We were really excited about this dining experience. As an experience for igloo dining, it was great but food and service disappointment. First it wasn't busy on Thursday night and it took forever for our waitress to attend to us. Food took forever to come and somehow mostly cold. My sons burger was cold and soggy on the bottom, my other sons kids mac and cheese was over cooked and had no taste. Cheese curds we're ok, and poutine sauce was confusing combo of curry ish ketchup. My mussels were ok and the only thing good was maybe my oldest son's tomato and basil sandwich. This place charged $150 reservation and $30 prefix drink at the time of reservation plus food for 6 was $120. I wish it was a better experience and overall very disappointed. read more

The wait time for a table and/or your food is very inconsistent--sometimes very long wait periods, sometimes very typical but despite that the food during brunch and dinner is solid. Good amount of selections without being overwhelming. The vegetarian options are really delicious too (tempah Reuben with vegan dressing is awesome). Have heard about this place since I moved to Madison. Finally, two years later, I was able to go with coworkers for their brunch. We started with a Bloody Mary and I really enjoyed the Milwaukeean, although I've heard good things about all of them. For food we started with cheese curds and the sweet potato appetizer, both were very good. The cheese curds were similar to the type you get at a fair - so good. We told the server that we were there for drinks and apps. This must be pretty normal at Cafe Hollander because they have a spot called the "Bier Garden", a causal little lounge area with TVs, for just this purpose! We were seated here right away. I think this is something unique to the MSN location as the Wauwatosa location does not have this area. The restaurant is HUGE and conveniently located in the new part of Hilldale mall. We were given full drink and food menus in this area and decided on the apple cider wings and cone of frites. The cone of frites comes with two dipping sauces of your choosing. Woo! All of the food menu options come with a recommended beer or cider pairing (cool!). The beer/cider menu is MASSIVE. There were probably close to ten gluten free beer/cider options. Our service was fine and quick, not overly friendly but this is a new place so I'm sure everyone is just learning! I love this place. And I'm obviously not the only one, as the thronging mass of humanity that descends upon it every weekend and warm, sunny weeknight should tell you. If you're looking for a fast meal, go somewhere else. If you're looking for a very good meal and looking forward to catching up with a friend, this is DEFINITELY the spot. Go here for brunch. Go here for lunch. Dinner too--it's all darn good. I've literally never had a losing meal, and I'm trying to try everything on the menu. For drinks, go with a bloody. They have STANDOUT bloodies. Appetizer? If you like veggies even a little bit, go with the brussels sprouts--trust me. Even people that don't like brussels sprouts will INHALE them like popcorn in a famine. The plate is large enough for 4 to graze on, too. If you're one of those weirdos who wants to die young and hates veggies, get the frites. I never go out of my way to eat fries - except here. If you have room for two appetizers, get both! Heart-healthy AND real crowd-pleasers! For parking, I stay sane by parking in the Target ramp and walking. People circle the immediate parking lot like sharks in a zombie death swim. It's unsafe and gratingly annoying. The bathrooms are clean and relatively dim. Fine by me, unless you need to touch up your eyeliner. If you sit in the front outside, bring your pup! They are super cool about well-behaved dogs hangin' out. If your dog's a spaz, spare us though, okay? If you hear haters hatin' on this place, they're just jelly. It's not the cheapest, but I think it's worth the money. Coming from an out-of-towner, I thought this place was great! Our service was very fast and friendly! I wish au could remember our servers name. It was something like Bryin I think. Anyway, he was so nice and helpful. We went for brunch. My stomach wasn't feeling so hot so I skipped the Bloody Mary and went with coffee. I enjoyed it. It was very bold. My husband didn't care for it though. We started with the beignets. I've never had one before, so I had nothing to compare it to. Wow!! They were delicious! They had a chocolate and a lemon icing to dip them in. So good! For my main meal I had cinnamon streusel French toast with a side of bacon. Amazing! Oh and it had an orange marmalade butter that was really good. And large portions too. I thought the prices were very reasonable. My husband had the porridge skillet. He said it was really good. I tasted it and it was like eating oatmeal and I'm not a fan of oatmeal! I really don't get why people gave this place such bad reviews. Cafe Hollander is a pretty standard place for food without much to write home about. I just wonder what the ingredients are, really, for the most simple things. I've been here quite a few times, and have watched the menu change accordingly. Every time here, I usually get some type or burger, fries, and cheese curds combination. The burger generally lacks flavor and I find the bun totally over powers the burger patty. Again due to the excessive bun, other ingredients like cheese and bacon also are easily lost. The fries? Pretty standard. The cheese curd breading recipe seems to have went through a couple of iterations. Seriously everytime I walk out of this place I feel nauseous from something I eat. Whats going on with this and how is a usual burger doing that? It makes me seriously question the quality of ingredients here. The service is usually fine. The drink menu is plentiful with several tap options. The atmosphere is fine as well. There is outdoor seating if the weather is right. Overall an okay place to hang out, but, I seriously have to think twice before agreeing to eat here. read more

