We were in Alexandria and I wanted to find a good breakfast spot. This one was top rated so we decided to try it. It is a cute place with plenty of seating. We ordered at the counter and the food was served within 15 mins ( it wasn't rush hour). I am so glad I ordered the crem brûlée blossom because it was just a delightful treat!! The veggie crepe was delicious and filling , the eggs in the croissant sandwich were scrambled to perfection! It's a small owned business so definitely support it ! Small and full of character, this cafe is tucked next to a parking garage, very close to the water. The food was good, the drinks were great, and the service was fast and friendly. The brick surround gives a very local historic ambiance. The only con is that the place is so small and the tables so close, you basically have to whisper if you don't want your conversation heard by everyone in the cafe. read more

We were visiting old Alexandria and we stopped this café for breakfast. They have excellent food and service. This was the best Avocado toast I have had! The flavors were absolutely delicious with the homemade grain bread and cream cheese. The appearance of food displays care about the food they deliver. I got the avocado toast without cucumbers, we also ordered a ham and cheese breakfast croissant, and a piece of marble bread. The avocado toast looked so good I could not wait to take a bite. Wonderful, Parisian-like cafe in Old Alexandria. It has indoor seats with wood panel walls: a bit like the pipe-smoke cafes of Paris. It has a small bar area, where canapés, coffees and small sweets are sold and wrapped. The service is okay. While I stand ready to order, the bar-girl comes out from behind and walks into the seat area to clear two coffee cups - don't do that, it's RUDE. Espressos only come in 2's and are not marked like that on menu. Still, the espresso was VERY good: thick, smooth, black as asphalt with a bite. I cut a shot of water into it: presto, delicioso!! For sale were choco croissants, muffins - but we always get those (AND THEY ARE ALWAYS RATED), so I went bonkers and ordered a tiny 'Creme Brûlée' tart, which was not wrapped or in a cup... .... you guessed it. It was delectable. Like a cup cake, but with some light brûlée-filling included. It missed maybe a slice of fruit on top (not too much trouble) which from a culinary perspective always make baked goods and tarts more sellable.. All in all Cafe du Soleil brought the sun out, as well as the warmth. Wonderful cafe. Light, cheap fare of sweets, croissants, cafe au lait and more. Location: Great Old Town Location close to the shops and Alexandria Waterfront. There is a $20 All Day Parking Garage next door but I prefer to look for available street parking or a lot that's a bit cheaper-especially if I am just popping in. Coffee: The coffee here is AMAZING! One major plus is that they have every type of milk alternative including my preference (coconut milk). The espresso is silky and strong. The White Mocha has a wonderful soft flavor. I didn't care for the drip coffee that they had on tap that day. It was of an acidic variety (but again, mostly my preference) but I still drank it black. Food: MUST Try includes the quiches. I recently had the leek quiche and I have to try to not drive down there daily. It was THAT good. Savory, flavorful, and cheesy and the crust was crispy. Enjoyed the side green salad as an addition. I enjoy traditional beignets so I started to complain when the beignets here had a fruit compote in the center. I TRIED TO COMPLAIN BUT I COULDNT. The sweet/tart compote turned out to be an AMAZING addition to the flaky outside. I really wanted to be disappointed but I couldn't be. It was very tasty. The full size salads are well portioned and plated. They have a nice selection of pastries and sweets. Staff: What I really enjoy about this coffee shop is that the staff is knowledgeable, welcoming, and they are especially good at service. Your order is brought directly to the table and the staff is happy to check on you during your visit without being overbearing. Atmosphere: The space is relaxed and warm. The walls are adorned with wine selections and worn brick. There is both table, chair, and an extended booth/wall seating that has electric plugs for those that need to use it as a work space. There couch/chair seating for a laid back and comfortable coffee date. The music playing is traditional jazz standards (think Ella, Nat King, and the greats) and plays low enough to be comforting and mood setting, rather than distracting. You could easily get reading or work done. This is a warm and non-pretentious atmosphere and will make you feel like you've transported out of the area. read more

Wonderful small restaurant in the heart of Old Town Alexandria. We went for lunch and were treated to a wide range of options. You could choose to enjoy breakfast, crepes and sandwiches. I choose the curry chicken which comes with a mixed green salad and it's served on French baguette. The bread had that crispy texture of a French baguette. My husband went with a green salad with chicken and pear and half a crusty baguette. They serve wine and beer and many people were taking advantage. In warm weather they have outdoor seating. Visited this establishment on March 27 at 11 am. The young man working the counter was incredibly rude and had the personality of a rock. Service was mediocre at best. The bathrooms were filthy, the toilet wouldn't flush, and there were no towels to dry my hands after washing them. The food was delicious and the ambiance was quite nice. Wow!! What an unexpectedly scrumptious find! Because I have a gluten allergy, I have not had crepes for years -- until walking into this gem in Old Town Alexandria. I enjoyed a fantastic savory crepe (made of buckwheat) with smoked salmon, capers, spinach and a delicious sauce with a beautiful, fresh side salad. BEST in Alexandria. I have lived in the area for over 13 years and northern va and DC have plenty of coffee shops but this one, Cafe Du Soleil is hands down number 1. Rare no metered parking is close, the French inspired food is the closest thing to Paris you will find. I've had crepes in Paris and Cafe Du Soleil's crepes are like eating authentic Paris crepes. There's not a bad option on the menu. The atmosphere is great for studying, reading or just chilling out. Do yourself a favor and come here for brunch or coffee/tea.
