Today's lunch break: Fontano's Subs......I've been meaning to try this place for years. So I doordashed them today..........I love a good sandwich and needless to say, I was extremely impressed. Delivery was quick. Turano bread, fresh ingredients, and a more than sufficent amount of meat. This turkey sub was a filling and tasty bite. I will definitely be patronizing more. read more

Alrighty then! The great Adam Witt (Chicago-based YouTuber; look him up!) highly recommended this place - and it was about time I made my way there regardless! So, on a cloudy Sunday afternoon, I headed over to Hinsdale to check this place out. Ambience- man, it looks old inside. But man, the service was FAST. I chose the Blockbuster on a 10" roll - this one was ham, genoa salami, capicola, provolone and swiss- with mayo (natch) and mild giardinera (! - probably spelled it wrong; it's a uniquely Chicago sorta thing). The guy prepped it fast and wrapped it up on white butcher paper (so ala 1950's!). I sat down (and here was the demerit- tables don't get wiped down often, hence the 1-point hit on the review) - man, this thing was BIG. and very, VERY SWISS-forward on the taste. It came with a dash of vinegar and oil - so I was told- but only noted the oil. Definitely needed to taste the vinegar as the sub was otherwise good- but not really super-standout-tasty. But the extra-charge choco-chip cookie was really great (ask how quickly I munched it down for proof!) - but I gotta say it was VERY filling. Definitely will bring hubby over so he can check it out; it's a little hole in the wall sorta place but was pretty busy- so you know a spot is good when it's like grand central station and you got people coming and going constantly, right? So- is it like - do I want to eat here LOTS? Well, no. But it was tasty enough to say "I've tried it and it was just fine!" - but it wasn't like knock-out crazy good. Quality ingredients, good portions of meat and decent price. I'm happy to heap love on Fontano's since it's a local establishment as far as both Hinsdale (SUPER- local!) and Chicago. I ordered a build your own with ham, provalone, lettuce, onion, and giardinara on Italian bread and it was fantastic. They put so much meat in the sandwich that the flavor dominates (I hate over-bready subs!). Just perfect Italian bread, not too tough, not too chewy. My husband got the Italian beef and a cannoli for dessert and couldn't have been happier. What's great is we ordered on Uber and it came out to a decent price which is really hard to come by these days. You don't need to go fancy to be satisfied, you just need it to be done right and these subs were just perfect! Lunch delivery=success! read more

I wanna state for the record this place deserves a 5 for service. Staff was friendly and efficient. Great neighborhood sandwhich joint. I really wanted to love this sandwhich after reading the hype. The meat, cheese, veggies, giardiniera were all top notch, but.....the bread killed it. I don't get why folks rave about the Turano rolls? Maybe because they've been around for a long time - not sure? Too bready and no flavor at all. I hate to compare, but Sarcones seeded rolls in Philly are the Gold standard and these Turano rolls aren't even in the same league. They tasted like a flat tasting french roll that I can get in a bag at a grocery store. Kind of bummed me out because I loved everything else about this joint and was really looking forwad to liking this sandwhich. Sorry man, the bread matters. I used to go the Fontana's by UIC. When it was UICC when you ordered in the back of the grocery store. So quite awhile ago. All I can say that this place did not disappoint and brought back my nostalgia!!! Had a turkey sandwich which was so tasty. read more

Ok, this is my second time here in 3 days. I first went to the original location in Chicago. This time I decided to go to the Hinsdale location, much closer to me. I ordered the same thing, turkey sandwich, but this time I got hot giardenarra instead of mild. Made the sandwich way better, however the bread wasn't as soft this time. I got a bag of mesquite bbq, and rosemary and olive oil. Made by a company called deep river snacks. ( yeah I know, never heard of them) The mesquite was run off the mill. The rosemary and olive was really good. Really good. They also offer small cups of potato salad, macaroni salad, and cole Slaw. I tried the potato salad and the cole Slaw, both were good. I have to see what's there best sandwich is might earn that 5 star. read more

This was quite possibly one of the greatest random places I've stumbled upon. From the moment we walked inside, I knew we had found a great place to have some lunch. The dining room was full of business people, police officers, construction workers, and other various people from around town. The smells when you walk in immediately tingle each and every sense and make your mouth water with anticipation. The staff is amazingly friendly and helpful as they quickly take your sandwich order, check you out, and hand you the food. The sandwiches are AMAZING! Quite frankly, I had high hopes when I came in but even that could not prepare me for each bite I took of that amazing sandwich! My only "mistake" was that I ordered the 10" and it was WAY too much food. So luckily I got to enjoy it twice in the same day! One of THE BEST sandwich shops I've ever visited. I have been going to Fontano's for years now, the past three consecutive times I did not get what I ordered. I go with the Blockbuster order hot peppers, oil and vinegar on it along with other toppings. I have not gotten oil vinegar nor peppers. Didn't find out til I got home. I feel quality control of a great sandwich shop has gone down or employees just do not pay attention to orders anymore either way will the owner please step up and make sure employees are making the high-quality sandwiches that Fontanos is known for. Also, on two occasions the bread was hard and tasted like it was yesterdays bread. read more

Best sub i have had in a long time, plenty of sides to choose, same as going the one in the city.

There are not many sub places that load the meat anymore but Fontano's does not disappoint! I'm a very plain sandwich person. So I just had American cheese, Turkey, oil/vinegar. The sandwich is served on French bread and is offered in multiple sizes. The 8 inch sub was too much for me so next time I'll get the 6 inch. I was happy with my sub, next time I'll get provolone cheese instead. It was very loud in the restaurant which caused them to add Mayo to my husbands sandwich when he said no Mayo. Prices are very reasonable, service was fast. read more

In a recent visit to Fontano's, the manager verified that the servers DO NOT receive the tips! He said that the kids receive a free sandwich, drink and chips every shift. I argued that he is providing these sandwiches at "cost" for just a couple dollars. I also argued the fact that not every employee wants a sandwich as a "tip" and many would prefer cash. After all, most sandwich shops will provide their employees a discount on lunch (e.g. Casey's in western springs). In essence, this amounts to false advertising since all customers assume that a tip jar goes to the employees, NOT THE OWNER! read more

This is just ok. I was really excited to order from here and was a little disappointed. I ordered the Wise Guy and it was decent. The bread was a little stale and I was just underwhelmed. But I do really like their provolone. It's sharp and flavorful. The potato salad wasn't very good and the chocolate chip cookie was raw cookie dough essentially. My husband got the Blockbuster and he said it was in his words "a sandwich." He liked the macaroni salad. I would maybe try it again. It was fine. read more