We just went there for brunch the food was excellent. I had a Belgium waffle with a side of bacon with a decaf coffee. My wife had a spinach, bacon and feta omelette and she thought was very good. So overall the food was excellent. The decor was nice and the server was very attentive. Overall cleanliness was very good the only thing that we didn't like was it was a little noisy because of the high ceiling and openness of the middle of the restaurant. The service was very poor, I ordered a BLT&A, the bread was practically rock solid, burnt. I asked for a new one with fresh and non-solid bread, so they brought me out a new one, that was thrown together in two minutes. Pictures referenced below and still charged me for a crappy sandwich. My husband and myself visit our son often in Madison one of our favorite places to go is Cafe Hollander. Always, good food and good service. Today when I came with my son, unfortunately it was not that. We went for the first time to try their breakfast and we were seated literally in the farthest corner of the restaurant in what seemed to be a smaller private room. No problem there. Our waitress was pleasant but clearly new asked if we wanted fries on a menu item that wouldn't have choice and had to check another menu item. No problem clearly she was new. She came back and checked on us a few times. She was nice. She didn't refill my coffee but really not problem. They were obviously busy, she was new. We totally understood . However, when it was time to go we just couldn't get her attention and then she disappeared. No problem they're really busy we'll just head to the register. Not annoyed just ready to go and had we seen her on the way out we would have asked for our check. We get to the register. 4-5 staff all standing there. No one at the counter or waiting. We were told we needed to pay at the table. We explained that we tried but couldn't find our waitress and needed to go could we just pay there. They said well we are very busy. We said no problem we just want to pay here. They said we don't know where you were. I said farthest back corner of the entire place. They said oh she's new. I said again we understand that no problem can we just pay. They then told us that the best way for us to pay was to go back to our seats. I simply stated that I am not going back to my seat that was clear across the restaurant couldn't we just pay here. They said no we don't have the ability for you to pay here. I said, I don't understand can't we pay off the receipt like we always do. Then after a vert big sigh the one staff person who seemed in charge, told us fine to wait here, but we needed to move off to the side i guess to not be in the way of their entering customers (she didn't bother this). Once again, please note, there was no one in line and 3 to 4 other employees standing there at the large entrance counter just eye, rolling and listening and whispering. She then left for a long time while we stood there, and the other 3 to 4 employees stared at us, and then when she came back with the receipt, I asked her kindly, which is the best way to pay with my card or my phone she said pay with your phone, I did and then said thank you very much there you go and she said uh-huh and we left. I will note that so you understand this is not about the waitress who was new and made many mistakes, but pleasant I still left a 20% tip which my son thought was outrageous, and I was crazy to do. However, if I was tipping based on the hostessing at the front door and the very rude, and non-apologetic way I was treated the tip should have been zero so disappointed this restaurant is always our favorite place to come when we are in town. read more

My friends and I really like this place. The wait can be a bit long, but the food is very good and the staff are on top of it.

