Call Your Mother started as a neighborhood bagel shop in DC in 2018 and has expanded to several locations, including this Old Town spot and I hear that one will be opening in Wicker Park, my Chicago peeps (if it hasn't opened already). My go-to of a toasted sesame bagel was just perfect, along with the garlic-herb cream cheese. My friend had a gleneagle bagel with candied salmon cream cheese and enjoyed it -- but it was stuffed and overflowing and a little hard to eat. This place is just so charmingly decorated, with friendly people, and nice portions of good deli food. It was also quite crowded (and we went early). So I decided to search for another bakery that had bagels, and that's how I came across Call Your Mother Deli/Bakery. First things first...parking in Old Town is parking in Old Town. It's going to be limited, especially on a weekend, so don't expect to pull right up. I had to circle around for a bit, but the spot I eventually found was only about a two-minute walk, so it really wasn't bad. When I walked in, the place was bright, colorful, and really cute. It has a bit of a loft-style feel and the space was very clean and well put together. The staff was friendly, though not overly talkative, but everything moved pretty smoothly. They had a good variety of options.Breakfast sandwiches, regular deli-style sandwiches, bagels, and juices. I decided on a turkey bagel sandwich on an everything bagel with a juice. Now here's my biggest con: the pricing. The sandwich alone was $15.99, and the juice was $4.99. On top of that, there's the regular sales tax plus the Alexandria dining tax, so the total climbs pretty quickly. After tip, I paid well over $24 for a bagel sandwich and a juice. For me personally, that's pretty steep for what is essentially a bagel with toppings. That said, the food itself was very good. The bagel was fresh, chewy, and flavorful, exactly what you want from a good bagel. The ingredients tasted fresh, and the sandwich was satisfying. My only small tweak would be that I wish I had asked for a little more mayo, but that's more of a personal preference. Overall, the quality of the bagel is definitely there, and the sandwich was delicious. However, the pricing would probably keep me from coming back regularly. At that price point, it doesn't even feel like an occasional treat. It's just hard to justify paying that much for a bagel sandwich. If price isn't a concern, the food is solid. While the sandwich itself created a beautiful cheese pull and was really pretty to look at, parts of the bagel tasted burnt (although they didn't appear burnt) I'm not sure if it was the seasonings or edges but something left a burnt taste in my mouth. The bacon was not crispy and was a little bit soggy on the sandwich (I think because too many fillings?). Overall this sandwich just has too much going on. The one positive is that the sandwich was piping hot when I got it even though I did pick up order which sometimes I get concerned about if it's sitting there and gets cold, but this one definitely retained it's heat. I had also ordered a drink but it didn't make it in my bag when I picked up my order. I was able to call the store back and they gave me a credit for the drink. The store was pretty busy. Since it was my first time coming here, I asked which items they would recommend...Sun City & Royal Palm were the top recommendations and so I decided to order the Royal Palm and loved it so much I came back the next week and ordered it again! I wanted to order online but noticed that there was no option to add more salmon to the Royal Palm sandwich. When I asked in the store, they mentioned that the volume of orders they receive, they cannot accommodate additional orders online, but they can in the store. It was $6 charge for extra salmon. I am now always craving their Royal Palm...it is hard not to always get it! They are fast with the orders, so the waiting time is very short. This is located on the corner of South Payne Street & King Street. They have only meter parking all around the establishment and the meters are free on Sundays & Holidays. I am a huge bagel fan, and this place does not let down. The bagels tasted fresh and the fillings were substantial enough to be a meal by itself. The day before I tried the plane bagel with pumpkin cream cheese which was also delicious! This is a popular place so be prepared for a bit of a wait in the mornings. There's lots of seating and it looked like it would be great for kids as it was on the louder side. I was in the area Sunday morning and decided to pop into the Call Your Mother Deli's location in Old Town Alexandria. Opened in early 2024, the Old Town location of the popular local chain specializing in bagels and coffee is certainly larger and more welcoming than their DC outposts, which are mainly focused on Takeout orders. The tropical pink, teal, and yellow color scheme is prominent, with floral decorations throughout the interior. Plentiful seating, high ceilings, and exposed ductwork complete the modern design aesthetic. I greatly appreciate the ample seating, since it's always best to immediately enjoy a bagel when it's freshly toasted. I understand that it was a busy Sunday morning, but it took over 10 minutes for my order of two toasted bagels with cream cheese, to come out of the kitchen. This is not to imply, however, that the Old Town CYMD also