Disappointed, but not overly so. Considering Wichita isn't a huge city where competition for Mediterranean food would be more present, this seems to be their standard. If you've had authentic food, though, then don't expect it here. The kebab meat (both beef and chicken) was lacking the bright pops of citrus, garlic and parsley. Gyro meat seems to be the frozen heat-and-eat type. Our server was sweet though, so that made it better. The best part was the complimentary tiramisu. On a side note, the decor is quite lovely! 5 stars for food 0 for service We stood there in the front for quite awhile waiting to be seated. The waitress walked by us several times and then finally said to sit anywhere. My friend told her the table we wanted was dirty and needed to be cleaned. She cleared the table but did not wipe it down completely. The table still had crumbs on one side. It took about six to seven minutes for the waitress to walk back and get us drinks. Another 5 minutes for her to take our orders. Food came in about 10 mins. Food was good. Loved the beef shawarma hummus. My pasta carbonara was delicious as well. Portion was huge. We barely ate for 20 mins and she brought us our checks. We felt rushed. They weren't even that busy! There were only four other occupied tables. I don't know why service was so slow in the beginning considering there were approx 4 servers at the front (I counted). Our waitress never smiled once. She wouldn't even take her time to talk to us or make eye contact. When I helped her clean up our table (aka put together plates and picked up a dropped spoon), she quickly turned around and said "thanks" as she walked back to the kitchen. She was not friendly AT ALL! Nevertheless, I gave her the benefit of the doubt and I tipped over 30%. Perhaps she was having a bad day? There are a lot mediterranean places to go all over time but if your looking for something with a change on the menu with lively flavor come here. My girlfriends & I come here when we want to get together, quick luck from work, or my fav a nice lil date night for you and your significant other. It's a great night for a first night date with a girl you want to surprise, especially if she never been here. Their curry dish is soooo tasty & I always like to add a couple of chicken kabobs with it as well. To top it off at the end of your meal they provide a small 1 bite of desert to each guest. Do not base your ticket price on their website menu. It has increased about 40% over posted prices on their website. Their food is very good but I cannot recommend the restaurant based on deception in pricing. It is not that difficult to upload new pricing to the website. We returned after a long time away and were disappointed. Quick seating but long time for server to make contact. My salmon dish was overcooked and very dry. This is not a burger place but my sons burger, also over cooked and scant serving of French fries. Mom gave back the Tilapia over lentils special, barely touched. Server didn't even ask if she could take home box it. Odd. Totally understand it's hard to find good, experienced servers--our server was just okay--but there were no smiles on anyone's face here. This review begins with a story. About 11 years ago, my family started dining regularly at N&J's, a fixture among Wichita mediterranean restaurants. Part of what made this place so successful was the awesome waitstaff. One of the best servers was Therese. She was always so happy to see us and quickly knew us by name. Well, the time came for her to leave N&J's and it never was quite the same. So guess what? Therese is back! She's opened up Cafe Maurice with her husband and the food could not be more awesome. Went there for lunch today and was amazed by the hummus (garnished with sweet, juicy grape tomatoes, cucumbers, a jalapeno and a pickle), greek salad (add grilled chicken kabobs for a real wowie) and the kafta sandwich (perfectly toasted in a pita wrapper). They even gave us each a small square of tirimisu ... FOR FREE! And they definitely don't need to do that (though I'll gladly accept free desserts). Why? BECAUSE IT WAS AMAZING! Can't wait to go back here again. read more

It seems like the Lebanese cooking around wavers between the down-to-earth places like N&Js and Byblos and the trendier places like Bella Luna. While I'm all for trying to bring a finer level of dining than what it's typically assumed, the problem with our Lebanese is that it tends to stray from its roots the higher it gets. Look at Bella Luna or Adrian's menu and find me a Middle Eastern entree. You'll find plenty of pastas, Santa Fe chicken, hamburgers, and steaks, but none of that is Lebanese by any means. While Cafe Maurice is still victim to some of these errant menu dishes - Pasta Diablo inexplicably makes an appearance, and (spoiler alert!) tiramisu is a complete world away, geographically - but to me it seems to best walk the line between traditional Middle Eastern cooking and upscale dining. For me, the quintessential Middle Eastern dish is the mixed grill. When you're looking at several pages of Arabic trying to find something familiar yet still with an air of foreign-ness, you can't go wrong with a simple trio of grilled meats, and the combination chicken, beef filet, and kafta was as good as I've gotten anywhere else in the world. Combine this with some hummus, some pita, and some excellently sauteed vegetables (maybe not in the realm of authenticity, but still very well done), and I'm good to go. My only gripe is, surprisingly, with the hummus, which I found a bit underseasoned and lacking in everything but tahini. Not bad by any means, but not an excellent rendition, either. I don't know if them giving away portions of tiramisu to every customer is good business sense, but it's certainly good taste bud sense, as it was a truly great presentation of the Italian dessert. Eating at Cafe Maurice was one of those times where I was walking out to my car in my parking lot genuinely and completely pleased with the whole of my meal. There's some great Lebanese food to be found in Wichita, and there's also some Lebanese restaurants that try to appeal to everyone, but there's not a lot that walk the line between presentation and home cooking that you find here, and you owe it to yourself to visit. read more