A lot of people love this spot, so I imagine my lukewarm opinion has more to do with me than with Cafe H. Their outdoor pods look amazing, and I give them credit for this investment in public safety. The service is good, but The Netherlands would not be my first choice for interesting cuisine. Without their Indonesian restaurants, The Netherlands are pretty much sliced meat and cheese plates, sandwiches, and fried gravy balls. And really great beer. So there is that. Otherwise, I find this venue mostly too noisy to have a conversation with more than one person. Wow, finally a great brunch spot in Madison! I have looking for an awesome brunch the past month that I have been here. FINALLY FOUND IT! Phenomenal Bloody Mary's, great Mimosas, and everything else you could imagine! Started off with a Berry blast mimosa and Beignets, pretty damn good. Next spicy badger Bloody (WOW), then the famous old fashioned and steak and mushroom hash. I usually don't post unless places are really good or really bad. I've been here a few times, it's one of my favorite restaurants in the area. The setting is pretty artsy and is a great place to grab some food or a drink. Their menu is on the unique side and I try to try something new every time. Their salmon scrambler and their zucchini noodles are both really good. If you're less adventurous, they also have classic hand held sandwiches, burgers, salads, and plates like chicken and waffles. I recently tried the Formosa salad and liked it a lot! We got to experience the outdoor dinning in a globe. We made reservations online (several weeks in advance due to Valentine's Day weekend). We arrived early to check in; Enjoyed a beverage and atmosphere while waiting for our time slot to begin. We did pre order our drinks and some food /appetizers They had everything we asked for prepped. Our waitress was great! The dome was quite and cozy. The heater worked very well. Also had the option of using the blue tooth speaker for music. The one thing that seemed miss leading was the limited menu online; they do have more food options there. My first visit to Cafe Hollander was a mixed bag. I popped in on a Monday night before seeing a show at Sundance. I was seated right away, and although there were plenty of diners all around the staff said it wasn't busy so they must be packed at other times. The menu looked great and there are a number of things I want to try. I settled on a burger and asked about the cook time, as it was going to be a tight fit to make it to the show on time. My waitress said 10-15 minutes, checked back in with me a couple of times to let me know where my order was in the queue, and my food arrived promptly 15 minutes later. Unfortunately the rare burger I ordered came out medium well - far overcooked for my preference. A manager stopped by about a minute after my food arrived to see how things were and was incredibly gracious when I told him it was overcooked. He offered to have it redone, and when I told him I didn't have enough time he asked if there was anything else I wanted. I declined that as well (timing) and he apologized, then explained the situation to my server and discounted my bill 50%. My server was also quite apologetic and I was quite impressed by the staff overall. While the food didn't quite hold up on this visit, I'll be giving them another try. read more

This year we had a perfect sun shiny weather day to enjoy the perfect temps of the globes (didn't even need the heat! And had a fan to keep things cool too). Our waitress was so sweet and funny. Hands down one of the best Sunday brunch places in Madison. I have been here for 2 months and was craving a good place, someone recommended Cafe Hollander. Wow, I'm glad I got this recommendation! The food, plenty of choices. First time I did the eggs Benedict, 2nd time steak and mushroom hash. This final was the shrimp and andouille grits, all were very good. The steak and mushroom hash was the best. They also have Beignets which are pretty damn good. The drinks, wow Bloody Mary's are phenomenal (I don't normally do bloodys). The have great craft beers, lots of house cocktails and much more. You will not be disappointed, but come early because this place is well known and there's a wait to get in. Came here for lunch with my wife. I have a soft spot for a good gastropub and this is definitely a good one. The beer list is great, lengthy yet we'll curated. I doubt we'll work our way through them all but the two we did try were unique and tasty. My wife was very impressed by her falafel and shrimp. I had the club sandwich and fries, both very good although I wish the portions were just a bit larger - but not quite enough to ding them a full star.
