I'm really surprised that this restaurant hasn't gotten higher reviews, considering the restaurant is really one of a kind. It's modern mexican fare in your typical hole-in-the-wall kind of place. I've personally never had a problem with service, the people have always been extremely courteous to me. Beyond the fact the food is good, the food is always a work of art when it comes out - every dish is loaded with color and flavor. I love the fact that there's almost never a wait when i get there. Which is probably because no one knows about this hidden gem, yet. Two dishes I recommend? The stuffed poblano pepper and the seafood enchiladas. Ambiance isn't great. The service took a while to take our order, but once they did, the food came out really fast. That was good! I got the vegetarian fajitas. I loved the pico and sides, and love that they have a veggie option, but the veggies were kind of strange for fajitas. Baby carrots, snap peas, broccoli and cauliflower. Although my first experience here had put me off quite a bit because of the tough and rubber-like chicken dish, I recently visited for a birthday dinner. I didn't order the chicken but the seafood and shrimp and the food was so delicious, best Mexican food I have EVER tasted. So fresh and so well-balanced nutritionally. If you want to eat out and still eat healthy you can go here...just don't binge on the tortilla chips and order a seafood dish...Can't wait to go there again. Fantastic food! Their vegetarian burrito is chock full of spinach, and other veggie goodies of better quality than I find in veggie burritos from other places that use lettuce as filler. You can customize your beans too. Though very friendly, I hear their service tends to be slow. I haven't really experienced it, as I usually call in my order for pick-up. They always include chips and salsa in their take-out order too, love that! I work a few blocks away and we're quickly becoming regulars here. I'll be honest: I don't like mexican food. Burritos scare me. Quesadias are my safety food at an unknown mexican place. But Cafe Del Sol... It's the one mexican restaurant that I look forward to. The food is excellent, and the staff is very friendly. Something to keep in mind: Plan to take your time when you're here. Excellent dinner for two: ceviche appetizer was delicious, a little spicier than we are used to, making it quite interesting; a tequila marinated shrimp appetizer had sweetness from mangoes and was wonderful; we shared a fish taco special plate that was huge: initially we thought, all right we will be taking some leftovers home, but the plate was clean by the end of the meal. After trying unsuccessfully several times to speak to the owner/manager (The staff doesn't ever know when he'll be in and he hasn't return my calls.) I am resorting to a ONE star review. This used to be one of my favorite restaurants. I will NEVER go again. Last month I brought a friend who had never been telling her they had THE best tostada salads. It is the only thing I ever order so I know exactly what's in it. So many things went wrong: 1. Service was HORRIBLE. We waited a long time for our order to be taken. We had to ask for water twice and had to ask for the chips. We were told they were "short staffed" (Btw- the restaurant was practically empty although it was around noon.) 2. Part of the way through our tostada salads I realize TWO key ingredients were NOT in them: mango and guac. When I told the waitress she said "the truck didn't deliver them." She said it like she knew they were missing - never offering to fix or exchange the salads. When we asked her to adjust the bill to reflect the missing ingredients she said, "I will comp you the next time you come in- I recognize both of you." (My friend had never been here.) So we asked to speak to the manager. We were told he wasn't in and she didn't know when he'd be in. I called that evening (never heard back) and called two weeks later- never heard back. I was disgusted after telling my friend what a great restaurant it WAS. read more

