Bank of Hawaii in downtown, my friend and I decided to have lunch at Café Blue. To get to Café Blue, from inside the main bank lobby take the elevators to the 6th floor. If you enter the bank from Bishop Street, the elevators will be located to the left. Once you exit the elevator turn left and there will be a sign outside the door that reads, Café Blue. The café is set up cafeteria style with an assortment of sandwiches, panini, hot soups, pastries, desserts, salads, chili, burger and daily hot entrée specials. The main dining area is very spacious and clean and surrounded by glass windows which brings in the natural light. To make it complete they even have several flat screen TVs mounted on the wall for your enjoyment. The prices are very reasonable but be warned the portions are on the smaller side. I soon found out when I ordered a mini kalbi chicken plate for $4.95. With your choice of brown or white rice it does not include any salad. My mini plate included a very small scoop of brown rice and one chicken piece for $5.18 (tax included). It was very delicious and tasty and would have been great as a kalbi rib plate lunch. The disappointment was that it was not filling at all. My meal had worn off within two hours after eating lunch. If I had known the portions were going to be small, I would have definitely ordered the regular plate. read more

The BOH Cafe that was open to the public. There was a Yelp meet up that i missed. Kinda wish I went to that one. I had a luncheon with my friend Adam and I suggested we check out Cafe Blue. It was new and we both haven't tried it. We agreed. It was pretty easy to find. Just take the elevator to the 6th floor. We get there around 1 which the lunch crowd pretty much dissipated. The elevator opens to the 6th floor and it doesn't look anything close to a cafe. But we follow the signs and after a few corridors down, we find the nice big open space that is Cafe Blue. We look at the menu and we both decide what to get. Adam got the burger and I got the ahi Fish sandwich. Soda and meal was almost $10. For that I was thinking free refills on the soda and a nice big fish sand which. We get our order and we pop it open and i am VERY disappointed at the size of my burger and fish. I was like, is this a mini !?! It felt like my hands were bigger than my bun. It really felt like it was a mini burger, bordering on the side of a slider. Thing of it as a bigger slider and that's what the portion looked like. I got all toss greens so no fries that it normally comes with. You would think they would give a little big extra greens, they did not. Enough about how small the portion is for the price I paid, on to the taste. The taste was AMAZING. my Fish inside my sand which was cooked to perfection. and the mayo type sauce and onions they topped it with was AMAZING. another thing that was good was the salad dressing. I could pretty much drink the salad dressing because it was that good. Then after devouring my sandwich in like 2 minutes. we chat and gossip a bit and when we finally leave, i asked is there free refills cause i was out of soda and they said no. No free refills, small portions for almost $10 for lunch in downtown is defiantly a no bueno. Will i be coming back here again? Cafe Blue is so good and is too convenient to my office - I'm there for either breakfast or lunch a few times a week. I've tried a bunch of things on their menu including: * chicken katsu - best I've ever had. the tonkatsu was a bit too tangy for me. not always on the menu. * chicken and cheese quesadilla - much larger than I expected (insert "that's what she said" here). Comes with a dollop of guacamole. * BOH cheeseburger - 1/4lb. of Kauai beef! comes with french fries * tomato bisque - creamy and thick, just how i like it but it has a somewhat gritty texture. I usually pair the soup with a 1/2 vegetable wrap. * seafood chowder - amazing! and, they add kalua pork to it. not always on the menu though. * fried rice Fridays - I've gotten their fried rice twice; the first time it was perfect. The second time, I was a little disappointed that here wasn't much bits of meat. * spam musubi - the spam is panko coated; nice touch! You don't have to be a Bank of Hawaii employee to eat there. There's usually lots of seating available and they have a couple TVs, which I enjoy especially when dining alone. read more

Café Blue is one of those places where you won't be able to find unless you are specifically looking for it. It is located in the BOH building the one close to King street. You have to go inside and to the back where there is an elevator; take it to the 6th floor and make your way to the left. You do not have to be a BOH employee to eat here but it you are one and show the proper ID you are entitled to 20% off. If you come around 12 PM the line can get really long. I suggest coming from 11-12pm or 1-2pm where the wait time is not that long. Café Blue also has microwaves and Panini ovens if you want to heat up your own home lunch. This place reminds me of a cafeteria more than a "café" I came here twice, the first time I ordered the Reuben and the second time I ordered the Italian Sausage Panini. Both were sandwiches were good and I would recommend both of them however, I suggest ordering the salad instead of the fries. The fries were bland and somewhat soggy. I thought it would not be filling because of the size but after i was full. Not stuffed but satisified. read more

