Food came fast and hot. Overall, the service was good but food wasn't memorable. Relatively good prices and the eating area was clean and bright. Ok for now. Will go back but not yet. Stopped by Café on Rumba just to try something new in the neighborhood -- ended up loving it. The grilled steak was tender and juicy, with sautéed onions and lime on the side. Pork ribs were a bit dry but had a nicely balanced savory sauce, not the usual sweet BBQ. The seasoned rice reminded me of Hainanese chicken rice -- flavorful and fragrant, especially with the black beans and sweet plantains. Portion size is generous for the price. What a nice addition to the neighborhood! The interior of the restaurant was renovated to be cute and very comfortable to dine in, and the meal prices are so affordable. The workers, while some may not speak much English, are very kind and this is an excellent place to grab a quick lunch or dinner box for a cheap price at $11 or under. read more

Today we had lunch at Café Con Rumba in Jersey City, located on Newark Ave right across from the courthouse. From the moment we walked in, we were greeted with warm smiles and seated promptly. Our hostess quickly took our drink orders, and our server arrived shortly after to take our appetizer selection. We started with the beef empanada and the spinach and cheese empanada--both were very tasty! For my main dish, I had the fried chicken chunks with a house salad. A-maz-ing! So delicious. My husband ordered the BBQ ribs, and I had to try a bite--chef's kiss! Our friend had the shredded beef, which was packed with flavor. I also had a lemonade, which was refreshing and just right. I wish I had room for dessert, but there's always next time. I'm already looking forward to coming back to try the Cuban sandwich, breakfast options, and some of their shakes. Food is very basic no flavor, my coffee was so hot after 10 mins I waited Tod Ron it it burned my tongue. I tried this place before and I was hoping for improvements since it's new and it seems like it ownership it's fine with mediocrity. Rumba Cubana Guttenberg is one of my all-time favorite go-to restaurants. I always found the prices at any Rumba to be fair, and the food to be excellent. Cafe con Rumba aims to capture that vitality that so many NJ locals have come to love in their restaurants - and while I think it's not perfect, it's definitely on its way. We were a rather large party that stopped here for lunch. Although there is a hostess stand here (from what I recall, it's cutely shaped as a front of a car), there is actually no hostess on duty; rather, you sit down at a table and a server comes and takes your order / gives you menus. Now, this is the most confusing part of Cafe con Rumba - when you walk it, there is clearly a cafeteria-style food counter with dividers that indicate where you should order, and yet you're supposed to just know to sit down and wait if you want to be served. I don't think there was a sign or anything; my brother (who works at the courthouse) just happened to know the deal here, hence we were able to follow correct protocol. However, I can see why new patrons would be confused!!! Anyway...the most important thing about Cafe con Rumba is the question of the food. I can say that most things were as good as the restaurant in Guttenberg, and I noticed they have a few 'cafe only' things such as breakfasts and tacos (which are not typically on the restaurant menu). I opted for the ropa vieja which came in a huge portion (way more than the Guttenberg location, actually, which basically gives you a teacup full of braised beef), and my brother got the lechon which is a staple. My mother got the pollo a la plancha - it's served the same way as in the restaurant, with grilled onions. It was excellent. The most lackluster dish was the Cuban sandwich (my dad's choice) which was alright - a little disappointing, but better luck next time. (The fries on the side were great, though.) And every dish came with some maduros and rice and beans - a pleasant surprise. Not to mention, the prices were a bit cheaper than the restaurant - but it is an 'express' version of Rumba, and they do offer less which is to be expected. Sidenote - I think it's hilarious that most of the menu is in English (aka, shredded beef instead of ropa vieja, grilled chicken instead of pollo a la plancha), but I obviously think they are trying to please the masses here. Also, the restaurant looks beautiful. It's bright, it's clean, it's nicely decorated, and the bathroom was clearly maintained. Our waitress was fine - she did her job, no complaints there. This is a great addition to the area, and fabulous departure from the old McDonalds that used to be here (IYKYK). I have jury duty here in a few weeks and plan on coming here to eat lunch! read more

1 star is generous. Came in with my family (4 of us total) and we sat there for 20 minutes without being greeted. No water, no hello, no "I'll be right with you" NOTHING !!! We were genuinely excited to try this new location because we've always loved the vibe and food at the North St/Central Ave spot. Unfortunately, our visit left us really disappointed. Our server, Lisayne, gave us noticeable attitude from the moment we sat down. When I tried to add something to my order, she snapped back with "what is it?"--it felt incredibly dismissive, as if I was bothering her. I clearly said I wanted my order for here, and she acknowledged it, but then still packed everything to go. I get that this is a new opening and there might be some kinks to work out, but the attitude we received wasn't just about being new--it felt personal.