Came here again on Wednesday and wow what a difference from Monday. We loved this restaurant on Monday but after today we will definitely not be coming back. We arrived and were promptly seated but did not get any water or chips only after asking multiple times. Our plates then kept coming at different times. Not all at once. My Chile verde plate was totally different than when I ordered it on Monday as well as COLD! After all that horrible service we asked to use the yelp coupon for 25 percent off as we dined between 8-10pm but the owner made up some lame excuse on the spot as to why we couldn't use it. Our party of five went for dinner last night upon recommendation of someone in our party who really likes this restaurant. Unfortunately it fell short for the rest of us in so many ways. The highlight to our meal was the tasty potato taquitos that were presented to us as a free appetizer. The five of us were cramped at a table. So much so that one of our guests kept accidentally leaning back on a girl's ponytail that was at the next table twice. Granted it was a busy Saturday night, but service was no where near sufficient. Sent back two Cokes as they were flat, a customized order of melted cheese and sour cream on the Chile Colorado was ignored, two of us were grazed by the water picture when he was refilling our glasses and although our freebie taquitos and appetizer arrived quickly, there was a 20 minute wait for our main course. We were disappointed in our dishes. The sauteed shrimp had an unappetizing amount of oil in the skillet, the fish tacos were tasty but the fillet was so large that they had to be eaten with a fork (kinda defies the definition of a taco), the chili colorado was luke warm and spicier than I've had in other restaurants and the adobo marinated roasted pork chops were spicy. We questioned the waitress about this and she said that they were not spicy at all. We finished our meal with full stomachs but talking about our unsatisfying dining experience. Well, I didn't enjoy my meal at Cafe Del Sol. The complimentary appetizer of potato taquitos, chips and a bit of guac was very good. I ordered tamales. The menu description said shredded chicken with some delish sounding sauce. However, the tamales had raisins in them, and the filling was sweet tasting chicken. I am not a fan of sweet entrees and I have never had raisins in a tamale before. No thanks. read more

I go to this place with my co workers all the time. The prices are really reasonable for the amount of food given on the lunch menu! I always get the vegetarian burrito although there are many other things I can get . The chips and dip were served right away and they are so good! Cozy decorations that make it cool to hang out with friends or an intimate lunch for two. If you are going for lunch, I recommend going early because the parking in that area really sucks and also the restaurant fills up very fast. read more

Anyone can make great food. If you open up a restaurant, you should be required to make good food. I think too many of us are accustomed to the mediocre taste of convenient food, which is easily associated with burritos, hamburgers, and simple italian...My belief, if you can't top Marie Callendars, don't open your doors. I mean, anyone is (should be) able to make delicious food. And to provide excellent service on top of it is what keeps people coming back. And raving! I recently ordered catering for about 50 people (but each person insisted on individual plates instead of catered buffet style...good grief!) Unfortuately, one order was left off. They were more than happy to replace it ASAP, but by the time we figured out what was missing, we had all shared and fed every mouth in the office. The person I ordered with insisted on accomodating us and said we would have a free burrito next time we ordered. Well, a month passed and I completely forgot. We went to place the order, and nothing was mentioned. Then he showed up at our office ahead of schedule with an extra burrito in hand as promised a month ago! Amazing. We really really love the following: New Caesar Salad Bean Dip (OMG Good) burritoes (yummy starchy tortillas are so satisfying..who cares how bad they are for you) salsa, to die for chips..yay! simple pleasures? man this place is seroiusly jumpin. from the outside u seriously cant tell its a really quaint, nice joint that gets a ton of business. especially during lunch hours. well my friend and i both ordered the combo set, which ran us about 10 bucks each. i got two enchiladas, he got a taco and enchilada. the enchiladas are really good man. theres a homemade taste about them that u wont get at a regular taqueria. maybe its the cheese, i dunno, but it was good. there was a lot of food and it looked really nice too. the guacamole on the side was also quite nice. the only complaint i have is that the enchilada was a bit too warm. it shoulda been hotter. but i ordered beef and chicken.. the beef wasn't shredded like other places, it was actualy little nice cubes of beef and was very tender and juicy. good stuff. the chicken, although i sually dont like chicken in my enchilada cuz its dry, wasn't dry at all, and was tender even for breast meat. and the salsa. wow the salsa is really good. i dont know what they put in that stuff but its one of the best salsas ive ever had. well one bad thing was basically there was only one waitress so it took quite awhile for us to get our food. and they didn't bring out one of the things we ordered. but they did give us some ice teas as an apology. now i dont wanna complain bout free stuff but the ice tea was too sweet, but hey its free. so whats holdin it back from 5 stars? well its a little expensive. expect to go around 10, 11 bucks a person. and the service is slow too. but the food is really good. even if all the people eatin there are white people... its one of the better mexican places ive had. read more
