Meh. I actually feel guilty writing this review because I've only been there once and I ate outside in the cold. But... I don't get why this place is so popular. The service is counter service and is polite but otherwise quite normal. The food was, well, it was okay. I'm guessing it's because their pricing is still within the realm of affordable for a decent meal. It's very busy there with lots of business and the menu has variety enough for budgetnistas to splurge. Personally, I'm past the stage in my life where eating off a plastic tray is okay. Also, gluten free and low cost generally don't mix in food service; Cafe Madeline is no exception. But their base doesn't require GF fair, just decent fair at a price that doesn't force you to change your lifestyle. While they have a strong loyal following and have probably have earned it, this place is just not for me. read more

The food was great, very friendly and helpful staff but the system they have in place to order then go get your drinks at a different spot then go back to get your food is very strange and when the place is packed there's really no place to stand to wait for your drink. They call out your name like a Starbucks. There's really no reason for that. It should be more of a traditional restaurant style. The food was a little pricey but overall good. That female staff member in the gray t shirt and cap was so rude today I had to leave this review. She's been less than friendly and has this air of being annoyed on alot of days, but today she really had zero professionalism in how she spoke to me. All I asked her is how many strips of bacon are in a side order for $5 and she responded: "I don't know. I'm not the person to ask." Um... Actually, you are because you work there. At any point, she could've easily turned around and asked one of the line cooks but instead she goes further with her boorish attitude and says to me: "It's your world, I'm just living in it." I have no idea why she thinks it's ok to talk to customers like this when they're just asking simple questions but the owner will definitely lose patrons bc of her. read more

I want to love this place. I used to really like it years ago but I stopped getting food here for the following reasons: 1-They always had a big menu (with a lot good food options) but they keep adding more and more and it got very overwhelming, especially when you realize that most things in each category are very similar to eachother with minor variations. I wish they had more concise menu and people can make subs if they want. It takes so much time to go through the options , by the time I'm done I am over it and everything start to seem unoriginal (and, frankly, therefor too expensive) so I give up and just get my iced my coffee. 2- I hate to say it but this place really doesnt seem clean. During the time I sit with their dictionary (menu) and contemplate if I'd rather be hungry or unhappy with what I get, I notice the state of the place I choose hungry. The plated food always looks well-handled when the waiters bring it out so maybe the kitchen is clean, but I often see spots of collected dust around the room, especially the little part where they keep the high-chairs. Kind of makes you lose your appetite They also don't really have windows/ventilation by the tables. if the kitchen makes something smoky the whole place basically feels sits in a bacon hotbox for sometime. If a fly gets in there then it really has no place to go, and its joining you for your meal The place has so much potential, and its weird to say this about place that has been open for a while, but people still rave about the food so I have hope. This is the hipster Brooklyn study cafe of my dreams: 1) an incredible variety of healthy, interesting, delicious drinks AND food 2) free wifi! 3) ample seating 4) great lighting 5) right by the subway station 6) clean bathroom. No but actually do you know how incredibly difficult it is to find a conducive study spot that you can squat at allll day with good drinks and food you can actually enjoy every day? If I lived in this neighborhood, I would be here every day. No joke. Alas, I do not ... I had a few hours before small group at a friend's nearby, so I studied here. Food & drink: - Rose latte: ACTUAL roses in a drink that actually tastes really rosy. The only other place in NYC where the rose drink was actually real rose (and tasted like it) was Grace Street. Loved this. - Green smoothie featured on wall: Ugh I don't remember what this was called but it was so healthy and refreshing. I got the complimentary bee pollen, which made me feel super hipster. Not too sweet but definitely a great drink. I totally didn't need this after the rose latte, but it sounded too good to pass up. - Curry lamb bowl with quinoa and avocado: This was my dinner, and it was incredible (and pretty inexpensive for the quantity, instagrammability and taste). I marveled at how amazing it tasted for being such an obviously healthy bowl. If healthy food tasted this good all the time, I would have abs. It's a shame this is so far away from me (grr why did I ever leave Brooklyn?!) but I'm definitely gonna find excuses to make the trek out here. read more

