I ordered the fried artichoke for a appetizer and a portobello mushroom burger with fries everything was delicious! I will definitely be back! I prefer the Cafe 69 for obvious reasons, but if I want a slightly-fancy Chicken Finger sub that is really actually damn good, and I'm in downtown, this is where I'll come, so to speak. What to get: Chicken Finger Sub What else: Jumanji actually isn't a movie I've seen Cafe 79 is nowhere near as good, and they play the Bee Gees all the time. Alex L has a lot of food recommendations and so do I. His are usually in and around downtown, mine are usually in far-flung suburbs or faraway cities. He likes a good portion of my recs and I like a good portion of his. We have similar tastes but also good tastes. Says the guy who thinks he has good food tastes. Two people are never going to agree on everything though, not by any means. This is one of the places we agree wholeheartedly on. He brought me here to have the "best Chicken Finger Sub of my life", and while it's not the singular best (maybe Mike's in Kenmore and others are slightly better, or at the very least as good), this is actually a five star sub sandwich, and I really appreciated it. It was very well done. Cafe 89 is pretty good, until the wall (the Berlin one) falls down mid-meal. It's a couple of dollars more expensive than most of these kinds of sandwiches around town, but it's on Allen Street so you sort of expect that. Wait time took a little while, but there's a lot of weird and interesting art on the wall to look at, and it's a nice place to sit around and chat, so you won't mind. You get a lot of chips with this expensive sub... they should offer you a bunch of other stuff with it for no upcharge (the chicken fingers are unhealthy enough as it is). They don't, at least not for free, but then welcome to Allentown. Nevertheless, excellent sandwich and 5 stars. Which is out of character for me to give to a slightly overpriced and pretty hipstery place, but you know... the sandwich is that good that it has to be a 5 from me. Will be back to try other items. Cafe 99 is great because everything's under a dollar. It's also known as Dollar General. And it looks like we've reached the turn of the Millennium so I'll end this review now. read more

This is my first 3 star review, and I feel like it's warranted. Here's the breakdown -Atmosphere- This was a very bistro-like place with indoor and outdoor seating. Although it felt kinda tight, you could still go as a group of 3-4 people. As you enter, you're greeted by the bar and in the back is the dine-in seating (although they do take out as well). The main reason why I've given 3 stars though, is because of the service. However, I'll get to that later. -Food- I ordered the falafel burger, and it was spot on! The falafel itself tasted fresh and flavorful, the fries were clearly made in house, and it was very filling! -Things to Consider- 1) My main problem was with the waitress who was serving the four of us. Everything was fine up until we were almost done eating. My one friend had to leave early, so she told the waitress that she was pressed for time and then asked for her check (aka we wanted the checks split). The waitress then proceeded to take 10 minutes to bring us a check for the entire table, not what we asked. When we asked for separate checks, she took it back (very irritated with us) and eventually came back to have each of us pay separately. She didn't have my friend pay first either, so she ended up waiting ~20 minutes total to get out of there and nearly missed her deadline. read more

I'm so happy I decided to go for a last minute lunch and chose this restaurant. They have a large menu with several healthy options. The waiter came over and asked if I would like a beverage or coffee. I asked if they carried iced coffee and he said he could do that for me, so accommodating! Unfortunately , they didn't have one of their dinner specials ready at that hour , so I ordered their risotto of the day (corn, banana peppers, Parmesan cheese) and also added a side of focaccia bread. My friend got her go to meal ... a bunless burger (with cheddar and jalapeño) and a side salad. Our food came out and it was definitely picture worthy. Even the side salad was nice looking. The risotto was cooked properly and full of flavor, I didn't even need salt and pepper on top. I really wish I took a picture of our table, we had a great view of Allen St. I would love to come back to see what else Cafe 59 has to offer! read more

