I love their food and smoothies and crave their special sauce. However, I have decided to stop going there because I do not believe that their food is worth the price. Fresh and bursting with flavor! This place is a little gem in Menlo Park, it's reasonably priced for the peninsula but a little more than your typical mexican place will normally cost you BUT it's worth it for the quality and freshness of the ingredients. My husband and I always start with the shrimp quesadilla. Normally I don't like seafood and cheese together nor do I ever go anywhere else and order a quesadilla... I can make that at home. So this ironically is what keeps me coming back to cafe del sol, it's just that good! I also highly recommend their snapper with ajo! Worst service ever! We arrived with two other tables filled in our room and both had finished eating. We ordered and then two other parties arrived 10 minutes later. They then ordered and both got their food before us. 15 minutes later we finally got our food (after waiting 40 minutes total). The other tables who came 15 minutes after us were almost finished by the time our food came. I ordered my shrimp mild and it was so spicy that I had to switch with my husband who likes spicy food but was sweating as the shrimp from the heat. I asked our waiter if she forgot to put our order in and she just said defensively that the tickets got messed up. They never said sorry or offered to even bring us chips or anything while we waited 40 minutes for our food. They never said sorry and didn't refill our water even though our cups were empty as they refilled the table next to ours. Food was average. One of our dishes was cold. I liked this restaurant when I went about 6 years ago but will never go again. And the restaurant was never full which makes sense to me now. read more

The food at Cafe Del Sol is a hit and miss. Either it's very good, or not what you were hoping for/or expecting. The chicken with rice soup was tasty but the portion was tiny. The guacamole and nachos were a favorite in the table. The complementary chips and salsa were better than I've found in other places. The atmosphere is lovely and quiet. There were only a few other people there despite the fact that we were there for dinner and it's located in downtown. I'm giving them one star because the service was terrible. First of all, the food took over 40 minutes to arrive and it was sizzling hot. Second, the waitress did not fill our cups with water when they were low and we had to ask her for the chips and salsa. We asked her for an extra set of limes (2X) and she finally remembered when we were almost done. She did not really check up on us, and when we asked why the food was taking so long she pretty chuckled it up and said it was "almost ready". Despite us asking and her saying it was almost ready it took another 30 minutes for the food to arrive. The frustrating part was that there weren't many people there. My family understands slow service when there is one waitress on staff (or a few) or the place is busy. However, the place was not busy and even if it was they be prepared to keep up with a busy crowd. Overall, the service was what made the experience a negative one, not the food. If they were to fix the problem with their service, I would be more than happy to return. read more

A small little restaurant off the beaten path, but worth the visit staff is friendly, food is delicious. I had the prawn frajitas. Dinner is served with a fancy little complimentary appeitzer. We went too close to closing on a Saturday night, but we were seated and there was zero pressure to get us out of the restaurant (though we didn't linger around after eating...) and they even asked us if we wanted desert even though they had been closed for at least 15 minutes. I've gone here quite a few times since is close to work, so guess I like it somewhat you could say. It is a step above Mexican food, and the service is good. I've had several of the dishes and has never failed yet. It is not cheap simple Mexican food, but the prices are still not too bad I think, especially for lunch. I finally had their Sangria last time, and it was pretty good, but very weak. Would say it's more fruit juice than wine it seemed, but was still something I enjoyed. My fiancee and I go here on a regular basis and consistently love it. Everything about this restaurant is different and unique from your average Mexican restaurant, from the white table cloths to the tasty free taquitos, fresh chips drizzled with sour cream, pico di gallo adn guacamole. My fiancee LOVES the Seafood Enchilidas and has difficulty ordering anything else but that everytime we go. Not only is the presentation colorful and delicious looking, but the combination of fresh succulent seafood along with sauce is a mouth watering delight. I've had the Steak Tacos, the Fajitas and the Chile Colorado are all fresh and delecious. The service is always friendly and fast. I highly recommend it. read more

The red sauce was sweet and very tasty, the guacamole was also good with an extra touch of lime, and the rice and beans were more than just an afterthought. We came across Cafe Del Sol in our travels one day and decided to stop in. It's a nice place with attentive and nice servers. I chose the Arrachera which was grilled hanger steak with a skewer of grilled tomatoes, jalapeños, and onions. It was served with cilantro rice and refried beans. I thought the steak was tough and practically switched plates with my partner who got the fish tacos. She got one ahi tuna and one red snapper. They were great and served with the same accompaniments but with the addition of pineapple salsa. It was a good meal. The waitress and manager refused to accept my valid restaurant.com certificate (which brought me into the restaurant). They even went so far as to insist that I call the phone number on the certificate that clearly says, "DO NOT CALL unless you are a restaurant owner or employee. Calling the above number will invalidate your certificate." I did this in front of them. The certificate was valid. They still refused to accept it. I had the mole poblano (thin and watery). My daughters had a quesadilla and a burrito. I grew up in Fresno. I've had a lot of Mexican food in my almost 55 years (in multiple states). The food at Cafe Del Sol is mediocre, at best. Paid the check in full. Will not return to Cafe Del Sol. Stick to Palo Alto Sol for authentic Mexican food. Their mole poblano is unmatched (also served with tortillas, unlike Cafe Del Sol). I've never had anything but superb food at Palo Alto Sol--- every dish is a wonderful experience. read more

Service continues to be a huge problem. Mainly, the waiters suck, but the bus boys are very efficient. You won't go thirsty, but it may take you about 30 minutes just to get your bill. Food, though, is excellent. I would say food gets a 5-star review, and service gets a 1-star. Three seems like a reasonable average. I love this place for the food and the beauty in the way they plate it. I agree 100% with the other reviews about the service. You cant get any. Its really frustrating. Ive even seen them sweeping up one time when we must have been at the last service. Very rude. I LOVE the diabla shrimp though, so i kept coming back... One day they mustve gotten a new cook- i literally didnt recognize the plate. Its all about consistency so regulars are drawn back for their favorites, right? I was so bummed I didnt eat it. The food was superb. We went on the 4-star recommendation from Yelp and it was worth every star. As others have mentioned, they do seem to be short on staff, and it took awhile to get the receptionist's attention, but once we were seated, everything went smoothly. I had the seafood enchiladas and my wife had the pork chops. Everything was very flavorful. Spicy, but not hot. We also ordered some of the green chili sauce on the side, since so many reviewers had commented on it, and that was great, too. So delicious. Not your typical Mexican food. It has all the spices that would be expected of any Mexican dish but is very fresh and healthy (and mainly seafood based). During lunch, customers receive chips and salsa (the green one is so good!) while at dinner you receive complimentary taquitos. I usually order the Enchiladas de Mariscos, nachos, or quesadilla. The nachos are magnificently presented and large. I would however be wary about going if you are on a time constraint. I like that this restaurant has a nice and light feel. Although the dining room is small, there's plenty of natural light. I've only been here for lunch, but have been here numerous times as it is a favorite of workmates. For me, I think the food is good not great. The salsa that comes with the chips is very tasty. I like that the tostada salad has mango salsa. Overall though, the food is a bit bland without putting some salsa on it. The portions are reasonable but probably not large enough for a big-guy appetite. Expect Menlo Park pricing. The food typically shows up warm enough but not hot. read more