Great food but you guys do a terrible job packing drinks in delivery orders. All your staff does is place yellow tape over open lids of drinks?! the tape is never secured and hardly covers the open portion of the lid. This has happened to me orders on numerous occasions and just happened again. The drink spills out and ruins my food. please figure out a better way of packing drinks. Truth be told, I had a parfait bowl and it was good. But it's a parfait bowl and I doubt they make homemade yogurt. Correct me if I'm wrong. However, I waited for an hour for our food. Yes. It was on the weekend but please, an hour for a yogurt parfait and avocado bread. Jesus. Another issue at cafe Madeline is the smell. This used to be my favorite neighborhood spot. But as the menu has grown ever larger (along with the prices), the attention to detail has fallen. The last 3 times that I picked up food from here, my order was missing key ingredients i.e. the bacon in my $18 Madeline breakfast plate or the roasted tomatoes in my BLT, or the hummus in a chicken/apple/hummus sandwich . The quality of the ingredients is great, but the carelessness of putting them together makes the cost not worthwhile. Maybe cut your menu in half so your staff can better manage making the dishes? When I first moved to this neighborhood - I was excited to find this place. They seemed to have good breakfast eats and a custard donut to die for. Every visit after that has bought nothing but disappointment. It seems like the quality of the food they put out for takeout or delivery is drastically different from what they serve at the tables. They always throw a salad into your to go box so your sandwich is nice and soggy by the time you get home. The orders are barely seasoned and they seem to go for quantity over quality in terms of how much meat, egg or tuna they'll pile onto one slice of bread. I thought I played it safe by getting a tuna melt this morning and what I got was burned toast, a slab of cheese and tuna with no Mayo or seasonings. Ive come here twice and got the avocado toast both times. The first time there was a TON of avocado on the toast. The second time they skimped me (maybe only in comparison to the first time). The second time I chose to dine in and got the orange lemonade which was nice and refreshing along with the yellow fin avocado toast. It was good. You do end up paying about a $6-$8 premium was the 8-9 little cubes of yellow fin but it taste fresh and its the middle of brooklyn so i guess its just par for the course. My partner got french toast and what she described as one of the best ice coffees shes ever had. Service was quick. Its not exactly wait service. You order at the front and some brings your food to whatever table you sit at and they check in with you once just to make sure youre alright. read more

This place was abuzz with locals when my coworkers and I stumbled in for a quick bite en route to a work meeting. The variety of healthy options came as a pleasant surprise. I ordered the crispy kale salad with roasted cauliflower and rice puffs, expecting it to be like the crispy rice salad dish from SQIRL in Los Angeles. Alas, it was not that, but it was still very tasty and a nice respite from the onslaught of bagels and buttery pastries that I'd been shoveling since arriving in NYC. Wonderful staff and great food! Come here if you're in the area looking for brunch food or a place to do some work (if you don't mind smelling like food after). I came here on a weekday to do some work and eat when they were doing maintenance at my apartment. I was very impressed by the grilled chicken, smoked bacon, and avocado sandwich which came with a delicious tomato spread and fresh cherry tomatoes. They definitely do not skimp out on ingredients or portion sizes. Looking around, I saw a lot of other beautifully plated dishes / bowls that I cannot wait to try next time. During lunch time, the place does get packed so I can't imagine how busy it might be over the weekends. If you're looking to do some work, try to snag a table in the back where all the outlets are. For the longest time the banner obnoxiously said "COFFFEEEEEEEEEE" now it says something equally obnoxious, "I'm the one your looking for". This would be fine if this wasn't repeated THREE TIMES on the same block. This place owns three other over priced restaurants with tacky branding. Sometimes I think to myself, does Zardulu own this nebulous restaurant chain? I'm waiting on baited breath to see Pizza Rat make a dramatic appearance. It seems like an elaborate joke. The place across the street, also owned by the same people, has changed themes and names multiple times. It was Yellow belly, first, then Beer Taco, now it's just a Indian restaurant called Ayurvedic Plate that's also a co-working space? The other place, down the street has also been subject to various banner changes and names. They serve overpriced burgers, in an attempt to raise the median price of food in the area. I don't have a huge problem with the food, like I said, it's fine. I do have a problem with crazy expensive coffee price gouging along with bizarre and truly flabbergasting branding decisions. read more

Good place to grab a quick bite! I like the vibe here - the interior decor is adorable and the employees are friendly. In terms of the actual food, the menu items are a bit overpriced and taste just mediocre. I ordered the Eggcellent Breakfast Sandwich, which was tasty, but way too oily. The oil from the chorizo drenched through the pastry onto my plate, making it almost uneatable. I'd recommend ordering if you ask them to drain the oil before serving. My friends ordered the Not Your Father's Bagel, Madeline Breakfast Plate, and one of their wraps. They all looked tasty, but didn't seem out of the ordinary. I think I personally ordered the wrong brunch item, so I'd stop by here again to try something new. Overall, a cute spot for brunch if you're in the area! read more
