I understand that it's COVID and they are really only getting any stars because they handled that well (good, spaced seating, masks required) but the food was not good. I ordered the brioche French toast and it was super thin and extremely eggy. All you could taste was egg and it was soggy and rubbery. We got the Forager "specialty" sandwich--the bread was cold, dry, and tasteless (almost like it had just been taken out of a freezer and quickly thawed), and the fixings were thin and completely unremarkable. We stopped in for lunch with our two young kids and we're very impressed! There was a long line which made us question whether we should even try to wait but it moved quickly. All of the staff was extremely friendly. We ordered two breakfast sandwiches with egg and cheese on croissants which were delicious and I got a half turkey sandwich and half a special salad that had strawberries, goat cheese and balsamic which was DELICIOUS and my husband also got a great sandwich. Love love love this Cape Cod spot! I'll start with my only criticism, then get right to the good stuff. I think they could come up with a better ordering line situation. Sometimes you can place your entire order in one line, other times you have to order fancy coffee drinks in one line and food in another. It's a *little* weird. All sandwiches come with Cape Cod potato chips, nice and crunchy. My favorite sandwich is the Cody Chew, served at breakfast. It's two fried eggs topped with melted Vermont cheddar and smoked bacon in a ciabatta roll. And I can't get enough of it. Sounds simple and straight forward, and it is, but it is soooo tasty. I love sitting outside, it's really a lovely little spot they have. There's a fountain, and birds chirping, and butterflies dancing around. I hate this place so much! Yes, the food is edible but I don't care. I've been forced to this pretentious, hipster haven three times now and if I am forced to go again I will chew my arm off and spend a much more relaxing morning in the ER. First, they don't have a wait staff. They have snooty kids who wouldn't know what a short-stack was if they got smacked in the face with one. Next, you have to jockey like cattle at their hap-hazard counter to order your food- "do I take my chances with the kid who can't get a coffee order right, or the matron/manager who probably hasn't cracked a smile or uttered a kind word since Nixon was in office?" Also, don't let any of your party stray and order from someone other than who you get "assigned" to or they go into melt-down mode, unable to connect two separate ticket orders. Then, good luck organizing your seating area for more than two people. The indoor seating area looks like someone threw a bunch of chairs and tables against the far wall and you are stuck rearranging your area (after you fight off the hordes of grandma and skinny jean tribes who dare to touch your chair or table) into some sort of ordered chaos. You also need to time your bathroom use like a parachute jump at night over enemy territory. You get ONE chance for every visit due to the fact that the ONE unisex bathroom is right in between the register where the cattle mill until allowed to speak, the pass where the..(ahem) staff bring food from the back, and the soda freezer and drink dispenser and garbage cans and the front door. I have never seen a worse layout/concept for a breakfast diner ever, aaarrgghh I hate this place so much! The corn muffins and pastrami sandwich are delicious. (Damnit.) read more

What makes Cafe Chew unique besides the handpainted tables, rustic floors and ceilings, and original artwork adorning the warm yellow walls are the owners Bob and Tobin. The two have been restaurateurs for some time now. They seem to have a natural ability to create cozy atmospheres while serving excellent food at an affordable price. Walking in the door you're instantly greeted by one of the two with a smile and a welcome. Ordering is done at the counter but there are tables at which your food will be delivered for you. You can't miss when it comes to the menu. Whether you order the brioche French toast with cinnamon butter, simple eggs and bacon or one of their artisan breakfast sandwiches you will be very satisfied and craving more. I ordered the Cafe Combo...half of a ham & gruyere sandwich and half of a spinach cranberry salad. And these halves are quite large! The salad was my favorite part. The dressing was tossed into the spinach, so it was evenly distributed. My sister got the hummus and tabouli salad plate. I tried the tabouli which was excellent, and she thoroughly enjoyed her meal. My dad got a turkey sandwich, and my mom got the turkey panini. I would recommend the panini over the sandwich, although the sandwich was still very good. Really creative and tasty sandwiches and salads to be had here. I had originally tried Cafe Chew last year during a midsummer rush, and had to wait forever for a table. The haphazard self-seating arrangement isn't optimal for the crowd they get... but the food was good and I made a note to return when things were calmer. My wife and I returned last weekend after a walk on the canal, and the self seating was the same. But a smaller crowd meant no wait, so maybe our last experience was a fluke. I had the Smokey Dutchman (turkey, smoked Gouda, tomato & lettuce on pretzel bread) and it was creative and exceptionally good. My wife had the Summer Salad (mixed greens, strawberries, cranberries, walnuts, goat cheese & balsamic), which was enormous and had a truly amazing sweet and tart flavor.