does not do a brisk takeout and food delivery business. The pick-up area for orders placed in-person and online, was BUZZZING with people as well as Uber Eats and Door Dash drivers picking up bags of bagels and cups of coffee. TBH, this area can get a bit crowded and chaotic as everyone intently listens for their orders to be yelled out. While I'm generally underwhelmed by the bagels at CYMD, I will admit, that I appreciate the more unique non-traditional flavors, such as the toasted Za'atar topped bagel with cream cheese I ordered. This Middle Eastern spice traditionally is a blend composed thyme, oregano, marjoram or a combination of the three, and can also include other spices including sesame, sumac, cumin or coriander. The bagel was properly toasted, and had a healthy shmear of cream cheese; note to other bagel shops which skimp on their spreads. The spice mixture adhered nicely to bagel and I also appreciated that their was some notes of salt. It was also great to sit at one of the tables outside to dine al fresco, while enjoying the cool early summer morning. However - Insert snarky New Yorker's comment about the quality of DMV area bagels in 5...4...3...2... Honestly, I've never been super impressed with the CYMD bagels. I think the bagels are too chewy and somewhat underbaked after the boiling process. I mean, are the bagels here equivalent with what I find back in Brooklyn? IMHO, no they are not. The prices to me, are also, a tad on the high side. Two bagels with cream cheese and 20% tip, totalled a shade over $12. If I had added some plain drip coffees, the bill would've easily tallied close to $20. I dunno; seems a bit excessive to me. To be fair, prices are on par with what I find back home in NYC. But in the DC area, eating bagels from CYMD is seemingly the bougie thing to do; almost like drinking coffee, while flashing a Starbucks cup circa early 2000's. I guess if you get a bag of dozen bagels for $24...that's not a bad deal since it comes out to $2/each. For me, stopping into the Old Town CYMD will be an one-off occasion, and not a regular occurence. read more

Service was great; it was really busy, but our order of 2 breakfast sandwiches, a side, & 2 drinks came out hot & fast. The bagel was good, but I didn't really like the pastrami. It was overwhelmingly peppery. It tasted more like pastrami'd pepper than peppered pastrami. The latkes were delicious, but I would call them hash browns more than latkes. The vibes in the place are great. It's bright and colorful with manatees everywhere. Not sure how the manatees relate to bagels, but it makes for a fun and whimsical atmosphere. Overall, it was good, but I'm not itching to return. There are a lot of great breakfast spots on King Street, so I'll keep trying other places. read more

I'm a huge fan of bagels, and the Sun City at Call Your Mother did not disappoint. The bagel was fresh, the bacon perfectly cooked, and the egg and other fillings made it substantial enough to be a full meal. It's definitely one of the better brunch sandwiches I've had in NOVA. I also tried the strawberry matcha latte, and I was pleasantly surprised. I change my opinion on matcha with the seasons, but this one struck the perfect balance of sweetness and matcha flavor. It was smooth, refreshing, and unlike anything I've had elsewhere. We love a unique drink! If you're in the area and want a solid breakfast or brunch pick-me-up, the Sun City bagel and a strawberry matcha latte are a combo I'd highly recommend. Heard such great things and it has been on my list for a while, but my first visit didn't really live up to the hype. Street parking available- but may need to walk some as old town gets a bit busy in the mornings. Met a friend here for brunch and was able to snag a two seater table after waiting around for about 5 minutes. You order at the counter and they will call your name (but we thought we kept hearing our name went to the counter but orders weren't there- it'd be nice if they had pagers because it gets so loud inside). I was recommended the thunderbird as a popular item and my friend got the royal palm (but I'm not a fan of salmon). She seemed to enjoy hers but I didn't really like mine- it was very sweet and I ended up only being able to eat a quarter because it didn't agree with me. I got the honey oat latte and my friend got the maple french toast latter- both were alright, I liked how it wasn't very sweet but something was a bit off for me for this too. Great bagel shop for the DMV, it's not your typical NYC bagel shop, but close enough. The bagels are good, fresh ingredients, soft inside with a shiny toasty exterior. The coffee is pretty good taking in consideration that's a bagel shop and not a coffee shop. My only complain and the only reason I'm not giving 5 stars is the small variety of bagels, only 4-5 flavors and lately I haven't been able to find blueberry bagels (my favorite!) Ordered online here and food was ready for pick up within 15min. I made my own bagel with a pretzel bagel, turkey, cheese, egg, and hot honey. I thought the pretzel bagel was going to be more of like a pretzel but it tasted just like regular bread. I think they forgot to add the hot honey because I didn't taste or see any of it. This location has way more space than other ones I've gone to. Tables are well spaced, there's plenty of room while you wait for your food.