OH YEAH--it's that curious Wichita invention called "Lebanese Mediterranean Kitchen Sink (Except for Greek, Which We Will Never Have, For Reasons No One Knows)," all gussied up in nice tablecloths so the bourgeoisie will come and spend their cash--the BELLA LUNA recipe for big ICT success! Why does Cafe Maurice serve tiramisu and pasta dishes along with kafta, hummous, babaganouj, falafel, and kebbe?! So you see my dilemma: Cafe Maurice does what they do very well (the tiramisu was outstanding, by the way, ALSO some of the best I have ever had--not easy to pull off considering how ubiquitous this dessert is); even those cursed pastas are good. But the restaurant totally, shamelessly plays into the worst aspects of the Wichita dining scene by serving super-safe pseudo-Italian "mediterranean" fare alongside Middle Eastern that we do really well but just don't want to go too far with. This bothers me. This is not the mall! Can we get something real? We like LEBANESE food in the ICT, that's clearly established. Why errbody gotta go all rogue and include that other stuff instead of deepening the experience with more Lebanese or Middle Eastern specialties??? "Arrr! We'd wondered what happened to Therese after she left N&J's!! Now we know!! We still love N&J's and Byblos and MIF Deli and College Hill Deli and everywhere in Wichita that has the True Soul Foods - Hummas & Baba Ghanoosj, but Cafe Maurice is rapidly becoming our favorite. AND she keeps Mushroom Soup and Lentil Soup in stock EVERY time!! No more rushing to N&J's just to find out they sold their last bowl of mushroom soup an hour or two before! I can't add too much to what our excellent reviewers have already commented on. I've had 3 servings of free tiramasu, one for each visit. The third time I was there was with a new group of people who were there for the first time, and some of the wait staff recognized me and didn't offer the tiramasu. So I asked Therese about it saying I had brought to her this new group who had never been there (she already recognized me on my 3rd visit there.)...and posthaste! we had a round of tiramasu on the table. Everything that I've tried or that I've tasted of the various dishes that my fellow tablemates have shared with me has all been wonderful - didn't matter if it was Lamb Kebab or Gyros platter or Fattoush salad, Greek Salad, the two soups, the third soup was a vegetable beef, I think? it was also yummy. They don't make bad food here at all!!!!! And there were no bellydancers either - so we could have a peaceful family meal and not have to shield the eyes of our impressionable youth. (Not my intent to appear to be trashing belly dancers in general, because, as an art form, the true belly dancing is a VERY skilled and expressive form of dance which I greatly admire. I've been to the Middle East and seen some of the best dancers in the world. I've attended concerts and public performances of belly dancing troupes from around the world. But... some of the belly dancers who perform at other local Mediterranean restaurants are rather new, or they come to it after perhaps working as pole dancers or exotic dancers, and I think inadvertently mix the two genre's of dance together in a way that ends up being very embarrassing for families with young or pre-teen youth. True - we don't have to go there, and unfortunately that's what we've had to do, but there are times when that's the food we want and Saturday evening is when we can get together with our friends for a end-of-the-week re-connection after a week or two of being apart from our friends. Now that we have the lo-jac on where Cafe Maurice is, we'll know to go there on Saturday evenings when we would like a peaceful evening to just sit and chat with our friends and celebrate each other, instead of having to wait for the noise and the intrusion of the dancers.). read more

There are a few desserts that I've never quite understood. Sponge cake layered with cream and topped with espresso is one of them. Tiramisu was always one of those snobbish old lady desserts my mother would order - I imagine - ironically, to be more American. Cafe Maurice proved me wrong. That little complimentary slice of their signature dessert after a decadent meal of a grilled fish sandwich spread with zesty tahini and filled with crunchy lettuce and amazing hummus (that needed just a pinch of salt) that didn't ooze off of crisp pita chips, but melted over my tongue, made me crave more. ...so much more, in fact, that I ordered an additional slice of tiramisu. Luckily for me, these savvy owners understand the obesity epidemic, and that slice was just a few bites...or maybe that's just a marketing ploy to get me to to go back and eat more. Effective. This review is long overdue. I've been coming here on average once every couple of months since it opened. To be honest, I was even thinking of never writing a review, because I'm afraid one of these days, I'm going to go over here to get some delicious food and the line will be out the door.However, I want to keep coming here, thus, giving this restaurant a well-deserved 5 star rating (a first for me!) seems justified. Food: