This used to be our favorite spot for special office lunch's. I just spent $52 on 3 meals. One sandwich was completely wrong, the salmon sandwiches was so overcooked we thought it chicken, and my chicken salad has no dressing and half the plain chicken was in the middle of the container. Alright, so I find the establishment to be just ok. Most of the food was good, but not perfect, and the real issue is the setup. So I had the Southwest Omelette with bacon, hash browns, and toast. The omelette and bacon were great, the hash browns were good, but just frozen hash browns, and the toast I didn't eat because it wasn't buttered and there was literally no butter in sight. Asking would have required a 10 minute wait in line, so I decided to forfeit that battle. My son had chocolate chip pancakes and they may have been the heaviest pancakes I'd ever encountered...he ate one bite unfortunately and threw in the towel. My wife had the French toast melt and said it was decent but a little dry. She added a little syrup and ate it with a fork and that improved it, so a thought to consider for those interested. All in all, the food is good and I'd recommend as I'm thinking the pancakes were just one mis-measured batch of batter. Now, as mentioned initially, the real issue is the way they're setup. Waiting in line to order is fine, but the problem is waiting in line every single time you need something, which we had to do a number of times for just little things that should have been readily available for self serving, or served with the food itself. I ordered a cup of fruit after we ate for my son after he hadn't liked the heavy pancakes, and it took 10 minutes because they clearly didn't have it staged. I really expected the cashier to just grab a cup from the fridge and hand it to me, but we had to wait. Their coffee setup is stupid--two pump thermos' that ran out twice while we were there, causing multiple groups of people to continuously wait for more, and not a lot of focus on keeping it brewed. I think they need to rethink this, maybe have someone walking around refilling on weekends simply because EVERYONE drinks coffee with breakfast at a cafe! Lastly, I left smelling like everything that hit that grill, from a smoky perspective, because ventilation is not good. Might need to look into something a little more effective. All in all, I'd probably go again for the food, but they need to work on their execution of the good food. read more

Delicious! I was grabbing coffee nearby and asked a local a good place for lunch. He recommended this adorable little French cafe. Their menu has a great list of sandwiches and salads. They also have a ton of sides such as roasted red potatoes , macaroni & cheese, sauteed apples ect. I decided on the BLTTA-- bacon lettuce tomato turkey avocado. It was served on a buttery croissant and i got to choose one side. I went with a side salad. I decided to eat in. My sandwich was fabulous and the salad was hearty. I got to try this place a few months back as I happened to be in the area. It's not in my neck of the woods at all. And that's truly a travesty. This is a cafe where u order at the counter grab a seat, chill, and thoroughly enjoy your food when they bring it to you. I had Croque Mdame today, my kiddo had the caprese sandwich and both were divine. Last time I was here I was full from my breakfast sandwich and had no plans to order a crepe. But after watching the young lady make them for about an hour I couldn't resist. And boy am I glad I did! It was perfection.!! Stopped in here for lunch. It is a little diner type place with French-ish decor. Large menu and tons of options. It was clean, and you have an open sight line to the kitchen. I ordered the Caprese breakfast sandwich with a side of the minestrone soup. My food arrived quickly and was brought to me. Be sure to grab your own napkins and silverware though. The sandwich had little flavor and was absolutely dripping in oil. The amount of oil saturated the bread and left a large puddle on the plate. A little disappointing because the sandwich looked so good. I got a side of the minestrone soup which had good flavor and was lukewarm. The coffee was decent, but wasn't much better than gas station coffee. The staff was friendly. Overall not entirely impressed and was hoping for more due to the prices and reviews. read more

I've had desert crepes and pancakes here. Crepes were good - it's hard to balance acidity on a lemon crepe but they pulled it off! The pancakes were the worst I've ever had, uncooked inside and yet dry and inedible. I ate maybe four bites and set it on the counter and walked out. It tasted like biswuick mix, I don't know what took so long. Also $10.50 for pancakes is. A lot. The pancakes were "filled" which means they throw a topping on it. Not stacked in between the pancakes, not enough for the (massive) platter. I would rather have smaller pancakes, moist and cooked thoroughly, with enough topping for every bite. This is a hidden gem of Sewickley. It is very casual, and also has some outdoor seating. The food is simple but excellent. I enjoyed a wonderful omelet, and all ingredients were quality. There is a sign on from Broad st to show you where the cafe is but the alley is very small so i suggest you to park on the big street and walk to this place. Staff is very nice and friendly. Food is delicious and big-enough portion for breakfast and brunch. The cheese in their food taste authentic, unlike plastic cheese flavor from other breakfast restaurants. New to the neighborhood and a few friends of mine recommended this place. It's located on a side street just a block from Beaver and can be easily overlooked. I ordered my food online and was greeted by a grumpy cashier who looked like she was about to jump from behind the counter to straggle me. I got a Reuben sandwich and it had 3 slices of corned beef that were sliced about 1/4" thick each. It was a very tough sandwich to eat. My wife and I had the French toast with bananas and caramel to go this morning. My goodness... the whipped cream on the side was far from what you'd get out of a can. I'm from the area and had never been... and now I realized I was missing out. Of course you can't have dessert for breakfast every day, but this will make you want to! Also, contrary to the pictures they do have dessert crepes and more on their menu in general than they show. The setup of the store is neat too. A lovely little gem tucked away off of the main drag in Sewickley Village, Cafe des Amis does well in offering up some classic French cafe staples, along with food that I would definitely identify as more American picnic fare (pasta salad, anyone?) They aren't a full on patisserie-boulangerie, so don't expect to find an extensive offering of pastry, croissants, and breads. Instead, go for what they are really good at: crepes. They offer both savory and sweet, and the portions are generous enough that you can even split it with another person and still be quite satisfied. I am a huge fan of another certain cafe nearby, but it has far less seating and gets crowded very quickly, thus also making one feel a little guilty for lingering at a table on a busy day. At Cafe des Amis, you can afford to slow down a little because it's larger. They've expanded to claim a space across from the main counter area, so if you'd like a slightly more quiet atmosphere, place your order at the counter, grab a number, and head across the hall to that area. All in all, a lovely option for brunch and lunch in the Village. read more

