A friend and I had planned to try Nook on Friday. When we arrived to find it closed for a private event, we yelped the nearest alternative and voila! we ended up snagging the last outdoor table at Cafe Meuse. The outdoor tables are in the front, so it's not exactly the relaxing sunny day wine bar patio you're picturing in your head, but it works. Just close your eyes and listen to the soothing sounds of the 12 bus as it rolls by. I started with a glass of cote du rhone which was very good but just a tad warm. I'm not sure what happened to that bottle because my second glass, a rockpile rose, was a perfect temperature. Both delicious. They have a great list with a lot of variety. We split a meat and cheese plate which was amazing and plenty for 2. Charcuterie and cheese has got to be my favorite thing ever. Service was ok, it seemed like they only had 1 server working the whole restaurant but we weren't in a hurry. Would 100% return. read more

Total hidden gem! My friend and I had a cheese plate and drinks here while we waited for our reservation at seven hills. Cafe Meuse turned out to be the better part of the night. The cheese plate was the best I've ever had - loved all 4 cheese. The best part was actually the in-house made crostini. We ate about 4 servings of it and I even wanted to buy more (unfortunately they can't sell them!) In addition, there was live jazz music! Sounds like from the other reviews you shouldn't go here for dinner. But definitely come get a cheese plate with crostinis and some drinks to enjoy the jazz music! read more

Hands down to this place for being able to cater to my BFF's b-day bash with 20+ guests. Venue is not too big so it seemed like we took over. Service was fantastic as they were willing to accommodate with any request and the food was great for the price. My fave is the prosciutto wrapped figs....I can pop 10 of these things. This is a great addition to the Hyde St. bars/restaurants. Small but cozy place that gets is great to meet a friend to catch up, or a group of friends to chill at. Staff are attentive and the owner is always there. Later in the evening you will find him waltzing with some ladies or just chatting at the bar with his customers. Lots of regulars here! I want to give Meuse 3.5 stars Just to put it out there - Something about Meuse felt weird to me. There are plenty of reasons why I might have felt like this - but I think mainly it is that while its a small space with only about 7 or 8 tiny tables and the bar - the servers were insanely busy and made me nervous. Of course they were both sweet and friendly but why did it take 20 minutes to get some bread with my glass of wine? The cheese plate was pretty, i admit - but so dull. Cheese plates should be exciting and should include weird random cheeses you haven't had before. Otherwise I can buy them in bulk from Safeway - like these cheeses: goat cheese, gouda, bleu and brie. BORING!! and for $14 not so much of a deal. Meuse is a nice to place to sit in the corner and have a wine. Don't sit at the bar, it will make you anxious. Oh! I almost forgot, I took the cable car there which worked out fine, but it took my friend a full 45 minutes to park. It's impossible to park - to reiterate. Do not drive here. read more

I've passed by this cute wine bar so many times when driving on Hyde and when contemplating where to go for an after dinner drink on Friday, I suggested this place to my friend. It's a small, but typical wine bar, dimly lit - and crowded but not so that you can't find a seat or get served quickly. The night we were there was great for people watching (read: some great drunks) and service was excellent (and funny as the server commiserated with us on some of the trainwrecks in the bar). I had the pick any three white wines flight for $15 and chose the three chardonnays. All were excellent and I've got to say - it was $15 well spent as the pours were MORE than generous. Highly recommend - and will definitely be back! read more

I love this place. The wine selection is awesome, the atmosphere is definitely fun but relaxed. The servers are friendly and like to chat. I love this place.. yes, because it's less than a block from my place.. but also the staff is friendly, and usually have good suggestions of what to try by the glass, and the food is yummy.. using seasonal ingredients... so the menu does change a little often. The only time I'm not happy here is when they are packed.. 'spose that's good for bizness :o) If you get desperate for parking there is a lot at Polk & Pacific next to the Jug Shop. A perfectly spacious yet intimate wine bar that doesn't have you packed in like sardines while trying to relax and enjoy wine like some other places in the city. Came in on a Saturday night and got a nice high-top table for two to grab a glass of wine before dinner. I had a cab blend that was delicious and the price point was to be expected. The place was full but not crowded (large group of girlfriends and lots of couples) and had a great vibe. The service was not great (slow, forgot waters) but as this was our first time there and it was a Saturday, I'm not going to base my review off of that as the environment and wine were great. I wish I knew our servers name, because she provided our group of six with the best service I've had in the city in a long time. She was able to memorize flights of wine and food orders, kept our water and wine full and checked on us constantly while we told stories, laughed and had a great time. The bar was full and I was surprised how attentive she was. We also tried the Cheese plate, olive mixture (which included a few more exotic olive types in it), and the chicken satay which came with a free side salad that was delicious. Chicken was moist and we ate every last bite. They have cheep beers too! Most are $5-6 and even Chimay which is normally $10, was $8 here. Free bread too. read more

