He likes me, I like him because we speak the same language, the language of men who have taken a few hits and know how to hit back. I'm the tall classy type, hes the short booming vouce you hear from miles away. He's drinking bourbon, cheap heat to burn out the cobwebs. I've got rye in my shot glass, sharp and bitey. To wash it all down, a pair of Narragansetts sitting on the scarred wood like two cold anchors. She's sitting there sipping some fancy "Sweater Weather Sangria" out of a stemless glass, sweet and red, watching the candlelight flicker off the condensation, listeningto our conversation. Over in the corner, there's a wall built entirely out of wine bottles, rows upon rows stacked in the shadows behind glass like a monument to every drunk who ever lived. Someone mentioned absinthe, or maybe it was just the gloom making things warp at the edges, the kind of green-tinted haze that brings the hallucinations on if you stay too long. But we aren't leaving yet. We throw back the shots, take a pull of the beer, and let the room buzz around us. It's a good night. A rare one.

What to make of this place?…read more When we visited in September (at that time), a wanna-be sports bar had just taken over the Greek taverna Blue Sea Taverna (before that, two iterations of Akrotiri). Both Greek tavernas had failed or gone out of business. So we were curious to see what changes had been made. When we entered, we were initially confused because the seating, especially the lounge seating, did not create a sports bar vibe. Even adding a bunch of TVs did not give us that feel either. Instead, our initial impression was that they were trying to convert an old Greek taverna into a gastropub, similar to other well-known ones in the area. And I should also add we had not been following the local news about the controversy regarding their name association with a World War II fortified bunker that was blown up at the end of the Second World War, and only read about the controversy over their name after we left, and on social media. Apparently, the owner(s) were most likely unaware of its historical context when naming their establishment. So we did not factor that into this review. Upon entering the Wolf's Lair, the seating was that of a modified Mediterranean restaurant. We chose the comfy seating looking out towards 29th Street and 30th Avenue. It had been raining heavily, and so we were just glad to be inside. Because our initial impression was that we were in a Mediterranean gastropub, we ordered lamb chops with lemon potatoes. The waiter, who may have been one of the owners, informed us that this vegetable was not on the menu; however, when our chops arrived, as you can see from the photos, we were indeed served lemon potatoes. We got what we ordered, which made us happy, and the chops were cooked to perfection. As we usually do not drink alcohol, beverages were not factored into our review. However, there was one thing we found a little strange and creepy. When we left, one of the employees, presumably an owner, insisted on coming out to help take photos. This was a little off-putting. Nevertheless, we got some good shots. In writing this review, we spent a lot of time deliberating our experience at the Wolf's Lair. We focused on the restaurant, service, food quality, and atmosphere. While the overall experience was excellent, we did not find Wolf's Lair to have a sports-bar atmosphere, but rather a family-dining atmosphere. On the day we visited, there was hardly any action at the bar, and most of us seated were into the food, if nothing else, with one family having a birthday party for one of their children. Overall, we had a good experience. Whether we come back to see if the Wolf's Lair becomes an actual sports bar, well, that's another matter.

Im guessing it opens in the summer. I sat down with my niece while waiting for my sister and for a good 5-7 minutes, no one stopped by and gave a menu nor offered water. Finally after about 3 people walked by not saying anything, someone came. The area is not that big and 7 minutes isnt that long but to sit there any not be addressed by all the staff walking by was annoying. Finally my sister came and we were offered water and a menu. After hearing about the specials and asking for recommendations, we settled on the gnocchi (housemade potato gnocchi, burrata, peas, pesto sauce, toasted pine nuts), Pappardelle alla Bolognese (housemade ribbon pasta, meat sauce), and side of sautéed spinach. The food arrived and we were pleasantly delightful by the main. The gnocchi was so soft and creamy, the sauce was delicious. Im not a fan of gnocchi but this was so good. The papardelle was my meal and it was also so good. There was a lot of pasta and a good amount of meat sauce. It was also delicious. The spinach on the other hand was bland. It has no flavor and we had to add some salt. A few times we tried to call someone over to our table but felt like no one was paying attention. When we were done with our meals, my sister had a few pieces of gnocchi left. She asked for a box as it was to be my nieces lunch for tomorrow. I then said, can you also box up the spinach. A few minutes later, the server dropped off a bag with one container and said here's the spinach. We tried to call his attention but he was already walking away. Where was the gnocchi. Finally when we came back, we asked about it and he said oh I thought it was garbage. I said no we asked for it to be boxed. He said let me talk to the kitchen. He came back and said sorry, they cant do anything but one dessert will be on me. I guess thats fine but we more wanted the food for the baby. For dessert we ordered a tiramisu and pistachio gelato. The tiramisu was in a jar as opposed to a cake slice. One bite of the ice cream and I knew it was bad. It was grainy and sandy texture. I looked up why that would be and one reason stated it could be improper storage, like it was unfrozen or melted then refrozen. I wasn't chancing that. I told the server and said I couldn't eat it. He offered another dessert but I said know, then offered a limoncello shot. While I appreciate the offer, we weren't drinking before so that wasn't the best option to offer. I just said im fine without a replacement. When we got the bill, the dessert was taken off like he said he would. We paid and left. Overall the main course/pasta meals were delicious. The sides and desserts could use work. Service was alright. Id definitely come back for the food and to try some of the pizza.