I came here for breakfast with my dad during a college visit trip for Duquesne. Normally, I find most breakfast sandwiches to be absolutely detestable, but the Croque Madam that I ordered was a major exception to that rule. It was hands down one of the best sandwiches I've ever had and the best breakfast one for sure. I also had a bite of my dad's omelet that he ordered, which was very delicious as well. While the food I had was tasty I don't really think it is true french cuisine. You order at the counter and food is brought to your table. For breakfast, the Garden omelet was loaded with veggies and goat cheese, both of which I love. I chose a side of fruit which was sad and pathetic. It had clearly sat on the fridge after being prepared the night before. For lunch I had the Chicken Apple Walnut Salad which is usually served with her house dijon dressing. Since I'm not a fan of dijon dressing, I opted for balsamic dressing. The salad was served with a small cup of balsamic vinegar which was disappointing. The salad itself was huge and loaded with shredded chicken, dried cranberries and chopped apple. Overall, the food here was good but again, not the french cuisine I was hoping for based on the name. While they do have french type paintings hanging, I am not sure this is enough to call this place a French Bistro. This is the basis for my 3 star rating. I would return here if in the area and looking for a healthy and quick meal, but this isn't one of those must try places. read more

I had very high hopes for Cafe des Amis. Mostly because it's 5 minutes away from my house and the menu looked so appealing. When you get there, it's a totally different story. Let's start with the surly staff. We needed a table cleaned off and had asked for some help with that. Quite a bit of huffing and puffing about it and a fair amount of eye rolling. Sorry, we just wanted to have lunch here and pay you for it... We ordered at the counter - 3 entrees in all to feed our family of 4. We ordered the mac and cheese (bubbling hot and delicious looking but very bland), escargots (also bland) and a breakfast entree (I don't recall what it was exactly). The food hit the spot (our family was really quite famished) but were not wowed by what we ordered and certainly not bowled over by the service. We did end up ordering a Nutella and banana crepe after someone else next to us ordered a sweet crepe. This was by far the best tasting item we ordered and the best value, too. I am a HUGE believer in customer service. I came in on a Saturday with my family and this was our first time. Believe me, we telegraphed "never been here before" as soon as we walked in. Its opportunities like that that any business needs to seize on. The woman behind the counter unfortunately had a huge "cant be bothered" vibe and a) would not go down the the case so we can indicate what we want and b) was obviously in a mood. We felt we were bothering her. This was our unfortunate first impression. My advice would be use this as a teaching moment. Food can be great, which i see a lot of folks agree on but service "makes" businesses. Everybody that comes in that door, smile, greet, and thank them for coming in. We had such a lovely experience here! I made a reservation for 10am on a Saturday for 2 because I wasn't sure how busy it would be and my sister was visiting from out of town. We showed up at 10:10 and the lady at the counter was so nice about us being late and pointed out our reserved table. We probably would have had to wait 10-15 minutes otherwise for a table. We ordered 2 breakfast entrees and 2 lattes at the counter which totaled $21--totally reasonable for a delicious breakfast for 2. The banana French toast was absolutely incredible. I had never had French toast made with baguettes before--it was so thick and crunchy and the combination of that and the bananas and whipped cream made me want to scarf the whole plate down. We also split a strawberry crepe that was delicious. The lattes were a little weak but still good. Very friendly service and welcoming atmosphere. I will definitely be going back soon! read more

I ate here a few Sunday's ago with my girlfriend and her parents for brunch. I had found the place on yelp and was excited to see that it seemed like a cute little European marketplace inside. The menu was written on a chalkboard with a variety of salads and sandwiches with another chalkboard to the side with savory crepes. I decided on a coffee with the special of the day which was an avocado, sunny side up egg and bacon on a ciabatta and decided on the three bean salad as my side. The bread for my sandwich was awesome with it being nice and chewy. The avocado and bacon on my sandwich tasted nice as well with my only regret being that I didn't get the egg scrambled. The three bean salad was good with a sweet vinegar type sauce. All of my dining companions also enjoyed their meals as well. The bottom line for me is that I would definitely head back here in the future. I liked the feel of the place and the food was good as well. read more

My dining companion got the breakfast burrito. It was served with a prepackaged retail cup of salsa which was nothing more than tomato sauce. I used to love this cafe but it has gone downhill since under new ownership. The food is still the same, yes, but the experience is gone. Instead of French cafe music playing, there is either nothing playing or classic rock. Not what I want to hear at 7 am on a Sunday morning. If nothing is playing, then you can hear every word of the owner and workers' personal conversation. The pies look sloppy, the counters are uncleaned. If I am going to spend money to go out to eat, it is not just for the food but also for the experience. This used to be a favorite weekend breakfast destination for my family but we are hesitant to return. We are so bummed. I'm not writing this to be negative but if I were the owner I would want to know these things from a customers perspective. read more

Update: We continue to go here almost weekly, just some new suggestions: 3 bean salad is a solid choice. I order it almost every time tomato salad is my other go to, nice amount of basil in this one raspberry tart is a new discovery and my new absolute favorite skip the nutella cookie, it wasn't rich enough chocolate tart is definitely rich enough and a solid choice. It was too sweet for me for breakfast, but I don't ever like sweets early in the morning. My husband still comes home 1-2 nights a week with bread pudding from here. It has raspberry and chocolate.
