The food was absolute extraordinary. Great selection of beers. Love the sausage plate. The staff were incredibly kind and gave us some amazing recommendations for the dessert. Probably one of the best lunches I've had out in the last year.

We love the staff here, and the outdoor seating is lovely! Their lunch deals are great, definitely try the sauerkraut balls!!

A small group of us came for an early dinner after another event in DC. We got several apps, which were all great. I was pleasantly surprised to see flammkuchen on the menu. I hadn't had one since I was in France, so of course I had to get it. It small (it was an app so I should've seen that coming) but I'm happy I tried it. The cocktails were good. Wines by the glass were limited but it's a smaller restaurant so I can't be surprised. Our entrees we're all amazing. Truly. The trout was some of the best I've had and even better than we expected it to be. The apple strudels crust was a bit too crunchy/thick, so I wouldn't get that again. The bread pudding, on the other hand, was wonderful. It was a pricey meal in the end but definitely worth it for a special occasion.

It's a very nice and quiet, out of the way place. Plenty of indoor and outdoor seating, and outdoor seating is on a quiet residential style street. It is on the more expensive side, but if you know that going in, you'll see that it is very quality food that will leave you full and satisfied. The decor was cool too. Our only gripe was the $10 potato pancakes were small (and you only get 2 of them), but the rest of our lunch was very good and filling. Definitely check this place out!

First time trying German food and it was pretty good ! My palette prefers a a different flavour profile but I enjoyed the restaurant experience. Service was quick and polite and it's a cute cozy shop that has a homey feel. The pretzel appetizer was my favourite, very soft and fresh, and the sauces /butter they provide to complement it were fun to experience

Cute little cafe tucked away not far from the capitol. Authentic German schnitzel (expensive though).

Food is incredible, service is impecable, great atmosphere. Had the Wild Boar and Rabbit!

The hot salmon "salad" served without the salmon -- an actually very good choice for vegetarians, but pricey at $25.

Cafe Berlin is a good choice if you like quality meat served in big portions. Prices are high but you can easily share an entree between two (or more) people. Vegetarians won't find any obvious choices on the menu, but they'll prepare one of the hot "salad" dishes without the fish, and it's actually quite good.

Finally got to try Cafe Berlin after wanting to do so for a few years. My wife and I went for lunch for my birthday. We had the Kartoffel Pfannkuchen to start and then the Butternusskurbis Suppe and Wiener Schnitzel (with Spatzle and Germuse), and Schokoladekuchen Mit Venilla Eis to finish. Everything was very tasty. The standouts were the Kasespatzle and dessert. All of the food tasted very fresh. It was a great "stick to your ribs" sort of meal. The restaurant is a cozy throwback and was very busy for lunch. Astrea took care of us (and about a dozen other tables!) and really added to making it a quality experience.

Love this place. Got the meatloaf sandwich and it didn't disappoint. Such a good flavor and cooked perfectly. Loved the crunchiness of the bread. I got it with the gholaush soup and it also had great flavor and enjoyed it thoroughly. The carrots. Potatoes and meat were delicious and flavorful. The pretzel was also very good and the beer cheese spread it was served with was great. Loved the potato pancake as well perfectly crispy and probably one of the best potato pancakes Ive had in a long time. The side of sour cream and the applesauce was just like my grandma used to make!!! I could have had a whole bowl of it!!! I didn't try the fish sandwich but my boyfriend said it was very good and he enjoyed it. I didn't care for the potato salad. It was a little more sour than I'd like since it was cold but I love my German potato salad more sour when served warm or hot. I would totally eat here again. Service and ambience were great!!

I was expecting chill beer garden vibes, which has been the case at other similar spots I have been to. Sauf Haus was definitely not that, though part of it was definitely on us for not doing our research. Others have mentioned the two steep staircases. I happened to be in an unfortunate position where I have a knee injury and was in a brace, so that was challenging. Now, that isnt something my friend had remembered about Sauf Haus and I didnt think to look it up, so that is on me. I was able to make it up, but it was challenging. It seemed entirely inaccessible for those who have a disability (permanent or temporary) that renders them unable to go up stairs. When we got to the top, the first bartender we encountered seemed to be inconvenienced by us ordering. The bartenders we encountered in the outside area and later in the indoor portion were friendlier/more helpful, though. There was also a day party going on with a loud DJ, lots of dancing, and a mister/bubble machine, which is seemingly a weekly event. Again, I did not think to see if there was anything going on, and there is nothing wrong with that - it just was not what I expected in going here. What was more concerning was that, in the 2ish hours we were there, we saw at least 5 (likely more) people get kicked out. Manyyy people that i saw were struggling to stand and had the thousand yard stare in their eyes. Several people threw up. One guy straight up peed all over the floor of the men's room. Oh, and both bathrooms are left entirely open, and the men's urinals are directly inside the door. So that is all just...exposed, which I have never seen in a venue before (even at the diveiest of dives). It seemed like it was reasonable for security to kick out the people that they did, but it also seemed like bartenders were heavily overserving. And, again, this was all before 6:00 p.m., so I can only imagine it gets worse after that. They had a good beer selection and sell most beers in both .5 or 1 liter mugs. We got the 1lb soft pretzel, which came out hot and crispy. I loved that it had several different dipping sauces with it. It was tasty and reasonably priced. My friend and I were going to both get a beer flight (as advertised on the menu), but they only had one flight board available so I got a cocktail instead. They do charge a 20% "service charge" during certain hours on weekdays and all day on weekends, but they make sure to tell you that isnt a tip and that you should still tip extra. I got a couple cocktails, so my $14 drink turned into a $22 drink after tipping. The cocktails I had (Strawberry Smash and Feel the Passion) were really good. Overall, I am rating Sauf Haus a 3 because we were not their target demographic. Those in their target audience seemed to be having a great time, and I could see myself enjoying a spot like this when I was in college. But I do think there is an overserving problem and they could do better on some other customer service aspects, too, regardless.

They have slowly made changes over the years that make this an absolute must visit. What hasn't changed: the outdoor vibes and string lights are as pleasant as ever, and without the crushing crowds and lines that typified this location in their early years, it is a much nicer vibe most days. In my first review, I complained that the menu was very light on German beer options. They offer far more now, including a beer that I do not believe you can regularly find at any other bar in the city: the Weihenstephaner Korbinian, the world's finest doppelbock. It is one of the most delicious beers I have ever had, and they have it here on tap for a very reasonable price. Another positive change: they have a kitchen now with a full menu of food options. Their giant pretzel is a classic, of course. If you're a weekend happy hour chaser, they sell $5 High Noons all day Sunday. One final note: the location is absolutely perfect. Baan Mae has opened next door to the north (a 5/5 dining experience, amazing Thai food), Ugly Duckling is across the street to the south (a 5/5 happy hour and cocktail experience), and Ivy & Coney is right across the street to the east (a DC icon and 5/5 dive bar and football spot), so Dacha is essentially the centerpiece of the perfect night (or whole day) out.

I figured I could get past being cold if the food was at least good, but the pretzel was dry and hard. They didn't offer beer cheese which was a bummer, so I tried queso and buffalo chicken dips. The dips were yummy despite the lame pretzel. The cherry on top was that the service sucked. The guy working the rooftop bar seemed miserable, like he would've rather been anywhere else.