Have always heard such great things about this place and finally checked it out yesterday. It's located on the popular Allen Street strip, with plenty of things to do within walking distance. There is a small patio on the side of the restaurant, but we sat at the bar which has huge windows to allow for plenty of natural light. The inside is fun with art and playful decor. The staff was friendly. And the food was AMAZING. I've been told they have the beat chicken finger sub in Buffalo, so naturally I had to try it. All I can say is I ate the whole thing and I NEVER eat a whole sub! I ordered it with medium and bbq with a side of their potato wedges. I went here twice in the past two weeks and both experiences were great. The first time I got the chicken salad and the food was quick, fresh, and very good. The second round I came for drinks and that was a delight. The wait staff came just the right amount to make sure we were cared for but not overly attentive where it was awkward. I got the Pinky Swear and the Cat's Pajamas. Both were very good, although you best like liquor because they don't cover the taste with too many add ins. Overall, it's a great spot, especially for the start of a bar crawl or a mildly casual date night. read more

Full liquor license, well thought out menu w/decent pricing and a nice laid back environment, Cafe 59 is a great place to get lunch in Allentown. They recently moved across the street and with the move came a new menu, a full liquor license and a significantly more organized space with better seating. I've come here in the morning to work with a cup of coffee and the staff was super accommodating and didn't give me any sour looks for staying there and using their wifi for so long. In fact, waiters and waitresses would come up and refill my coffee from time to time. This is now a more full-service type of place, than a traditional cafe of sorts and I recently came here for dinner. On Friday around 7pm, there were plenty of open tables. We sat down and were immediately given menus and toasted bread sticks with garlic infused oil. They were about 4 cloves of garlic in our oil and the whole bread + oil combo was delicious and probably the highlight of the meal. I ordered the broiled salmon which was served on a bed of rice and some steamed broccoli and asked for a side of cole slaw. The food itself was OK for dinner. The salmon was slightly overcooked. I prefer salmon more or less medium so it's more soft and melt-y and this was perhaps just a few minutes overdone. The portion was large (seemed like it over 8oz), so that was appreciated but it was lacking in spice and flavor. The rice was bland along with the broccoli and even though everything was super healthy, I would have enjoyed a bit more forethought into spicing and flavoring. Despite this, their salads and lunch options are still fantastic and I think this place just started doing dinner service like this, so I assume they are still working the kinks out and tweaking their dishes. If you're looking for a healthy meal, a nice laid back environment for a drink...or an awesome salad or sandwich, definitely check out Cafe 59. For dinner, it's a nice lower-cost ($10-15 per entree) casual option with many healthy, vegetarian and even gluten free choices. read more