But it's in the Branch elevators and wowww, it's a swanky little place! Very nice and classy area (you've got all the bankers eating a nice lunch, but it is open to public and you get a discount if you're a BOH employee) Beautiful seating area with a couch section, outside seating overlooking the skyrises (but just buildings, nothing amazing just pretty). Customer service was good-cashier was very friendly and chatted with me) there's a few tvs to watch while you eat. Got the BOH burger and it was thick and juicy with delicious cheddar cheese!! Will have to come again. How many of you remember the Chicken Wrap from Kentucky Fried Chicken? Ok, for those of you that don't, for a while KFC was offering a limited selection healthy choice menu that included a chicken wrap. It was a simple tortilla wrap with lettuce, tomato, sauce and the chicken strips. Very simple, but tasted very good. About 7 years ago or so, they discontinued the item. (Bummer). So today, I went to an unconventional place to look for something different to eat. I went to Cafe Blue at Bank of Hawaii. I didn't know what to eat and decided on the Crispy Chicken Wrap w/French fries (comes with either fries or toss green salad). It was a good size looking wrap, heavy. I took a first bite and thought mmm, pretty good. By the time I was into the 5th bite, it totally reminded me of the KFC wrap that I used to like. It was really good. The chicken strips were crunchy on the outside and tender on the inside. There was lettuce, tomato and sauce just like KFC's. What a nice surprise I had. Anyway, I'm out 4 bites away from finishing, but I had to tap out. I couldn't even eat the fries. It's $7 and totally worth the price. If you're looking for some place different with a good variety and decent prices, I'd recommend Cafe Blue. It's above the Bank of Hawaii branch on King Street 6th floor. read more

I've been here twice so far, and I enjoyed both times. I like that this place is very clean and casual and has big TVs so you can just zone out while eating. The Chicken panini ($7.85) was tasty, but much too oily. The cheese plus the oil used to cook the chicken plus the pesto plus the butter used to "panini" the bread was just too much for me. I personally would not revisit that choice again, but other reviewers clearly like it, so it's worth a try if you like paninis. The Fresh Catch ($7.85 total) was mahi mahi with grilled onions and avocado on a sesame seed bun (I skipped the tartar sauce). For some reason, they forgot the avocado the first time around, but they were very nice about apologizing and giving me a side of avocado to add to the sandwich. The fish was soft, moist, and cooked just right. Like most cooked mahi, it was slightly fishy, but the seasoning, grilled onions and avocado masked the taste, and the overall flavor and texture were great! The fries were surprisingly good, served very hot and crispy on the outside, moist on the inside (just how I like em). It's a shame my stint working in downtown ends next week, otherwise I would come back again for the Fresh Catch. read more

Got to try it for the first time during my orientation and was surprised at how good it was for a "cafeteria" like setting. They have daily specials at very reasonable prices. I think the most expensive thing they had was like $10 or $12. The atmosphere is pretty relaxed, mostly full of bank employees, but you'll often times find the average Joe from off the street here. But, don't worry you can pick up the readymade foods, grab one of their daily specials, or order food made right when you order it. My friend chose the special while I opted for the Chicken Panini. You can choose a side toss salad or fries. Duh, this one is a no brainer...FRIES! The Chicken Sandwich served its purpose as I was starving. The chicken was cooked well and had good flavor. It was topped with tomato. It could have used a little sauce or something. I've ordered the chicken panini w/ fries (you can opt for a salad) and a side of tomato bisque. Everything was delicious, but I thought the chicken in the panini was a tad too herby. It over powered the garlic aioli. I like their grab and go salads. The Cobb with the blue cheese aioli dressing is my favorite and I usually don't care for blue cheese dressing. They offer daily specials. Their focus is fresh and healthy so you'll find dishes like vegetarian enchilada and Thai tofu curry. Nice, bright and clean cafe with flat screen TVs. Café Blue is very much as described. Prices are fine, but quanitity of food is a little small (agree with the comment about sandwiches being more like like big sliders), but it is a good quality and tastes great. Had the fish sandwich. It came with avocados and caramelized onions, also a small tossed salad. Overall tasty and reasonablevalue. To find the cafe, go into the main bank lobby, go halfway down the left the side to the elevator, and take it to the sixth floor. read more

