    Veggie & cheese omelet.

Never had Latvian food before. Cafe Smilga is great. Very unassuming from outside. It's a grocery store and table service restaurant w/ indoor picnic tables. Super nice people, speaking Latvian to patrons. Food is great. Lots of meat (I'm a pescatarian) so I ordered a veggie & cheese omelet. Very good and came with a bread basket. Potatoes, sliced tomato, cucumber and pickles. Very fresh and very good. Il come back to try the fish dishes.

I visited this place in 2011 and was very happy as it was exactly my childhood food memory (my parents were Lithuanians who I lost a few years ago) This year I was coming back to Chicago and off course I went to the places with my childhood memories but this time there was a disappointment Chicago is the only one place where I can find cipilini and if the first time they were given with proper bacon sauce this time I do not know what it was but that was not traditional sauce. It was God knows what kind of bacon with strange sour flavor and was not able to eat... Big disappointment Hopefully next time I will be back it will be old fashioned!

Enormous breaded pork tenderloin with fries and beef stew with boiled potatoes + beet/cabbage/pickle garnish. Five stars!!!

Delicious, friendly cafe just 2 minutes off of I-55... totally worth it! The menu is mainly traditional Lithuanian fare, but don't be scared... there are basics for kids and picky eaters (the French fries were A+). Attached to the restaurant is a small, Lithuanian-inspired food and beverage market - grab a basket! Service was delightful!

I went in and got some Zeppelins, they were to die for! I am definitely a fan of all the potato dishes in the Lithuanian culture! Yum!!

    kharcho soup, beet salad

Food was amazing , service attentive and friendly. We shared kharcho soup, beet salad, potato pancakes w pork and homemade cookies. the Lithuanian black currant wine was a fun pairing with the peppery soup :)

Absolutely AMAZING authentic Lithuanian food. Holy cow - we are addicted. Huge portions very reasonably priced. We ordered a variety to try: the pan fried fish with veggies, stuffed cabbage, farmers sausage with stewed sauerkraut, and beet soup. What a hidden gem we will be back!!!

Unfortunately, there's probably a reason this isn't the most sought-out and reviewed place on Yelp. When I found out there was another Lithuanian restaurant in the area, I got excited. Real excited. Why? I dunno. I like the food at the other two. But my love of trying new places bit me in the ass this time. We came right when they opened, and the family that runs it seemed to be all gathered around one of the tables. We weren't even sure the restaurant was open, but after asking, we were told it was. So we sat down and ordered two cups of mushroom soup, a cepelinai plate and an order of kugelis. If you don't know what those things are, you probably aren't reading this review. And if you still don't know, feel free to google them. But basically, they're heavy, traditional Lithuanian dishes made from potato, grease, bacon and love. Unfortunately, aside from the soup, the food wasn't good. It tasted like it had been made about a week ago and was reheated in the microwave. In fact, I'm kind of thinking that's exactly what happened. It was steaming hot, but extremely gummy and just...bad. While the service was quick, and the server was friendly, the food was just lacking to the point that I had to leave half of mine uneaten. And if you know my love for Lithuanian food, that just isn't how I roll.

Maybe the bread wasn't fresh, the lunch meat tasted processed, or the quality just wasn't consistent. Tony & Tina's Deli is the first place that has truly become my go-to. I absolutely love their subs, especially the Brayden. I always order the large, and it's packed with so much fresh meat that I can give a generous portion of the turkey to my toddler as a snack and still have a full sandwich left for myself. That's saying something! Their potato salad is also outstanding. It tastes homemade, not like something scooped out of a mass-produced container. It's exactly the kind of potato salad you picture enjoying on a hot summer day. What really sets Tony & Tina's apart is the customer service. The owners genuinely care about their customers. I've only had one issue, and it wasn't even their fault. It was a delivery service problem. They personally responded and made sure everything was handled professionally and promptly. If you haven't been there yet, give them a try. Grab a sandwich, check out the desserts, and if you're feeling lucky, they even have gaming machines. If you're busy and work from home like I do, their app makes ordering incredibly easy. Tony & Tina's has earned a customer for life!

The beef was ordered cheesey, spicy, dry. I don't know if their giardinere was house made or not but it was decent. The beef itself was again, good (it's not Jays or Johnnies; I'll put it that way). It was nicely filled. They definitely don't use Turano rolls and I found the bread to be dense and not absorbant of the jus. The reason that I order it dry is because usually there's enough moisture in there to soak through the Turano roll without it being dipped but this was not so it was actually bone dry. Sure, I've lived here for 45 years so you can call me a purist but if I had known it would have been that dry I definitely would have had it dipped. I'll order from here again and it may help if I were there in person.

Definitely the kind of place that's easy to stop into when you're looking for something simple and unfussy. We ordered the Italian beef with hot giardiniera and a garden salad. The standout for me was actually the bread--it was fresh, soft, and really elevated the sandwich. The beef itself was decent, but it was drier than I expected and didn't have as much flavor as I was hoping for. Thankfully, the hot giardiniera added some much-needed moisture and spice, which helped bring the sandwich together. The garden salad was very basic--just lettuce, cucumbers, and tomatoes--but the Italian dressing was excellent and packed with flavor. Sometimes a great dressing is all a simple salad needs. Overall, I enjoyed the experience and would come back, but next time I'd probably skip the Italian beef and try one of their deli sandwiches instead. Based on what I've heard and seen, that seems to be where Berto's really shines.

Not only does this shop fully support the community -- even naming sandwiches after nearby schools, they also have a wide variety of delicious offerings. I haven't lived in IL for about 10 years and I decided to take a walk down memory lane and visit Berto's like I did regularly so many years ago. It hit theeee exact same. Family traditions so strong you can taste them in every bite and they've now carried that torch successfully for nearly three decades.