"WOW..... Owners who GET IT...And I mean REALLY GET IT" 5 of 5 stars A friend of mine who lives in the area suggested we go here for brunch on April 6th. The place was packed and NOW I know why. Both OWNERS get what it means to be in the restaurant business. The customer service was, what other restaurants should learn from these guys. From the time we walked in I felt as if they were waiting for us to just show up. They knew who was first in line and who was to be seated next. I noticed that people were even greeted by name. What the both owners did is what got my attention!! They touched ever table ( if you don't know what that means, go here and you will find out for yourself.) They even bused tables and wiped them down, it was not beneath them and they even help out by cleaning up a spill on the floor and they were not done cleaning the floor until it was dry. They took the 2 min test to the next level. They made time for small talk with just about table and everyone in the place....WOW. This is not some fine dining place or the Four Seasons as they wouldn't even come close to what these guys do or did. I hope you guys find time to read this or someone tells you about this review because this is a place that should give lessons to other restaurants/owners and staff on how to treat people (your customers). it is called Personal Touch. Cafe Luka never disappoints when I'm back in the city! I took my wife and kids for lunch yesterday and had a great experience! My 8 year old boy is always a nightmare when we go out, but not this time!!! The service was so quick and the food was so good, he behaved the best I could ever remember. One of the owners even brought him and his little sister a black and white cookie to share since they left their plates clean. He enjoyed it so much we even went back later that night! My wife and I didn't mind since there were so many things on the menu we wanted to try. The prices were competitive with other places in the area and I thought it was really clean. All around good! Always good to us and especially after long nights that we work my colleagues and I come in 2-3 weekly, they treat us right and with great fast service. The management is always on top of it with it be more coffee or in our case a little extra Mimosa topped off, they are good there! and to a review regarding a lost gift card these guys are as honest as they come because about a month ago one of my friends dropped a $ 100 bill he wrapped in his pocket and fell corner of booth, we came back 2 days later and the manager said I believe you dropped this not too may place would ever do that! Cafe Luka is simply one of the best restaurants on the upper east side of Manhattan that I had visited. If I could give a rating of 10 I would. The service was outstanding with all workers being polite and helpful. Also the restaurant was spotless from tables to bathrooms and everywhere in between. The food was some of the best I had on my NY visit. Being near the hospital district this restaurant is good for both visitors and locals. Best dining experience I've had in a long time. Early morning appointment at Cornel Weil and when I got out I wanted breakfast. My old place apparently got closed by the board of health (EEEKKKKKK!!!!) Never tried Luka until this morning, but friendly and quick wait staff got my order, got the coffee on the table and BINGO I am having a great breakfast. Terrific spot to have brunch, a few drinks, sit in the dining area or at the bar. Menu offers a variety of plates along with options to enjoy a clean healthy meal. The have a selection of what they call their market vegetables which are fresh and seasonal. You can just have a market plate of those if you're not into a meat based meal. Friendly, quick, and helpful service. Our server asked if we had any food allergies (my gal does) and made a great suggestion for an alternate item.

LPQ (Le Pain Quotidien), you've got competition! Other than noise -- it's REALLY loud in Westville -- lunch was great, with enough variety to keep each of us happy. I had a delicious falafel sandwich. It was stuffed with cabbage slaw, tomato, arugula, ranch yogurt sauce and harissa tahini served on a potato bun. With a choice of fries or salad, I went with arugula, topped with marinated red onion. They don't skimp on portions. Other than not being able to eat the sandwich like a sandwich, I was really happy. (I cut off pieces.) A few women ordered salmon with thick grilled asparagus. (I prefer thin.) Someone got a turkey burger and sweet potato fries. It didn't look great -- turkey burgers generally don't -- but she said it was delicious. Our server Danny was attentive, keeping our water glasses filled and all the orders straight. PLUS .... we each got our own check!

Green Kitchen is a cozy neighborhood diner with one of the prettiest outdoor setups I've seen. The entire corner entrance is covered in colorful flowers, and the wraparound patio makes it feel more like a garden café than a diner. They even have covered seating along the side street, which kept us cool while giving me an excellent vantage point to supervise pedestrians, squirrels, and anyone carrying bacon. I settled onto my cooling mat under the table and got comfortable while Mom and Dad ordered. Mom had the Short Rib Tacos with a Diet Coke. She declared them delicious. Dad went with the classic scrambled eggs and bacon. Guess which meal looked easier to "accidentally" share with the dog? Neither. Apparently both plates were under strict human protection. There isn't a dog menu, and no water bowl was offered, but the staff was friendly, the patio was spacious and comfortable, and the atmosphere made it an easy place to relax for a long brunch. Dogba's Verdict Beautiful flower-covered entrance? Large covered outdoor patio? Elite people-watching opportunities? Cool enough for a summer brunch? Dog water bowl? Taco samples for the dog? Also no. 4 paws out of 5. I'd happily return... but next time I'd like to negotiate at least one short rib taco as part of my appearance fee.