New to WNY. People talked a lot about this thing called a "chicken finger sub." I thought why on earth are people losing their crap over chicken fingers inside bread? That's just lazy. And boring. And ugh why waste calories. THEN I HAD ONE AND TOOK EVERYTHING BACK. The chicken finger sub here is so so good, I actually talk myself out of getting it because if I keep getting it I probably won't be able to stop and I'll be struggling more to be not enormous than ever. It's on a good sesame seed roll, the blue cheese sauce is amazing, ugh...just eat it. Also ordered calamari to go on another occasion. So good. Red sauce is slightly sweet, so flavorful. The vibe in this restaurant is everything to me. But don't come here expecting an array of coffee drinks it isn't really that type of place (although there is a spiked coffee on the menu you can order). Nice sized bar wrapped around the front of the restaurant probably at least 15 seats. The bartenders are pretty friendly and are sure to greet you when you walk in. Plenty of colorful, rich and witty artwork hung behind the bar and a Nintendo in the corner (with two controllers) to keep you guys busy while you wait. It's pretty busy every time I come so I usually snag the seat by the window it might be a little chilly here and there but it's a nice spot to have conversation and kind of watch Allentown go by. We always find ourselves staying here way longer than we intended. (There are also a few outlets along the wall of the seating just in case you find yourself needing to charge your phone.) I have to admit it the first few times I came here I couldn't find anything on the menu I liked food-wise. Before you gasp, no one told me at the time about the magnificent chicken finger sub on the menu. But this place is so close, the people are awesome and I do love the drinks so I was determined to find my go-to order. Which is the chicken finger sub obviously, but to my surprise along the way I also discovered the Burgundy burger with red wine mayo; $10.95, & the meatball bomber; $12.95 and ye'old and faithful the chicken finger sub is a convenient $9.95. My food was horrible. I ordered a wrap which was called "wrap with roasted eggplant and artichoke" and it came cold, not just cold, but as if it was just taken from a freezer. The menu did not specify that. It was not tasty and hard to chew because inside the wrap there were huge chunks of canned artichokes and eggplants. The eggplant tasted like it was cooked long time ago and then frozen. The food here is very overpriced for this terrible quality. My lunch costed like it was a dinner in a fancy restaurant. They attend soup-fest so I already knew I love their soup. Finally got around to stopping in during lunch. Small but just right corner café. They do have a bar with a good selection of drafts and bottles. Bar seating. window seating, a couple high tops and lower tables. The food was PERFECT for lunch. I got a cup of tomato soup and a BLT for $9.95. Couldn't ask for a better meal. Definitely seems more catered toward a lunch atmosphere. They do have entrees, salad, and sandwich's. Used to love coming here because the food is so tasty. When we stopped in a few months ago for lunch, found a giant fly in the chips - totally understand, it happens, whatever. Just got some Pumpkin Ginger soup today which was very tasty, until near the bottom of my cup I found a broken rubber band. It wasn't a stem - it was a stretchy, boiled rubber band. I called to let them know, and had to laugh when they offered me "more soup" instead of a credit of some kind. I'm not a picky person and definitely would have rather eaten the fly. I really like this place! It is a bit small inside but they take reservations. Our waiter was very informative and truly took the time to answer any questions we had. With 7 people there were quite a few. The fried artichokes were a delicious appetizer (no picture because we ate them too fast) They give you a large amount too- big enough to share among 7! They weren't too fried either- lightly fried. I had the steak special that came with a Caesar salad that was very tasty. The steak was prepared just right. My husband and sister got the chicken finger sub which they said was amazing! It was made with chicken cutlets. The POTATO WEDGES were soooo good. Granted sitting next to the window was a little chilly but that's understandable(best to leave your jacket on in the winters) Food was excellent, very reasonably priced. Menu had just enough on it where it doesn't feel large or small and there's something for anyone. I usually love this place, but today I don't. I ordered the Chicken Finger sub which was over cooked and tasteless. The only taste was a greasy Poultry aftertaste which was awful. This was a pleasant surprise visit. It was through an office dinner call that we went here. I was intrigued by the Spices chickpeas and wanted to give it a try. Very casual setup with very low noise, for they have a full license liquor bar. The menu has a wide spread of food/cuisine choices to choose. It was for dinner and I decided to settle on the Moroccan Spiced Chickpeas. It was an excellent food. The chickpeas were rightly cooked, the greek yogurt was just a blend and the salad and vinaigrette it came with was excellent. The restaurant does start with their house bread which was different and the oil it came with was excellent. I will definitely go here again to try their other choice offerings. We did end the dinner that night with chocolate mousse dessert. They did not have a dessert menu per say but the mousse/ice cream did taste great. Cafe 59 has delicious food including a number of vegetarian dishes. This is a big deal for vegetarians in Buffalo who are sick of the typical pasta option. Cafe 59 also has an extensive drink menu including wine, cocktails, and specialty beers. Patio seating adds a nice touch. Love this place... stumbled across it while in town for a conference. We grabbed a table outside and while the bartender was doing double duty, he was attentive, helpful and I dare say charismatic. I ordered a falafel salad - it rocked. Added a little hummus for good measure... glad I did. Also had a cup of rich bean and bacon soup. It was both. Stopped in again for dinner and again just blown away by how good the food continues to be! This time I got a chicken and chorizo sausage jambalaya and it was out of this world! Really enjoyed this place. Came here for lunch and was super excited to see their lunch menu stays on until 5pm. They had plenty of great beers either in bottles or on draft ( I got to order one of my favorites Lagunitas Aunt Sally and also got on draft a sour by dogfish). I started out with a Caesar salad which was one of the best I've ever had. Not too much dressing and the croutons were made from rye bread. I was torn between the lunch tuna melt and the chicken finger sub but after staring at the mouthwatering picture of the sub on the wall I had to go for that. It was sooo yummy... sesame seed roll, bleu cheese dressing.... I highly recommend a stop here!! read more