Fantastic. There are some places I go and only order the same thing, or float between some old faithfuls. However, everything I've tried on this menu is great. My personal favorites are the Chicken & Artichoke dish & the Pasta Diablo dish. I am not ashamed to polish off a whole plate of Hummus with my husband, either. The best part is the reward at the end - a small, yet satisfying plate of complimentary Tiramisu. Service: Every time I'm here the staff are busy - however, they always make time to clean off a table (if there is an empty one, that is) when they see people come in. I've always had good service (ie. wait time for drinks, food, refills, etc.) and the owner (or manager? both? idk...), who always has a smile on her face, can be seen checking the tables to see how their food is. Atmosphere: This restaurant seems best suited for couples,due to the small size, although I have seen families here as well. Finally made it to Cafe Maurice. I told the waitress that this was the first time there for my friend and I. She had an awesome running knowledge of the menu. She said in the two years she had been there, no significant change had been made to the menu. For the appetizer, we ordered the hummus. Wow they gave us a ton of pita bread and crispy chips. And the hummus was nicely plated between small pieces of veggies. I ordered the chicken with artichoke pasta, and my friend ordered the pasta carbonara. We each had the tomato bisque as the side. The waitress brought out the soups for each of us after the hummus. We were both pleased with the bisque. It's not on the menu, so you have to ask specifically for it. The chicken was broiled tender. The artichoke and caper sauce was excellent. The spaghetti was a flat noodle and was tender. My friend's dish was nice as well, but I liked mine better. Neither of us finished the entrees after eating the hummus. Cafe Maurice gives a complimentary tiramisu that is not made with rum, but rather with a mocha. It's a small piece which is fine for not having been able to finish the entrees. It's a great place with great service. I would definately come back to try more. read more

Except for the falafel, which was fine but not 5-star, I felt like someone dropped me off in Lebanon or Israel. I came in totally indecisive and ordered the meza platter and two beef kabobs. The food came out at astonishing speed and had everything on the appetizer menu and some yogurt to dip things. A basket of pita chips and soft pita were also served. I was here a little over a year ago (kinda during the birth of this establishment). Pastries -- the best. I loved the taste of their ma'amoul pastries (the date-filled ones!! mmm). Also had a slice of Tiramisu -- OMG, the taste of chocolate & hazelnut on this cake is UNREAL. It would make a great birthday cake for sure. Dinner -- Great tabouli, hummus, kafta. Everything was moist and tasty (no pun). Very healthy stuff in that all food groups represented in a meal. Petite food but certainly quality over quantity applies here. A lesson all restaurants must learn -- if you're going to serve in large quantities, make sure it tastes good! Atmosphere -- Nice, modern feeling in a great location. Overall -- in my opinion, of all the Middle Eastern-Mediterranean food choices available to Wichitans (in my 7 years of residence), I have found that Cafe Maurice is the best. HUMMUS!! I did not know how good hummus could taste, I will never eat the grocery store stuff again! The fried pita chips and fresh naan bread it comes with put this appetizer over the top! This is a total hidden gem in what seems to be a serious over-abundance of Mediterranean restaurants in Wichita. The owner here is so sweet and the service is very good. I've eaten lunch here twice and had to incredible dishes. I had the beef kabob wrap with tabouli (YUM!) and then some type of chicken shwarma special that was fabulous over a bed of rice, which I usually don't care for. On our way to Cinnamon's Deli, another great restaurant we love, we saw the new restaurant Cafe Maurice, a few spots down. It has a mix of French and Mediterranean cuisine, which is very interesting. I had heard a few good things from people I know, so we thought to give it a shot. I had also heard that there was a N&J connection, another favorite Middle Eastern restaurant of mine. Overall the Cafe Maurice review gets an outstanding restaurant review. We loved it. Here's why: it was clean, well priced, you are immediately served food when you sit down (big factor in our family) and free dessert! - We will get to that later. First of all, they bring out pita chips to nibble on while you are deciding on your dinner choice. This is great for hungry people or families who need things to keep the kids entertained. My wife ordered the special, which was Beef and Spinach served over rice. (pictured below) It was such a perfect cold weather soup-like meal that really hit the spot. A hearty and rich dish with pieces of meat and the Lebanese taste of grape leaves with a hint of cinnamon. Also very much like the St. George's Lebanese dinner. The special was a great price too, only $10. I got the Hummus Shawarma with Chicken. Pretty much you take a Chicken Shawarma and it's deconstructed on top of a bed of hummus = awesome. What's cool about this one, is that they serve it with roasted red peppers in the dish. I have never had that before but it was a great addition. Coming in at another good price point, the Hummus Shawarma with Chicken was only $8. The best part about this restaurant? They bring you free Tiramisu for dessert. Not just one for the table and everyone gets a tiny spoon to share, but one per person! Cafe Maurice is a great restaurant to check out if you haven't already.