Great place to meet my best lady to catch up. It's in her neighborhood so it's totally convenient. It wasn't crowded and the music was just right for talking. The wine list is nice and not overwhelming. The girl who was working was a doll. she even brought us fresh baked bread even though we weren't having dinner there. My BF and I stopped here on our way to Hyde Street Seafood House on Friday night. It was surprisingly warm out so, despite it still being gloomy, we decided to sit outside. We walked into Cafe Meuse and it was oddly hot inside. I mean it was seriously about 90 degrees so I was glad we decided to sit outside. We ordered a bottle of sparkling rose from the friendly bartender and she offered to bring it out to our table for us. It was really tasty and I'll probably go back for the same $35 bottle. The wine prices seem to include tax as my bill was exactly $35. I will be heading back to Meuse (possibly for 2 for 1 Ladies night on Thursday!) for the awesome ambiance next time I head over to this awesome stretch of Hyde Street. read more

Such a little gem!! They really do have a great spot and some wonderful selections. I loved doing a flight of their Pinot Noirs. Super fabulous finger foods to go with the wines! The Charcuterie was so good that I had to order two! Came here last Friday with my boyfriend for a couple glasses of red wine. Our server was sweet and she let me try some wine recs but I did not like them. I tried the Pinots and they were okay. My boyfriend got a glass of zinfandel and sine I didn't like my tastes, I got a glass of his. Overall, the wine we tried was nothing special. This is my favorite wine bar in the entire city. Have a glass of wine, watch the cable cars go by... a truly classic San Francisco experience. What's even better than the wine, you say? It's interesting to see so many high reviews here since when I went this past Saturday night around 9:30 p.m., it was not a happening spot-- all the business was over across the street at the other wine bar (which we went to but didn't want to wait 30 minutes for a table). This place is okay-- prices are pretty reasonable and there's a nice selection of wine. The Anthony Hammond riesling (2004) was a lovely dessert wine ($8 per glass, $33 per bottle). The waiter was very helpful in suggesting some wines based on our preferences-- not pretentious at all-- and let us sample a chardonnay and something else before we decided on the riesling. Also shared the caramel chocolate pot de creme-- it was a little too sweet (this coming from a girl with a serious sweet tooth). There wasn't much ambience but it was nice to have the place more or less to ourselves, and the window seats offer a nice view of the cable cars and pedestrians passing by. read more

Cafe Meuse was a joke from the first moment I walked in on a sunny Saturday afternoon. The host who displayed no knowledge of wine, addressed me as BRO. I have no idea why. My Brothers don't even call me BRO. Additionally, The young lady asked me what I wanted to drink before even presenting me with a menu. when I asked for a couple of minuets to think my decision over she asked me if I would prefer a beer. Can anyone tell me who goes to a wine bar to DRINK BEER! The young lady was a classless host in a classless bar. Living in the Bay Area, we are too close to wine country and have many other promising options to waste our time, energy and money on such an establishment. Please heed this warning, do not waste your time. This wine bar will be obsolete in no time and you would have missed nothing. read more

If I could give half stars, I'd go with a 3.5. I'm a huge fan of the Ladies Night 2 for 1 on Thursday. It's the only night I go, but I visit fairly often since it's in my hood. There are some hits and misses on the wine list in my opinion: the Cabernet is a winner but skip the Zin (too fruity). As for apps, the olives with feta are great. Bummer about the skimpy salad, though. Saucer size = too small. The cheese plate is solid but unremarkable. I agree with others that the seating could be comfier, but kudos for the custom made tables. The last .5 star is for the cucumber water. Details count. read more

Went here for the first time with friends last week. AMAZING totally catered to multiple food allergies, specifically gluten intolerance, and did so with ease. Wednesday night ladies night. I walk by this place every single day. I FINALLY decided to stop in with a co-worker. We ordered the Artichoke Spinich Dip. It was DELICIOUS! I will go back just for that. The wine was well, wine. Love wine... whether it be 2 buck chuck or a bottle of the finest. Doesn't matter to this cat. I LOVED the fact that we were listening to Eminem. HAHAHA... I didn't expect that. But that's what made it cool. I went back last Wednesday bringing 3 co-workers. For the 3 of us, we had a cheese platter (honestly a lil over priced - $14- worth $11... yeah not a huge difference, but kinda is) and an app of Figs. I missed the artichoke dip. But, all in all, we spent $18 a person including tip for 2 glasses of wine EACH and 2 apps. I think that's a GREAT DEAL if you ask me. We'll go back again soon! read more

This place is fabulous!! We came here for my best friend's birthday, there were 8 of us, we all arrived at different times the waitress was incredibly accommodating for how obnoxious we are. The ambiance was perfect, it was quiet, we all could have a conversation at normal volume- which seems funny to remark on but it wasn't like we felt weird using normal voices and laughing it was just that we could hear each other. I was one of the late arrivals, my wonderful friends already ordered my a nice glass of Zin and courteously saved cheese, bread and olive oil for me. The wine selection was great and mostly moderately priced. The menu was small, which is nice because you know they are specializing things for the evening. I ordered this tomato crab soup which was delicious, everyone seemed as happy as I was with their food. All in all it was a great evening, I will definitely go again and again. read more

I love the Russian Hill neighborhood and Cafe Meuse is another reason for my infatuation with the 'hood (and SF, of course!). This wonderfully cozy, dimly lit wine bar offers generous pours of various wines (and beers) in a setting that is seriously romantic. I thought for a moment that I was in Paris! There is even a couch to lounge on and plenty of tables in darker corners for those special conversations :). The table service was friendly and very quick. Huge props to Cafe Meuse for keeping the music low enough for conversation. We WILL be back to visit! read more