Cafe Blue is a tucked away lunch hour gem. The food is very affordable, healthy, and the portions are generous. A quinoa salad for less than $5? Tuna, egg, or turkey sandwiches with salad for $3.95? And soup for $2.25 a cup? Very affordable. My colleague ordered a bacon mac and cheese sandwich-- and loved it. My other colleague ordered the special-- some kind of beef dish on cake noodles. I tasted the cake noodles and it was an ok dish-- not necessarily equivalent to a Chinese restaurant-- but ok. This is a great place for a fast and affordable lunch with co-workers. read more

I swear the last time I was here the burger had bacon. BUT. I guess I was either crazy or really craving bacon the last time I came here. I've had their burger twice now and each time, I've enjoyed it. The prices are decent and the wait time is non-existent. There's always plenty of seating and I love the friendly ambiance. The workers are super nice and it's always a good day when you see the President of BOH - Grant S sitting there. read more

After reading the glowing reviews for Cafe Blue, I was eager to try it and dragged some co-workers there with me. Overall, the quality of the food was not worth the more expensive prices ($7-8 per sandwich). I had the mahi sandwich and fries. The fish was cooked perfectly and tasted delicious, but I was disappointed by the tiny Love's bakery hamburger bun it came in. For the price, they could at least use a nice Kaiser roll or onion roll. The fries were nice and crispy. One co-worker had the chicken panini, which came on regular wheat sandwich bread and not any special panini-type bread. His comments were that it tasted like institutional food, with too much arugula. My other co-worker had the tomato bisque, which she said was way too tangy. For less cost and better quality (although not nearly as great service!), we'll stick to Bishop St. Cafe. Although the staff was very nice and friendly, we won't eat here again. read more

Cafe Blue is just okay. If you're working downtown or have another reason to be there then by all means, head upstairs and see if their daily specials tickle your fancy. Otherwise, it's definitely not worth a special trip just for lunch. The day that I went, the lunch special happened to be Thai green curry which was full of eggplant, bamboo shoots and chicken and was pretty decent. The rest of the standard menu was nothing interesting and beside the fact that the dining area is quiet and relaxing, the rest of the space seemed to exude more of a convenience store vibe since it was stocked with generic grab and go items rather than anything truly interesting. If B = Bank of Hawaii main branch, L = lunch, U = up the elevators, and E = excellent, then B+L+U+E = excellent lunch up the elevators (in the) Bank of Hawaii main branch! Even if you are not a math whiz, this is one worthwhile downtown Honolulu lunchtime equation that you'll be glad you memorized! A few coworkers (including Carly H.!) and I decided to grab lunch at Café Blue on a recent Friday. We met up in front of the main BOH building at King and Bishop and went straight on up! After entering the main branch, head to the elevators on the makai side of the building and go to the 6th floor. Turn left as you get off at the 6th floor and you'll be right at the Café Blue entrance! As you walk through, there are a lot of to-go options: sandwiches, salads, fruit cups, drinks, snacks, and even a F'real milkshake machine if you need lunch in a rush. Since we had time, we decided to check out their menu board instead of getting to-go stuff. There were a number of sandwiches and other snacks, as well as a Hawaiian plate special. It was tough deciding what to get because everything sounded good and was reasonably priced! Café Blue is cafeteria style, so pick up your to-go items (if any) before going to the register to pay. There was no line at the cashiers, and there were even two of them helping customers, so I didn't have a wait before ordering! They take card, which was really nice as well. After I ordered, I went to grab a table while everyone else placed their orders. There are indoor and outdoor seating options, and the indoor seats fill up pretty fast especially since its been so hot recently! I was able to grab a nice large table in the mauka corner of the seating area that was perfect for our group of 5. I had the prime rib sandwich (special of the day, $8.95) and opted for toss salad instead of potato wedges. I was very surprised with the sandwich! The bread was crunchy and toasted on the outside, but soft and warm on the inside. The prime rib was cooked excellently, not too red and not too tough! Usually, I'm not able to finish a sandwich in one sitting, but that was not the case here. Even though I had a full sandwich, I ate it all! The toss salad was nothing exciting, just romaine with a simple balsamic dressing, but it was refreshing and went well with the heavy sandwich. Café Blue is a great simple lunch spot downtown, and I hope to be back someday to try some of their regular menu offerings!
